The steak was awesome as usual but the onion soup, beef tip appetizer, and Doe's salad leave a lot to be desired. The first two were too salty and the salad too wet with dressing. Tamales never fail. Our waitress Riley went above and beyond. She usually works in the cafe but got moved over there for the night. She definitely needs to be moved to Doe's. I don't know why I expected more- but if you need a reservation to order a steak that's almost $60- y'all should step up your game. I watched someone else look disgusted at her steak after sawing on it for several seconds and her husband spit his into a napkin, so we didn't give it a go. The gumbo was tolerable. The okra was salty and crisp. The garlic bread was actually good. The wedge salad was drowning in dressing, but also had a generous amount of blue cheese crumbles. Tucked away into the corner, the dark little space is just a shabby a hole in the wall. The seats are literally taped together. The whole place could've used a good wipe down. My wife and I had dinner there tonight. We were excited to try it. First off, the atmosphere. I could have done a better job at decorating. It is very cold feeling. Who thinks having a couple rolling pins or cast iron skillets hanging on the wall is decorating? Second, the service. There were only three parties with three waiters/waitresses working. Our waiter went missing for long periods at a time. Finally, the food. We love to go out to fine dinning restaurants. This place is trying to be upscale, but isn't. For an appetizer, we tried the tamales. They looked like the kind out of a can. They were just okay. My wife had the filet. It wasn't anything special. Sides are al a carte. So her steak was $35, baked potato $6, and Mac and cheese $6. Total of $47 and It isn't even as good as a chain like Longhorn. I had the Barbecue Shrimp. It was good, but not great. They did give me a lot of shrimp, but they were rubbery. Left half of them. $107.00, plus $20 tip. In my view, a waste of money. read more

Doe's is awesome if you know what to order and what to expect. If you are opposed to reading the entire review, here are the cliff notes: Get a massive ribeye. Don't get a salad. Don't get tamales. Enjoy. While Doe's is originally from Mississippi, my first experience was at their Baton Rouge location. There they have a massive chalkboard with all the cuts of steak they have in the store. This location is slightly different, but still maintains the awesomeness that makes me love Doe's. Steaks are not written on a board, but listed in the menu. There are no four pound t-bones for sharing your meat, but enough cuts for even the most picky eater. This location is inside Margaritaville. Getting to the restaurant requires pariking in the garage and a very long walk through the arcade area. That's not a big deal unless you've got kids with you and hope to avoid the games. My visit came on opening weekend and was quite unique. Since it was opening weekend I guess that hadn't worked all the kinks out. As I was eating a cup of gumbo the fire alarm went off. Figuring it was a non issue, everyone kept eating. A few minutes later we were told to evacuate. Everyone left, walked the long walk to the garage and stood around. After a little while a bunch of hard charging firemen arrived to make sure we were safe. After they did whatever it is firemen do, it was deemed safe and everyone made the long walk back. You'd think an experience like that would've soured me on the place and I would've just left. But guess what? I didn't and I'm glad I stayed. The gumbo was solid. The steak was more than solid. It was damn near perfect. I sure didn't expect that on opening weekend and after an evacuation, but damn they hit it out of the park. I haven't had many steaks on the Coast, but this wasn't just the best for the area, it was as good as BR Doe's and probably the best steak I had all year that I didn't cook myself. Now for a bit of controversy. Doe's is known for a house salad. I'm pretty sure BR offers a normal salad, but not here. Their house salad may be popular in MS, but this Louisiana boy doesn't like it at all. It's a little weird and I wish they had a regular salad with good blue cheese. The other controversial thing is their tamales. Maybe they're amazing, but I can't bring myself to try tamales at a steak house. Order at your own risk. If you want an awesome steak, go to Doe's. My husband and I arrived around 4:50 on a Saturday night and Doe's had not yet opened. The hostess allowed us to sit at the bar with another couple that was also not aware that they didn't open until 5. The hostess made all of our drinks at the bar and was very congenial. After the restaurant officially opened, we decided to stay at the bar with the other couple. We ordered their world famous tamales as an appetizer that are made with parchment paper versus corn husks. All of the entries are ala carte, which may differ from what you find online. My husband said the steak melted in his mouth and he enjoyed his potato as well. I was not impressed at all by the shoring spaghetti. It was overpriced for a simplistic spaghetti with too much sauce. Went on a date night because we hadn't been before. It's in the Margaritaville, so you'll get people right from the pool or the gaming floor mixed in - including the tourists staying there with their screaming kids. Food was good, we had tamales and fried green tomatoes and split a wedge salad. All that was good. But our server was overworked, as are most in the service industry nowadays, and you'll read on the sign when you first come in. So we waited and waited and decided against a steak and instead went with dessert and coffee. Atmosphere is cold and bland, not what you'd expect from $60 steak prices and a la carte menu. It's LOUD - you'll be listening to screaming tourist kids. It's not intimate. I guess we expected more, but the prices kinda suggest more. Overall not a BAD experience, but we won't be back to this location, we'll leave that to the tourists. I definitely would try Doe's in Greenville if I'm up there. If you're staying at Jimmy's place, it's probably not a bad place to grab dinner with your entire family, kids included. read more

