They also charged me $515 for a car I booked completely covered by travel points. When I called customer service, they said there wasn't anything they could do, and denied my refund. Booked through Southwest Arlines so it was just reserved and it didn't allow me to pay on the spot so when I got to the actual rental place they told me it would be 500 dollars as a deposit then it went up to 900 because I didn't use my credit card. They didn't disclose that at all and then asked me if I wanted to upgrade my car since there was going to be a winter storm . Stay away from this place! It will promise you one price and then have tons of hidden fees. On top of the hidden fees, they won't give me the car that was promised but make you to get an electric vehicle or pay extra. The staff is extremely rude and doesn't even look at you in the eye. Three weeks later I get a bill for $103 for tolls for two days of Rental. I must've gone over like four different toll areas. That would cost like three dollars where I'm from. Usually have a good experience at.Dollar at PIT, but recently, Wendell tried to charge me MORE THAN DOUBLE for a rental even looking it up using my confirmation number. He was recalcitrant and dismissive of me when I questioned the rate ($700+ for a week's rental that should have been $320), and I had to take nearly 15 mins. and look up the confirmation in email on my laptop. They do not honor pre booked rates through 3rd party, they do not disclose they charge $175 if you decline their insurance packages and the fees are all higher than stated. I was charged over $200 more than my reservation rate. Nobody told me of these extra charges, no receipt was provided (we were told the card had to be on file in the event of tolls or an accident). When you question them they say read the fine print. This is not good business on any level. So we make it to Pittsburgh with our reservation number and the attendant stated she didn't need the number she would pull reservation up by name. She not only have us an electric car with no instructions, well not exactly true, she told us to use Google to figure out how to use it. I rented a car in Pittsburgh PA. During my vacation, I went out to go somewhere and the car would not start. Called Dollar Customer Service. They sent a tow truck who checked the car and said the alternator was bad and it had drained the battery. The tow truck could not tow it to their garage as they could not fix the car. I called Dollar again and they told me to drive it back to Pittsburgh airport to get another car. This was about 35-40 miles away. I did not feel safe doing this. They did find a repair shop about 5 miles away and we did drive it there after the battery was fully charged. We could not use the car for 2 days. I asked for reimbursement for those 2 days and was told that our situation "did not fit their policies" and i would not get reimbursed. Dollar is clearly not concerned with customer safety, only money. Don't rent from them!! read more

National office is no help, saying it is Pittsburgh responsibility. If there was any damage I would be 100 percent covered but they won't pay without documentation. We rented a car through Expedia with the manager's special. I paid the inital deposit, via Expedia... so far so good.. Check in was good and we were very pleased with our car for the price quoted through Expedia. After I received my final bill, they charged me $270.00 additional, which was not the price quoted through Expedia. So far, I have wasted abt 4 hrs on hold and getting the run around trying to speak with someone abt my bill. I contacted my CC company and filed a dispute. 5 stars for Wendell. He is the man! We got screwed over royally by Alamo (who refused us a car that we prepaid for). Wendell, was the most patient and helpful person to us in a time of need. The counter was about to close for the night and he got us a car. 3.5 stars for car. It had gas, got us to where we needed to go, it wasn't fancy and was missing like a plastic handle to the chair but when we we're almost going to be stranded at the airport in the middle of the night ... we will take it. Bait and switch. When returning the car the charged us double of what was quoted online. Was able to get them to agree to original rate once I called them on it. They also sent us a bill for $66 for a $1.40 toll charge. Lastly we disputed a parking ticket that wasn't our fault and they paid the ticket and billed us for the ticket and an additional $30. Because they paid the ticket Pittsburgh Parking division refused to consider our dispute. So we are out over $150 because of these. It's funny because the guy said that they still closed at 12 midnight and I got there at 10pm, so what's the problem? But my bigger concern was that although I reserved a standard vehicle, I got a mid-size Corolla instead. Just completed a rental over the last weekend and it was a terrible experience. They charged me an additional $197 for returning the vehicle 2 hours late and additional gas fee. The tank was filled before i returned the car. The person checking the car in never left his booth and never checked the vehicle in front of me only yelling to leave the keys in the car. The rental started out pretty well. I made flight reservations and flew in the next day to help my sister who was really ill. Walked up to the counter for help upon arriving at the airport -- didn't have time to make rental car arrangements prior, and -- could have