To be honest I'm still not sure what the correct ratio of iciness to creaminess should be for gelato, but just based on flavors, Dolce Neve deserves 5 stars. I've been here twice and the flavors offered were different both times but each blend was unique and tasty. I literally had no idea how some of the combinations tasted, but the staff was friendly and let me try a bunch of samples. Also, the taste of each was super strong and fresh. We tried a deliciously light marscarpone with lemon zest, a toasted nutty pistachio, a flavorful robust whiskey and pecan, a rich chocolate, an interesting sweet corn and blackberry, and also sweet potato and cinnamon. This is the best gelato I've ever tasted. I tried the tiramisu and it was just as good as the one in Italy. So I got the coffee and tiramisu. I wasn't in love with any of the flavors nor the ice cream itself. I felt the gelato wasn't creamy enough, but instead was more of an icy taste. I was really stuck on what flavor to get because I didn't like any of the flavors. I end up getting the flavors I did because I felt that it was better than the other choices. I just didn't want to be that person to not get ice cream when everyone else got something. It's good ice cream but it is definitely not gelato I remember. First impression going in is the weird smell... I don't know if we came in at a bad time but it did not smell like an ice cream shop, it smelled like trash or something gone bad. Then where's the ice cream? How does it look like? No idea... The flavor names are kind of all over and the ice cream is covered so u cannot see how it looks like which i get is for better preservation but i kind of never liked that idea as I think that is the most imporant thing in food, you need to see it! This is a very small and quaint little gelato shop. The lady behind the counter was very friendly and polite, and the gelato is absolutely delicious. It's far from pretentious, instead it is extremely welcoming. I loved it and will be back! Wow. Just wow. I am not a big ice cream person, I know, I know, I'm weird. But this gelato was incredible. It was light, creamy and just sweet enough. I got the Crema Dolce Neve (custard with lemon zest) and the vegan watermelon in a waffle cone and I ate every.single.bite. I also tried the Matcha tea which was delicious but they had one scoop left and my friend got to it first. My husband tried the Blackberry Goat milk one (probably the wrong name) and he loved his as well. The ingredients are all locally sourced which I can totally dig that. Charming spot with terrific gelato and friendly owners. We tried five flavors across two (heaping) medium cups: goat cheese and pecan, torrone, crema dolce neve, 70% chocolate with candied orange peel, and hazelnut. All were excellent. The goat cheese didn't pop on my sample spoon (still chilly?) but it was great in the cup. The hazelnut (which is my universal standard for comparison) was right up there with the best (which for me is Gelateria Cavini in Florence). And the chocolate with orange peel was simply amazing. Wow! I can see why this place has earned such an awesome reputation in such a short amount of time! Their flavors are super creative and the sheer number of different flavors makes choosing really hard...even with samples! The samples just make it harder because they are all so good! I had the Texas Bourbon Whiskey Pecan which had the most incredible balance of flavors it is pretty much indescribable. I think if I got a large cup I might've even gotten a buzz. LOL My mom had the chocolate granita which was sooooo rich I can't even imagine how much cocoa they packed into it. Amazing stuff. Only complaint would be that it was really hot in there on a late afternoon in late July. I get it, it's an old quaint little building on 1st street but instead of sitting in we opted to go sit in the car in the a/c (I know, not very earth conscious of an Austinite but damn even if I'm eating ice cream I need good a/c in 100 degree weather). Excellent gelato! This place is an Austin institution. If you visit you must try this place. They have over 300 rotating flavors so there's always something new to try. I recommend the Madagascar vanilla gelato, but they are all great. The goat cheese is extra creamy, yet refreshing. The salted caramel had the perfect amount of salt to balance that sweetness.
