Nothing bad about Dollar Tree off Gilman St. I actually gotten help with a question on a product. They surely were helpful on why Alka 65 Alkaline Water is never in stock anymore. The store is huge! I knew based on the location of the store that I was probably not gonna be one of the better dollar stores but it's disgusting. I feel like I need a tetanus shot after going in. It was filthy the floors I mean I went there for something specific they didn't have it and the cashier was telling me.it doesn't show on the website. For one of the smallest Dollar Trees I've been in and what a disappointing mess. There are untended, open boxes blocking aisles ready for customers to trip over. Some shelves are completely empty and others full of misplaced items. There seems to be an attempt at organizing the aisles with signage, but oh well, maybe a staff shortage. I couldn't find what I was looking for, and the only staff I saw were cashiers. The parking lot makes it easy to stop and shop, but what a waste of time searching for items; however, if you need candles, party goods or some cheap craft items, come work your way through here. read more

The people are always very nice but there are so few of them that the clerks who are there can't be of much service. Lately, I've seen one checker, a manager, and no one else to talk to or ask questions. Check out lines are very long. The manager tells customers they need to learn to be patient. Seriously?? Not long ago the store was reorganized so that things which had been in familiar locations were moved to other sections of the store. Very confusing. The inventory of items seems very limited. I used to go to the store to buy things like: plastic storage bags of different sizes, snack, sandwich, quart, gallon; manila envelopes --large and small, letter envelopes; toothpaste, toothbrushes, antibiotic cream, hand soap, pretty colored small gift bags, relish, cleanser and bleach. The last three times I went to the store they had none of these things. The store had cars, wrapping paper, seasonal decorations, some frozen foods, paper products and lots of candy and junk food. People used to depend on this store. It's too bad it is doing so poorly. It's messy, almost empty, and has a very long checkout line. Sadly, the store is not worth the trouble. Too bad. I give this store 2 stars only because they have some deals available only in the general area. Really I feel it would be a goes between 1 and 2. Half the stock of other dollar trees are missing and I feel like I'm in a post apocalyptic Fallout game as a lot of the shelves are picked clean. No stock and no one stocking. Dollar Tree stores look terrible. Even when they open, the carpet already looks dirty and it's only a short while before things are strewn haplessly throughout the store. But this store did what I wanted and that's why they have three stars. 1) I asked someone for some bleach and they knew what it was and where it was located. And the salesperson asked me to follow her so that she could show it to me. 2) They actually had it in stock. So I pulled out $1 and change and paid for it. This is one of the easiest transactions I've ever had at a Dollar store and I thank them for that. First for hiring someone who was smart enough to care where things were located and nice enough to show me where it was. It felt great! read more

Although the selection and stock is ok, some products are clearly sitting in the back in unopened boxes. There's no reason not to have AAA batteries for example, and no reason to not stock baby shampoo, etc, canned milk, etc. The biggest issue with not making this store a better choice is not putting out smaller baskets to shop with. Those full size carts are just not suitable for smaller amounts of items. Ridiculous. Someone at the store made some silly excuses for this very unprofessional problem here. I have shopped at Dollar Tree stores in various locations for a while now. Never ever, not even one time have I ever seen any of these being *stolen*...absurd..utterly absurd. The SMART thing to do is get a SECURITY GUARD to collect them at the conclusion of the sale. Common sense. I've never seen one out on the street either. Save the b.s. Larger carts do get taken if the wheels aren't programmed for staying in the parking lot. But never once have I seen a D.T. basket on the street. Never. Not even once. I shop at this dollar tree because of lack of options. I used to love the 99 store but well we know what happened there. Early on it was fine but in the last year or so it has become a tedious errand. The shelves are never full, they never have items that other stores carry (last year I checked 8 times for a Halloween themed snow globe that was never shelved) along with many items that just sat in boxes until the holiday was over. There are lots of items I won't pay top dollar for but this store is so awful that I find myself at target or similar more and more. Today I went in for a few cleaning supplies and the top came off one of the cleansers spilling on the floor. I told a staff member, he acknowledged it and then left it. I saw an older woman waking near it so I found a wet floor sign myself and placed it over the spill. 20 mins later as I was leaving, it was still there. Needed party supplies for New Year's, so stopped into this Dollar Tree last week (one time event decorations that will be thrown away quickly anyway are kind of the perfect items to buy from a dollar store). The store was pretty clean (and I mean that both for a dollar store and just as a regular store) and organized. Not only was it easy to find decorations for my New Year's Eve party but ended up buying other things too. While browsing the store I found some nice Bed Bath and Beyond plates and quickly snatched them up. I was surprised they had some BBnB stuff (maybe Dollar Tree bought some of their supplies as they went out of business?). I do agree with another review though though with the lack of hand baskets/small shopping carts that you can carry is really annoying (every store has hand baskets so not sure why this place doesn't). When checking out my items, the cashier was friendly and rang up my items promptly and accurately. I'm so glad this Dollar Tree is still in business. I used to go to the Downtown location often, but since it closed down, I go to this one now only once or twice a year (mainly for party supplies). This is pretty much the last good dollar store in Berkeley, so save some money and get some of your supplies here while it's still around. read more