gotten a ride if necessary. The gentleman who rented the car to me couldn't have been nicer and he was very accommodating upon explaining that I may need to extend my reservation....he earned the second star....he provided the number and it went smoothly when I did in fact, need to extend. All that went well, I declined the use of the toll device -- I intended to use credit card or cash -- and off I went. Well, guess what? There is a toll road that doesn't allow payment either way...PA takes a picture of the license plate and sends a bill to the car owner. The toll was $1.50. Not really knowing what to do, I drove thru it and expected Dollar to forward the $1.50 bill on to my home address or charge it to my cc. The story turns sour from there. My sister died unexpectedly; I extended my reservation to plan her funeral; it's an upsetting time; I return home still reeling from life events; and look what came in the mail today. A lovely $131.96 dollar bill for a $1.50 toll. The super special part is when they write that I "activated the transponder device..." I did not. I didn't open it or whatever needs to be done to activate it (who knows,, because I didn't do it.). The PA Turnpike folks took a picture of the license plate...not really sure how I can get around that. I would gladly pay the $1.50 toll and some administrative fee...probably as high as $20.00 seems reasonable for Dollar's time, effort, mailing a letter etc. Or, I would have called in and authorized another charge to the +/-$463.00 bill for the 10 days I had the car, however, the primary thing that irked the hell out of me is that they wrote that "as a result you are being charged the PlatePass All-Inclusive Daiky/Weekly Rate OR a combination of both..." They chose both! So if life is happy and going smoothly I only get charged one $16.49 penalty, but because it kinda sucks right now bc my sister died, I get two penalties, so, just tack on another $82.49 for good measure. Ok, I'm being overly dramatic, but for goodness sakes, does it really cost them $131.96 to pass along a $1.50 toll charge? If so, the company has bigger issues than this review can address. It seems petty to even have a renter elect to use the toll device or not. Just tell the customers if the company is charged a toll there's a flat use rate of $5.00 plus the toll amount...they could probably stop wasting everyone's time, especially their own. Rented a car in Denver Colorado. Did everything online to reserve prior to my trip to Colorado. Got to the Denver airport found out there was no more Dollar , they went bankrupt and their location was empty and they were bought out by Hertz, shame they couldn't tell me that when I got all the confirmation papers from them , they were glad to take my money though. So now I return from Colorado to get a bill for the tolls . And they assessed a $15 service fee for each time I went through a toll booth. This was never conveyed to me at time of renting the vehicle. The dollar representative asked me if I wanted to pay for tolls in advance and I had said no. End of story. Now they send me a letter that Assesses an extra $75 for their administrative fees. Not going to pay. In fact this is one of the biggest scams I have ever heard of. USE ANYONE except Dollar -- Upon picking up my car they tricked me into insurance I didn't need. I told them I just wanted whatever was on my online reservation, nothing more. They claimed not to know anything about the specifics of my online reservation. I called customer support afterwards to explain how there was additional coverage on my plan that I had not asked for, and the customer support person opened a case number for me and told me to reference it when returning my car, so that they could adjust the billed amount. I shared the case number with the Dollar representative at the airport desk and even called the support person in front of her, on speaker, to confirm that the case number was legitimate. She declined to honor the case number and told me I had to pay for what was originally stated on my rental agreement. I called the branch manager over as well and she refused to honor the case number as well. I then issued a complaint online with Dollar in two separate places; the online portal said someone would call me within 72 hours to discuss my complaint. I still haven't heard from anyone in more than 3 weeks. DO NOT use Dollar. Go to literally any other car rental company. read more

We rented a car through Dollar this past week and it was a horrific experience. The first car they gave us smelled so terribly like cigarette smoke that they had to give us a new one. The car they gave us ended up having so many issues it caused an insane amount of undue stress on our vacation. The car battery died each time we turned it off and we were unable to make it from point a to point b at any time during our trip without having to get our car jumped. The first time was on our way to my sisters wedding, which we would have missed if a random stranger had not driven by to jump us. We waited on hold for hours to reach customer service for roadside assistance and had no success until Saturday when our car would not start once again. The last day when we needed to head to the airport, the car would once again not start and a tow truck was 60-90 minutes out, leaving us stranded with our two young children unable to get to the airport. The car was eventually towed and WE had to make other arrangements to get our family safely