This review is a bit overdue. We adopted a cute little terrier mix from a local rescue and, after having to toss out many shoes and experiencing several days of frustration, hired Mark to train us and our new pup. We adopted a very large 110lb, very anxious young (ish) lab. Mark came to us through a recommendation from the rescue. We went from this dog growling and barking at people, being very hyper when he sees other dogs (as in you will be dragged down the street by a giant animal!) to a much calmer, controlled dog. We literally thought we would never be able to take this dog out in public and he now goes on social visits to petsmart, home depot etc. We did the 4 week class and I really, REALLY thought 4 weeks was never going to be enough. Mark was a godsend for my dog's separation anxiety. My corgi/cattle dog mix would bark, drool, and destroy the blinds when left alone. I seriously wish I could give this review 10 stars. Working with Mark has been such an amazing experience both for our 2-year old pitbull, Broly, and my fiancé & I. When we came to Mark, we were told that Broly was aggressive & reactive. I wanted to try to mitigate this and help him as much as possible. We found Doggie Steps via Yelp in January, so of course I have to review here in case any of you reading this right now are not sure which trainer or training school to choose for your fuzzy family members. I also research everything to the extreme to make sure we have chosen the best person/company possible, and for the best price. We decided to do the in-house 5 week training because our home, at the time we reached out, was just unmanageable long term. Mark has changed our household for the better since I reached out to ask if he had room to take us on as home-visit clients! He's great and i'm sure his group sessions are just as effective. Background on our situation: About a month and a half ago we got a second Husky. We saw a change after the very first session with Mark. Of course we did all the home-work during the week, but that was easy and only took a little bit of time out of our days - so well worth it. While my schedule/work time demands limit my ability for perfection in training (ability to be as consistent as ideal), Mark's insight has gifted my one-year old dog with notable, life-improving changes after just six sessions. Our hospital staff (who help with his daily care as he comes to work with me) agree his improvement is considerable. They also agree he might be just about perfect if his mom was able to be a bit more consistent/firm in Mark's suggestions. We decided to look into hiring a dog trainer when our 6 month old Goldendoodle puppy, Dude, surpassed the 60 pound mark- he is such a giant puppy it was getting hard to control him when people came to visit. We brought Mark in when we added two 8-week-old puppies to our pack of 3 dogs, ages 14, 10, and 6. The 10-year old (Molly) had always been sweet and loving at home and great with the other 2 dogs, but she has shown aggression toward other dogs. I found Mark through all of the amazing reviews on Yelp and I was certainly not disappointed! He took my little "pit bull jr." into a much better behaved young man. Mark was (still is!) very prompt with communication by text and/or email when I have had issues with my Yorkie/Silky, Guinness. Mark nicknamed Guinness "pit bull jr." as the very first meeting, Guinness felt he needed to show Mark "I am the man of this house!" As his mom, I certainly needed to be the pack leader and instill more confidence in my anxious little guy. Through our 5 in-home session, Guinness became more attentive and eager to please. Who knew?! I am very glad I chose the in-home in my case because I wanted Mark to see exactly what Guinness was doing and find specific solutions to these issues. We "rescued" an 8 week old Shih-poo from a lady who obviously raises puppies for profit. She had round worms when we brought her home and had not had any of her shots. Because of that, we were told to keep her completely away from other dogs until she had had all of her boosters. Mark's in-home training was perfect. Having had a Silky Terrier with small dog syndrome, we wanted to make sure Mia was properly trained from the beginning.We did the 5 week beginner program and both of us learned a lot. I am referring to my husband and myself since we needed to be trained too. Mia is a quick study and as long as we, the owners, are consistent she does very well.
