If you care about your pet, avoid this place at all costs. Dr. Antoine Saacks seems to be a toxic combination of fragile ego, disorganization, and pure carelessness. I've taken two rescue/foster cats to see Dr. Saacks, each for multiple visits. He runs this "business" more like a hobby, which means he doesn't keep an appointment schedule or any records of procedures, and often double- or even triple-books patients. (The last time I had an appointment, so did someone else -- and Saacks was ALSO "about to go into surgery" so couldn't see any of us, despite the fact that my neighbors whose cat I was helping care for had spent 2 hours taking the RTA to get to the clinic.) Saacks barely does cursory examinations, and then recommends multiple visits either because he's too busy to actually give care or because he wants to charge you again. Prices are subject to change based on what he's feeling that day. Don't expect a receipt or even exact change. More on each cat I took there: Cat #1 had a nonvisual, swollen, weeping, occluded eye that needed to be removed. It took 2 visits for Saacks to prescribe an OINTMENT (which obviously did nothing, but cost $55). Took Cat #1 to Prytania Vet, where an actual veterinarian immediately confirmed the eye needed to come out. Cat #2: Saacks quoted me $150 for an "exploratory" surgery for this cat, who belonged to my neighbors. He was 18 years old and very sick. When I arrived with Cat #2 for the surgery, he said it would be $75 extra for a "required" IV fluids charge. When I asked, "Why wouldn't you quote the full $225 right off the bat if IV fluids are required?", he snapped, "No one is forcing you to be here" and walked away. (He was also preparing to do another surgery--simultaneously??-- in a dirty exam room with an open door.) Thankfully, I took him up on that offer. I picked up the cat carrier with Cat #2 and went straight to Prytania Vet, where I should have gone in the first place (why didn't I learn from Cat #1??). Prytania actually examined my neighbors' suffering cat, and concluded that -- as I had suspected an entire month earlier before stupidly bringing this cat to Saacks -- that humane euthanasia was the only option. By the way, Prytania did one SINGLE exam and was able to tell me things Saacks never knew after seeing Cat #2 three times. Along with advanced ear polyps and infection, the cat had a heart murmur, fast heartbeat, probable thyroid issues, and a rigid abdomen. The vet at Prytania told me that with his health issues, the cat likely wouldn't have survived the anesthesia Saacks was about to put him under that morning. Thank god I didn't leave him at Dog Day Afternoon -- my neighbors might not have had a chance to say goodbye. When I asked around, multiple staff of other veterinary clinics have heard "horror stories" about Saacks (their words, not mine). Let me remind you again that Saacks keeps no records that he's able to share with other vets when asked. Also, Joe who oversees the kenneled dogs has no training, and will let an unleashed dog run right at you and your pets with zero attention or apology. I'm sure that posting this will earn me Saacks' ire, since he's publicly railed against Yelp reviews as "childish" on his personal Facebook profile. But considering he's also showed how racist, xenophobic and violent he is on that page (including calling coronavirus the "Wuhan Virus" and regularly sharing misinformation), I don't really care. Long story short, absolutely nothing wrong with said tooth . A bit of discoloration , which is expected in a 12 yr old canine. Shame on you Antoine Saaks, willing to put my sweet Lou through the trama and pain of an unnecessary procedure, for what Just so sad for a vet to do that! Dr Saacks is an amazing Veterinarian who has taken great care of our pup. Unfortunately our senior dog had ongoing dental issues. Other vets were quoting huge amounts to do the necessary procedures. Dr Saacks quickly and capably handled the surgery (for a reasonable amount). He's a true professional and clearly cares about the animals that visit his clinic. Tl;dr - this place SUCKS and please don't go here Yall, this place is wild. Truly an experience that left me quoting moments for the rest of the day. We arrived at 8:59a for a 9a spay appointment. There was no one on site so we called the number listed on the front door. The guy who answered said he'd be there in a few minutes and that's what exactly what happened. Ok, right on. He asked if we were there for a check up and I said no, a spay. He said, "on a Saturday??" He checks us in, gives us paperwork, and goes to check on some of the animals in the back. At this point my boyfriend pointed out a bottle of vanilla vodka just chillin in one of the waiting room chairs. Listen, I don't want to see vodka in my vet's office but I sure as hell don't wanna see VANILLA vodka. The man came back to check on our paperwork and pointed one or two things out and when I say it was like he had just given his car an oil change under them fingernails. During this, another man came in to the office and announced "hey, I just woke up and I think there's a dead cat under my car...is there anything you guys can do to help?" Which like, sidebar, LOVE that he started with, I just woke up. Totally unnecessary information but so relatable in that moment. The employee responded "uhhhh, I could give you a bag". At this point we still don't know if this is the guy who's gunna be operating on our cat. Turns out, no, and the man who was supposed to is a TRIP, yall. He busted into the office lookin like a Chili's line cook, rag on his head, tshirt and shorts. He immediately started rattling off all of these extra tests and options that he recommended that rocketed up our total. He asked a bunch of questions about the history of how we got the cat, its living conditions and was openly judgmental and caustic in his responses. When it came to the spay itself he quoted $100. I had seen $45 online through the Humane Society of Louisiana (https://humanela.org/programs/spay-neuter-resources/orleans-parish/ ) so I was surprised. I said as much and he questioned where I found that number. I said "Louisiana Humane Society?" and he said, "not Humane Society of New Orleans". I was like, "I'm not sure, it could have been". He smirked. He really did!! And said "I AM the Humane Society of New Orleans". I was like ok??? At this point I was like "ok, well, I think we're gunna leave". He continued to engage us even though we fully said we were gunna leave. He snarkily threw in that we "should have gotten a verbal quote" and that was it for me! I brought my dog here for daycare last week and was very disappointed. When I dropped my dog off he had just been groomed. When I picked him up I asked to tour the facility and when I saw Ollie he was in a kennel, FILTHY and wet. I have the most outgoing and happy dog. He was terrified and could not wait to leave this place. He use to go to a different daycare before I moved and he always loved going. It seems like the dogs are kenneled the majority of the day which was not what I was told would happen during daycare. They also fed my dog without asking me. I do not recommend this place at all and will not be returning. read more

