Dolly's Fish Market is nothing more than a tourist destination with very average food and substandard service. The building houses a raw fish market and a restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. Indoor has one host and outdoors has another for seating and the servers meander around with no memory of what they were supposed to be doing. We were seated outside because it was a beautiful day. We expected a nice meal of fish and chips until the 1st 25 person tour showed up and started taking all the chairs. We were handed menus and the server walked away to go service the tour group. They were given a mini soup cup, half a biscuit and they moved along pretty quickly. Our order was taken and then shortly after it was put on the table with no eating utensils or condiments. We asked for both and got silverware. We asked for malt vinegar and it was brought to another table and we got nothing. The food was very greasy and basic because it had no seasoning on the fish or the chips. The cole slaw was good, the tartar sauce was not fresh made and it was a tiny portions. The chips (fries) were cooked well but needed salt and we got none. I would not return here again nor would I go to their food truck that is at the port area. Visited bc we heard it was a must-go however the service was minimal at best. They were busy which I understood but after we were sat down (~45 min wait), they took our drink/food and orders (all waters) and we didn't receive them for at least 30 minutes. The table that got sat right after us received their drinks within 10 minutes and they ordered specialty drinks. When we finally got our food, the chowder was cold. We asked to get it reheated it came back the a tad warmer. We then asked if it was supposed to come out room temperature, they said that because it was a hot day it comes out cool..? The dishes that stood out were the shrimp and the halibut bites. The shrimp were seasoned beautifully and tasted fresh. The halibut bites were also delicious. The steamed clams tasted fresh and the downside was the price to size ratio. The clams were smaller than anticipated. The fried calamari tasted like any other fried calamari you could get anywhere else. A few notes are they do have gluten-free batter for fried dishes which is a plus for those with celiac. One important thing is for those with allergies, I would be hesitant to visit as the manager wasn't aware of how the dishes were prepared. When asked how the clams were prepared, the manager did not know if they were steamed or even cooked with garlic; when it was served, she came to check if they were steamed... We were heading back to ship to eat after tirelessly looking for somewhere. The customs guard suggested Dolly's! We had walked right by it and didn't even notice you could eat there. We thought it was only shipping fish home. We went in and the staff were so nice and helpful! So willing to serve us and answer any questions we had. We opted to sit outside (it was a nice day), plenty of seating. The fish!!! Omg so absolutely delicious! We are so glad we made the walk again to try it because it did not disappoint! We just had lunch there yesterday. I had the King Crab legs and we tried the only clam chowder they have, even though they have 3 different ones on the menu. The King Crab legs was delicious. However we had to ask for napkins and silverware. I had been trying to crack and eat my crab for about five minutes when we finally got silverware. The time it took for the server to get to us and finally take our order was about 20 minutes. They were severely understaffed and I just can't understand why.? you had two big ships coming in you had to know that you had several thousand people coming off the ships? I was very disappointed in the service, horrendous, and embarrassing. I was in the service industry for over 20 years. And I understand that Dolly's Fish House is no Ritz Carlton.... I want to start with Prince Rupert is a very beautiful, green, flowery, seaside, small town. Our cruise was redirected here instead of Victoria. I don't think the restaurant was prepared for as many visitors as they got that day. The wait was long to be seated and the wait for the food was even longer! I even overheard the employees arguing with each other. The biscuit was amazing, I would pass on the chowder but the crab legs were good. I really didn't get to taste the poutine. Some of the best fish and chips we've ever had ...we got the combo halibut and cod with chips...both types of fish were extremely fresh..doesn't hurt that the fishing boat docks are literally right there...they were seasoned and fried perfectly..not greasy but light and crispy ..we ordered another couple pieces since we were enjoying it so much.The fries were also fried perfectly...crispy outside and soft inside. Absolutely the worst staff and service. When I first got there I went to a table to ask if I can sit down, the girl said yes. Then someone else came up and said I'm sorry you cannot sit there. That person is just a dishwasher and she doesn't know what she's talking about. Ok. So. Waiting another 10 minutes or so to be seated. Finally sat our group of 8. We waited 25 minutes for someone to come ask us if we wanted anything to drink. We ordered 2 waters, 4 Italian sodas and 2 alcohol drinks along with food. The drinks were watered down and tasteless. We were never told that the wait could take a while or anything. Our drinks came out about 10 minutes later. Which was fine we were enjoying our company and the scenery and our experience in Prince Rupert. We realized that an hour and 25 minutes had gone by and none of our food had come yet. And now we're realizing that we are about 45 minutes away from having to be back on the ship. A couple of us went inside to go find out what was going on with our order and we were told that they hadn't even started it yet. This is absolutely beyond ridiculous. Just sit and wait for an hour and 25 minutes and they don't even have our food order going yet. We told them to cancel because we wouldn't have time to eat it and enjoy it. Everyone around us was saying that they should comp our drinks because they all saw how long we were waiting. We asked four times to two different staff members to speak to a manager, and none of them seemed to be able to answer our question and said that she wasn't there. Finally out of no where, the lady came out who claimed she was the owner and said that she wasn't going to do anything to help us and that we just need to pay for our bill. We tried to explain to her our experience, and she said, she didn't care and that yes this is how she handles owning her restaurant. We explained why we felt a few drinks should have been comped as good gesture, she was incredibly rude and