Dogs aren't born knowing how to behave the way humans would like them to, so we as responsible dog owners need to teach them. -we don't automatically realize what we are doing wrong and unless a true professional who really cares can teach us the correct way we can't be sure that we will ultimately have a happy relationship with our pet. -after four years of pulling my hair out and stressful walks with my dog I wound up moving to a new neighborhood, and my dog was totally out of control when I walked him. When he saw people with dogs, he went crazy and I could not stop him from barking and pulling. In fact, he pulled me down a couple of times where I sprained my ankle and another time where I hurt my knee. In fact, most of my neighbors walked the other way when they saw us and complained about my dog's bad behavior. After the first lesson, I immediately knew that I had found something different. She was food aggressive, she was aggressive with our family - bit all of us at least once - attacked our other two dogs and literally went to the bathroom wherever she preferred. I'm not one to give up on dogs but knew that if we kept her we needed help! We decided that if we were going to work with one of our dogs - we'd also work with our other naughty dog to retrain him of his bad habits. IN THE FIRST SESSION we saw significant changes in their behavior! She is so knowledgeable, so professional, and she got my kids involved so they know what to do! We just finished our last session and I'm so grateful to her for all of the tools she's given our family to help our dogs be the best behaved versions of themselves! All of her team is prepared to deal with difficult dogs and help reinforce good behavior, so all of our lunchtime visits included built-in training for our little pups. The team also sent photo updates and left detailed report cards every single day without fail. Lindsey herself is such a boss when it comes to training and is so so patient and welcoming. All of her own dogs are super patient too and were incorporated into the training sessions to help our little pups get used to being around other dogs. Backstory: Ironically I believe there's someone named Shauna who operates the website and Yelp(and does a prompt job responding), but John the caretaker is the one who's phone number is associated with the biz, and he is unable to be reached to line up appointments!! (I contacted them a year or two ago when we were considering using them. We didn't end up needing them, but when we tried them last week when we finally did, John did not decide to call us back.) I'm glad others have good experiences. But that was not ours. ‍

Joel immediately identified the core issues and provided professional, actionable insight on how to actually shift the dogs' behavior, rather than just running through commands. My 81 year old mom moved to an urban setting with a small yard and a neighborhood with lots of…read moresmall, yappy dogs that sets off reactivity in her German Shepherd. Although the dog has been through several training programs, she had recently reverted back to being reactive on leash: barking, pulling, and lunging at any dog that barked at her or gave her a "look". Thankfully I found Rob's Dogs through a search online. Rob offers dog training either through individual sessions sold as a packet of 8 or 3, or you can elect to do a board and train method. Since my mom's dog had done two board and trains with other training facilities in Florida and Texas, I opted for the individual sessions sold as a packet of 3. Not to disparage the other training schools, I want to note that the dog had learned a great deal of commands, but she was a little rusty and selective when doing them and was selectively reactive on leash around other dogs. What we needed was a trainer that could come to my mom's neighborhood and see the dog being reactive in the environment where she was going to be walked. Thankfully Rob's Dogs offered this as an option. It cost a significant amount to do this, but it was possible. The additional cost was for the mileage and drive time to my mom's place. We had a meet and greet at the facility. Rob, the owner, met with us and got the back story on the dog and the current behavior problems. He took the dog and walked her around a bit and near other dogs, tested her response to commands and leash pressure. He explained the package options available to us. He also made us aware that we would be using both a prong collar and e-collar to reinstate her former training. We had these tools, but my mom hadn't used them with the dog since she left Florida, and I had never used them. We were assigned a trainer who was contracted by Rob. Lauryn was super friendly and had a love and full understanding of the German Shepherd breed. She herself had a German Shepherd. She went over the operation of the two collars which I was not familiar with at all. Rob's dogs sent us a link and password so that we could watch some important training videos. His website also had some very useful training tips. I highly recommend watching/reading this information carefully and then reviewing it again each week. It's easy for owners to slip into bad habits quickly which results in their dogs behaving in ways they don't want. You will have to enforce rules and get into a routine. Restrictions can be lifted once the dog consistently behaves as desired. You will find that YOU will have to do the hard work. The trainer and Rob's Dogs will assess your current situation and give you the tools and training to use those tools to reinforce good behaviors. It won't happen overnight. You will need to work with the dog for at least an hour each day to reinforce the seven commands and expectations. As I mentioned, we only had three sessions. This training was going to determine whether or not my mom could keep and handle her dog. Immediately after the first session, we started using the tools and putting restrictions in place inside the house to set the law of the land. Right away, we noticed a difference. While the dog was already really well behaved in the house, it improved her response to us when we walked her outside of the house. The prong collar made a drastic difference in her behavior when she saw other yappy dogs on the walk. I no longer had to worry about her lunging, pulling or barking incessantly in an aggressive stance. She still got up, moved forward, and barked once, but it was all very controlled. I didn't have to use all of my strength to hold her back. The real test came when my mom was able to walk her dog around other yappy dogs. After session two, my mom was easily able to do this, and I felt confident that continuing this training would allow my mom to keep her dog. Her German Shepherd is sometimes still reactive, but it is much more controlled and manageable now. In time, and with continued consistent practice, I believe my mom's dog will eventually stop the reactivity altogether. She has already shown amazing progress and only slips occasionally. If you are looking for effective dog training (well, really we know it is human training to learn how to effectively communicate with the dog), then consider Rob's Dogs. You will work hard to get your dog's behavior issues resolved, but the longterm results will allow you to have a wonderful relationship with your pet.

