Came over with a family and friends showing us the spots they used to frequent during their student days. Entered Doggies and we were taken aback by the huge outdoor space with a built-in pizza joint. Best about the place is that they allow dogs in the patio. Just awesome. Besides the outdoor space, they also have a covered outside area that suited many in our group as the sun was beating on us. The staff was quite nice and provided several large dog bowls with ice water for the pups For the non-furry lines, the beer flowed outside and inside quite well. And their counterpart to Long Island Ice Tea was superb. Everyone also ended up eating pizzas at different times. Service was superb. We were glad we weren't there during the school year, however.... In the warmer weather, my daughter who's a student loves Doggies's. They have a fun outdoor area where you can order pizza and snacks as well play corn hole. There are also some tables out there as well as barrels to put your drink on. For drinks, you have to go inside. Out of towner here. Came in to have a beer and I felt like I was intruding on this particular bartender's day. She was younger with dark hair and acted like it was my privilege to be served by her. Thankfully I will be leaving in the morning and won't have to deal with her again. Shocking this place is one of the more popular places in town. **Edit - when I was leaving, that bartender had apparently read my review. So I just went inside to get a drink after getting pizza, no problems there, and then my boy was like let's go get a drink so I went inside. There was no line, just some people standing waiting to order a drink at the bar. So I was waiting patiently wallet out for the bartender to come up to me. I could have called on her to get me a drink, but it looked like she was busy so I let her do her thing. Like 2 minutes later a bouncer comes up to me and tells me I gotta go. Like bro I was waiting for a drink and my boy who was waiting for me to order a drink was like wtf as well because I got kicked out for no reason. He saw the whole thing and said there was no reason I should have been kicked out. I think the reason I was kicked out was basically being kicked for idling, but I wasn't idling I was literally just waiting for 2 minutes for the bartender to ask me what drink I wanted. The 4 other people waiting next to me were doing the same thing and they didn't get kicked out. Bouncers just told me to come back tmr bud while I'm still processing why I'm getting kicked out. Doggie's is geared towards beer, shots, and a variety of coffee like liquor mashups. However, we ordered a couple of cocktails and they figured it out and the drinks were fine. The food situation is very limited but offered until close (2pm). We tried the pizza and a hot dog, both which were actually solid and sharply priced at $2 per slice and $3 for a hot dog. The service was prompt and friendly. The setting is "dive bar" but clean and there are a lot of barstools and booths, rather than tables. Additionally, there was a band which plays sets in a different section from the bar and tables so you could actually hold a conversation, if desired. We will have to come back in the Summer with our dog. Dogs are allowed outside. read more

A small-town pub with a big ego About two years ago, I went to this pub with some friends. The night was completely uneventful--no issues, no drama. Yet a week later, when I returned, I was suddenly denied entry for allegedly displaying "inappropriate behavior"--an accusation that mysteriously surfaced after the fact. It wasn't hard to guess the real reason: likely a few acquaintances of one of the managers, who simply didn't like my presence, stirred up drama. I spoke with the manager, explained my side, and was told the matter would be reviewed--and that, at worst, the ban would be lifted within a month. I'm not someone who goes to bars often. In fact, I haven't returned to that place in two years and have only occasionally visited other pubs during that time. But when a friend recently suggested meeting there, I figured enough time had passed and gave it another shot. Once again, I was turned away--this time by a security guard who could barely remember what the original incident was even about. I'll be in this town for just about one more year to complete my doctorate, but I've decided never to set foot in that place again. The irony? People who've likely seen--and tolerated--far worse behavior are treating me like the problem. And the ones making that call? Let's just say they don't exactly measure up in terms of education, professionalism, or even a clean record. Google us. read more

