In downtown Newburyport, the gelato and sorbetto were smooth and flavorful with a wide array of flavors for the whole family. It's a small shop with no seating but plenty of benches outside to sit and eat or can walk around with your cone/cup. I love gelato, and I loved this place! Flavor selection was plentiful (one of the most important attributes of a great gelato place!). I chose the seasonally appropriate Apple Cider Doughnut for my flavor, and it had just the right blend of apple and cinnamon, with LOTS of tasty doughnut chunks. It truly was the perfect Fall flavor! The portion sizes were good for the price, and the lady working behind the counter was very friendly. The place is small inside (no seating, no bathrooms, etc.), but if you're looking to grab a dish or cone of gelato to go, this place fits the bill. We enjoyed ours while walking through the streets of downtown Newburyport (a super quaint and beautiful little town!). I hope to return to keep sampling more of their fun flavors. Excellent selection of flavors. Nutella and pistachio were "the best gelato Ive ever had" says my foodie friend. I had to try the taro (not as intense as an ube flavor I once had in DC, another gorgeous purple colored sweet) and it did not disappoint. Im not a lover of sweet items most of the time, so I appreciated that the taro root vegetable flavor was noticeable vs its sweetness. This was my first with gelato, so I also appreciated learning that gelato's flavors are more notable because they use less cream and no yoke like ice creams tend to do. Taro ice cream was surprisingly good. Like, packed with actual taro flavor. I also asked for pistachio underneath but it was a pretty gritty taste that I didn't love. Was very happy with the selection of sorbetto offered - given that they are dairy free and nut free. Decided on the 2 scoops sorbetto $4.75 to share - very berry and lemon. The sorbetto was rich and smooth. My friend asked me repeatedly if it really is dairy free as it was very creamy - something that a lot of places offering sorbetto failed to achieve. The sorbetto was also at the right temperature - I dislike sorbetto that melted into slush seconds after they handed it to you. You can taste the berry and lemon in the sorbetto - definitely the real deal. Given the price point and the quality of the sorbetto, I would definitely stop by again whenever I am in the area. read more

My fiancée and I decided to attend Dolce Freddo Gelato tonight for a little sweet treat after a nice long day on the island. The reviews were good and the establishment was still open so, why not? We got in line behind some other customers and explored the many flavors to our disposal while we waited our turn. Once it was our turn, the problems started... My fiancée asked for a sample of the peanut butter gelato which was greeted by a somewhat disgruntled response from the lady working. Confused but not discouraged, I then asked for a sample of the caramel brownie which received the same response. My fiancée then decided to go with the pistachio, which that same worker responded in a tone that was less than friendly "pistachio??..." At that point we were a little more than confused and were wondering what her problem was. Her partner behind the counter came up to take my order which was given no response at all, also another sign of the hideous customer service at this place. Had to look up the definition of 'gelato' after I went here. Sure enough, 'denser' was one of the ways it was described relative to classic american ice cream. My rum raisin was definitely smoother, creamier and silkier as gelato is also often described, but it was not denser. And that's kind of a problem for me because density is where it's at. It wasn't so much that there were no raisins and barely a hint of rum, it was the lack of density that has me questioning this place. I've had gelato before and it was definitely denser, even when bought from the supermarket. I would give the place two stars but it could be specific to rum raisin. I'm not going to lie, I'm on the fence here. This being said the location is great and since the implosion of Orange Leaf, it's the only game in town in the square. They were steadily busy but luckily when I walked in there was only one person in front of me already being helped. A very nice lady was ready to assist me and my friend noticed it was more economical for us to share a Grande (4 scoops - $5.65) in a cup vs each getting a cup with 2 scoops ($4.25). We chose the orange creamsicle, coffe expresso bean, coffee cookie and caramel brownie. First bite of the caramel brownie and you could really taste the caramel, brownie crumbles vs chunks (which I prefer more), both coffee gelato's had great coffee flavors and the creamsicle was excellent! Reminiscent of childhood days of the creamsicle on a stick. 5 stars for services, my server was very friendly, value for a 4 scoop (generous size) and taste. Poland springs 1 pint water bottles were $1.25 which was also very reasonable for a highly traveled tourist location. read more

You just can't always stop in at the right time and I guess this wasn't our right time! When we arrived via a little walk from the restaurant down the street - there was one couple in line waiting. At first I didn't think much of it, but there was only one person in the place waiting on people and she was on the phone. As she continued to talk on the phone - I wasn't able to tell if she was talking to her boyfriend, girlfriend or a prospective customer, but I was able to tell that it was starting to be rude! As my party of 6 waited for the couple to finally get waited on - our party was able to make all of our choices. One by one we ordered from the large selection and one by one I heard favorable sounds. I couldn't wait to taste mine - Taramisu - but was greatly disappointed in the flavor. It almost tasted a bit on the old side - like some store bought ice cream after you leave it partially opened in the freezer. Now, it's not terrible, it's just not good. The gelato is more icy than creamy, and that isn't what gelato is supposed to be. The flavors are bland. However, I keep forgetting this and going back, giving it another chance, thinking this time will be different. But it never is. I tend to get gelato whenever I'm in Newburyport and this is the place to get it. The servings size is HUGE, at least I think so, for a gelato place. The service is nice. I am a big fan of the hazelnut flavor, but i did try some sort of peanut butter cup last time and it was super creamy. Friend had the blood orange flavor, it kind of tasted like sweet tarts. Wandering around Newburyport and craving a sweet after dinner we were lucky to stumble upon Dolce Freddo Gelato still open in the later evening. They have a ton of flavors and you can try it out. I wanted to try several but the Nutella sample totally won us over and we went with a scoop of that one. The scoop was huge. I think they were being generous since it was later in the evening. I don't remember the last time I had gelato but this has converted me. It was delicious. I may be drooling now just thinking about how good this tasted.
