Great experience! Taught us a lot with our dogs on our private training lessons with two dogs! Our 2 year old (resource guarding issues) and our 6 month old puppy. Every class was a good time, with good information and personalized guidance. Remember you have to do your homework to see improvement! It pays off! I just finished training with Mark. We needed help with pulling on the leash and introducing other dogs. Mark brought his dog and we slowly introduced and built confidence each week. In a short 4 week Barrett (Australian Cattle Dog) has improved on walks and successfully had a play date with a friends puppy. I highly recommend Doggie Steps and Mark as your trainer. read more

We cannot say enough good things about our experience with Mark! We have a Saint Bernard/Poodle, and we were honestly at a loss before working with him. From the very first session, he brought a sense of calm, structure, and confidence, not just to our dog, but to us as owners too. He didn't just "train" our dog, they taught us how to communicate with him, which has made all the difference. Whether it was leash walking, recall, or managing his excitement around new people, Mark gave us clear tools and realistic steps that worked. Our Saint is now more respectful, easier to manage, and still his lovable self. If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, especially with a giant breed, this is your person. So thankful we found him! read more

The replies are timely and comprehensive. Super worth the price. My dogs started acting better after the very first session. I felt comfortable taking my dogs to see my small family members without fear of my dogs scaring the kids. I was able to take my dogs off leash in public for photos with my wife. Mark was informed about my dogs' specific breed and gave me the tools to work with my dogs specifically. I look forward to working with him more! read more

This review is a bit overdue. We adopted a cute little terrier mix from a local rescue and, after having to toss out many shoes and experiencing several days of frustration, hired Mark to train us and our new pup. We were convinced that our new pup was the devil incarnate and we were being karmically punished for something horrible we'd done in a past life. Mark offered scheduling options and we opted for him to come to our home for training. We mostly stuck to our schedule, but he was flexible when circumstances changed. The training was fantastic. He provided a curriculum and modified it, when necessary. By the end of the 8 training lessons, our pup was absolutely transformed. Seriously. It's not magic, though. It was up to us to consistently train between lessons. And we did. And we still do. Mark provided exactly what we needed to be successful in understanding and managing our pup's needs, and how to get him to respond to us favorably. Our 11th week with our new pack member is coming to a close and we are so happy that we called Mark to help us through the frustration. We highly recommend his services. Thank you, Mark! read more

We adopted a very large 110lb, very anxious young (ish) lab. Mark came to us through a recommendation from the rescue. We went from this dog growling and barking at people, being very hyper when he sees other dogs (as in you will be dragged down the street by a giant animal!) to a much calmer, controlled dog. We literally thought we would never be able to take this dog out in public and he now goes on social visits to petsmart, home depot etc. We did the 4 week class and I really, REALLY thought 4 weeks was never going to be enough. Mark got us there faster than I would have imagined. I will warn you - you have to do the homework (which is very reasonable). If you don't, you won't be successful. I'll also add - I contacted Mark via phone - he sent me a text to prepay training. I know in today's day and age this can bring on a bout of paranoia but he was always on time, always ready to help and always got us going quickly. He followed up through the week for check ins. He cares about what he does and the families and animals he helps. I can't recommend him enough and I am so thankful for what he did for not only our pet but our family. read more

We were referred to Mark by a daycare/boarding facility. Our puppy was very anxious and nervous and we wanted to make sure he was ok to be with other dogs in daycare. After working with Mark for only a couple of weeks he was able to make new friends at daycare! We freshened up on his basic commands, have him walking nicely on leash and did some agility moves to help him gain confidence. We're going to join his group sessions now for even more socialization for him. We highly recommended Mark! read more

Mark was a godsend for my dog's separation anxiety. My corgi/cattle dog mix would bark, drool, and destroy the blinds when left alone. Now after 4 weeks of in-home training with Mark, we just left him alone, loose for almost 2 hours with no signs of anxiety or destruction! We also got a really nice, solid foundation of obedience tools that have made my dog so much easier to live with. I would recommend Mark to anyone. read more

