Cream is amazing, and they offer so many options... big, small, chocolate dipped, sprinkles etc. They are now my go-to for party desserts. Being an Italian from Brooklyn where you cannot throw a rock without hitting a good bakery, I found myself upstate for St. Josephs Day. Needing to get my fix on some zeppole for St. Josephs Day I saw the sign that they had them. Upon walking in I felt like I walked into someone's dream that died. The store is too big for what they have, and they have more shelves than they have products. They charged Brooklyn & NYC prices (even higher than some Brooklyn spots) but deliver what you'd expect as Poughkeepsie quality. I believe the owners had a dream of opening an Italian Bakery where there really aren't any, and the dream just died for them. Very disappointing as I wish I could find a place for great loaf of Italian bread. read more

I hate to be the token guy that starts out his review by wishing he could leave NO STARS, but this place really brings out the worst in me. The cookies and cannoli are some of the worst I've ever had. Upon first bite into the cannoli, I felt as though I was transported to a Chinese restaurant in which I had ordered some really bad crab Rangoon. I was warned about this place by people that had encountered some moldy pastries. This lack of turnover doesn't surprise me given how few customers visit this place day to day. As a born-and-bred Bronx girl, I need to be close to good Italian bakeries. Even though I moved up to the Dutchess County area over a year ago, I just discovered Dolce a few weeks ago and let me tell you, Dolce aims to please. The breads are perfect (especially the pane di casa!) and the pastries are amazing. Dolce carries St. Joseph pastries year round (BONUS!) and, even better, they have Italian donuts. I haven't seen a bakery that carries those in a long time. Do get yourself a sugar jelly. They are huge and sweet, just like grandma used to make. Dolce's cannolis are out of this world and are reminiscent of DeLillo's (Bronx bakery) with the little chocolate chips in them. Also be sure to get yourself some rainbow cookies, because who doesn't like those? Extremely spacious for sitting, too. You can walk in and get a box to go or sit at a table for a bit of pastry and a cappuccino. Great staff, great treats, great breads. Also, they sell Manhattan Specials. Mmmm! Coffee soda! read more

We've been going to Dolce's for years. Best Italian cheesecake in this area. All their pastries are delicious. In the summer I can't pass by them without getting a gelato. I was born and raised in Poughkeepsie, and used to come here frequently with my family. Now I live in Boston, but I make it a point to stop here every time I come home to visit. Never had a bad pastry here. The cheese danishes and zeppoli are my favorites. We've ordered cakes here too, which were delicious. When you walk in, the smell of the fresh baked goods really hits you and only makes you hungrier. It's the kind of bakery where I go with a few pastries in mind that I want to get, but I end up getting several more because I want to try something new. have been buying desserts from Dolce Bakery for years. Why? They are the BEST! But I didn't realize how great they are. I just bought a cherry cheesecake (never purchased there before) and it was PURE HEAVEN. The cheesecake was light and creamy without being "airy". The cherry topping was so delicious - not too sweet at all. (I am not into cherries.) I don't know why I am so surprised how good the cheesecake was since I have always loved this bakery! You must try the Napoleon sheet cake for a special birthday event or a shower, etc. It rocks!! Some people have told me they think the bakery is too expensive (have you ever bought ingredients to bake a cake form scratch these days? Not cheap). As someone who is Italian, has been patronizing Italian bakeries for six decades now, has lived and shopped in Italian sections of NYC for most of my life (where there are Italian bakeries on every other street corner and the competition for customers is keen), I know good quality. I've tried a variety of their items over several visits and find the bakery to be average quality. Some things we purchased were decidedly off, some were mediocre, and some were spot on and wonderful. A top notch bakery does not have such variations in quality. Another commenter mentioned the bakery's reputation for being overpriced and differed with that opinion. I do not. I have found most of their items to be overpriced, even compared to NYC prices! For example, their little bags of anisette cookies (which, when we weighed them at home were 6 or 7 ounces) cost $7.50 each, which comes out to about $16.00 a pound!!! That is OUTRAGEOUS! I can go to most first rate bakeries in NYC and pay $10 to $12 a pound (Example: Venieros, on the lower east side, one of the priciest bakeries in NYC, and which has tourist busses stopping by on a regular basis, charges $10 a pound for most simple biscotti, such as anisette biscotti), and if I go to a shop in a residential neighborhood as opposed to a tourist area, the cost is less. THIS PLACE CHARGES MANHATTAN PRICES. That said, I applaud any decent bakery up here in the Hudson Valley, where there are not enough to go around. I applaud the efforts of the friendly immigrant owner, working hard to make a go of it in his adopted country. And I will visit again, though I won't purchase any overpriced items anymore! read more

My wife and I stopped to check this "so called" Italian Bakery out on 4/24/16. Let me preface by saying, that I am an authentic original Italian. Sicilian to be precise. I was born there and I know what products in an Italian bakery are supposed to taste like. You know, like the one's near East 187th Street & Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. We purchased several Napoleon pastries and miniature cannolis. They turned out to be the most disgusting pastries I have ever had! Shop Rite sells better tasting pastries. The filling in the Napoleon's tasted like wax. The consistancy was liked three week old tainted pudding. They were repulsive to the point that after tasting one (and almost serving them to guests), I threw them in the garbage! The cannoli's were mediocre at best. One was eaten and the rest went into the garbage. I should have known when the guy who served them didn't ask or sprinkle white powdered sugar on top of the cannoli. First sign of someone who knows nothimg about pastries. This place is the pits. Do not buy anything from this place. I have NO IDEA how this place got 4+ stars! Perhaps from patrons who don't know what real pastries should taste like. Just awful. Buyer beware! read more
