I PREPAID my reservation to make sure i got the right car. My plane was 4 hours late arriving into JAX due to weather. I was forced to pay $150 extra to pick up my car later than I expected (4PM). I would leave no stars if I could. I already pre-checked and waived all extra coverage but the guy at the counter forced us to choose a coverage option as a condition of taking the car. Also, he claimed rewards are no longer "a thing" so the partner driver is an extra charge. This amounted to an extra $120 for me. There are so many other options on site - please don't make the same mistake I did and choose another company. I have never written a negative review for anything before but this, I feel I should, if you ever plan to rent from Hertz or Dollar through Expedia. I had a horrible experience with Hertz/Dollar after making a reservation and after checking in online the day prior so that I would only need to pick up my keys upon arrival. When I went to the counter there were no employees and a dark desk. I asked another car rental where I could get my car and they directed me to go to Hertz and pointed to a line I should stand in. I waited in that line for 35 minutes, when I reached the front the employee quite rudely said, "I will not help you, you are not a gold member. Go stand in another line" I told him I checked in already and only needed the keys and that I was directed to this line. He refused to help me. I waited 1.5 hours in the other line only to get him again. After waiting for over two hours in lines, he told me he didn't have a car for me and the only thing he could do was give me an electric car. I told him I could not take an electric car because where I'm driving there are not enough charging stations and I had ordered a gas vehicle. He was extremely rude and when I asked to talk to his manager he told ne that he would not get the manager and that "I could stand at the counter until the airport closed waiting" I asked again to please let me talk to someone after waiting two hours with my 78 year old mother and He refused to let me speak or call an authority. I did not get the car. I have traveled for 40 years for business and was never met with such rudeness. Needless to say, I would not recommend this company to use when traveling. read more

We received a defective rental car from Dollar at JAX. The alarm kept going off every 5 minutes on day 2 of the rental. We could not even leave the doors unlocked and the alarm was still beeping. We were asked to leave the STA Wildlife Sanctuary because the car was going off and freaking out the animals nearby. After we exchanged the car and told the CSR at the counter about the $70 we were not refunded from the wildlife park, the CSR say they would takr the $70 off the bill. Here I am nearly a month later and back and forth with Dollar and no $70 discount for inconvenience. Not to mention the hotel kept waking us up because the alarm went off all night. Understandable, but there was nothing we can do. The doors were unlocked, we could not use the fob, nothing! It just kept going off. We were staying in St. Augustine, an hour away. We had to drive the hour to get an exchange. I find it ridiculous they would not honor the $70! read more

The clerk was barely okay, though the attempts at pushing you pay more for unnecessary add-ons get old and the classifying of small cars as "intermediates" is dishonest. The car was not very clean, and after a few miles we noticed that the "non-smoking" car had a vague smoke smell and several holes burnt into the upholstery. When I finally was able to reach someone in customer service after we had driven to our hotel (after 20 minutes of futile efforts), they said that they could not help me and I was directed to the website. I filled out a message form so that I would not get charged for the holes. I never received a response. The worst part was that my Nissan Sentra "intermediate" car's seat was worn out and very uncomfortable, at only 44,000 miles. It provided no back support and made driving miserable, despite attempts to try padding it with towels. The backache that it gave me lasted throughout the trip. And it was not a bargain. We booked a car through priceline. When my mother arrived to get the car, she realized unfortunately she had an expired credit card. The car had already been paid for, she needed to pay a deposit. They wanted to charge her $1000 to use her debit card, which she wanted to use to pay for it. They wouldn't allow anyone else to use their credit card JUST FOR THE DEPOSIT. Mind you, the car was already paid for. Then, somehow, to have someone else take over as the driver, they got charged a $475 NONREFUNDABLE DEPOSIT and then weren't even sure if they had a car at all? The counter clerk was not helpful, it's impossible to reach this place by phone, they don't pick up and the corporate number leads nowhere. Why is there a huge fee for debit and a NONREFUNDABLE deposit for anyone in her party to use it? Why not just add him as a second driver if that's a big deal? They needed a car so they took it but THE DEPOSIT even if it's 475 instead of 200 for being a different card than hers should be refundable. That's MORE than what it cost to book the car for the entire week! Did I mention IT WAS ALREADY PAID FOR! What a scam. Anything to get any extra fees and ZERO customer service. read more

I reserved a car online through Dollar. $43.17 a day for 3 days So roughly $164.00 total. Arrived to pick it up, man behind the counter said I'll have to charge you $500 deposit because I used my debit card. I asked to put it on my credit card. He said I have to call the 1-800 #. I did. Man on phone said, I'll have to cancel and rebook. I specifically asked for the same rate, Man agrees. went back thro the process and now it's $678.00 for 3 days. No help from the guy behind the counter. He said I have to call. was on the phone for an hour and after the lady said I should be good now for $163.00, well no it was still 678.00 called again and was on hold for 30 minutes with no help. Don't rent from here. Save your time and headache. I ended up renting from Enterprise with no issues. I WILL NEVER rent from Dollar again! read more