Good Day! I believe that it is asinine for an owner to get on a site to personally attack any customer. The best advice I can give a fellow pet owner is, "BEWARE and use your best judgment." All of the 1 and 2 star ratings speak for themselves. For example you can see the type of establishment this is when the owner bashes a paying customer whose pet was injured under their care. The main reason customers choose the vets/boarders that they do is because they believe that the individuals at these establishments will take care of their pet. To receive a phone call within hours from Dog Day stating that another dog has attacked my dog resulting in a cut by her eye, is unacceptable. To leave the dogs unattended, is unacceptable. To pay for the boarding and to then receive a phone call from Dr. Saacks being nasty towards me, is unacceptable. To continue to call my phone to try to argue with me, is unacceptable. To be upset because I, a customer, expresses their discontent with the service and furthermore the attitude provided by the owner, is unacceptable. For you to brush off my dogs injury as something that "is not out of the ordinary", is unacceptable. To have the audacity to believe that you should be patted on the back for providing care for my dog for free, is unacceptable. My dog should never have been injured in the first place. To pass on excuse after excuse and return my dog back to me with enough dirt to cover the bottom of the tub, is unacceptable. For my dog to be so frightened by the sound of dogs barking that she urinates from the trauma, is unacceptable. To be so callous and arrogant in your post in reference to this situation, is unacceptable. To not once take the time to actually say "I'm sorry", is unacceptable. Customer Service goes a long way; apparently this notion is a thing of the past. I would like to thank you Dr. Saacks however for taking the time to demonstrate your own character. My wife took our golden retriever here to be groomed last week. The staff was friendly and they were able to accommodate us at the last minute (we were leaving on a long road trip the next day and wanted our pup to be well-groomed and comfortable for the drive). Despite requesting (and paying for) a full cut, it looks like all they did was make a few random stabs at his fur with an electric trimmer. We have done better-looking haircuts at home with a pair of kitchen shears. Worst of all, they did absolutely no brushing whatsoever. He has developed painfully matted patches of fur all over his body. One on his crotch was so painful he licked at it until the skin was raw. We will not be using Dog Day Afternoon again. read more

