Don n Suds was my first job when I was in high school (in the 70's) and we go here whenever we are in Muskegon. It is nice see that there are still a couple of these left in Michigan. The menu has changed little since I was kid working on the grill and the food tastes pretty much the same as all those years ago. I tend to get the pork tenderloin sandwich the wife usually gets the corn dogs (which were not on our menu). The root beer is still one of my favorites and despite the fact that it is available in the bottle in the area, there is something about getting it in a frosted mug that makes it taste so much better. Well worth the visit but check the hours before you go. We have been there a couple of times recently and found it closed. read more

The restaurant had a welcoming ambiance to it. We choose to eat inside because of the extreme temperatures outside that day. I ordered the Cheeseburger (shocker I know) with their season fries. Worst experience I ever had at a restaurant. Was meeting a group of people who had already arrived and we're seated. When I entered there was a woman who stood at the door and said they were not seating any other customers. There was only the group I was meeting and maybe two other tables in the whole place. The manager/cook was walking around in a confused state yelling that he couldn't take anymore customers. I explained to the woman that we wouldn't order anything but would just like to join our group that was already there. She literally barred the entry and would not allow us into the restaurant. Although their advertised vegetarian options are limited, you could order grilled veggies on a bun or hot dog toppings on a bun, and they'll be happy to oblige. Not only was the food mediocre at best, the gentleman working was frustrated at our party of 20. Apparently too much business is an unwelcome issue for this establishment. Perhaps if they learned to accommodate tables larger than 4, they'd have an easier time filling the place up. It was my first, and last experience here. The chicken tenders I ordered say 3-4 pieces on the menu. I received two, and was told they're 'by weight'. Perhaps it should say that on the menu? The two tenders I received were so hot they burned the inside of my mouth, so I didn't have to taste the rest of the blah meal. Aside from the poor service, the food gave no reasons to return. On special occasions I loved to treat my family to a jug of freshly brewed root beer. My son and I both referred to it as the world's greatest.....However we will now have to settle for anything but. The last time my son and I walked into the restaraunt we were greeted by the waitress. I told her I would like a jug of root beer to go. My husband and I love to support local, small businesses, but we would caution anyone considering dining at the Dog-n-Suds restaurants. The following is an email conversation between us and the management/owner of the Dog-n-Suds located on Grand Haven Rd in Muskegon, MI on 4/13/2012. First Email from us: Tonight my family and I visited the Muskegon restaurant. We received the worst service. The food was excellent. The problem was with the manager. For some reason one girl was in charge of cleaning glasses and not helping with customers. Then we had to see and hear him belittle his staff. I have no idea why he would do this with customers in the dinning area. We kept waiting for some cameras to come out and let us know we were on a show. His actions will make me have to rethink whether or not my family will visit it again. Response: Thanks for your comments, We have been alot busier than expected, and were training. Soon we will not have a staffed dining room, table phones will be used to place orders. There will be greater speed and accuracy using this method as the computer answers the buttons in the order they were pushed. Have a great weekend, Dog n Suds of Muskegon. The manager even went as far as to blame the server for "freaking out" because it made him "freak out". A good manager would have instead offered support, encouragement and guidance to his staff and would have been the calming presence. One of the manager's comments was that the customers were going to "blame him" for her errors. Actually we blame him for acting like a horrible person. All in all, a simple "we are training" would have sufficed to appease any concerns about slower service or any errors in the orders. We would be returning if that were the case. I almost never get a chance to go to lunch . Today I decided to treat myself to Dog n Suds . My 60th birthday . No one in the restaurant but me . A lady met me at the door & asked if I was dining in . I said no ,I'd like it to go . She said I had to order from the the outside then . I said I have never had to do that before , she said I do now as of January . So I walked out there to order & a guy came out & said I can't stand at the machine I needed to get in my truck & place my order , he said "its not hard" ... If you knew how tall my truck is you would know its impossible to reach the buttons from there . I would have had to get out of the truck anyway .I left I told my son & my daughter in law while they were here . My son left & talked to the manager . Heard about its unique vintage charm and food. Kids were excited and we drove 40 minutes to the muskegon location. Pulling in we noticed all the windows papered over which struck us as strange. We got out and found a door after much searching and before we could go inside were forced out by a manager. Supposed training for new girls going on. Peering inside it was dark and no girls in sight. We were told to eat in our car or sit at a picnic table by the busy road in the hot sun. I told her we wanted to eat inside but were refused even after telling her of our long trek there. She said it was nice enough weather to eat outside. We promptly left confused and vexed. After reading multiple other reviews also with the same problems over the years we have decided there is either a drug ring...porno shoots...cannibalism...or some REALLY shady stuff going on there. The ambiance is perfect for a 1950's drive in, the staff is courteous, they even have the little silver coin changers on their belts. Order the 22 ounce root beers, they come in a frosty mug and are wonderful. Ordered a hot dog, a corn dog, and a shrimp & fries basket. Corn dog was tiny and way overpriced. Hot dog looked like something I could pick up at Walmart and throw on a bun. Shrimp was over cooked and mainly batter hardly any meat at all. The fries that came with them were soggy and obviously had been sitting quite a while. What a fun place!!! This was the first time the kids had been to a drive-in, and we went for the carside service. Kids had the BBQ sandwich and said it was delicious but small (but DD didn't like the chunky-style applesauce that came with it). My grilled chicken sandwich was decent, but not special. DH had the hamburger and fries and said it was tasty. We tried the root beer based on the Yelp reviews--very tasty, much better than what you get in the store. I've visited both Muskegon County locations and their food is consistent in its ups and downs at both places. I have never been impressed with their fries but their onion rings are quite munch-worthy. Their coney and chicago dogs are tasty and probably my top recommendation. Stray off the beaten path of burgers (another item I haven't always been impressed with) to find some real treats, like their pork BBQ or tenderloin sandwiches (yum!). Eating outside at the Grand Haven Road location isn't great but the inside area is excellent in the wintertime and on rainy days. As for value, I always walk away feeling I've paid a buck or two more than expected, but they recently added some bargain deals that satisfy if you are on a budget. Long story short, most of their menu is good with a few exceptions, the experience adds some fun factor, and bring a few extra dollars if you're hungry! read more