I did, and NEVER got a reply.** If you've arrived here at this review, you're in one of two precarious positions: you're either about to book a car with Dollar in Jacksonville, in which case, you need stop right now and keep reading; OR you already have (in which case, you should look up the cancellation policy at your point of purchase). Just to be clear, the single star is simply because they didn't try to murder me, and I feel like that should count for something. Just kidding - yelp won't let you leave a 0 star review. Let me start by saying that I have never even considered writing such a negative review before. I'm a pretty reasonable person, and like to give organizations the benefit of the doubt. I also recognize that we're talking about a car rental company here, so one should always approach with the feeling that they might be getting scammed. I booked my reservation with Dollar about a month in advance - via prepay on dollar.com since it was cheaper. I got a really great deal compared to what other rental companies had to offer at the time. Now if you book on dollar.com, you MUST print a special e-voucher and bring it with you - something that was stated in the confirmation email. It's not in big font, but it's there. Do not forget. I did, and that's where my experience got real. I arrived at the rental counter and was greeted by what I can best describe as a female Oscar The Grouch. She didn't really say "next" so much as she growled it. I handed her my license and credit card, and greeted her with a big smile and asked how her day was. This kind of charm usually works well for me, but this lady was a special kind of pissed off. "Voucher!" she barked... and I profusely apologized for not having it. She turned her monitor around and tapped her finger on the screen (hey what did that screen do to you, lady?). It read "please ask customer for voucher." "Next," she yelled. I was baffled. "Excuse me, but what can I do? Is there anywhere I can print this?" She told me it was too late, and once she pulled up the reservation, she had to activate it. I asked what I could do, and she told me she could rebook me right there at $95/day for a compact. Mind you, I had a reservation for a full size at $90 for 10 days. She also told me I'd need to call the number on the voucher to cancel my reservation. All I can say is - if you're still considering booking with Dollar, you should be prepared for anything. I pulled out my phone, opened Priceline, and immediately booked a pay-at-counter reservation at Avis. For 10 days. At $85 total. I called to cancel my reservation which - as printed clearly on the voucher - I could do up until my reservation time. I called with about 45 mins to spare, and the rep said it was too close and she couldn't do it. I pressed, and she said she would "escalate". She lied, and it took 2 more calls before I got my money back, minus a $25 cancelation penalty. As you would expect, each subsequent agent had no record of my prior calls. Some takeaways: * don't book a month in advance for Jacksonville - you'll get a better deal closer to your rental date * if you're still booking with Dollar, don't forget your voucher, because there is nothing they can do for you * the Avis staff at JAX is awesome read more

They completely took advantage of me. I was so late for flight that I just handed them the keys and ran. They charged me an absurd amount for gas. I didn't have time to get gas, but I only had the car a total of two days and the tank was nowhere near empty. I called and she basically told me to prove that it wasn't on empty. Booked a package deal through Expedia for $600 for airfare, hotel and rental car for three days. I know the hotel took $90 and airfare was running around $450 by itself. I'm estimating my deal around $75 for the car although I never saw the "voucher" from Expedia he used to clear the rental. No wait at the counter, plenty of people inside and enough outside to make it to my car quickly. I was concerned when he said "You have a sub-compact." I usually go cheapest since the car sits at my hotel or destination for days on end. I walked out and was handed the keys to a fully loaded Ford Focus, brand new. After reading all the horrible reviews about this location I was concerned about a rental I had already booked and paid for. I had guests coming to town and I needed a large vehicle for a week to shuffle them around. I had reserved a Chevrolet Suburban. Originally I wanted a mini van but the prices were too high and the Suburban was much cheaper for the week. When I arrived at the counter I was told that they didn't have a Suburban. Immediately the hair on the back of my neck stands up based on all the bad stories I had read. The clerk asked how many passengers I had. She said, "I can give you a nice mini van in place of the Suburban if that will work for you." Again I'm poised for the up charge and she says, "You can have it at the same price." Okay, based on all the bad reviews, when does she hit me with something? The only thing you do need to watch is bringing the car back, fill up near the airport and bring the receipt with you. I had already read that on the agreement form so I was ready with the receipt. No problems at all with the transaction or the vehicle we used for the week. All that stress for nothing. read more

The front desk clerk was extremely helpful when I had a difficulty with my reservation. She was patient with a couple of tired travelers and we were able to finalize our rental. The garage staff was friendly and very funny. Y wife and I were welcomed with open arms. The garage staff handling the return was patient while we emptied the car of our belongings. We received our bill and were on our way very quickly. We will use Dollar at this airport on our next trip to Jacksonville. read more