I seriously wish I could give this review 10 stars. Working with Mark has been such an amazing experience both for our 2-year old pitbull, Broly, and my fiancé & I. When we came to Mark, we were told that Broly was aggressive & reactive. I wanted to try to mitigate this and help him as much as possible. I spent hours and days looking for a trainer, and when I found Mark, I felt so much comfort knowing he would help us. Its been 5 months since we began working with Mark, and all I can say is life has been a night and day difference with Broly. Not only has Broly's obedience/behavior improved, we can take him out in public, around other dogs, and even have pup-dates without fear. We learned Broly was not reactive, but just a bit awkward when meeting other dogs. We learned more about Broly than I ever thought we could, and learned how we can best support him and his needs through Mark's guidance. Broly has just graduated Advanced Group Class, and I never thought I'd see a day where I would be saying (typing) that, or see him engaging with other dogs & wanting to play. I'm so excited to keeping working with Mark and the rest of the Doggie Steps Dog Training Team, and continue to learn more, and have Broly make some more friends! read more

Where do I start? Mark is an EXCELLANT trainer! My dog and I learned so much. Did I say I learned something? Yes! Mark trains the owner on many things that were 100% spot on when I used the techniques he gave me. Mark is prompt and easy to work with. So kind and smart. My dog is 100% a better dog from the training she received. Money very well spent. I would do it all again, but I don't need to because my dog is doing so good. We used Mark to train new puppy both in home training and in group classes. He had trained a family member's dog and that dog is very well behaved. We tried some other trainers and made some progress but working with Mark our little Scooby Doo turned into a well trained dog. I am so glad I found Mark. He is truly amazing and helped us with our 2 new 5 month old puppies, Levi and Lexi. They were both anxious but in particular, Lexi. He took the time to get to know them.. not just "another dog". What makes them tick, what makes them anxious. He actually personalized the training to their needs. After recommending a gentle leader, which I was not a fan of in the beginning, and learning how to use it, we can now have more "fun" on our walks than before. They both pulled and barked and did not listen to any commands. Even though she is still a bit anxious and barks at cars, she will listen to our commands. On his recommendation, we socialized them with other dogs and people and they have become so loving. We actually went to the dog park today and they were perfect. Looking forward to taking them to his group lessons. Thank you Mark! We couldn't have gotten to this place with our puppies without you. Linda and Greg read more

Mark Siebel with Doggie Steps Dog Training did an excellent job in assisting us with our 4 yr old rescue, Bella, a miniature poodle. We chose the class that was twice a week at his home/neighborhood and local park. He taught us so much and made the class fun. He is patient, kind and compassionate. We completed the beginners puppy group class and advance puppy group class. Mark was awesome, he was very knowledgeable and helpful throughout both classes! He was always checking in and very helpful when any new puppy behaviors came up outside of class and taught us the skills needed to not only train our pup to have good manners but skills to help keep him safe. He definitely knows what he is doing and was always good to my puppy! I would recommend him to anyone! read more

We found Doggie Steps via Yelp in January, so of course I have to review here in case any of you reading this right now are not sure which trainer or training school to choose for your fuzzy family members. I also research everything to the extreme to make sure we have chosen the best person/company possible, and for the best price. We decided to do the in-house 5 week training because our home, at the time we reached out, was just unmanageable long term. Mark has changed our household for the better since I reached out to ask if he had room to take us on as home-visit clients! He's great and i'm sure his group sessions are just as effective. We have learned so much, and will continue to improve even though our session is completed. He offers all clients that purchase an in-home package to also attend his weekend group classes for additional or refresher training as needed. Background on our situation: About a month and a half ago we got a second Husky. It was always our plan to get a second dog, but I honestly had no idea what I was doing integrating a new adult male dog into a house where we already had an adult male dog. Both dogs got along at first, but pack-order tests were soon an issue for us. On day #2 there was a scary fight in our living room over a bone. I decided that we would really benefit from professional help.......I had no clue what I was doing. I wanted the new pup to feel at home, and I wanted our 1st pup to understand the new dynamic. We saw a change after the very first session with Mark. Of course we did all the home-work during the week, but that was easy and only took a little bit of time out of our days - so well worth it. Mark has helped us to make meal-time an orchestrated breeze, and has helped our daily walk time to be more calm. Our dogs are the best of friends now, and I think they appreciate knowing exactly what is expected of them to get the results they want. We have also alleviated our own stress in trying to control them. Basically Mark trained us! And we have trained the dogs through repetition and positive rewards. Additionally, the dogs loved Mark and were always excited about 'school night' when he arrived. Training them to not excitedly jump on people they know and like at the door is a quality problem that we are still trying to educate them on. In closing, stop your search here and if you need help training your dog(s), contact Mark. I will say he is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. It is worth it. Also consider the experience an investment in your own personal knowledge. The class was as much an education for me as it was for our dogs. Mark has trained us to train the dogs and I can carry that skill with me for the rest of my life. We paid for one 5-week session -- but 4 of us (2 dogs, 2 people) have gained an education. Thank YOU Mark!! :) read more