I usually get a lot of anxiety when I leave my dogs anywhere new, but I felt relatively at ease with my dogs here. We lucked out and found a wonderful dog trainer! Mark Siebel. We got a new golden-doodle puppy this spring, and although we're veteran dog owners, we've not ever had a dog that would be as big as Dickens promises to become. We decided he can't be just somewhat trained and well-behaved because we might not be able to physically control him when he wants to jump, etc. I searched the Internet for dog trainers and found Doggie Steps and Mark Siebel. Dickens just passed his beginner level of training with Mark, and he is well on his way to being a very well-behaved dog. He's still a puppy, but he knows how to sit, down, stay, leave it, and not to jump on people or bark excessively at the door, among other things. Mark has a great way with dogs and tremendous experience. He even helped us with our four year old Sheltie's behavior at the door. Mark comes into the home for the training sessions, which is especially helpful because we learn how to address issues the way they arise in the home, not in some training facility. From the outset, Mark is calm, professional, and very supportive, no matter what issues we encounter with the dog. We have a neighbor with a border collie that for some reason just tweaks both our dogs when we encounter them on our walks. Mark worked with us on specific techniques for that, starting with training our dogs to wait to go out the door until after we have checked outside the door and given the heel command. He taught us how to manage a "wide pass" of anything we don't want our dogs to get too close to, even when all they want is to get close. We're looking forward to enrolling Dickens in the next level of training with Mark when we're finished with our summer traveling (and some reinforcing practice with Dickens - he IS still a puppy despite his increasing size). I have been extremely please with both training and boarding. Mark is a terrific trainer. He is great about scheduling, always arrives on time (I did training classes at my home), and follows the class objectives. He is a very clear communicator - both with training and with the business and paperwork part of things. He is positive, yet firm, in his training. My dogs, Willow and Motion, were immediately responsive to him and his direction. Of course, any dog training is really about training the owner...that would be ME...more than training the dogs! I learned some effective techniques and commands that I am practicing daily, and my two companions are doing very well. What I've learned about my physical "presence" and stance, and use of my voice and tone for corrections and praise has been very effective. There's more for us all to learn, so we will be starting advanced training this week. My goal was to have happy and fun pets, but also to have well-behaved dogs so others love them as much as me. I felt the cost for in home training was fair, since I have two dogs, am able to save travel time, and am able to use the locations the dogs are familiar with for training - house, yard and neighborhood. When I needed to be gone for business for a week recently, Willow and Motion stayed with Mark at his home. I knew they would be in good hands, would enjoy his two dogs as playmates, and that they'd get a little extra training reinforcement while I was gone. Mark even sent pictures every other day and a short video so I could see they were having fun. I signed up for the beginning group class at his house. Cost was $150 for 5 sessions. When I got there I was surprised to see it takes place in his driveway. It was from 9-10 in the morning in the sun. For my large breed dog to be in the sun like that was very stressful he was extremely hot. Part of class also takes place at a nearby park. I wish I had known we would be out in sun for an hour ... I would not have signed up. All the dogs were really hot and it's only April. I can't imagine in the summer. The class also has students at different points of "training" so apparently you go over same thing each week. So weird I did not learn a single thing. My dog was barking for attention and he had me giving him my treats that I brought. I finally said should I really be rewarding him for barking?!? Then he told me to tell him to leave it or something like that. Also the person who was graduating... ummm. She seemed to be at same point as those there for first week. It just wasn't structured. Not my style but maybe that works for others. So with the heat and training style I don't care for... I decide it's not for us. He tells me No refunds. He did say I could come back in the winter but since I don't care for his group class style and how he had me just giving my dog treats for bad behavior to make him be quiet ... I decided no. To me good customer service is making sure the customer is happy with your product and if they're not - you do what you need to to make them happy. Even a partial refund would be nice but nope! Clearly customer service not the priority with this company. Make sure it's what you want before you sign up!! I should have asked more questions. Live and learn. ;-) read more