to Pittsburgh. The manager at Dollar could have cared less and didn't want to spare her time to listen to the nightmare that we went through, in fact she originally walked away when she was told we wanted to speak to the manager, and had to be called back to the counter (per customer service, this was our only hope for any sort of refund or assurance). No apologies, no offer refund refund or discount, no follow up, no empathy for us who remained courteous and calm as we were made later and later to our flight. Complete nightmare. Charged $145 for Refueling and $400 Smoking charge. Luckily I took a picture of the gauges when dropping off so I was able to get the gas charge reversed. Dollar/Hertz is refusing to reverse the smoking charge and I have never smoked in my life and no one else was in the vehicle. So I proved they lied about the refueling charge but they are still charging the smoking charge. If you are cheap and use this company you will end up paying way more in the long run as they will apply fraudulent charges after you are done and there is nothing you can do about it. Employees were courteous, got the car quickly (via dollar express membership - avoiding all of the usual upsells), and had no trouble with the return (having kept/shown my sub-10 mile gas receipt), but despite having reserved a compact, I was provided a tiny chevy spark sub-compact (the image next to the "economy" class on their website). Otherwise, the car was clean and had XM, but assigning something as tiny as a chevy spark to someone who made a compact reservation is borderline fraud in my book. I made a reservation for a car rental at the airport with dollar rent a car. I had recently lost my drivers license card, and had requested a new one be sent to me. I called ahead to dollar and told them that I could show them the confirmation of the DL replacement request (which stated the DL was currently active), as well as a copy of my DL saved on my phone. The customer service agent talked to the manager and confirmed that I would be ok to rent the car with these documents, but when I got to the airport (after paying for a $75 uber ride) the guy at the Dollar desk told me immediately that I could not pick up the car without the actual license card in-hand. I showed him the proof and told him that I had confirmed ahead of time that this would be accepted, but he didnt care. I basically just blew about $150 going to and from the airport, despite confirming ahead of time that I would have no issues. Dollar Rent a Car owes me $150. read more

After being turned away from all other car rental companies (they didn't have the car I wanted) I finally decided to give Dollar Car Rentals a try. Customer service is outstanding! The lady that helped me at the front desk wad amazing and even Chuck who met me with the car keys was very courteous. I was even given a brand new van for my rental. I see from other reviews that I should NEVER HAVE RENTED from Dollar Car Rental! I am getting ready to pay another $70 fee for small claims court. They are so stupid that I am sure they will pay at least $700 to have a lawyer dispute the $300 claim. NOT ONCE, did they ever call me to tell me that they were going to charge my credit card $300+ because I kept the car past the return time (another day charge) and I didn't return the keys! I disputed this with Capital One and they opened up an investigation. To my dismay, Capital One sided with them when all they did was submit the contract. I sent this letter to capital one.... Capital One Transaction Support Center: If you have sent me everything the company sent you regarding the transaction, then I am very disappointed regarding the depth of this investigation and the willingness for Capital One to overrule my appeal. DOLLAR RENT A CAR did not provide and explanation of the true and accurate facts of what happened. If they continue to pursue this allegation, there will be a demand in small claims court to make them prove this and if you continue to support this transaction based on unsubstantiated facts and not considering the accurate facts that I am presenting to you, then I will seek all damages allotted to me b y law. I am permitted, in Pennsylvania to present my case here, because DOLLAR RENT A CAR operates its business in this state. Issue 1. "Per the signed rental, cardholder is responsible for the charges not covered by the voucher". I have enclosed our flight itinerary showing our that our flight left at 6:05am. It would have been impossible for us to return the car at erroneous claim of 09:27am. When we picked up the car, we inquired of the attendant how to return it at 5am the next morning. He told us to return it to the rental area designated for DOLLAR RENT A CAR and leave the keys. My 18-year-old daughter will attest to this, as well as the fact, that there were several people ahead of us returning their cars in the same manner. Therefore, ALL AND EVERY, charge associated with an extra day should NOT BE HONORED. As a matter of fact, this would be a fraudulent claim submitted to your company for payment. I request that you are not a party to this deception. I am also providing information showing the time, date, and amount of gas that was put into the car to validate the time of its return. Issue 2. They do not even address this in the appeal to Capital One. It was never addressed to me until I inquired why there was additional charges on my account. It was only after I disputed this charge that