Delicious food, fast service. Only complaint is extremely overpriced. Cute atmosphere!

I've been attempting to give this restaurant a fair chance, however every time I order food, whether it be breakfast or a small bite, it comes out cooked incorrectly, lacking flavor, and the random bits of food on my plate that I haven't ordered lead me to question the restaurants cleanliness. Recently, I purchased an egg and cheese on sourdough - the sourdough was plain white bread, I asked for my eggs cooked over hard, they were runny, and when I politely asked for them to fix my order, they literally took it back and threw it back on the grill, cross-contaminating it with everything else. Safe to say, I will never come back here, I've had enough unfortunate experiences with Dog Lane. **update. Establishment offered me a refund for my meal. I am still upset with the quality of food and service, however I am thankful for the reparations. read more

For the price, no wifi, no outlets, and the worst service you will find in Storrs you should go elsewhere. An older man in a puffer vest (no uniform of any kind, I thought he was a customer at first) took my plate without asking if he could, asked me if I was staying long then told me they would need the table soon for their lunch rush, and then walked away quickly before I could reply. Confrontational enough to suggest people leave but not brave enough to post seating limits is definitely a choice a business across the street from a college. read more

The beet salad is one of my favorites at Dog Lane Cafe, today I ordered 2 salads to go; the amount of beets on these salads has been significantly reduced; literally 4- 5 bites of beet in each salad. A far cry from the regular. Otherwise the ingredients were fresh. Not a value at any stretch for the $15 price point. read more

Loved everything about this place! The decor is awesome and atmosphere is so lively. The servers were very friendly. Their menu options seem to be endless which made me a bit confused; I wanted to try a bit of everything, but I controlled myself to two things. I had the hummus with tomato, avocado on GF toast - delicious. It was the first time I ever had hummus with avocado & tomato and it's my new favorite. My husband had bacon, egg & cheese on a bun with home fries- his home fries were spicy, which were not spicy fans but he did like his BEC. When I'm back to pick up my son from school, I'll have to stop by again and try something else. They also had desserts showing inside the glass casing that looked divine. We arrived around 6:20 to grab a quick dinner before attending an event. There were only a few tables in use when we arrived. We ordered burgers and paid just over $38 for two burgers and sat down. At 7:00 I inquired about our food and was told "it's on the grill", as if that was a great thing. Two burgers being "on the grill" 40 minutes after being ordered is not something that should be normalized. We waited over 45 minutes for two burgers on a reasonably slow evening. One employee had time to stick the drink fridge at least 4 times while we sat there. Very few drinks had been sold, so I'm not sure why that was a priority. We had to get boxes and take our burgers to go because we didn't have time to eat. Cold burgers. Gross. At least the person who brought the food said "sorry about the wait"; but unfortunately that just isn't enough to make it right. We love the vanilla bean and hoped for a similar experience here. I have to start with the food for this one because the food was absolutely delicious. Dog Lane Cafe was quite busy when my entire volleyball team came in, but they got everything to us incredibly quick. Not to mention that this was about 21 coffees and meals, and everything was out in less than 20 minutes. I didn't get to take a picture of my breakfast sandwich because I devoured it haha, but my lavender latte is pictured. I think it was a special, but it should definitely be a more permanent fixture on the menu because it was so yummy. But in terms of food, I got one of their breakfast sandwiches, and was not disappointed at all! The entire vibe of the place was not at all what I was expecting when we were looking from the outside, but it's got such an eclectic, cozy vibe that made our entire team talk about it all morning. Here is the Cliff's Notes edition for the college crowd...this place was a big disappointment. Boasting "Best Burger in Storrs," the Dog House Burger was actually a horribly small, terribly dry hockey puck that could be bested by any drunk student with a George Foreman grill in their dorm room. Even worse...they have the audacity to charge $16.00 for this burger with a bag of potato chips. The $17.00 Smoked Salmon BLT was a much better menu selection, but not reason enough to come here. It's always a pet peeve of mine when a sandwich made on square/rectangular bread has no substance toward the edges, and all the ingredients are piled in a small section on the center of the bread. If Sandwich Making 101 is a pass / fail course, they failed. On the bright side, I was glad to hear great '90s rock music while dining. read more