Finding Doggie Steps Dog Training (Mark Siebel) was an absolute WIN for our family! Mark's communication, availability, accessibility, knowledge, patience, and encouragement are absolutely top notch in an industry where many "claim" to have it all...Mark seriously does. Mark worked with us on prepping our 4 year old Dachshund for her future human baby sister. We had major concerns as our Dachshund is a typical one (nippy/obsessive/assertive) and in no way wanted her to ever be put into a situation she or we could not handle with kids. Our dog now has the rock solid foundation needed to obey authoritative commands on the spot (Leave it, sit, down, zip-it, heel, etc.) and has already performed well with some children and chaotic environment training sessions. Mark is all about proper correction and positive reinforcement! String cheese goes miles and miles with our fur-kid but after 3 lessons the cheese could be put away! She now works to please us (the pack leaders) and is 100% good with some plain ole' petting. Our final lesson was at an outdoor mall which allowed us to demonstrate all our training at once in a non-controlled environment. Her obedience is a night and day difference from before we started till now (5 lessons). Most importantly, her personality and nature hasn't budged a bit. Our same ole' doxie whom we adore - just enhanced with all the commands we need her to know! She is one confident, happy, obedient pup! You can absolutely teach an old dog new tricks. I found Mark with Doggie Steps here on Yelp after having moved from Seattle. We didn't know anyone in the area, and with it being so hot here and not being able to take our dog (with high separation anxiety) everywhere with us like in Washington, we were in desperate need for help. We contacted Mark and had left a voicemail requesting more information. Mark responded to our call within the hour, I believe. We had attempted to start leaving our Theo home alone, but he ended up fighting with our door blinds, which was not a cheap fix. We wanted to start as soon as possible, since we didn't want to be confined to our home. Mark was able to start that same week if we came to him. The drive to Mark's was about a 45 min drive from where we live, but it was well worth the drive and the money! We started seeing changes in our Theo after day one. Mark taught us not only how to make Theo a better dog, but how to be better handlers. We didn't know much of Theo's background since we had adopted him from a shelter, where he had been picked up as a stray. Mark addressed all of our concerns and had useful information and advice with any of the problems we had with Theo. Theo had classes with Mark for five weeks, and here we are 7 weeks after his first class and he is still improving. Theo now stays home by himself, and his anxiety has decreased. Having dogs all our lives, my husband and I never thought we would need a dog trainer for our new two puppies but since we were out of practice, we figured it didn't hurt to contact one. Like what other reviewers mentioned, we went with Mark at Doggie Steps Dog Training because of the positive yelp reviews (can't go wrong with what fellow doggie parents have to say). And of course, it was the best decision we made. Mark is an incredible trainer both patient and knowledgeable. He is also tactful enough to make sure us parents were properly 'trained'. What's also great about Mark is he is very flexible and always worked with our schedule. We selected the private training at our home and it was worth it. There were a few dates we had to reschedule last minute and Mark was always accommodating. My husband and I know if we ever need additional training/have questions, Mark will be the one we call. And we highly recommend Mark to anyone who is looking for a trainer. You can tell Mark is truly passionate about what he does and is genuine with his training. Doggie Steps it is! Having two baby shih tzu's I decided they needed a proper education. They were, after al,l going after mommy's shoes. We opted for the private in-home training sessions and started with basic commands, and at the end of each sessions we were left with homework for the rest of the week. I will admit that I was a little puzzled at first as to why 'I' had to do most of the work. I really thought Mark was going to show up, some training magic would happen and then the end result would be really well trained puppies. Nearing our graduation and final session, I realized that Mark really knows what he's doing as he is giving you the tools to train your dogs and become their leader. Graduation was a success and luckily Marty's credits transferred (from community college) so he could graduate, too. Update: We were recently at Tempe Town lake for a BBQ/volleyball get together with friends, who also had their pups there. Chaos in my home with two super active dogs has to stop. I was referred to Mark the owner of Doggie Steps. His motto "A Good Dog = A Trained Owner". Consistency and repetition is so important. I have an 8 year old Jack Russell, Eddie. I also have a 1 year old Long Haired Chihuahua, Elvis. I rescued Eddie and he came with some issues. He loves to watch TV, Cops is his favorite. He knows the Bad Boys theme song. As soon as he hears it, he bolts into the room growling. He is so excited to maybe see the K-9 dog, a gun fight or a car crash. It is so weird and very annoying. Within 2 weeks, we are making some progress in stopping this incessant TV watching. Elvis is so adorable. All he wants to do is play in the house. He teases Eddie and loves to be chased. He only weighs 4 pounds, so he hides under the furniture where Eddie can't fit. It drives Eddie nuts. It is like a tornado of dogs. We are getting this problem under control also. We adopted Max, our 90 lb pit bull, from the humane society and didn't know much about him. On our first walk, we realized Max was, what we thought to be, "dog aggressive". This is when we decided to research training to find out if their was a way to correct it. We knew that Max would need something more personal than a group dog training class. Once we met with Mark, we