Fun college atmosphere with indoor and outdoor space. There's picnic tables, metal small tables plus wood benches around the cornhole, pizza station and outdoor bar. Lots of fun in great weather and the pizza is good. Not NJ/NY pizza good but Pennsylvania good. Inside it is dark with some limited tables and lots of standing room so I'm sure it's packed during peak periods in the colder weather. While they advertise dog friendly they certainly weren't dog friendly or people friendly for that matter. We arrived at 1 pm and no one was in the outdoor garden (or inside bar for that matter) we were told, " you can stay but the dog has to be out by 2. Security was rude except for one gentleman who stopped reading his phone long enough to get water for our dog. We had never been there before and all we knew was the dog had to stay on the patio. That was fine but when we asked about food the bouncer/security guard rod me that "no one was going to bring us anything, and we had to go get everything ourselves. read more

Relive your college days at Doggies. A short wait and a scan of our IDs and we were in. It's literally what you remember from you college days...the smell, the cheap beer, the drinking food and people just having fun. They sat us in the back and gave us a block of wood with red on one side and green on the other. We determined that you put the green up to signify that when the wait staff walked by, they could be certain they were actually ignoring you. When our very nice server finally arrived they get right down to business and ask for your credit card...then your order. The beer arrived in about 15 min, the food about another 20 min later. This place is not fine dining so sit back, relax and enjoy...it's really just how Doggie's is. A two person band arrived and played decent music. Huge outdoor area with heaters as well. The beer was ok and enhanced by its delivery in plastic cups. The only thing colder than the beer was the food. The food is best described as being close to what your friend's Mom would bring down to the basement when you all dropped over at their house in high school trying to hack into the cable movie channels. It gets a solid 2-Stars....but wait a second....what dive college bar would you EVER go to with a higher score. It's a DIVE bar and, honestly, a must visit when on the Penn State campus. Have fun! I didn't die yet so that's a plus. Ordered a round of Bloody Mary's and I can honestly say the mix may be condensed tomato soup with absolutely no spice. We asked for them to fix it and they did not want to but after coaxing they made a small cup of spices to fix it and it did. Now let's talk about the hot dog we ordered due to the mandate to order food. The service is so slow we forgot that we ordered them by time they arrived. STAY AWAY! Keep your sweet dog away too :( I am astounded at the way I witnessed the owner scream at and harass a kind customer and her dog for dog-related rules that were not properly communicated to customers or properly displayed on signage throughout this "dog-friendly" bar. The word "friendly" is the complete opposite of how the owner seems to portray herself to customers. It was horrifying to see the owner speak to the customer in such an aggressive and barbaric way, rather than communicating in a mature and professional manner like any adult (and business-owner!!!) should do. I was also shocked she had a tantrum like this on display for all of the nearby customers to see. Whether it's a lack of self awareness or simply that she doesn't care, it wasn't a good look. Her behavior is a master class of exactly how NOT to treat a customer or run a business. No class, no professionalism, no respect. Also, keep an eye out if you pay with your credit card due to duplicate charges. If you MUST come here (though I highly recommend you take your business elsewhere), pay with cash or make sure to get a receipt if paying with your card. This is the worst-reviewed Yelp page I have EVER seen. And it truly does deserve these abysmal reviews... tbh wish it could have a rating for 0 stars. read more

