Great experience yesterday at Dog Star Rescue in Bloomfield. We brought our mini poodle there for photos with Santa, Dee usually has anxiety with new people & places, but the friendly staff made her feel at ease. Santa was awesome, and I must say, he is the most authentic looking Kris Kringle I've seen in a very long time. The digital photos were sent to us before we had even left the building, and all that for only a $20 donation (and we know it is going to good cause). We'll definitely be back next year if they are having Photos with Santa again. read more

We adopted Bimbi 2 days ago. We were told he was great with people, children, cats and dogs-a friend to all. He was a stray from NC. We were told he did great in his foster home. We took him home, played in the yard, took him for a nice long walk. When dinner time came, he was ravenous and just about inhaled his food. He also tried to get our food. The next day, after he ate and his bowl was empty and he had walked away from it, my husband went to pick up the bowl and he growled and lunged at him and bit his hand. A half hour later, he took him outside to pee and was coming back in through the garage and Bimbi tried to grab a bag of bird seed. When my husband tried to push it away with his foot, he clamped down hard on his foot. It was a good thing he had shoes on! We contacted Dog Star and told them we wanted to bring him back that day. The woman tried to make us feel guilty, saying he just hasn't settled into his new home yet. He was great with the foster home. We told her he has food aggression, and she said he was merely food motivated. She said the foster home crated him during their mealtime. We weren't told this before the adoption and if we had been told it would have been a big red flag. We said we were uncomfortable having him in our house and afraid of him. She said the surrender team would reach out to us, but they are all volunteers and it could take 1-2 weeks! We said we wanted to bring him in that day. They finally called and said to bring him in at 5:30 and someone would meet us there. We signed him back over to them and left. 2 days later, he is back out on the website as an adoptable dog who is a friend to all! Steer clear and don't trust what you are told about the dogs. We have been dog owners for 30 years and never had anything like this happen. It makes me sick to think what could happen to another dog, child, cat or person who comes near his food, or is eating food in his presence! read more

When we adopted Gizmo, I know the rescued didn't he was sick. He had worms, 2 types of parasites. As well as a broken infected molder. After about $1500 in unexpected vet bills I was very disappointed. However, Dog Star reached out to me and made everything right. They helped me out with 1/2 the vet bills, with a sincere apology. we adopted Luna, a bulldog mix from Dogstar rescue. Shortly after,it became apparent that she was not a good match due to many aggressive behaviors.We call Dogstar and told them that we couldn't keep her.They refused to take her back. Eventually we took her to Tufts University for a behavioral work up and told them Dogstar's reaction. They called Dogstar a low level rescue and said that when a rescue doesn't have a backup plan it's not a high quality rescue. read more

Very unprofessional!!! 0 stars if it was possible. I was a reference to qualify someone for a dog and after all was said and done, they qualified to meet the dog. Upon my call and a call to another reference they called the family a "perfect fit" for said puppy they had been spending the last 2 weeks trying everything to adopt and all was well. Even going as far to saying "I promise to get this dog to them for Christmas maybe even the week before." This morning the family woke up to an email saying the puppy was longer available as the email read... "Mike has been matched with another family pending the outcome of a meet and greet. If successful, they will be adopted and if not, they will attend our next public adoption event. If there's another dog you'd like to be considered for, please let us know!" Qualifying for the dog and the rescue even promising to have the dog in their home by Christmas, completely getting hopes up for the family and friends of the family, very unprofessional to all of a sudden inform them someone else was also planning on adopting him. Yes these dogs need homes I won't say don't adopt from dog star rescue. But will say don't get your hopes up to get what they say even if they promise it. Dog Star ruined many days today and I'm sure they've ruined many days based on other reviews. I hope they see this review and know they are immoral and unprofessional and change needs to be made. read more

We adopted our dog Finn from dogstar after hearing amazing things from pretty much anyone who has either adopted a dog or knows about the local dog rescue organizations in CT. They made the process so easy and welcoming. As first time dog adopters we were nervous about finding the right fit. When we finally were introduced to Finn (formerly known as Sampson) it was love at first sight. You could tell immediately that the foster family he had been set up with prior to adoption was fantastic and took loving care of him. We didn't have to worry about anything as it was all taken care of in terms of vet checkups and health care needs. They were 100% honest with us every step of the way. Extremely unprofessional organization. We told them that we were looking for a dog with medium energy and moderate training needs. They approved us for a shepherd mix with "medium energy" and some "leash pulling" and sent us on our way. He was extremely leash-reactive and lunged at runners, trucks and small animals. We were prepared for this, but we were not prepared for the violent herding behavior that he exhibited each evening. You may think that humping/mounting and nipping are minor nuisances, but not so with a 70-lb dog with massive claws and teeth. My boyfriend could not be in the same room as him because the dog would constantly bite at his hands, feet, neck, and face. By the end of the 7-day trial we were both covered in scratches and bite marks. We knew the herding behavior was an outlet for the dog's energy, so we tried to keep him physically and mentally stimulated throughout the day. We took him on frequent walks and did training exercises and puzzle games in order to tire him out. It didn't make a difference--each night the same violent behavior returned. It was clear to us that we wouldn't be able to give the dog what he needed to expend his energy, so we told Dogstar that we would not be proceeding with the adoption. They told us that they would look for a foster for him immediately (they didn't have one lined up). We were very firm in telling them that they needed to find a foster ASAP as we did not feel comfortable with the dog in our house given his behavior. 24 hours later and they still could not find one so they told us to bring him to Dog Star headquarters. We drove 50 minutes and arrived at 10:25 for a 10:30 appointment. They told us "You're early" and then proceeded to make us wait for 30 minutes. When I went back into the office and asked what was going on, I waited another 15 minutes while they scrambled to figure out what to do, all the while making passive-aggressive remarks trying to shame me for giving the dog up. For example, a woman who was looking after a foster dog made a joke to the trainer, "Hey James, I'm giving this dog up after my 7-day trial-- JUST KIDDING!" (btw, that's the point of a trial period--to assess whether a dog is the right fit for your family, and there's no shame if you decide not to move forward). When they finally had time for us at 11:15, they told us that they would have to kennel the dog since they didn't have a foster lined up, but he needed a vaccination first. They then proceeded to administer the vaccination in the parking lot while cars and trucks whizzed by. Before they could administer the shot, the dog started thrashing and growling. A staff member asked my boyfriend to "hold down" the dog, but he respectfully declined as he had already been bit multiple times. The staff member went ahead with the shot and ended up getting the needle stuck in the dog's skin. Finally, after some more passive-aggressive comments from the other volunteers, we were able to give the dog back and leave. Less than 10 hours later he was posted to their website with a very disingenuous description and was adopted the next day. Beware that if your adoption experience doesn't work out you can expect some very petty and childish behavior from this organization. read more

The number of adoptable dogs online, in pounds around the State, was overwhelming, and I applied for adoption several times with other rescues but Dog Star Rescue was the only rescue that responded the same day. If there was an option for 0 stars, that's what I would give this rescue. It is honestly such a shame because when I adopted one of my dogs from them in 2017, I had an amazing, positive experience. Fast forward to present day and my experience was horrible. At the adoption event I went to, it was unorganized, chaotic, with horrible communication. One volunteer I worked with in particular was rude and judgmental. Others there had no idea which dogs were being adopted, which ones were still available, etc. I would not recommend this rescue to those seeking to adopt a dog. read more
