Sometimes I wish, but the COVID-19 virus just hasn't stopped my craving for ice cream.... In the area today I decided to head over. Yes, things have changed where customers need to call & order - then pay over the phone. Or, you can order & pay online. Approaching the lot there's a HUGE banner with the phone number making it easy. I parked, called in my order. The person who answered and took the order couldn't have been nicer and explained the procedure... which seemed so very strange. But again, I had a craving... nothing was going to get in my way : - ))) I was asked to wait 10 minutes and then approach the counter area, staying 6 ft back ( luckily it's marked). Then, a staff member will ask my name and put my order on the counter.... All packed with a receipt stapled to the bag. No problem.... I did as told and presto! there it was. I managed a Thank you before he shut the wimdow, grabbed the bag and proceeded back to my car. Opening the bag I noticed how well my craving was packaged.... A spoon and plenty of napkins added. Time to eat! I chose the simple flavor Danish Almond Cream which they've been making like forever.... The ice cream itself was absolutely delicious. The almonds seemed to be a bit chunkier than usual.... During this pandemic I've learned that my dentist's office unfortunately is closed... So being extra careful bc stillI chomped.on the nutmeats. All good! Okay, so the experience has changed ... And sometimes new ways take some getting used to... BUT, I was there to satisfy my craving. And this visit did just that! read more

I won their free frappe friday contest which was super cool but when I got it, it fully tasted spoiled. Maybe it was the milk? But I genuinely couldn't drink it. Didn't complain because it was free but like, still a let down. I fear that Hodgies has changed their ingredients recently because to me the quality is noticeably different and lower. I am not fully sure about how the ownership between the locations is, but at the Amesbury location I am seeing the same problem. We bought a gallon of the strawberry ice cream and it was way too aerated. Had no substance or flavor and the texture was awful. Extremely disappointed as this has been my favorite icecream place since I was a kid. Tourists might not notice the difference, but us locals do. read more

Busy roadside ice cream stand at this point, since most places are closed this time of year or have limited hours, but the line moved quickly. Huge portion for a single scoop, very delicious milky ice cream. Impressed my kids with their cups of ice cream - they were huge and they put the candy toppings both in the bottom of the cup AND on top, for good distribution. 10/10 for a big tasty cone of almond joy for me. Also liked that they had some New England staples like grape nut and moose tracks ice cream. Large portion warning! My friend and I each got their smallest one scoop and it was more than filling! $4.50 for their smallest cone or cup. I got the coffee cookies and cream and my friend, the chocolate coconut almond which was one of their specialties listed on a separated board. Both in a cup with a sugar cone on top. The cookies and cream contained a large amount of crushed Oreos and the coffee flavor was very prominent. Mine was a little more frozen/hard than my friends and a little on the "too sweet" side for me but very creamy. My friend enjoyed her chocolate coconut almond and her only comment was it's softness. A solid, homemade ice cream stand with very nice young ladies working the counter. By the time we finished and were leaving the parking lot (around 5 p on a Friday) they were pretty busy. Nice stop with delicious ice cream. Convenient location. On busy days, the gravel covered parking lot fills up very quick. When we appeared here recently, there were only 2 chocolate flavors - chocolate and chocolate maple nut. Driving up I-95 from NY to Maine. At the last exit in Mass we stopped for a break and found this homemade ice cream stand. (Actually was recommended in the Drive I-95 book we were using). The ice cream was really rich and delicious. I had the peanut butter chip. Kids had chocolate marshmallow (I took off one star for them cause I don't like marshmallow in ice cream). Their small size... is four scoops. I repeat. Four. Scoops. That's really all you need to know. Oh, and they have tons of unique flavors and toppings to choose from. I couldn't resist getting the Peanut Butter Lovers sundae specifically because there is a photo posted of it here on the Yelp page. It did not disappoint!! I could barely eat half, but I would do it all again if I could -- I plan to. (Ice creams here are best for sharing.) However I will say that my bf got a small size with almonds and sprinkles in a cup, and it came in a soft-drink cup. Like, a tall skinny cup that you would get a large soda in at McDonalds. I don't think this was the most efficient vehicle for ice cream. It was kinda awkward to eat and since there was such a small surface area there were barely any toppings on there. The owner makes sure to use only the best ingredients as well as some local flavors (Cider donut ice cream or cider donut sundae using Cider Hill donuts anyone?...Yum!) They carry 5 sizes of ice cream ranging from 1-5 hearty scoops! One scoop, a 1/4 kiddie, a kiddie, a small and a large. Not just because I work there, but it really is a great place to visit! Delicious ice cream in a huge array of flavors, great non-fat and sugar free options, friendly staff and fun atmosphere!! This is a relative of Hodgies in Amesbury (or is it merrimac?). As if us fatties from northern ma/southern NH need not one but TWO huge ice cream places. "Small please!" "Um, are you sure? That is like 6 scoops" haha i don't know but its really ridiculous like that, plus its richardsons I believe so its really delish and local. I actually prefer Hodgies over Hodgies too, i just like the location better but they basically have the same thing, same ordering system (study the ice cream menu to be sure which size you can handle). You always have to chuckle when you hear people trying to order a regular cone, then learning the low down on what each size entails. Its a perfect ending to a perfect beach day. read more

I LOVE Hodgie's Too! I always try one of their special flavors when I go - they're always changing and there's always a few that I want to try. And their regular flavors are great too - they just added Kahlua Chip as a regular flavor! Make sure you bring cash - they don't accept cards or checks. And they're seasonal, so you're out of luck between October and March. And if you think you want a small, order a "one scoop" or a "quarter kiddie" because the small is huge. My heart melts for this ice cream. I ordered the coffee chocolate chip which was the perfect combination of creamy, chocolate, and of course coffee. My eyes screamed of delight when I saw the size; the small is HUGE. The variety of flavors was a bit overwhelming, but by no means a downfall. There is a flavor for everyone- mint chocolate chip, moose tracks, pistachio walnut, thunderstruck, etc. You want it? They'll have it and it will be delicious. I've been coming to Hodgies since I was a kid and it's always a stop we make during our time at the beach. The prices are decent and the portions are HUGE.