My dog Cooper absolutely loves this place.. and I have to say I do too. The staff is really friendly, and they adore Cooper (and you can tell from how excited he gets whenever we get close to the location). It's located in a cute old house in Uptown on Magazine. They keep everything clean and really go the extra mile with their guests. Cooper is always exhausted after playing all day there. He's an older dog, and as a rescue has had some behavioral issues of the past.. and they really did a great job to get him acclimated and welcome. It's also great because they have a vet they are affiliated with right next door. Once when Cooper in a longer stay, he needed an update on his shots, and they took care of it next door, which takes one more thing I need to do off my list. The prices are great (and in the summer, look for special boarding prices.. which for a student is absolutely perfect!). They really seem to care about the dogs, and Lauren especially is amazing with Coops. They're local, friendly, and I highly recommend them to anyone! They're also open everyday (even Sunday!) from 7am-7pm so I can get a lot of work done on days I can't give Cooper the exercise he needs. ..And it doesn't hurt they're right across the street from Surrey's.. so after I drop off Coops for the day, I'll grab some great breakfast to start my day off for studying. read more

My parents have been using this place for a while and everything has always been fine till Today. My mother had an appointment to get our family dog groomed and to get his teeth cleaned. She was on her way and got a phone call from the dr. attempting to cancel the appointment (because he had his own appointment to go to) . She still however managed to get the dog there and when she went inside the doctor was Very unprofessional started raising his voice at my mother and telling he she should have come in earlier (Last time I checked she made an appointment for a time she could bring him). As anyone who has been here knows when you bring in your animal they ask you if you want any extras while my mother was talking to the receptionist about it when the dr. then turned around and told her to shhhhhhhh. When you run a business your Customers should be #1 priority. Without customers you make Nothing. The staff is friendly and very professional however the Dr. Is VERY unprofessional and Very Rude. Its been exactly 30 days since my terrifying experience at this place. I wanted to wait until I was no longer hurt by what had transpired to write this. NEVER bring you loved companions to this person. His only motive is money, not whats best for your animal. I always confirm price before making an appointment to be sure I have enough funds. On a previous visit, I picked up my baby and to my surprise, it was $30 more than what I was told when dropping him off. I figured it was a miscommunication, so due to the fact that I love his groomer, I returned again only to have the same thing happen. Naturally I was confused. Why is it that that you tell me 1 price over the phone and then when I arrive to pick up my shih Tzu, its much higher. The Vet replied "well I added on extra treatments that I think he needed". I am all for the well being of my baby but if you think there is certain treatments he needs, pick up the phone and call his owner before you decide the give him medication. Not to mention the treatments you gave him, he was already treated for (i.e. rabies & heart worms. I get those done at the LSPCA because its much cheaper). I stressed that I only have the amount of money he told me over the phone, and that's when all hell broke loose. He refused to give me my dog and said "If I don't come up with the extra money in 7-11 days, by law he can sell my dog" he told me to "call someone and see if they can pay the difference over the phone, because that's to only why i'm leaving with me dog". Meanwhile my baby is cry so loudly in the back room (probably because he heard how upset I was) which caused me to panic. I pleaded with him to take the $140 I had and he refused. My only other option was to call the police to come and help but I was informed that it was a "civil Matter" and there was nothing they could do for me. My last resort was to call a friend of mines who ended up loaning me the money but the situation was escalated tremendously and handled all wrong by someone who is supposed to be a "certified veterinarian and business owner". I used the doggie daycare services and really enjoyed my experience here! Antoine was able to accommodate my schedule and give me a tour and information at the drop of a hat. After the tour, I was able to watch as my dog join the others in the yard to make sure he integrated well. My dog is allowed free range at home, gets plenty of activity, and I do not crate him for more than 4 hours a day. Consequently, he does not enjoy being crated for long hours. It makes him hyperactive, so I can always tell when a daycare center crates for the bulk of the day. DDA lets the dogs play in the yard for most of the day which is perfect for us! I picked him up and could easily tell he was happy and exhausted. We will definitely be using the daycare services again! read more