I want to give this Dollar Tree a better review, but I can't. This is not a reflection on the employees that work at the store for the most part. I've always had good experience with the employees. The ones I have interacted with have usually been very friendly and professional. My issue is with the selection and cleanliness. This is not the biggest Dollar Tree I've ever been in, but it is in a great location with ample parking & wheelchair accessible. Whenever I go to the store, I'm always hopeful. They will have plenty in stock in the past. They have been much better stocked in the past but lately when I have gone in the shelves are empty or nearly empty. The store does not look sanitary and many parts of the store look like they have been neglected for years, the store makes no effort to inform customers with any posted notifications on why supplies are so limited or nonexistent. When there are items in stock they're often in great disarray. I have worked retail. I know how hard it is to keep shelves and hanging items neat and in order which is reflection that the store is woefully understaffed. I hope this store improves greatly. It has potential. It just hasn't met that potential yet. read more

Whenever I shop there, I always look for Mae because I know I will get the best service. She is always kind, polite, patient, and professional. Whenever she is checking, I know that her line moves smoothly. Mae knows all the products and where everything is in the store. She is a very valuable employee and I have had the pleasure of seeing her excellent work at three stores...one store in Richmond and two in Berkeley. She has been the same friendly cashier who always gives service with a smile. It is great that a person is always there who remembers the regular customers and makes them feel welcome to shop at the Dollar Tree each time one shops there. When she is the most outstanding is during the holidays or when it is so busy and she keeps those lines flowing with a friendly smile. The customer is always right with Mae and today she was stocking and I saw a customer bump her with their shopping cart. Mae just said "ow,that hurt" softly and the customer apologized immediately. Horrible experience with one of the cashiers today 8/3/19. I tried to use manufacture coupons at the location but the lady didn't even look at it and immediately said "no!" loudly. She was also very rude. I called Dollar Tree customer service and they said I should be able to use at maximum of 4 coupons, which was what I used. Not going to come back! read more

This location tends to be less busy than others around the area and has its own private parking lot, but does also have a large homeless population that chooses to hang around inside and outside the building. You can find just about anything you need here from home goods to frozen meals, but the only problem is that they don't do a very good job stocking the shelves or facing the products, almost every aisle has at least 1-2 shelves or racks that are bare. read more