To start, we rented through a 3rd party HolidayCars.com and set up the rental a couple weeks prior to the travel date. I set up the rental dates from the 9th of November to the 17th of November at 12:00pm. I had the confirmed reservation from HolidayCars that had the reservation number. Upon arrival to the terminal, the rental agent seemed to be more interested in texting than helping customers, but no matter, my wife made it to the front counter. She provided a copy of the voucher from HolidayCars as was required with the reservation number from Dollar rental, the dates, name of my wife on the voucher, etc. She provided her valid driver's license and an AMEX with her name on it. She got a piece of paper that said "K" on it and the counter agent said "go take this to this girl, she'll figure it out" and so she was sent off after swiping the card, etc. Fast forward to the 14th of November, a solid 2.5 days prior to rental turn in and my wife gets a phone call saying her car is extremely late. I call a few different numbers and start doing some analysis to piece together what happened. The wrong contract was issued to my wife under a different name which was only good for 2 days. The original reservation wasn't even used from HolidayCars and I confirmed that it had not been "picked up" by one of the central call line representatives. I eventually got in touch with someone at the location after much effort the night of the 14th. He was extremely helpful and took my information down, the reservation number/rental record number/both of our phone numbers and names and said a manager would get back to us first thing in the morning. Well, fast forward to this morning, no call, no contact, or anything. I was given the direct number to the front counter and I called that 9 times with a minimum of at least a minute of ringing per call attempt with the phone company telling me that no one was going to pick up and I should hang up. I called the corporate line again to get another backdoor contact at the desk to try and get in touch with a manager. After I was transferred to the location again, someone answered the phone. They didn't identify themselves by name. Whoever they were, they said we had to bring the car in because they couldn't do anything over the phone. I was in the middle of verifying what all I needed to do in order to correct this when we do bring in the car for turn-in, and they hung up on me. I'm a pretty level headed person, but getting tossed aside as I verify everything we need to do in order to get this corrected is quite possibly the worst I've ever been treated by someone that made the mistake in the first place. I shouldn't have to put HOURS of effort in to correct a problem that either one of your franchisees or corporate locations created in the first place. As it stands, my wife is having to leave even earlier than expected to make it to the airport in order to facilitate the incompetence of the employees at this location. As I work in a secure location for the military, I have to take time off work to get this corrected. Consider this the last time I will ever consider this company for a car rental. read more

I rented a car about a week ago the pickup was good then upgraged my car as they did not have the I reserved. I was asked about insurance and I to,d them NO and gave them my insurance card. They had me sign the key pad but no $ figured should up since I assumed the price was correct I went to pick a car. SO here is the trick I returned the car and was told my total was double of what I rented the car for I asked why they said you took insurance I proceeded to argue but that was not the person to address this with. I never Signed or Initialed that I did not want the insurance there was only 1 signature. I did not checked the paper work As I assumed I said no to the insurance I called their 800 number and they stated you took the insurance and here I go again no I did not want the insurance as I have insurance . No one listens. I do not know if the agents get a percentage of when someone takes the insurance. As I read the reviews below I noticed that this was done to others. I dare you to try to get anyone on the phone. EVEN their emergency line was a recording!!! I booked a car through Southwest. I get there and it was all about the upsell. I only asked if it had satellite radio because I was alone and had a 3 hr drive to get where I wanted to go. I get to my car and load and setup everything ,,, and wha-la, no sat radio. So I asked to be switched out to another car (which they did without complaint) .....Out comes everything that I had already set up. The GPS, the computer, the chargers ,,,,everything but my sunglasses, which I realized it when I was about 1/2 hr down the highway So I got on my trusty cell phone. I called the number on the paperwork....(electronic message says to call back during business hours) Ugh!!. I just rented it, so aren't THESE business hrs?? So I call 411 to get the number to the front desk....(which turns out to be a machine) ....so I call the emergency number... (another machine??) OK, seriously, why have an EMERGENCY number if you put a stupid machine on it???? Bottom line, the $225 glasses are gone. Dollar couldn't care less but I travel a fair amount and Dollar has become the bottom on my list of choices. I paid the toll when driving through and called to inform them of that. They told me the toll was electronic. I pulled the toll up it was a coin toll. When I first got there there was a 15min wait in order to get my vehicle but it was a lot shorter than they expected. The front desk was extremely busy but they where very helpful and maintained a positive attitude the whole time. As for my vehicle I could not complain it was what I expected and in a timely manner. I arrived, on time, with a reservation, and after waiting about 30 minutes in line, I had to wait another hour for them to get a car ready. They were understaffed at the counter and were working at a snails pace.
