ADOPTERS BEWARE I am writing this review simply to relay my experience with Dog Saver Rescue and to hopefully spare other potential adopters the heartbreak we experienced. My husband and I recently lost one of our rescues to cancer and were looking to adopt another rescue dog. We spotted Hennessy on Dog Saver and immediately applied for him as he reminded us so much of the dog we just lost. After contacting Cindy a couple of times she informed me that we had been selected to adopt Hennessy. We were THRILLED! She told me that she would contact me the following Friday to set up transport. Well, Friday came and went and no call from Cindy. I called the following day and left a message asking her to give me a call. After not getting a call back I tried calling her again. Finally she answered. I told her that I became concerned when I didn't hear from her. She assured me that everything was status quo and that she was very busy but would get back to me the following Friday. Friday came and again no response. I called and left a message asking her to get back to me, no response. I called again leaving her a birthday message and letting her know that we were having fun preparing for the arrival of Hennessy and to please give me a call. This was back in April, it is now almost July and we have never heard another word from Cindy. How do you promise someone a dog and then ignore them. It's not only unfair to the potential adopter, but is also unfair to the dogs she claims that she cares so much about. She has had that dog since March and it is almost July. That dog must feel that he is already in his forever home. So now this dog has to be uprooted again causing more anxiety for him. I feel that Cindy never had any intention of transporting Hennessy to us since we live out of state and just decided not to respond to our calls. We never would have applied for the dog if it stated that the rescue did not transport. Perhaps this correction should be made to prevent other adopters from the heartbreak we experienced. Before I close, I contacted my references after we were told we had been selected to adopt Hennessy to thank them and none of them said they had spoken to anyone from Dog Saver. She probably didn't even check our vet records. Totally incompetent rescue. BEWARE! read more

I completed an application and didn't hear back for a few days so I called to inquire and finally got through. They said they received my application and would be out at PetsSmart in Wentzville, if I could make it that Saturday (literally two days notice) I could most likely take the dog home but if not they would give it to someone else. Upon leaving work and getting out there, I felt very pressured to either decide to take him immediately without introducing him to my other dog (which I had asked for more time to do so) or they would give him to someone else. He had poop all over his coat as they claimed they washed him that morning but he rolled around in it before arriving. Caving to the pressure of now or never, I took him only to find out the poor guy had worms which I had to then get dewormer for my dog and the other dogs where I was living at the time. I was also quoted one price and then told a different price while at Petsmsart which they later refunded and gave me what they quoted me but they also didn't send me home with a leash, food, a bowl or bed for him and I received all of that when I adopted my other dog. All in all these two women are incredibly disorganized and I'm not certain these dogs are in the best hands so while I did in fact rescue this little guy, he and my other dog sadly don't get along and he may have been better suited with someone else were they not to rush people into these very big decisions and allow time and space for people to meet and greet. read more

Dog Saver is a wonderful rescue group made up of volunteers and foster homes. I would never consider them, or any other reputable rescue group a 'business' by definition. They are dedicated 24/7 to cover the needs of their rescue dogs. It is a common practice for a rescue to give their dogs vaccinations, except for rabies. If the Vet gave them every vaccine, a rescue couldn't afford to save as many. Regarding Bordetella, plenty of rescues have stopped giving this. Kennel cough is like the common cold. There are so many different strands of the virus that even if you gave Bordetella the dogs/pups can still get it. It will always depend on the individual animal. When a rescue takes dogs/puppies they do not always know their history, and even if somebody told them a story it could be just that, a story. Some dogs and pups may have a more compromised immune system than we would ever know. There's no way to know if their immune systems are strong or not. And unless a pup is born within the rescue they truly do not know the exact age of each animal. When the rescue takes in pups at 3 or 4 months of age and starts them on their vaccinations, they will obviously already be behind the 8-ball. Unfortunately, some of the adopted dogs may get exposed to kennel cough either by walking past a new intake or even at the adoption event. People bring their own dogs to these places all the time and some people walk around with small pups that they got from whoever and may have only had one round of vaccinations, or have never had any at all. Rescues do the best they can with the resources available to them. It's not easy, physically, mentally, or emotionally. Funds are scarce, demands are high. Dog Saver would never purposely adopt out a dog or pup if they knew they were sick. Ever. Have dogs or pups gotten sick after an adoption? Of course. The stress is a lot for these animals, so that alone can weaken their immune systems enough to get kennel cough, or have sick stomachs for the first few days. With distemper, a viral disease, there is no one test to determine this illness. The diagnosis is based on symptoms and health history. Typically distemper symptoms present themselves in a series of five stages after the virus has been contracted. A week after the initial contact with the virus a pup will start acting sluggish and have a fever over 101.5 degrees F. The trademark symptoms will begin to appear shortly after.... Distemper is one of the most cruel and heartbreaking viruses that any pet owner can go thru... trust me, I know.... and I wholeheartedly believe that Dog Saver, or any other reputable rescue group, would never ever purposely adopt a pup to a family that had any possibility of being exposed to this. read more

Update. As of last night, we took our dog to emergency vet after vomiting and strange behavior and eventually a grand mall seizure. He's now on life support until we can muster the courage to pull the plug. The vet in Washington that Dog Saver is using did admit to me that he didn't have all his distemper vaccinations. It is up to the rescue group if they give 3 or 4. And yes, the group buys the meds from the vet and does them herself. She gave my dog only 3. He was sick when we got him and my vet wouldn't give any vaccine at that time. This is a poor example of a rescue group. They seem to be selling lots of dogs and can't afford the standard medicine to protect them. read more

I completed my application and emailed it. I didn't hear anything for 4 days, so I called to confirm they received it. It took 2 days to get someone on the phone. I agreed to drive an hour and a half to see the dog at a PetSmart adoption event. When I told them I wanted to adopt the dog I was informed another family was also interested and that they would discuss who would be allowed to adopt the dog and let me know. Another 5 days passed. I spent another 2 days calling. When I finally reached someone I was then told 6 people were trying to adopt the dog, but that they would contact me with their decision that afternoon. I never heard from anyone. I'm not sure why if you already have someone interested you continue to take the dogs to adoption events. According to their own policy stated on the website after meeting the animal you have 24 hours to decide if you want it. If someone has already informed them they want the dog and their application has been approved, why continue to accumulate additional interested parties. All that does is hurt more people. My granddaughter is devastated. If they had told me from the beginning they already had an interested party I would not have made the trip, I would not have taken my family to meet a dog already spoken for, and we would not all be heartbroken now. In the long run they are only harming the dogs, because eventually people will stop trying to adopt from them. I should have trusted my instincts after reading multiple negative reviews about this place. If you are looking for a quick, professional adoption, go elsewhere. read more