A popular place for the breakfast and brunch crowd - lots of college students so a young crowd too. Food is decent but service leaves a lot to be desired. My daughter had a breakfast quesadilla and my wife had the Green Goddess breakfast sandwich - both were quite tasty. I had a cinnamon bun but found it dry. As mentioned, service is spotty - had to ask twice for wife's sandwich well after me and my daughter were served. Dog Lane's system of finding your table via these oversized playing cards (which are issued to you once you place your order at the counter) was majorly inefficient with dish-laden waitstaff wandering all over the place trying to spot your playing card on the table. It's actually rather amusing and comical to watch - unless, of course, you're the one waiting for your food and frantically waving your card. read more

They don't have a public wifi or any outlets to be considered a cafe... it's more like a cafeteria. Order at the counter and they will bring your food for you. They have a bottomless hot coffee or tea corner if you are going to stay long. Will hand you a cup for that. Ambient lighting and mild background noise. Will get loud when busy. read more

Ordered our food then sat down. Then was told they didn't have the special that I ordered so ordered something different we waited an hour for our food. One of the salads that we ordered we asked for dressing on the side, no hummus, no peppers. First time the salad came with dressing all over the salad. The second time it came with peppers and hummus, the third time it finally came out correctly but we had to take it to go because we had a 2 and 1/2 hour drive home and it was getting late. read more

I think there's a huge hype around Dog Lane Cafe because it is so close to the university. THE FOOD I used to somewhat enjoy the food here but I feel like it has gotten worse in recent years. Although I know prices listed already include tax, the "true" price is still very overpriced in my opinion. -breakfast sandwich for $8.50 and it is soooo skimpy. It should be priced $5 at the most for what you get! -also you can see in the image here they didn't clean the knife before slicing my sandwich. Good thing I'm not allergic to pesto. -we've gotten the breakfast potatoes twice but never again. First time they were absolutely raw! So gross. Second time they were tiny shriveled up and disgustingly cold. I can't believe I paid an extra $2 in either instance. -the other sandwiches are hit or miss. Attached is a recent Turkey sandwich I ordered. I will say that almost never mess up when you ask for something with/without (ex. Big onion hater here) -Soup is usually good -I like their salads as well but to go they give you the same amount of dressing with a large salad as they do a small so I stopped ordering them to just pay $9 for essentially dry lettuce. THE SERVICE -the workers are usually pleasant -you seat yourself and take a card to display so they know where to deliver the food THE DRINKS -I'm a big fan of their vanilla chais, hot or iced are very tasty -they also have a nice variety of coffee you can get -they sell alcohol but I've never gone here and wanted any THE ATMOSPHERE -it's got really nice cafe vibes -we enjoy sitting outside when the weather is nice Overall, I wish the food was more consistent and reasonable for the price you pay because I really like the atmosphere and convenience of location. read more

When in Storrs in summer, dining options are not plentiful and we had a member of our party who is vegan and gluten free. Dog Lane Cafe checked the boxes for vegan/GF options with a tofu bahn mi sandwich that was greatly appreciated by that family member. However, the praise kinda fell off after that. Two of us ordered hamburgers as the DLC was touted as "UCONN's best burger." It was just fine- the burger was greasy but not particularly juicy or flavorful. The bun acted like a sponge and soaked it up, making a soggy mess, and the bacon was too crispy to be enjoyable. $15 for burger served with a measly bag of potato chips felt like a letdown. Another member of our party got the salmon BLT, and another, the chicken salad sandwich. Those were better options than the burgers but also served with the same potato chips. We did all enjoy the 90s alternative music playlist and the funky vibe of the decor. The staff were young and friendly enough but it was the end of their shift and they were clearly anxious for us to go- as they began cleaning the floors and wrapping up pastries while we ate. If I find myself back in Storrs again, I will likely try somewhere else. read more