Dollar Tree. The Mother was in the market for a certain hair accessory called the butterfly clip. Dollar Tree came as a recommendation by a mutual acquaintance of ours. We were more than delighted that Dollar Tree has the elusive butterfly clips we were looking for--and for a dollar. Much to my delight, they also had hair bands for a dollar too. I held off on getting those as I needed to think about which ones to buy. I came back about a week later for more hair bands. I was able to find 100 hairbands for a dollar--that works out to a penny each! There were thicker hairbands for a dollar too--but those came in a set of a much lower amount of hairbands, which was a set of 50 bands--which came out to twenty cents per hairband. I was able to get a pocket/purse-sized hairbrush in a black and blue comb for a dollar too! I use it all the time--it also came with a set of three hairbands. So for four pieces, that is twenty-five cents each. I can see us coming back for essentials such as flip flop slippers, notebooks, erasers, pencils, and other stuff for college and home. Now, a lot of the time you're going to get some attitude at the Dollar Tree. I get it. But after my last few trips here, I've had it with this one. I don't know if it's because I was wearing a mask and you can't tell I'm smiling but the cashier I had the misfortune of dealing with was extremely rude after being very sweet to the ladies before me who had lots of stuff and took forever. I was patient as can be. So it's my turn, I greeted her with a hello-nothing back. She asked if I wanted a bag-I said "yes, ma'am"(I'm military-I respect my elders and say ma'am and sir.) She says "EXCUSE ME?" in a very aggressive tone. I said a little louder "Yes ma'am." I give her my money and she has runs out of one's. This lady acted like it was my fault she ran out my of change lol. Then she wanted me to stand at the end by the bags to wait for my money for some reason. But instead of using her words like a grown adult in CUSTOMER SERVICE, she snapped and pointed down like you would do to a dog that you wanted to sit down and obey and then gave me the nastiest look like I did something wrong-I absolutely didn't. I said "have a good day" a little briskly after all that, I admit, and took my change. What the hell? I used to just take this treatment and roll with it but not anymore. I got her name and I've written corporate. Which I'm sure nothing will come of. I'm tired of getting treated like garbage for no reason when I'm just trying to feed my child or buy him a little toy. I'm a human being deserving of respect, and I know that the people that work there are too. I know they deal with all kinds of crazy stuff at times but stop taking it out on people who do nothing to you or you just don't like something about the way they look. This particular location is the smallest DT that I've visited, but still liked it. I love Dollar Tree more than any other store in my life! I know how pathetic that sounds, but that doesn't make it any less true! Great selection of basic food items, snacks, and candy. They have MANY kinds of great tasting liquorice like Orange Crush, Grape Crush, Watermelon, and Green Apple. They even have frozen foods!! Dollar Tree is also great for last-minute kitchen supplies, school supplies, and random knick-knacks that you didn't realize that you've needed all of your life until you saw them sitting there on the shelf waiting for you. Had never shopped at a Dollar Tree or similar stores. I happened to go in because I was going to shop at Wholefoods very nearby. Really surprised by the quality of selection. Bought gift bags that were $6.95 elsewhere. Excellent range of gift and party ware. Terrific prices on brand names for pens, pencils, stationery, school supplies, paper goods, brand name liquid soap, Food storage containers and more. Besides the gift bag, I bought rubber dish gloves, parchment paper, a china bowl and wood backscratcher. Will be back for papergoods. There are items here that if you walk to the nearby Office Depot, Walgreens or Wholefoods, you would spend 4x as much. Note, expect that service won't be terrific and not everything will be laid out nicely. I wouldn't expect that for the price. Also and more importantly, esp in the evenings, esp if you are on your own, be aware in the parking lot and approaching and exiting the store. read more

I prefer this Dollar Tree to the Downtown Berkeley one. Huge parking lot with tons of free parking. The store is really clean and organized - some Dollar Trees have crap in the aisles and things are thrown all over. Not the case here. Nice wide aisles. I have come to this location many times before when I lived in the area and more specifically when they just opened. There use to be someone who greeted, the shelves were always stocked and the staff was generally friendly. Today I went in to get birthday balls for my son and a table cloth. The party section was very low in stock, when I went to pay and inform Nakia that I needed balloons she stated that there was only Mickey or Minnie birthday balloons. So I asked why this was, where they just not inflating any. She said no, we just don't have any. I am HIGHLY disappointed with this location. I drove out specifically to this location knowing they have some of the best balloons and great staff. What a disappointment, I will make sure to NEVER EVER come to this location again.
