Finally... made it to Dogwood. It is nestled in the corner of Riverview shopping mall. Don't blink or you'll miss it! I walked in and Samantha, behind the bar, made us feel right at home. I knew she was going to be amazing after watching her with other customers.. She cares, helps them even with personal stuff, and looks out for them. You can tell there are regulars, they love the people and the restaurant. I love that vibe! I knew it wanted to try several things so I only orders appetizers. We got Chorizo (not tradional, more like a sausage) which came with fries, Provoletta and Log Jammers. She was right... the Log Jammers are addictive, but being a cheese person, my fav was the Provellta - so fabulously cheesy. The sausage was very good as well. My only swith up on things qould be the sauces... which you can do. The 3 mustard sauce comes with .the Log Jammers - pare that with the sausage. The herb vinegar that come with the Log Jammers, pares best with the Provella. And last, but not least... pare the Boom Boom sauce with the Log Jammers. Fabulous! We also got Ribs and mac and cheese. The full rack was huge and had ao much meat. The rub on it was delicious and I'd recommend the spicy bbq sauce which pares well with the rub. The slaw is NOT to mayonnaisey but is sweet. The Mac and Cheese seems to be on the homemade side - creamy but not like it's all processed cheese - more real cheese. Then it's baked with a nice layer on top. We had a great experience and even though I don't usually go to a restaurant more than once, I will be back. The food was great and the people and friendly atmosphere made it so much more. read more

Got a take out order tonight that included a burger with cheese only plus mayonnaise and ketchup up. I understand not putting the mayo and ketchup on a takeout order but I did expect to have some in the container. This was their second chance to make a good impression and they failed...again. I was pleasantly surprised with my dining experience at Dogwood Bar and Grill. We had the wings first. They were very tasty, traditional, medium spiced wings. Next we had the shrimp po boy with grilled shrimp. What a nice surprise! The bread was delicious and the shrimp were perfectly seasoned and a nice size. Also enjoyed the fries. Dogwoods is in a mall next to a supermarket and tucked away in a corner. I didn't know what to expect. I am so glad we gave them a try. It's very solid for wings, burgers, and sandwiches. I think this could easily be a 5 star cute dinner place. To be fair, we came on a like a random Thursday and they were busy. Poppin for a Thursday at like 5 in my opinion and it looked like only 2 servers were there and as a previous wait staff, I get it. We were seated immediately and it probably took about ten minutes, maybe more, for someone to come by. By that time we were ready to order food and because we said we were ready to order we missed out on hearing about the specials . Fried green tomatoes are my fave so I'll definitely be going back to check it out. My dad and I each had shrimp po boys and my mom had nachos. All were very good. I think I'll definitely be going back and checking it out because I think the service issue was more related to how busy they were and not that the service was bad. Def worth checking out! read more

I came in here to grab a quick dinner. I ordered the log jammers. They are like egg rolls but tasty with black beans Monterrey jack cheese & seasoned chicken. I got sliced jalapeños and hot sauce as well because I love a spicy appetizer. Staff was friendly and service was good and attentive even when I changed up some things when I ordered. Staff gave me advice and answered my questions. I definitely will come back here food was good the dessert was amazing and for 5$ a good portion as you can see also. I did take my cake to go but it definitely did not disappoint. They have another place which I will be checking out very soon called metro8. My husband and I stopped in to Dogwood for a late lunch yesterday. The restaurant is more spacious than I expected with a mixture of booths, tables, a private room, and a bar. We were greeted right away and service remained friendly and attentive throughout our lunch. We ordered the provoleta as an appetizer after reading several good reviews about it. While I enjoyed the cheesiness and the addition of oregano, I personally would have liked it better if there had been more tomatoes or some bread served with it. It felt strange to just eat gobs of warm cheese with a slice of tomato. Because I was not familiar with provoleta prior to ordering it, I realize much of my disappointment is my own fault. I went with the Cobb salad as my entree and my husband ordered the Western Burger. Both were delicious and huge! The grilled chicken on my salad was perfectly cooked with really good flavor and the bacon was crispy. The mixed greens, tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs, and cheese were all plentiful and fresh. I didn't try the burger, but my husband thought it was tasty. He also commented that the fries were nicely seasoned. We're glad to have another dining option in North Durham, and I'm sure we will be back soon when we're in the mood for classic American fare. read more

A new restaurant in NoDu! Same folks who own Metro 8 on 9th. Definitely in "soft opening" mode this weekend. Atmosphere is relaxed. As a North Durham resident and foodie, I've been watching and waiting for this place to open. We jumped at the opportunity to sneak a meal in during this busy Christmas season. While I can't say I was blown away, I wasn't turned off by any means. Let me explain. The ambiance is great. Newly renovated, everything looks clean and new. The bar is a good size and there's a nice mix of tables and booths. Space isn't an issue. Service was great. We were promptly greeted by the owner (Cassie?) and seated quickly. Drinks soon arrived. Though, I tried to order cider, which I didn't think would be an issue in a town with several local breweries that make cider, but I chalk it up to a new opening. I'm sure there are just kinks to work out. They stayed attentive throughout and even made some cocktail sauce on the fly when they realized they hadn't stocked it for the fried shrimp. The food: We started with fried shrimp and spinach artichoke dip. The shrimp were plump and nicely seasoned. That's a big deal because I believe that's why Kemp's Seafood went out of business. Their stuff was just bland. The dip must have been good because my family destroyed it before I had a chance to sample. We ordered the chicken Philly sandwich, empanadas, shrimp po boy and fish and chips. I only tasted the chicken Philly but they said everything else was good. The menu has a lot of options and I can definitely see us returning to work our way through it. I also see this as a potential spot for watching Duke games. I've already recommended my friends try, though we've been dying for a new place up here that's not fast food or a national franchise (yes Panera, I'm talking about you). We love local and will support as long as it's good! So, in conclusion. Great start. Very happy with my first selections and looking forward to coming back. Keep up the good work and you'll have some loyal customers. The marketer in me suggests nightly drink specials and weekday happy hour specials. It is a bar after all and those are proven. read more

