I visited this school while on vacation and had an excellent experience. Everyone was welcoming from the moment I walked in, and the instructors and students were generous with their time and knowledge. They didn't hold back when it came to sharing techniques, and the level of detail in the instruction was outstanding. There were multiple black belts on the mat, which created a great learning environment and demonstrated the depth of talent at the academy. I would highly recommend this school to anyone in the area. Nothing better than training by the beach, especially Seal Beach. My first interaction was with Alvin when I inquired...I talked his ear off and he answered all my questions. After taking up to much of his time, I dropped in for a class and had an awesome experience. The gym, the location and most importantly the people. Most of the time stepping into the gym is the hardest part, but there are no egos here. Lots of experienced purple/brown/black belts who roll AND teach you as you go. Drilling techniques until you get them right and are comfortable. Not a one and done situation. I was able to roll with the higher belts and every single person respected where I currently was at in my BJJ journey/post a surgery. Kids side: my son is currently at another gym and after my experience and also being able to watch their kids/juniors class I will be transferring him over once we are in the area full time. One of the best Martial Arts studio that I ever been! My girlfriend invited me to join her to be her dummy at first then I ended joining myself too. I'm so glad I did! This studio is very welcoming to people that are starting to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I am very impressed in their ambiance and especially the instructors that ran this place. Anyways.. time for my gracious review :) First of all, their walls are pleasing to look at. The walls are filled of medals and accolades. Furthermore, the best parts are the motivational Japanese calligraphies that are on their wall. I felt inspired seeing this ambiance, while getting choked out or whatnot lol. The people in here established a great culture of martial arts that it makes me proud of training in here. The instructors are great and well deserved to lead this place to the right path (Black Belts: Rich, Andre, and Bitti). They are detailed oriented instructors, which is a must when it comes to this martial arts system. Plus, they're legit good people that just want to share their knowledge. They call their instructors Professor, which reminds me of a Judo school in Tokyo or a TKD college in Seoul. The design wearing all white from the mats, walls, and uniforms also reminds me of a traditional Japanese martial arts like Kyokushin or Shotokan, which again its super cool especially for martial arts nerd like me. It is like going back in time, but learning modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.. I'm digging it! The people training in this place are all accommodating and very helpful. The higher belts will gladly help you and give you advises (so remember that white belts like myself.. just ask!) I have trained to bunch of martial arts studio back in the days and undoubtedly this BJJ joint is in my top of the list. The staff here loaned me a gi and I was able to drop in for a class. The coaching was top notch, and everyone was super welcoming and friendly. Professors Alvin, Frank, Richie, Kleiber, and Coach Victor are so knowledgeable, patient, and fun to learn from. Dojo is an affiliate of Checkmat BJJ, founded by the legendary Leo Vieira. That means you can expect to learn high caliber techniques from the best, and it also means that you shouldn't be surprised if other Checkmat black belts swing by to train and impart some knowledge from time to time. The facility is modern and clean, with plenty of mat space, changing rooms, and a cozy waiting area. There is a small parking lot, but if you can't find a space, don't worry! There's street parking available as well, so you're covered. This gym is beginner friendly. No one is going to try to give you the "hard sell" or pressure you to join. Also, despite the fact that Checkmat is one of the heavy hitters on the competitive scene, you won't be pressured to compete if that's not your thing. My son has been attending Jiu Jitsu classes at Dojo by Leo Vieira for a couple of months now and I'm so thankful! We did our research in surrounding dojos when we came across this location, found out we know someone who trains here and only gave the highest ratings, so we gave it a shot for our 6 year old. Proud to call this place my home away from home. Never in a million years did I ever think I would step on the mats and try Jiu-Jitsu, but like they say, never say never. A friend of mine had been inviting me for years to just give DOJO a try. It took about 3 years to finally get me on the mats, but I'm real glad I did. I joined back in August of 2021 and wish I had just joined the first time I was invited years ago. The community at DOJO is the main reason why I got hooked. BJJ to the novice can be quite intimidating especially coming from a place with no background in grappling. I definitely felt at home my first time here. The Professors, coaches, and teammates (other members) were so welcoming right off the bat which is why I signed up immediately. The facility is beautiful. Aesthetically, it is very pleasing to the eye and the staff takes very good care of the place. It's clean every time I step foot on the mats. Location is awesome as it's literally a hop & skip away from the beach. After a tough morning session you could grab some great coffee downstairs and take a nice stroll down to the beach. You could bring your surfboard too and probably catch some waves after class (the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle from what I hear.) As far as the instruction, the Professors and coaches here are top notch. My updated review- I recently tried their newly added Fundamentals class (held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6pm). Whether you are just starting out or have had years of training, this class is a must for ALL because they cover foundational movements and techniques required in BJJ. Fundamentals is important so you understand movement patterns, positioning, posture and concepts instead of trying to just go crazy sparring and trying submit someone. There was no sparring at the Fundamentals class, but instead, a lot of time spent on drilling the technique with your partner and lots of Q&A opportunities. And it's also really great that all the higher belts are willing to help out and teach you. It's a fun class and makes you feel less intimidated especially if you are new to the sport. Sometimes it's the little details in a move that help you execute it properly. Also, there was a mix of little kids, teens, and adults. It's almost feels like family fun night especially if the whole family trains. Highly recommend! Also, my 5 year old recently started training and loves it! Can't stop talking about it and excited to train and have fun. The littles class is especially well run and fun to watch. It's a mix of games, conditioning, and techniques. All the professors and Coach Victor are so kind, friendly, and keep the kids engaged while having fun learning jiu jitsu. I am so impressed and grateful for the amazing kids program here because of all the hard work and dedication the owners, professors, and coaches put in every single day. Joined here back in 2019. One of the best decisions I've ever made and I'm beating myself up for not joining earlier! Everyone here is very accommodating, whether its ownership, the teachers, or the students themselves the vibe is family oriented but not cliquey, some other gyms I've seen especially like in boxing get cliquey and people keep to their groups but here it feels like everyone is part of the collective group as a whole whether its their first day or their 2nd year there. Specifically, the teachers Andre and Richie go out of their way to make sure everyone is taken care of and when students are struggling at their Jiu Jutsu, they take time out their day to personalize a training plan for them to get them better. After class too its fun to just socialize and hang out, Although the generally mood is relaxed and chill at Dojo, you still get some of the best training here and great instruction. Training partners are super high level and competitive and there are no easy rolls! I would say the biggest emphasis in the culture here is how everyone goes out of their way to make sure people are treated correctly and fairly, and you do really feel like your part of a collective group that just keeps on growing. It's difficult to understate the importance of learning self defense and the mental benefits of doing so. There's no better time to learn then when you're young and this is one of those things you're kids will thank you for when they're older. This is where Dojo comes in. For a new comer to the sport/lifestyle, Dojo was the perfect way to gain knowledge and develops some techniques. The Professors at Dojo are skilled and comfortable with teaching anyone of any skill level; or even age. I have seen 6 year olds and 60 year olds; of course, the young ones are in a youth program. It is a great gym! Everyone is so easy to interact with, and friendly. Even though it's a physical contact sport, everyone there is so helpful, mature and interested in helping you grow your knowledge that you always feel like you are safe and in good hands. Also, one of the instructors is a legend in the game. And I don't mean, "he's really good!"
