I recently discovered Mad Batters/The Baker's Tale in Highland, and I'm a fan! These two bakeries operate out of the same building - one is gluten-free and the other isn't. The pumpkin cheesecake from Baker's Tale with the rum whipped cream is out of this world good. I went back to buy up what they had in the case, because it's so delicious! I've also had their chocolate coconut scones that they supply to Mercat 1915, and those are also divine! Can't wait to try even more. read more

Bought a cinnamon roll and a canolli. The cinnamon roll was a generous size for the price, however, it was dry and stale. I could tell that it would have tasted good The canolli, although my emailed receipt claims jumbo, was rather average sized. The filling was okay, but the tube ended up being stale and crumbled just being looked at -- but that's not a shock, because when I left, I noticed the box of premade shells from Restaurant Depot in the kitchen window. They charged me $4.75 for stale, premade shells. Not a bakery. They also charge a fee for using a credit or debit card, which is unforgivable in this day and age. All in all, disappointing and not worth the trip. read more

We ordered a 9" apple pie. It was made very quickly. There was a light sugar sprinkle on the crust but the pie isn't overly sweet. It's simply perfect, not under or overdone. We dug into it before we could get a picture of how classic it looks. We thought we wouldn't be able to finish and would have to freeze. I have a feeling this will be gone by tomorrow. I've had several of the bakery items from The Baker's Tale but the carrot is my favorite. It is not too sweet, as so many carrot cakes can be. The frosting and cake body complement each others' flavors very well. 'Luscious frosting! And the cake's texture would not make anyone suspect it's gluten-free. I'm also a huge fan of their gluten free lemon bars. Like the carrot cake, they are not too sweet. 'Not too sour, either. The whipped cream on top and ratio of custard to crust are appropriately balanced so that none of those elements overpowers the others (in flavor or texture). In addition to their products being delicious, everything is so fresh. I'm looking forward to trying some of their breakfast items from the grill soon. Also, because their staff is friendly and helpful, buying things there is a really pleasant experience. Such a great place to stop into for breakfast and/or a sweet treat! read more

Staff was super attentive and really nice. I got brownies a cheese danish and one of their new breakfast bowls. Brownies were DELICIOUS! The danish was scarfed down by my friend and he asked where I got it so I'd say that was a win too. The breakfast bowl was filling and I will be back for more! read more

I stopped by to check out the new place on a Weds morning. While clean and nice, the pastry I got was rock hard. I mean hard. So much so that it broke into pieces in the bag. Certainly not fresh Obviously it sat around over the weekend and Monday and Tuesday while closed. Unacceptable considering a small coffee roll cost almost 4 bucks! The sandwich was cooked fresh, but damn that pastry was horrible. Don't know if I will revisit I had a chance to look at some of these reviews Its a common theme. I live within walking distance from this establishment. I stopped by to pick up some pasties for my friends birthday and the food was amazing fresh, delicious and yummy. My birthday friend is Italian and they have the best cakes and pastries around. The lady who served me was so nice and understood what I was looking for. Hot coffee was brewing. I highly recommend this place to everyone and they had me going back for a breakfast sandwich that was delicious too. I give the lady who runs this bakery a 5 star rating. I tried this place for the second time! I bought apple turnovers that were so dry I threw them out! I bought a bourbon Pastry that was delious. The chocolate custard donut was just ok. I also purchase a lemon meringue pie that I have not tried yet! They ran out of bacon at 10:30 am on Sunday so I could not order a bacon and egg sandwich. read more

I am not sure when the merge happened, but I have been a customer to Mad Batters for a few years now. I can not speak for the regular bakery treats, because we use them for their amazing gluten-free cakes! They have recreated several favorites for my boyfriend who is gluten sensitive, all delicious! This last creation was a four-layer chocolate cake with whipped peanut butter icing, AMAZING! You would not know it was gluten-free! (Mad batters use to be a gluten-free dedicated kitchen.) The only thing I might suggest, having a separate display area for the gluten-free items, they were in the same case with the regular treats, very possible there was cross-contamination. read more

My husband and I stopped by for lunch, he had the pastrami reuben and I had the B.A.S.T on sourdough and two spanakopita for later. OMG!! Best decision we made this morning! We were very excited to support this local business, but I was utterly disappointed. We spent almost $50 and ended up throwing out over half the stuff. I don't mind spending 5.25 on a bakery baguette, however, it was extremely hard. Napoleons we're okay but hard. Cannoli was stale. The cheesecake brownie looked delicious, but I literally couldn't even take two bites. I am just disappointed from spending a lot of money and having to throw out most of.