We had three people and were expecting a good steak place. My daughter got mac n cheese and me and my son got the sirloin (medium rare) his with asparagus and mine with collard greens. Service was probably the only good thing (kind of). Mac n cheese was like Mayo mac n cheese, like chick-fil-a Mac n cheese. Steaks were seasoned well but way over seared and my sons had a massive piece of tendon through the steak which ruined 1/3 of it. The mac wasn't ordered with the rest of our meal (server mess up though she was nice and mostly on top of it) so my daughter ate from my plate until it showed up and we were ready to leave. You pay for every thing separately, so crappy texas toast garlic bread was $6 for 6 pieces... not worth it. Wasn't good bread, like it was purchased at Kroger or Walmart. Steaks $38 each (not worth that either) and we paid separately for the collard greens and asparagus ($7-$8 each). I'd say don't go here if you want anything to go or a good reasonably priced (or expensive) meal. I'll never go here again!! read more

The entres had fried fish, fried chicken and steak, steak, and more steaks. Plus everything was a la carte. The $30 6 oz filet came solo. I added a $7 twice baked potato. He added $7 lump crab and $7 sautéed mushrooms. If you just looked at the menu you'd expect something classy and high dollar instead you got the loud cacophony of patrons trying to talk over loud music. Our meal, for the 2 of us, was $117. I went in not to hungry and was going to get a cup or bowl of gumbo and have a couple drinks with some friends until the bartender came around. Yes we decided to have dinner at the bar. The bartender was awesome. She recommend the steak 6 oz. and after awhile I caved in and went for the steak and I still order the cup of gumbo. I was disappointed at first because I did not order the 10 oz. it was delicious. It was cooked perfectly. The gumbo was also on point. Went there a while back and it was just not good. Place was empty on a weekend night which should have been the first sign. Definitely not worth the money. The crab topping for my steak was loaded with shells to the point the waitress noticed me picking them out of my mouth and piling them on my plate. She took the remaining crab back(not replaced), wife's steak had to be sent back because the medium well steak was blue and cold in the middle. They just cut it in half and stuck it back on the grill. For $40 steak, that's not appropriate. The salad was weird---like the sad little salads I make at home on the fly: iceberg lettuce, a quarter chopped tomato, three slivers of purple onion, oil and vinegar. Even Better Than I Expected I had heard of the original Doe's up in Greenville, MS for years before the one opened on the Coast. So this weekend, we got around to trying it and the short story is--we'll definitely be back. Though not a big fan of tamales but these were excellent as was the dressing on the salad. The filet was so tender we hardly needed a knife and had a lot of flavor. The Mississippi Mud cake for desert was delicious though really rich (as one would expect.) And the service was excellent. We all ordered cocktails, which were delivered to our table pretty quickly. I had the Casanova, which was VERY sweet, but you could taste the banana liquer and vodka in it, which I enjoyed! For an appetizer, I ordered the Gumbo, which was fine. Nothing spectacular, but still okay. The entire table had fried crab claws which we all loved! All 4 of us ordered the filet. I ordered mine medium and it came out as ordered. It was tender, buttery, and pretty delicious. We didn't order dessert because we were stuffed! I'd definitely go back. Best gumbo ever. Great service. Superb steak and the list goes on and on. This was our first visit since it reopened and it didn't disappoint. It is pricey but worth it for a nice meal out. Family of four ate two cups and one bowl of gumbo, two wonderful huge steaks, three side dishes, and a kid meal for about $170.00. I would highly recommend this place for gumbo or steaks.
