So happy to have discovered this hidden gem. My daughter and I happened to be in Colchester early and hoped to find a spot for breakfast. Diane's was absolutely wonderful. I am particular about omelettes, finding most restaurant prepared omelettes to be overcooked/thick, this was a perfect and delicious cheese and bacon omelette, beautifully cooked. My daughter's peach pancakes were fluffy and tender, she loved them. Our side of corned beef hash was grilled with a delicious caramelized crust and soft interior. She very much appreciated the option of pure maple syrup. The perfect breakfast restaurant with a lovely mural of the nearby historic covered Comstock Bridge which we were also excited to discover. We had an excellent breakfast here this morning. My daughter really really loves fruit and the selection that Diane's had was amazing. Banana, cantaloupe, honey dew, watermelon, strawberries, blackberries. Unreal. And the cup was 2.25 and overflowing. Great value. This establishment is racist. I went with my family and we were the only nonwhite people there, and were treated like it. A table that arrived at the same time as us was served their food before our order was even taken. This continued while several other (white) tables walked in and were served before us. When our food finally arrived we were not checked on at all throughout our meal. When I confronted them about their poor quality of service the excuse I was given was that they were "understaffed", but that answer didn't explain why all the other tables around us were served in a timely manner and we were ignored. read more

The latest offering from Diane's restaurant is the Amazing Pumpkin Pancake and it truly is Amazing! The cake is light, fluffy and has a subtle Pumpkin and spice flavor that is superb. I'm a regular at this establishment and during this time of year I make sure to go there as often as I can to indulge in those cakes which is only one of many specialty Pancakes that they offer. Dianes is also a good choice for lunch with some really super sandwiches at a very reasonable price, the Billy Burger is one of the best burgers I have ever had and the John Wayne and Wally Matthau sandwiches are also excellent. My friend told me how she'd been dying to try this place since she lives right around the corner. They're cash only (which you know means it's an amazing little random spot) and so we eagerly went to the ATM yesterday morning and we showed up at 9 am on the dot. The tables were all full since it's small so we sat on the stools, which were pretty comfy. What struck me was how perfect the chalkboard was with the specials and how they had fresh little roses on the countertop. We both had the westchester omelet with coffee, and wow, what amazing diner coffee it was. The toast was absolutely perfect, the potatoes expertly fried, and I thoroughly enjoyed the omelet with sausage, cheese, and apple filling. It was kind of like an apple pie filling, and while delicious, I would maybe make it like they do in the Midwest with fresh apples just lightly fried with sharp cheddar cheese instead of mozz. I was recommend by a friend of mine about this place saying it was the best Eggs Benny in connecticut after my favorite place in old saybrook closed down. But upon my arrival to this place, I couldn't even find it, it looked closed. I had to call the place to find it. Wife and I had breakfast this morning - our first and last visit. The service was terrible. The waitress never came back to check and after several attempts, we could not get her attention. My wife finally got up and walked over to her and asked for a second cup of coffee. We were both empty when she delivered the food (first and only cup). Ten minutes later after taking and delivering several orders she grabbed the pots but rather than coming to our table first she started at the back of the restaurant and hit every other table before getting to us. We had already finished eating and were ready to leave so declined the 2nd cup. I initially found it odd that you get your bill when the waitress takes your order, but after the experience of today I realize that is a reflection of their attitude - get people in and out as fast as possible at the expense of good customer service. That might work if the food was exemplary. Unfortunately, the food at Diane's is not. My omelette was thin and dry. My wife got ham and eggs. We stopped for Breakfast on our way to Consumer Reports, and I must say the food was delicious. Honestly, looking at the outside of the place we weren't sure if we wanted to step inside because the shades on the windows were closed and the outside did not look too inviting. Not that I know about decorating but they should really think of getting bottom up shades to let the light in and let you see inside the place - the front could use a little makeover. But after reading the other favorable YELP reviews we decided to give this place a try and I am happy we did. The place was clean and decorated up for Halloween, very cute. The staff were friendly and prices were great. We ordered the Plain Pancake and paid extra for the real maple syrup that was delicious and ordered eggs, Toast with crispy bacon. One thing I did notice was that the front counter step-stools did not have backs to them, and for me I could never sit at a counter without having some sort of back support. All and all, we would come back here again for Breakfast if we are ever in the area because of the great and prices and food. read more