We adopted Ripple from a rescue and had not had a puppy in our life for 10+ years. We have older calmer boys, so little Ripple was quite the handful and we needed help, that is were Mark came in. We decided to do training in our home and it was great. Training started immediately and it was all hands on, so we knew exactly what to do/practice when Mark was not there. Ripple's response to Marks's calm demeanor and gentle methods led to an improvement in behavior after 1 session and we all continued to improve each week. It was very valuable to get the training up front, as he went over crate training and potty training as well. I have an 8 month old puppy, and we have completed 3 of the 5 training sessions. Great results thus far; our dog has learned various commands that have been extremely useful on a regular basis -- the puppy is also much more confident in public, around other dogs, and around other people -- I would highly recommend this service if you are thinking about it for your dog, the owner Mark does a fantastic job. read more

My lab puppy just graduated from the 5 week group class, and I can't stop singing Mark's praises. With his coaching and a little help from Mac's new gentle leader, it was a night and day difference. At the very least, he probably saved me from rotator cuff problems in the future. Even though there were 4 other dogs in the class, Mark definitely gave each pup and owner some personalized attention, and tailored the commands to each dog. It was amazing to see my rambunctious pup progress from one class to the next, and become a (mostly) better behaved dog. Mark is great! He trained us humans very well so we can continue to train Petey past the five classes. Petey learned basic commands and a couple cool "show dog" moves. We took our other puppy to PetSmart prior to knowing about Doggie Steps and I would definitely recommend Doggie Steps over PetSmart! Mark truly cares about the success of his students and will quickly respond to emails if you have any questions. We had to miss a class and he didn't count it as one of the five classes - he just added another week onto the end to ensure we got the full five. I was not expecting this at all because with PetSmart, if we missed a class, that was our loss--they don't let you come another week. Overall, we have seen a great improvement in Petey's behavior! Definitely would recommend Doggie Steps to others! read more

Good trainer, great methodology. Everything Mark taught us worked, only thing needed is consistency on our part to keep our pup trained. Prices were reasonable. Only qualm we had was inconsistency on prices. With committing to six week class we were told our pup could attend unlimited group classes for free for a year. When we tried to attend we were then told that the max was 5, which was kind of lame. There were some other inconsistencies (the difference between 4&5 Star) but all in all he was a good trainer. Would definitely recommend to any new pup owner of any breed. read more

We hired Mark to train our precocious Shiba Inu puppy, and we were very pleased with the results! Mark is experienced, kind, knowledgable, and has an attention to detail. Mark is a competent dog behaviorist - meaning - he is adept at observing an owner's weaknesses, gaps in basic training, what motivates your particular dog or could be a weakness in what you're using to motivate your dog, etc. His tips/suggestions and techniques are effective. As an animal healthcare specialist I'm awful at training dogs, and most of us in the profession are - too much "dog empathy" which doesn't make a well-behaved or well-rounded dog most of the time. My puppy reflected and compounded on this weakness for months before we saught Mark's insight. As a COVID puppy, the socialization weaknesses were magnified. While my schedule/work time demands limit my ability for perfection in training (ability to be as consistent as ideal), Mark's insight has gifted my one-year old dog with notable, life-improving changes after just six sessions. Our hospital staff (who help with his daily care as he comes to work with me) agree his improvement is considerable. They also agree he might be just about perfect if his mom was able to be a bit more consistent/firm in Mark's suggestions. No shock collars or overtly negative/punishing techniques were utilized in training, which is important to me as veterinary literature and research links human/animal bond strength with NOT using punishing training techniques. I now have tools and tips that have allowed my young dog to make new human and animal friends, have helped me with potty training issues, and have helped him get along better with our cats. The best part is that his willingness to accept new people and dogs seems to expand over time, rather than regressing. I would say our bond and his ability to bring relaxation to his work collegues rather than extra stress is greatly improved from Mark's training experience. Thus, I highly recommend Mark's program for local dog owners. read more