I have been taking my dog to this vet and kennel since arriving in New Orleans. The Doc and staff are accommodating and very nice. My pup is a 65lb pit and loves going, this is no easy task. Be warned. I recently took my dog to the groomer at dog day afternoon and am extremely disappointed and outraged that when she came back she had one large deep cut under her front right leg on a 7lb Yorkie it was the size of a dime! She also had a cut under her front left leg and her nails were trimmed to the point where they were bleeding. I did not notice the cuts until 6 pm until I started to notice that she was licking herself. Upon my call at 6 pm the woman whom answered recommended putting neosporin and let me know that the vet would get back to me the next morning. It has been 5 days upon which I've emailed and called multiple times with contact information and no response from the owner/vet. This is extremely poor customer service and handling of my small Yorkie. I would be extremely cautious bringing your dog to this groomer. She also has not acted the same since returning home and shakes. Disappointed. read more

Our new puppy was hit by a car and had severe road burns on its hind leg. We took him to Southeast Vetenary Hospital for emergency treatment. They immediately gave us estimates for $1400 and another estimate for up to $2500 for the following five days. We asked what our options were and they suggested $3000 skin graft or $2500 amputation. With the bills piling up, we decided to look for other facilities and found this wonderful little place on Magazine Street. Dr. Saacks immediately took Rocky under his wing. He was dumbfounded that the other place even suggested amputation. He also wondered why they charged us for a culture since there wasn't enough time for any infection. He prescribed basic TLC under his care where they treated the wound on a daily basis until the skin grew back and reformed around the original wounds. Four weeks later we had Rocky back, completely healed and the cost was the same as one night at SE Vetenary Hospital. Now we take Rocky there for grooming and he is so excited to be there. This place might look like no-frills, but the staff really seem to care about their jobs and the animals. Highly recommend this place. read more

This is a review about an upscale dog kennel on Magazine St. Sorry to disappoint any old school movie fans out there. A few months ago, I needed to board my large but extremely cute black lab Tycho for a long weekend. As with most things, I waited until the last minute to find a place for him to stay. I usually have him stay at Zeus' place, but alas, there was no room at the inn. So after looking at several other options, I called the friendly people of Dog Day Afternoon. They were more than happy to accommodate him. Tycho was behind on his "kennel cough" shot and they even made an appointment for me at the vet across the street to have it done. The kennel itself is very clean and well kept; they even have a big screen TV for the dogs to watch "dog friendly" movies! Ok, that was perhaps a bit too much comfort for my dog but I was very impressed with the operation as a whole. Tycho seemed very happy with his stay and I enjoyed the peace of mind that came with that level of service. It is a little more expensive than some other kennels in town, but I consider it a doggy spa that Tycho can now retreat to for a couple days of pampering if I'm out of town. read more

Honestly can't say enough good things about this place. The backyard play area is full of happy pups who are watched over. When my dog got attacked (at the dog park, not with them of course), the assistant taped it up for free and was incredibly kind. They scheduled an appt for the next morning, first thing, and fixed her right up. Did I mention that it's only $15 to keep your dog overnight here? Or for a day and night? We took our dog here to get groomed two Saturdays ago. We were told we were the first ones there at 10:00 a.m. but even still, we didn't get our dog back till 2:00 p.m. That would be fine if it weren't for the fact that we asked to have him fully shaved, and when we got him his entire head and tail had not been touched. His head looks extremely awkward as it isn't blended into the rest of his body so it looks like he has a toupe. My wife and I are extremely busy with an infant and didn't think much of the poor grooming job, but because of the lack of hair cut on his head, he is developing painful mats, the whole reason we wanted to get him cut. We called Dog Day Afternoon 1.5 weeks after the grooming and asked them if they would just fix his head and tail as we originally asked them to do. We were informed that they would do it for a $30 cost. My wife and I found this to be outrageous customer service, as if you make a mistake, even if it is 1.5 weeks later, you should take responsibility for it and foot the bill. I would recommend you don't take your dog to get groomed here if you are worried about listening to instructions or appropriate responses to customer service issues. read more