Our men's college basketball team has enjoyed breakfast at Dog Lane Café on several occasions over the past few years, and it's always a great way to start the day. The food is fresh, tasty, and consistently a team favorite--whether it's a hearty breakfast sandwich or something lighter. The service is friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. A big thank you to Brianna, who always goes out of her way to make sure everything runs smoothly for us. I was happy to see that some things don't change... I used to frequent DLC as a UCONN undergraduate student and was psyched to pay a visit with friends over the weekend. You cannot go wrong with any of their gourmet grilled cheeses, each of us ordered one and they were cooked to perfection. The turnover in the restaurant was remarkable, and the staff seemed to handle the crowds with ease. It's an adorable cafe close by campus with plenty of seating and a wide ranging menu. It's great for working or meeting up for a coffee chat. The only downside is that there is no WiFi so make sure you have a good hotspot ready if you are bringing your computer or be prepared to work offline! Such a disappointment. A Reuben sandwich: minuscule, like a tiny piece of bread was lost on the plate. The Swiss cheese wasn't melted at all. There was a little layer of some vegetables that were cold from the refrigerator. So, it's like somebody toasted a piece of bread, grab some cold things from the fridge and put it on a plate. It wasn't cheap and it certainly wasn't good. The latte I ordered was lukewarm- milk should be steamed and hot and should not cool the beverage to room temperature. The locals enjoy the ambience of this restaurant despite the fact that there aren't many international visitors or Chinese students there. Particularly as for the freshly grilled beef hot dogs and salmon sandwiches, those two dushes are ideal picks. After visiting in June 2018 and again September 2018 my family and I agree this is Five Star Service. We feel welcomed and pampered. Our orders are correct. Special diets are carefully prepared and substitutions are made free of charge. They have gluten free and lots of pastries in addition to bacon, eggs, and breakfast sandwiches. It's all good! I've had the turkey sandwich in the past for lunch. The food is fresh and the portions enough to satisfy my huge appetite. Tried this a second time. The food was just terrible. SO overpriced for what you get. The hamburger with bacon was the worst burger I've ever eaten - I would rather fast food to be honest. The grilled cheese was good - but that was about all that was good. Caramel latte if you even want to call it that was terrible ... threw it away before I left the building. They really need to review their pricing and step up their staff - the friendliness and customer service m was lack luster at best. We weren't sure what to expect at Dog Lane Cafe in Storrs, Ct, but were absolutely mesmerized by the expansive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The place is just--fun! We enjoyed our carrot/ginger soup and clam chowders, which we ordered because we weren't sure our ahi tuna tacos would be ample. We liked the soups, but we didn't need them. The taco were very well prepared with a pineapple salsa and a spicy chipotle mayo. The only thing we might have changed was the wrap, which was a rather tough flatbread, not a tortilla. We wouldn't mind flatbread, but this one was quite chewy and not very flexible as finger food. The salsa was great and the tuna prepared rare, was just right. The service is cute, with playing cards for servers to deliver food to the right tables, and a casual, but very eclectic ambiance throughout, including blackboard menu, which changes throughout the night as popular meals--like shrimp pasta--are sold out. We shall return to this place--maybe even for breakfast or lunch if we're close by. read more

Came to get breakfast with three of my friends and spent upwards of $50 on food as a group. My friends left to go to class but I stayed to do some school work until an old man (assuming the owner) came up to my table to ask me if other people had been sitting with me and if we had ordered food or not. He then proceeded to say that I was rude for bringing a Dunkin coffee into 'his' restaurant, which I only had with me because I was drinking it in class before coming to Dog Lane to get breakfast with my friends. The restaurant was also practically empty as it is a Thursday morning so it was a bit absurd that he was insinuating I was stealing a table from other people. I was a big fan of this restaurant as a UConn student before this since the food is good and all my other experiences have been great, but I don't appreciate being interrogated and called disrespectful for doing homework and eating the food I paid for, so unfortunately, they have lost a customer. I've seen a lot of other reviews with similar experiences so I think I would recommend to the owner not to open a casual cafe restaurant on a college campus if you don't want students in there. read more