Mark is awesome! He was referred to us by a family friend when our dogs that had spent a year together suddenly couldn't be in the same room without trying to attack. We had tried everything, even another trainer, and nothing seemed to work. Then Mark showed up and everything changed. He was calm and patient with our pups and we started working through commands as a family. With every session, the fights became less frequent. Our once timid dog learned confidence and our wild child learned to listen. We have finally been able to ditch the leashes in the house and life has gone back to normal. We are so appreciative of Mark and the tools he gave us and would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking for a trainer to fix their doggie issues. We can't thank you enough Mark!! read more

After four years of tolerating my sweet little Havanese and her overly-enthusiastic behavior, I decided to get her trained. I contacted Mark and he got back to me the same day. We agreed to a five-week course at his home location. From our very first session, Abby took right to him and his methods. We worked mostly in the greenbelt adjacent to his house. Mark's instruction was calm and clear. Of course, dog training involves mostly training the owner. . . . he explained each behavior, why it was occurring and how my movements and voice would affect Abby's response. Before long, Abby has mastered: sit, stay, heel, down, leave it, take it, under, over, up, off, and watch me. I could tell that she was proud of herself and Mark's enthusiasm was clear as well. He gave me wise advice about desensitizing her to distractions, resulting in a much calmer dog. He was attentive to her behavior and to our surroundings. In all of our sessions, Mark was on time and ready with the next segment. The time flew by. After the last session, Mark let me know that he would continue to advise me through text, email or phone should the need arise. I was sorry to go! Mark really understands dogs and people and has a rare talent for helping them communicate. read more

It was worth every penny. He was always on time, polite, genuine and straight forward with what we needed to do to help our dog. He evaluated our dogs behavior and gave us the tools to help our dog feel more confidant. We can already see a change in our dog and are so happy we made this investment in him. We decided to look into hiring a dog trainer when our 6 month old Goldendoodle puppy, Dude, surpassed the 60 pound mark- he is such a giant puppy it was getting hard to control him when people came to visit. The final straw was that we have 3 children under age 5 and Dude was knocking them over and unintentionally hurting them just because of his sheer size. We were keeping Dude separated from our kids with a baby gate way more than we liked and were frankly starting to have regrets that we brought him into our family. That's where Mark comes in. We chose to do the 5 week private in-home program. It was important to us that Mark was able to come to our home and see the environment that Dude was in. In my opinion, this ended up being an integral part of the training process because we had so many everyday behavior situations that we wanted to work on and having Mark in our house and seeing what challenges we wanted to address was so helpful. Mark has a great personality- calm demeanor and clear expectations of what each lesson is going to be. He really taught us how to use the tone of our voices and body language to communicate with Dude more effectively. I was skeptical that we would see a difference after just one session but I was so wrong! Using the tools and tips that Mark gave us, we saw a big difference in the way Dude acted with our kids and when company came over. Each week we would review the previous weeks lesson, go over any concerns and work on new skills with lots of opportunities to practice. That being said, a huge part of this process is follow through and being consistent. It is truly human training just as much as it is dog training! At the end of our 5 week session, we were incredibly happy with the progress Dude had made and knew that we had the tools to continue on our own. I totally credit Mark for a huge positive change in our household- Dude is still a big doofus- I think thats just the nature of Goldendoodles- but we now have a more calm, controlled relationship with him and he isn't acting like Godzilla towards our kids anymore! Another thing I really appreciated about Mark was how knowledgeable he is about dog nutrition, toys, treats, health, recs for anything dog related. He gave us lots of good tips on the best treats and toys and where to get them. He was also great about following up with a quick email or text during the week to see how Dude was doing or if I had a question. Overall, Mark is a complete dog training rock star! We are very glad to have found him. Even though it a commitment both financially and with your time, I would highly recommend hiring him to anyone!! read more