I would be quite wary of this kennel if I were a pet owner. I recently received a phone call from Dr. Saacks, the vet affiliated with Dog Day Afternoon, regarding an dog that my cousin had given away more than two months ago. During the course of this conversation, Dr. Saacks personally insulted members of my family and used threats and intimidation (including threatening to take the police to my cousin's house) in an attempt to convince me or someone from my family to take responsibility for a $400 bill. I repeat, my cousin had given the dog away more than two months before. However, outdated records made it appear that she was responsible for the dog and that I was the emergency contact. If Dog Day Afternoon cannot even be trusted to keep its records current enough to locate the correct owner of an animal, why would you trust the staff with the care of your pet? read more

Not only is the name clever.....this is honestly the best groomer I've ever been to. I don't write reviews but felt compelled to promote this business. I've had horrible cuts for my chow mix and paid over $100. My dog looks great and they handle all her vaccinations on site for 1/2 the price. Staff is friendly and their hours are incredible. I'll never take my girl to another groomer. I hear that they are about to offer 24/7 emergency care as well. Your pet will be in good hands. read more

I have two dogs with VERY different personalities. As a result, boarding has always been an issue. One of my dogs plays very well with others. The other...doesn't. Dog Day Afternoon changed all of that. The first time I boarded Chula and PoBoy, I arrived to pick them up and I was greeted with personal stories from the weekend and pictures of my dogs at play! I learned that the dogs play in supervised groups designed to make them feel comfortable around each other. And to my surprise, my "doesn't get along well with others" dog, Chula, LOVED being at Dog Day Afternoon and DID get along well with others! Whenever I called, I only had to mention my dogs' names and the staff greeted me like family. Dr. Saacks visits daily and his practice is across the street, so I always feel like my dogs are in the best possible hands. I can personally attest to Dr. Saacks' ability, as he was my vet for both Chula and Poboy, and performed surgery on PoBoy. Dog Day also offers Sunday hours, which is extremely convenient and significantly cuts back on boarding costs. When I had to move from New Orleans in May of 2010, my biggest regret was that I had to leave Dr. Saacks and the fantastic staff at Dog Day Afternoon. I have lived in different cities across the country, and Dog Day Afternoon is by far the BEST dog boarder/day care I have encountered. I use Dog Day Afternoon for daycare and boarding, and Dr Saacks, who is affiliated with them, as my vet. I am extremely satisfied with the care my dog has received here. Dr Saacks has gone out of his way to accommodate me and my pup when I needed last minute, week-long care for her. He is always friendly and gives great medical treatment. He has even recommended cheaper, natural alternative treatment when he could have easily cashed in on selling me unnecessary medication. When I tell my dog that we're going to the vet, she gets excited and runs to the door to go. She loves playing all day at Dog Day Afternoon, it's hard to get her to leave when I come pick her up! They understand my dog's specific high-energy needs and always work to do what's best for her. They have never given me cause for complaint, and I would recommend them to anyone looking for a veterinarian or for day care. read more

We have boarded our two pups here four times. Each time we found it was clean, bright, cheerful, and the staff was very sweet to our dogs. The open affection and care is excellent. Antoine Sax is an excellent vet with the training and devotion to his calling that is the best you will find. We stumbled upon this business accidentally, and our two puppies can be a tad wild (not quite pups, but alway babies in our eyes). It appears the negative comments are from rivals. That is a pity. If you want your pets well cared for, then use Dog Day Afternoon. You will make the animals you love feel and know they are loved. The man that works at Dog Day Afternoon--he often helps coordinate the boarding--is aggressive and rude. When I brought my dog in he aggressively yelled at her for barking; I understand she's just a dog, but if that sort of thing invokes anger in him, how is he with the dogs when ACTUAL behavioral problems occur? His mannerisms are unnecessarily harsh--e.g. "We will definitely not hold onto your leash, you cannot leave it here" before I was even able to notify him that I was aware of that policy. I mistakenly referred my friend to the business and she was greeted with abruptness via: insistence that she fork over a deposit, she must come fill out paper work right away, due to the breed she must pay $10 more, she could only cancel if her dog got adopted (she is fostering) three days in advance, and just general rudeness and poor customer service. There are a lot of dog boarding contenders in this city and if you can't manage enthusiasm and proper customer service--well, GOOD LUCK! I was a long time customer but no more. read more