I don't know where to start for this. As a UConn student of 5 years I had such high hopes for this business and enjoyed the convenience of a cafe/restaurant in downtown Storrs. But after a few visits, and as someone who has worked in a restaurant for years, I quickly learned how troubled this business is. I will not be coming back after today's visit and neither will my friends or family just for the overpriced low quality food and drinks and bad service alone, but today was the last straw. My friend and I came in and ordered, we sat down at a table for two, and started doing some schoolwork. They were handing out free cupcakes on campus so I had that on the table uneaten which remained on the table next to me. We were visibly half way done with our food (that we bought!) when a man comes up me and asks if I'm done, to which I reply no, I'm still working, thank you. He immediately changes tone and proceeds to tell me that me bringing in food from elsewhere is very "uncool" especially when other people could be sitting at the table and that I'm taking up space in his restaurant. I said sorry. Yes, I had outside food, a restaurant no no, however, we are on a COLLEGE CAMPUS and I was a paying customer. Overall, the "owner" was rude and made us feel so uncomfortable that we left (he basically kicked us out anyways). The beef short rib sandwich at $16 was wildly overpriced, beef was slapped on unevenly and one third was just bread and sauce, had to remake the sandwich myself. It was tasty otherwise, staff was pleasant. Would have enjoyed if priced fairly at $12 maximum based on what it was. Try harder to fight inflation and offer some value meals. Dog Lane prices now higher than now most similar shops in NYC. Bathroom was clean but sad to read about how the elderly professor was treated last month by the manager. read more

We dine at Dog Lane nearly every week. But this week was most likely out last. The service gets worse with each visit. This morning we ordered a toasted bagel and some toast- an order that shouldn't have stretched the capabilities of the staff. But after waiting 15 minutes (of which we watched the bagel sit at the top of the toaster for 10 minutes) we went to the front counter to complain. So the bagel came right out, but of course was cold. But no toast, so the staff had to "look into it". Really? As if putting two slices of bread into a toaster required investigation. So the toast came out two minutes later- but the latte we ordered was still MIA. That showed up a couple of minutes later If the staff had acknowledge that they messed up it might have been some consolation, but no, maybe we should just feel lucky that they served us at all. Likewise if the place had been full we'd cut them some slack, but the dining area was only about 25% occupied. Two weeks ago my daughter stopped in and ordered two smoothies to go, again with a dining room that wasn't very full. Her wait time? 30 minutes. If she hadn't paid for them up front she would have walked out. I rarely write negative reviews, and understand that any business and their staff can have a bad day. But the trend here is obvious and it isn't good. We'll go someplace else where hopefully our business is appreciated. read more

A great cafe, spacious and cozy environment! The line was quick and they give you these cards that act like table numbers for food delivery which I find really cute. The vanilla fog was good, not too sweet. I got the grilled shrimp over garden salad, which is kind of pricey in my opinion. But it was good as well, though the vinaigrette was kind of too much for me (but i like my salads lightly dressed). The food also took a while to come out. I love a good cappuccino. They have always been perfect here in the past. However, when I stopped in today, my cappuccino was barely warm and tasted like milk more than coffee. I brought it back up and let them know about the temperature. Only to be told," That's as hot as I can get it. The milk is steamed. I can't make it any hotter." I politely replied, " Do you have a microwave?" She nuked it. It's definitely not worth my $5.50 today. Along with the dismissive customer service attitude. I will go elsewhere next time. read more

I am an 82 year old graduate of the University of ct with two masters degrees in Engineering. My wife has several advanced degrees from U Conn Unfortunately I am also the caretaker for my wife who has Alzheimers and has full time care at home. Several times a week I try to get out of the house and I have been frequenting the Dog Lane Cafe. where I order coffee and a breakfast item and read my newspaper; typically I stay for under an hour. Today as I left the mens room the manager appeared and asked if I had cleaned up. I returned and did some spot cleaning. The manager then told me that he did not want me in the restaurant any more because the staff complains that I leave the rest room a mess. I am not a homeless man , always buy something and leave a good tip; if there were issues with the rest room I wish he had told me previously.If I am a customer and I need to use the restroom I am under not obligation to act a cleaning attendee. I do clean it up and there is never any papers on the floor or products in the bowl after I leave. My suspicion is that he wants his restaurant to have either students and their parents; unfortunately I am now just a Retired Engineer who supported the Dept of Defense and the Us Congress.