I was in the line and the bouncer stole my ID that was valid and he was very disrespectful until the cop came and returned it. he did not apologize to me or say anything. If my friends hadn't already sat down and ordered their shitty pizza I would've left then and there. Got there at 4. One waitress on and a couple of waiters . Have to order food and it took 50 minutes for a slice and meatball sub. Man this place went down hill . Bring back the skellar. The waitress came over and said we borh had to order food to purchase a drink, which is okay but I wasn't having an alcoholic beverage just a water. Then they said "okay if you want anything else just switch this stupid block over to green, yakno like go" Ummm ok?? After getting our drinks and pizza we were never approached again to check in how our experience was going. We flipped the "block" over to red and paid the check. WORST COSTUMER SERVICE! It was my first bar here in State College just recently about a week ago. Got a bartender who was a middle aged white man. He didn't know what a rum punch (rum with punch...) and he took my card when I opened a tab but never asked me for my name or anything. For a first timer at a bar, I got anxious for the bar to hold my card but my friends told me it was normal. At this point I was sober and did not get my card back, I assumed this was how they kept track of charges. Later that night when I came back to close my tab, the same middle aged white bartender told me "We don't keep cards for tabs." I was drunk at this time and freaking out because the bartender never gave my card back but was blaming me, shrugging, and rolling his eyes. My card was on the bar counter where the cash register was and I told him that was my card and he said they "Found that on the ground." He then proceeded to blame me completely telling me I "should have kept better track of it, I don't know what to tell you." This means he lost my card. He also assumed my last name was Kim because I was one of two asians there even though he never asked my name. I don't know how he kept track of charges if he lost my card and I believe he just charged whatever because the balance came out to $80. I am a petite sized lady and I cannot drink much. For my first time at a bar here, this was a horrible experience. Bartender lost my card and blamed me. I may have been new to bars but even I could tell this was poor service with micro-aggressions as a nasty bonus... Do not recommend going here especially if you're POC. read more

Literally my favorite place downtown, so sad to see the bad reviews. If you're looking for a fun place to hang with good drinks, nice employees, and surprisingly good food then go to doggies. The outside is awesome with the "beer garden" vibe, especially when there's a game being projected. Some of the lower reviews complain about rude staff and not being "dog friendly" but they're all misinformed and dramatic. NEVER seen any of this and I've been plenty of times. read more

I went to the bathroom right after arriving with a group of friends. I get a text in the bathroom that our entire group got kicked out for having sharpies at our table. They moved my stuff and when I asked where it was I was just given confused looks. Bouncer didn't seem to give a rats ass about anything I said to him about me losing my stuff. We went here to have some outside drinks on a nice day and the staff was the rudest I've ever experienced in state college. We were sat out in the shade, but once we saw a table open in the sunlight, we kindly asked to move since we had not yet ordered anything. Two different women were extremely rude to us, one of whom says she is the owner. We asked again WHY we couldn't move, and we were screamed at and told to sit down. We stumbled upon doggies walking around trying to find somewhere to get into and have a few beers. Conveniently it was right down the street from out hotel. It's more of a younger crowd but they played good music and my husband and I had a great time. The manager Lisa there is phenomenal!! Was in town visiting my Alma Mater during the Covid19 scare when I decided to drop in and see what ever happened to one of my old watering holes. Doggie's occupies the same location as the iconic Rathskeller, the subterranean fixture of the State College pub-crawl crowd, but unfortunately the comparison ends there. We were greeted by the hostess, who informed us of "the rules", one of which included mandatory food purchases. Upon agreeing to their terms we were seated outside, in the sweltering heat of what once was a parking lot, despite the much cooler inside seating that was available. Table service proceeded at a glacial pace as we waited at least 10 minutes for a staff member, many of whom appeared to be doing nothing, to stumble past and ask if we needed anything. The beer was cold, although served in plastic cups. The pizza slices were small and overpriced - - I'm convinced they get it from Canyon two blocks away, cut the slices in half, reheat it and quadruple the price. After that disappointment, it was obviously time to cut our losses and find another place to spend our money. Yesterday was my first experience attending Doggie's Pub. As a pub and general alcohol enthusiast I was excited and pleased that they were open. I figured that the manager at the time, Clayton, would be a generally normal human with a baseline level of empathy, however I was sadly mistaken. My ID expired on the 16th, and yesterday was the 16th. He refused to serve me on my birthday like an absolute garbage bag, which means that he not only hates birthdays, but most likely hates having fun in general. It was 26 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground, and the lads and I were properly bundled up with a party of 10. We were the single group of customers there, and the lazy sow wouldn't serve us because he didn't want to come out in the snow. At the end of the day I feel bad for the guy and it makes me question who hurt him in the past, and I do not find it unrealistic that he was likely dropped on his head as a child. Cheers! read more