Our five year old schnauzers Madoc and Auggie were quite the handful prior to our time with Mark. We had completed some pet store based puppy training classes when they were younger BUT both dogs were anxious, barkers, super "busy", and unfocused. On top of that, on their daily bike rides, both had been attacked several times by dogs. Their anxiety and lack of confidence was heightened around new dogs. We decided it was time to get extra support, especially as our long term goal was also to get them comfortable enough to be around our horse. As you could imagine, we had quite a few goals and lots to work on. We chose private lessons over a 10 week period. Mark's understanding of what the dogs needed and his variety of ways to support us was immediately apparent. He helped us to know what Madoc and Auggie needed, maintained positive training approaches throughout, and worked with us not only in the home, but also out at the park, with other dogs, as well as at the stable with my horse! One of the most important pieces of the puzzle was also learning how the breed impacts a dog's training needs. With this in mind, Mark helped us to learn how to positively influence Madoc and Auggie through their natural tendencies. This, in and of itself, was a major step for us compared to other "generic pet store trainings" that can be cookie cutter in their approaches. We knew that we, and our dogs, were getting the training we needed and an individualized approach. For the owner, Mark's ability to demonstrate and teach is clear, positive, and effective, just as it is with the dogs. He helped us learn to be the owners that Madoc and Auggie needed. Add on a wonderful sense of humor, Mark is undoubtedly passionate about his dog (people training) training and is someone that we would recommend without reservation. We will certainly miss our time working with him but look forward to attending his refresher courses! read more

We brought Mark in when we added two 8-week-old puppies to our pack of 3 dogs, ages 14, 10, and 6. The 10-year old (Molly) had always been sweet and loving at home and great with the other 2 dogs, but she has shown aggression toward other dogs. Within 2 visits, Mark identified that Molly was trying to play with the puppies and didn't know how. With Mark's guidance and monitoring, it was quickly established that Molly was the favorite playmate of the puppies--and still (1 year later) is by far the most tolerant of their antics. In addition to that special insight, Mark also taught us basic training skills that we employ to this day. I highly recommend Mark as a caring, skilled trainer for any age dog--and pack of dogs! read more

I've been working with Mark for a couple of years now as I am involved in rescue. He's got a real calm demeanor which is just what is needed when evaluating dogs. I have probably given over two dozen referrals to Mark from families I adopted out dogs to and they all come back to me with positive feedback. He was last working with one of our dogs that is blind and he's doing great. I would recommend Mark to anyone who needs a behavioral correction with their pooch! read more

We found Mark through an internet search and decided to try his 5 week home training sessions for our 12 year old yappy and nervous miniature schnauzer Finnegan. Friends teased us about training for a 12 year old dog--what would be the point? Finny was adjusting to a recent move from a house with his own yard to an apartment with much more contact with other dogs and humans. Well the point is we have a different dog and we are different pet owners than we were when we began this course a short while ago. Cost: Mark isn't cheap--we paid $650 for 5 weeks of in home lessons plus lifelong group lessons. Every penny was worth it! I only wish we had found Mark years ago. You are paying for Mark's expertise, professionalism, calm demeanor and results. If you want to accept Mark's professional advice and follow his directions, this is a very reasonable price to pay for skills necessary to be a great dog owner and have a fabulous well behaved four legged friend. If you don't think you have to change anything you are doing--- it is not going to work. Professionalism: Mark was always on time, he has excellent communication skills, with dogs and people, provided us with immediate feedback, and accommodated our schedule 100 percent. Mark also checked in with us throughout the week via email and was available to answer behavior questions as they arose. Demeanor: Mark is very interesting to hang out with and speak to. His calm demeanor is relaxing and pleasant. He is non judgmental about you and your doggie and only wants to help you improve your relationship with your pet and your pack leadership skills. Expertise Mark understands both human and dog behavior and was able to come up with a plan for us that was 100% suited to our dog, in our situation. Mark was able to give us the skills we needed to become better pet owners and our Finnegan followed our lead- both figuratively and literally. We would not hesitate to recommend Mark in any way. read more

I found Mark through all of the amazing reviews on Yelp and I was certainly not disappointed! He took my little "pit bull jr." into a much better behaved young man. Mark was (still is!) very prompt with communication by text and/or email when I have had issues with my Yorkie/Silky, Guinness. Mark nicknamed Guinness "pit bull jr." as the very first meeting, Guinness felt he needed to show Mark "I am the man of this house!" As his mom, I certainly needed to be the pack leader and instill more confidence in my anxious little guy. Through our 5 in-home session, Guinness became more attentive and eager to please. Who knew?! I am very glad I chose the in-home in my case because I wanted Mark to see exactly what Guinness was doing and find specific solutions to these issues. From one week to next, Guinness was improving ten-fold and even Mark said he was impressed! :) Mark is very knowledgeable, intuitive and hilarious to boot.