went over some basic training techniques to polish up Max's obedience. After two classes, we had a meet and greet with Mark's female dog. We learned how to properly introduce Max to other dogs and came to realize that what we thought was aggression was actually a combination of anxiety and curiosity. We have continued to use Mark's techniques to socialize Max with dogs and his behavior has greatly improved. We recently took in a stray female puppy and after a week of socialization using what we learned, Max is in love with his new puppy friend. My wife has never owned a pet before, so we needed a lot of help when our new Coton du Tulear puppy arrived (Isabella). Mark was referred to us by our dog groomer, and we couldn't be happier with the training that Mark has provided to our entire family. We signed up for the five week in home training sessions, but Mark has provided so much more than what we received in those classes. His knowledge and experience in nutrition, exercise, vaccinations, veterinarians, and overall pet care and safety have been extremely helpful. I found Mark through Google. Once I read the yelp reviews , I immediately contacted him. I wanted to train my 4 month old puppy so I can take him to work with me (at a Senior Living community) and so he can be handled by my grandsons. Mark was great!! He listened to my goals, is very calm and gentle in his approach, and always had ideas to ensure mine and Oliver's success. After just 5 in home classes, Oliver is spending quality time with me at work and he follows my grandson 's requests for a multitude of tricks/commands. Once Mark "trained" us to the consistent commands and body language it has been so much fun to continue to add to Oliver's wisdom. I am more than pleased with our results . We found Mark thru our vet. We have 2 french bulldogs, one 3 year old and the other 1 years old. High energy and would barely listen to us. When we had company they would jump all over them and we would have to put them outside. Well after Mark's training classes, he taught us how to train our dogs to be good dogs. Our oldest frenchie graduated after the 1st class in my eyes. But our 1 year old girl has taken a bit more time. Now they both listen as least our boy does, it will take our girl alittle bit longer. But she is 95% better thanks to Mark. We highly recommend Mark, he does a great job and is very patient. read more

Mark Siegel had worked with our daughter when she got Hannah, a Golden Retriever rescue. So when we needed training for our two young Goldens, two one old siblings Jackson and Ellie, Mark proved to be the correct resource. Mark not only helped train our two spirited pups but he helped us understand and recognize pack behavior and pack dominance issues. Where can I begin! After an in depth search of dog trainers in our area, we decided to trust our gut after a exchanging messages with Mark - and we can not explain how happy we are with the results! We are so pleased we decided to hire Mark. He came to our home for the 5 week puppy training. Mark trained me to train our puppy, Kona. By following Mark's instruction, I was able to successfully condition Kona in all basic commands in a very short amount of time. Mark offers more than just dog training techniques. He also taught us about proper nutrition which made a huge difference in Kona's skin and hair. She has become a very well mannered and happy puppy. Mark was very helpful and patient with my dog Lucy. She is a 5 year old dachshund and quite the handful!! Mark taught me that a good dog = a trained owner! I learned a lot about how to train Lucy. Brought my puppy here for training. We met once a week at my home. I found Mark to be a very nice guy and `EXCELLENT` dog trainer. My puppy Delcey, learned sit, stay, leave it, down, wait, and come- plus some other stuff. Definitely worth the money. Mark also watches Delcey when I am away on business travel. This started back in August 2023…read morewhere I paid to board my older pup and a foster pup because they were not getting along, IB K9 said the boarding date would be about a month out. Long story short, the same night I had requested for a refund when we had to cancel one of our foster dog's boarding after she hurt my older pup. They promised to send my money back. They never did. My older pup got sick after boarding and didn't learn anything basically; they were super communicative until my dog was boarded, then afterwards I had to keep reaching out to ask how she was doing and I got basically one photo during the entire time she was boarded. After I got my older pup back she seemed really sick, severely skinny and when I brought her to her vet, they expressed heavy concern with the facilities because she was clearly weaker and sick and I ended up breaking down crying from feeling so bad for doing this to her. I never even requested a refund for the harm they did to my dog ; I only asked for a refund on the dog that was NEVER BOARDED. I posted a review on Google a few years back when it all happened and in late July 2026, they replied to my google review telling me to reach out via email, only to tell me they won't refund me and state that it's part of the signed contract, but there was no such contract and they are absolute liars. I filed a small claims which they ignored; you can see in the affidavit attached where they tried to ignore / refuse to open the door and accept the served papers. I am now also posting all my interaction with them to warn anyone who is thinking of taking their dogs here. So bottom line is, if you want to traumatize your pup, waste your money, or never get your money back this would be a good place.

