Unfortunately, after a few sessions, the co-owner, Derrick, messaged me through their chat platform to say that our puppy had been making noise in her crate that day. This was a one-off situation -- she'd had some stomach issues in the days prior -- but he warned that if it happened two more times, she would be removed from the program. I understand it's their program and their rules, but his communication style was extremely direct -- almost as if he were speaking to a dog -- harsh and matter-of-fact. He told me that how I receive and perceive his messages is "on me." Talk about customer-oriented! If he ever took a class on people or management, he might learn that there's an old saying: perception is reality. I also had a few billing questions, and since texts weren't resolving the issue, I asked multiple times for him to call me, which he eventually did. From the start of that call, he was defensive and completely closed to any feedback about his communication style. I was honestly shocked at how the conversation unfolded and even asked if he was the owner or manager. Despite all this, I genuinely wanted to continue working with them. In short, they removed us from the program the very next day and promptly refunded our fees. My advice: don't offer him any feedback -- he doesn't take it well. It's a real shame, because the staff at Canis are wonderful, and the facility and programs themselves are truly impressive. We had been raving fans and recommended them to everyone, so this turned out to be a very disappointing experience.

I cannot express how glad we have been with our decision to bring our dog to CMDT. Bee and Derrick are wonderful. They make themselves available (within reason) for any questions or help with training. The classes are informative and have been instrumental in our dog's fantastic training progress. Our pup has always come home happy, healthy, and tired from a day of socialization and training when she goes to puppy daycare, and we love watching the livestream so we can see her having a blast. What I personally appreciate the most about CMDT, beyond the care and compassion of the trainers who undoubtedly love the dogs, is the method of training they provide. No harsh punishment necessary. The dogs learn through basic positive psychology and reward association. We do the homework between classes and have seen our dog become more well mannered, confident, and happy through good training. If she could leave a review I think she would say CMDT is her favorite spot, given how excited she is every time we pull up. Just recently, I went to them at my veterinarian's suggestion to have my beloved pet euthanised. They behaved with their usual kindness and competence, were respectful and sympathetic to someone who was there to be with a beloved pet when she died. They are, as I indicated, very good in their work. But my most recent interaction highlighted their excellence. My pet's departure was handled with kindness, sympathy and skill. When the time came to collect my pet's ashes, I was given a beautiful carved box, a nice card and a pawprint. All of these were truly touching, and the n0ote that I received later was truly kind and comforting. I was aware of their expertise in treating animals; their kindness and consideration and respect for my pet were above anything I had expected. That to the side, their facility is very good, the staff is kind and knowledgeable, and they treat all the pets that come to them with skill and compassion. They ghave earned five stars.

The doctors are very nice, but the groomer and front desk staff are horrible…read more I took my dog there for her first checkup and explained from the beginning that she has severe anxiety due to being hit by a groomer in the past. The doctors prescribed medication to help with her anxiety. Unfortunately, the medication did not work--she was still overstimulated during grooming. I called to explain this, and the dosage was increased, but that still did not help. I then thought we could try a different medication, but that never happened. The doctors suggested I try their groomer, saying she was great, so I agreed. I asked for a teddy bear cut. Don't get me wrong--Zoe did come out with a teddy bear cut. However, the groomer then told me that next time Zoe would need to be sedated. That really shocked me. Not only is sedation expensive, but I am also not comfortable putting my dog through that unless it is absolutely necessary. What I don't understand is why no one suggested a gradual approach--such as having Zoe come into the office once a week for 15-20 minutes so she could slowly get to know the groomer and build trust. Creating a bond with an anxious dog should be the priority. If the groomer was able to groom her the first time--even if it was difficult--then clearly it was possible. This makes me question whether the focus is on building trust and helping the dog, or simply on money. I am extremely disappointed with this experience. A very disappointed former customer!

Calm, Peaceful Dog Area: We stopped by to brighten the animals' day, not to adopt. I hadn't been in…read moreyears since I moved out of the area. I was instantly struck by how quiet and peaceful the dog area sounded while I signed the visitor's log upon entering building. Typically on past visits, the loud sounds of multiple dogs barking could be heard from main entry door. I was told by the reception desk that the dog area is not available for visits- that they noticed during the pandemic (no visitors) that the dogs were calm and peaceful, so they changed the visit policy for the dogs' best interest. Can't argue with that- the calm silence was absolutely astounding, and the ideal atmosphere for any dog adjusting to their new, hopefully short-term environment. Call ahead to check the policy for your potential adoption visit- I didn't ask about it. We did see a private visitation in progress for a potential adoption, in one of the small visitation / consultation rooms off the main hall when we walked to the cats and the small furries adjacent to cat zone- happy to see that most cat spaces were empty. All cages / holding spaces looked very well maintained, and animals healthy, which was consistently my experience when I used to visit often when I lived in the area.

Each way was an hour and a half drive, we were told after we filed the proper forms and meet with the consultant there that upon further review they would not adopt the animal due to the fact that one of my kids was eleven and the puppy could only go to a home where every child was over twelve. This would have been useful info that would have saved me the three hours of round trip driving. What makes it worse is that the mean employee was informed by me the prior trip of my children's ages, at which point she stated that there was no problems and as long as the dog got along with all family members we could take her home with us. Last summer I moved to South Windsor which gave me the perfect excuse to get a new vet. I chose South Windsor Vet Clinic and I am so glad I did. I've seen each of the vets but Dr Rose is excellent. She genuinely cares about the animals she sees and takes the time to explain things in an understandable way while not speaking like she would to a child. I've never felt pressured into any procedure or medication that wasn't needed. The care my animals have gotten here is truly top-notch. Definitely recommend.