Very few Vegetarian/Vegan options - for there not to even be a veggie burger on the menu in this day in age is surprising. Vegetables were drenched in butter, negating the benefit of vegetables altogether. Met a friend here for supper today. We were seated right away and ordered the spinach artichoke dip and log jammers egg rolls. The egg rolls have diced chicken and black beans in them and some other things and came with a mustardy dipping sauce. The egg rolls were pretty good The spinach artichoke dip was pretty good also. I ordered spaghetti bolognesa, it was a large portion and very tasty. My friend ordered a chicken pasta dish , I don't remember the name of it. It had boneless fried chicken cutlets over pasta in a white sauce. I didn't try hers , she said it was average. The tables for two are very small and get crowded. Some buttered garlic bread would be a welcome extra touch for the pasta dishes. Overall it was a good meal and I will go again. read more

Went as a group of 5 to Dogwood Grill last night. They are still newly opened so I went in with an open mind and extra patience in supply. There was about 6 or 7 tables eating when we arrived. The wait staff that sat us and took our drink and food orders were all super nice and polite; I'll be it, they looked pretty overwhelmed. Initially I thought the food seemed a bit overpriced, but when it came out you could taste the homemade and i really enjoyed my meal. The chicken philly was good! My partner and I both ordered one and hers was full of veggies and barely any chicken, mine was all chicken and literally ONE pepper. So if owners or anyone are reading this review- perhaps instruct the kitchen to make each meal individually to avoid things like that. My sister ordered her burger rare and it was brought out well done. She still liked it and said it was tasty. The best part of the meal however... THE MAC N CHEESE!!! Omg reader... ORDER THE MAC N CHEESE! It was so so good. My mouth is literally watering right now thinking about it. Overall, it was a good experience. I enjoyed the minimalistic interior, and really think that once everyone that works there gets into a groove of being open and everything, it will be even better. A little hole in the wall place near our local supermarket. Wouldn't have tried it until it was recommended to us and now we go here almost weekly. We've never had bad service, but it can be a little slow to get the check when they are busy. Everything in their menu is good quality. Personally, the only meal I didn't love was their pastas. This was my second visit here, once being a take out salad. The takeout salad was fine, although I had to wait 15 minutes for it. I tried the second time with my partner. I got a salad again and my partner ordered a dozen chicken wings. The salad was ok, nothing spectacular but okay. My partner ate a couple of wings and thought they tasted a bit odd, but felt the sauce was good. She ate a few more and got ahold of a very bad tasting one, so she stopped eating. The waitress came to clear the table and we told her that the wings didn't taste right , maybe freezer burn. The waitress said someone ordered wings earlier today and "they didn't complain". She did report to her manager, we could hear every word she said from the kitchen. The manager told her that she needed to charge us full price for the meal. The manager said we should have told the waitress at the beginning of the meal if we had a problem.. When she came back and told us we said we did not want a refund, we were just trying to inform her that the food didn't taste right. The manager also came out, no direct eye contact, just said in passing "Our wings are never frozen they bake them, then fried. No I'm sorry or any apology whatsoever. Needless to say we will not ever return, and we will never recommend this place. Obviously customer service is dead and gone at the Dogwood Bar and Grill. read more

Food was good tonight. I had the shrimp dinner and it was tasty. My friend had the spaghetti with a salad. He enjoyed it but it has a different taste, some type of spice, I would think. As a resident of North Durham, I want this place to succeed because we don't have that many good options without going downtown. But they really need to step up their game in some areas. Went last Friday for dinner and have been three or four times for lunch. First, what worked: My companion had the fried shrimp dinner and said it was great; she would definitely order it again. I had the pulled pork dinner and made the mistake of choosing the sweet sauce as opposed to the spicy option. The sauce was far too sweet, at least for my taste. However, the key line pie was outstanding. Now for where they need to pay more attention. We had to ask to get the beer/wine list. And when it was handed to us, it was 1) partly mangled on one corner and not really clean and 2) had zero prices on it. I don't know about you, but I like to know what I'm going to pay before I order a glass of wine! When our desserts were delivered (key lime pie and carrot cake, they came with two spoons. Not usually the utensil one eats either pie or cake with. So we asked for forks and the waiter went off to get those yet ye got waylaid by another server who was intent on changing what was on one of the TVs hanging on the wall but needed help in figuring out how to do that. So instead of getting our forks so we could eat our dessert, we sat there for two or three minutes until I was able to catch the waiter's eye and he recalled that his original mission was to get our utensils. All these little annoyances, especially a grubby wine/beer list with no pricing, colored our experience. And would it kill them to add some colorful decor to make the place more visually appealing. Yes, it looks new and clean but boring beyond belief visually. The connections between color and appetite is well established so having some colorful throw pillow on the banquettes and some art on the wall might result in more sales. read more