we were ridiculously accused of not returning the keys. There was never a call or correspondence regarding the "missing keys", did we accidently take them and could we mail them back-nothing. How do you think the car was parked in the DOLLAR RENT A CAR right behind the previous cars without the keys? Again, my 18-year-old daughter, can attest to the fact that I left the keys in the car as instructed. Please keep in mind, that we were told to pick the car we wanted and the keys were in the car. We returned the car with the keys as we found them. Please include logic in this reversal of our dispute. What purpose would we have to take the keys to the car? How would it benefit us? I have rented several cars in the last several years and have NEVER had any damage or loss of property claims. I have rented cars since this rental and again...there have been no claims of property loss or damage. My previous actions should be taken into consideration as DOLLAR RENT A CAR is demanding that I PROVE A NEGATIVE. I can't prove I didn't take the keys, I can only present logical arguments about why I would not take the keys. I can easily say, their attendant lost, misplaced, stole the keys. However, the burden of proof is on the accuser, not someone who rented in good faith. I respectfully request that Capital One honor it's promise to protect their members. I did nothing wrong in the renting of this car. I honored the agreement and DOLLAR RENT A CAR has not given any proof that I did not. They ONLY PRESENTED you with the agreement. That is the only thing they gave you. I would submit that they have video cameras in the return area. If the keys were missing, they would have tagged those videos and I challenge them to submit them. I could request for the toll charges and times to be itemized and it would show we returned the car on time. This is a shameless attempt to extort the customer. I had no issues at a Dollar at PIT while renting a car from 12/10 through 12/17. Actually I returned it early, on 12/16 early evening, due to a 6 a.m. flight on 12/17. I did not want to leave it without checking it in with someone there. I had a 4WD Cherokee for the week for $237 final price. Car had Sirius and was very well-appointed. Prices were higher as I checked a few times in the two months between making the reservation and picking up the car, so I recommend booking as early as possible. Everyone was cordial and professional. I ended up driving to NY and Phila and back to Pittsburgh, and I encountered lots of toll roads and bridges. I did not get EZ pass at $15 a day, paying cash each time with one exception -- crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge eastbound. There was no cash option, period, and I got the bill from Dollar after 17 days. It charged me the toll ($4.75) plus a $15 admin fee. Not as bad as what I'd seen others say they had to pay in the same situation, which was $30-35. Unfortunately I've heard murmurs of more toll areas going completely cashless in the future, so check each road or crossing beforehand. read more

I rented a car with Dollar Rental in the Pittsburgh airport. They didn't mention that if I used the toll road I would be charged a 15 dollar "administrative fee" every time I went through a toll until I got the keys. Mind you the toll is only $1.80. going through six tolls (which is the way I needed to go) would have cost $90.00 for no good reason. Lucky I grew up in the area and knew back ways around the toll road (adding an extra 45min to the trip). I will NEVER rent from Dollar again. I rented a car in Pittsburgh and went through several cashless tolls in WV. I called Dollar when I learned this and they said just to opt in to their toll paying service when I return the vehicle. When I return the vehicle, I learn that that option is not applicable to my vehicle. I have tried calling customer service and all I get is "we will wait and see what happens". What is going to happen is a $15.00 administrative fee capped at $90 plus the tolls. Even the WV toll authority said to let them know that I wish to handle the charges. Dollar will not allow me to do that. Thus I am beating them to the punch and changing my credit card number before they can charge my card. This place is really something else. read more

I was overcharged approximately $250 by these people. When I called their customer service and complained, they promised to issue a refund FOR THEIR MISTAKE. A month later - no refund. So I had to call AGAIN and speak to another series of consistently less-than-helpful customer service people who said that I had to call back AGAIN and ask for a different department and then hung up on me. While driving in Florida, accidentally traveled on a toll road where tolls would occur every mile or so.. received 8 toll totaling 5.40 and was charged a whopping 9.99 for each tool by dollar totaling almost 80.00 !!! I should have read the yelp reviews first. Never again. I called to speak to a live person instead of reserving online, just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Needed a car for my 22 year old son and his wife to take for a few days to visit her parents. I was very clear about the situation, and was told that it would only be a $13.77 additional rate per day for the young driver. That is all. There was never a mention of another $29 per day fee on top of that. Apparently there is one fee for the "additional" driver and another fee for the "young" driver...both the same person.