Business practices can change over time, and I feel it's important to share my recent experience so others can make an informed decision. I hired Felix to work with my working-line dog and spent $8,000 over four months. Initially, Felix was professional and punctual. Over time, however, he became increasingly disorganized. Sessions were frequently cancelled or rescheduled for personal reasons, and he arrived late on multiple occasions. I continued because for a while the training went well, and my dog was learning a lot from the time and energy I dedicated to him. This is why I bought a second package from him. Felix started using a Dogtra e-collar at very high levels (90-100). As training progressed, this became more frequent. My dog vocalized and showed clear signs of distress. On one occasion, my dog lightly redirected toward me (after a correction Felix inflicted at 100) behavior he had never displayed prior to working with Felix. I raised my concerns via text later in the day, explaining that I felt these correction levels were inappropriate given my dog's age, maturity, and frustration level. Felix dismissed my concerns, responding that "bites happen," and told me I was making too big of a deal out of the situation, which caused me to second-guess myself. He affirmed my dog was 100% safe and noble. At our next session, Felix showed me photos of serious injuries caused by his own dog letting me know my dog wasn't actually handler aggressive like his dog was. Following that session, Felix applied harsh prong-collar corrections while my dog was learning a new command. My dog quickly redirected toward him (no broken skin). Felix became visibly frazzled, speaking aggressively toward both me and my partner, making inappropriate comments about my physical strength/body and questioning why I owned a large male dog and berating me in front of my home. My partner, who is a psychologist, calmly intervened due to concern about the tone and direction of the interaction. Immediately afterward, while my dog was highly aroused, Felix attempted a "leave it" exercise by scattering ham in our backyard without having taught the command first. When my dog attempted to eat the food, Felix administered multiple level-100 e-collar corrections. My dog yelped in pain, and my partner expressed serious discomfort, which Felix again dismissed. Felix then made alarming comments about having been "mauled" by several dogs and having dreams of being killed by dogs. Before he left our home, he told us that once again we were "on track" and he'd see us next session. When he left we were both shaken. That night my partner and I had drawn a line and decided we needed outside consult because our dog's behavior was changing in real time. And the exercise out back crossed a line for us and our dog's safety. The following day, Felix sent a message cancelling our work together. In a short text, he commanded me to return my dog to the breeder, instructed me not to contact him again, and blocked me and my partner on social media and text message. Stunned, I went to his website and emailed him requesting a refund for the unused sessions (over $3,000). He refused, citing a "no-refund policy," though no such policy was provided in writing or verbally at the time of purchase. Since then, I have consulted with multiple highly respected trainers, including two who have competed at the IGP World Championship level. None were familiar with Felix or his work, and all expressed extreme concern about the methods described. They indicated these methods contributed to the redirection issues and confirmed that my dog is highly workable with appropriate training. Felix has the right to choose who he works with. However, cancelling services while refusing to refund prepaid sessions reflects poorly on his business practices and integrity. I am sharing this experience so others can make an informed decision before hiring this trainer. Please know that if Felix feels overwhelmed or in over his head while training your dog, he can (and might) stop the pre-paid sessions at any time, block you, and refuse to give you back money for services that were not rendered.

Sergio is very patient and shared his techniques so that the boys could reinforce the initial training. He offered advice via phone if needed in the future and shared some information on the correct type of leash for Woody so he can be walked safety. We have also boarded 2 of our dogs with Top Dog at their Tempe location and had great experiences. The staff send photos and give updates and the dogs are always happy during their stay. I took off one star because I am super disappointed that Top Dog no longer has a Gilbert location for training (this has been a very recent change) and it is unlikely we will continue using them for training because it is a 20-30 minute one way drive to Tempe whereas the Gilbert location was 5 minutes from our home.