in my husbands face and said, "she did not care" and not once apologized for their lack of customer service. It's a shame this is how they treat their tourism and their travelers. They definitely did not care about us, especially since we are not locals. Dolly's was highly recommended from our trolly tour guide so we walked over there with high hope and expectations. As a travel agent, and having many clients traveling to this port, I definitely will not be recommending this place to anybody. There was only one ship in this port today. So if you were anticipating a busy crowd, maybe the owner should've staffed accordingly. Communication is definitely key, and it would have been nice if someone literally anyone that worked there explained to us that the wait was going to take over an hour and a half. Not one time did anybody come and ask us if we wanted refills or more water or anything. There are so many other options of restaurants in this area so I would definitely try something else if you're ever in this port. read more

Food is ok but nothing special. Prices are on par for the small ocean communities of the northwest (i.e. not cheap because everything is really expensive up here). But you won't be ripped off price wise, especially if you are paying with US$ and there's a favorable exchange. The place is clean and in good repair and the staff are friendly. However, service is slowwwww. Plan a long time for your meal. The fried halibut bites were tasty and the fish fresh. The bannock taco is an uncommon dish although southwest US folks might recognize it as a Canadian First Nation version of Navajo tacos or Indian fry bread tacos. The clam chowder is very leek forward and pretty good. I wasn't a fan of the anemic red chowder. The cheese biscuits were underbaked and dry. I hadn't been to dollys in along time as the last experience was horrendous and the food had to be thrown out. But 8 months later with company here for seafest we decided to try it once again and the experience was worse. No one in the restaurant and it took us 45 minutes to get order. Appies and Main came together. One person ordered a fresh crab and it was not fresh. Had to be sent back. The fishy smell and taste made the crab inedible. The second crab came with a sauce that was supposed to be on another dish. The last dish the alleged poke bowl is a misunderstanding standing. Day old rice 3 inch chunks of yam and and thick slices of cucumber. As per tuna it was not fresh. The colour was a bit off and the extra lime juice was meant to cover it. However, I did enjoy the Dungeness crab and would like to come back again to try out other seafood dishes. Here's what I ordered: 1. Oven Roasted Garlic Dungeness Crab (Half): Absolutely amazing! I really wanted clam chowder and I originally wanted to try Smiles. Smiles was closed so I ended up going to Dolly's. Dolly's was ok. I ordered the clam chowder. It was not creamy. It was very watery but it did have a very strong butter taste. Not the creamy taste. Also it didn't have a lot of clams either. The chowder was lacking the seafood taste or smell in it. I have had better clam chowder in San Fran and Oregon where their clam chowders are known to be at the top. I can't really compare Dolly's to those places. But any restaurants in Vancouver would out beat Dolly's easily. I would say someone from PR would give this place 4 stars. But I would say they are ok. Chowder is one of the hardest thing to make that takes a lot of time. In order, to get the flavor out it takes a lot of time to cook it. Yes it does uses a lot of butter. To start, we ordered our food. I ordered the halibut. They were out of halibut. Ok, how much is the lobster. No lobster. What about the rockfish? Yes they have rockfish. Fine, I'd like to start with a cup of clam chowder and a cheese biscuit and I'll have the rockfish. Hubby was easy, he ordered a whole crab dinner. We weren't offered drink menus but had overheard they had Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. We decided to get a bottle of Chardonnay and hubby got a beer to start. When our drinks were delivered we were given a beer with a mug (not poured). Two wine glasses and an unopened bottle of wine. I guess since it was a screw top that step was deemed unnecessary. Our food was finally delivered and we got everything at once. When I asked the girl why my soup wasn't brought as an appetizer? She just smiled and shrugged. She started to walk away and we had to ask for silverware, as we hadn't been given any. She brings back silverware and my husband had to ask her for butter for the crab. She goes and gets that. When she returned, hubby asked her what happened to the garlic and honey that is supposed to be on the crab (per the menu description). She said she'd go ask. We never saw her again! Not once did she come back and neither did our original server (who took our order). I will say the chowder was pretty good. Biscuit was ok. The crab was really good. The rockfish was not good at all. First of all it was breaded, which is not in the description on the menu. Also, it was described as "herbed" but was incredibly bland. Salt would have helped but there was none on the table and severs weren't anywhere to be seen. The fries were decent but again could have used salt and maybe some ketchup, but you guessed it! No ketchup on the table. And no servers to be seen. The wine was just bad. It tasted more like grapefruit juice than an unoaked Chardonnay. We drank it because we paid for the whole bottle, and there was no ordering anything else with the lack of server presence. Seriously, if you have any palate for wine, avoid this one. Also, please understand that the restaurant was staffed! I went inside to use the restroom and five employees were seated at a table inside laughing and joking having the time of their life. (I could tell they were employees by the shirts they were wearing). The restroom was a mess! (Big surprise!). Trash overflowing, TP roll holder was broken and the broken piece just sitting there on the sink. Gross. (I thought about taking a picture but didn't want to expose you all to that.) We were seated outside and two separate tables left and no one bussed them. So every time a slight breeze blew, garbage, cans, napkins etc flew off the table and littered the patio. If you're on a cruise ship, you've probably realized there's not much to do in Prince Rupert at this point. You've decided to eat something anyways since you're in town, and you wander down to Dolly's Seafood Restaurant near the port because it does smell good from the street and the place is packed, which is usually a good sign. You've forgotten that there's not much to do in Prince Rupert and fail to realize that the place is packed because everyone from the cruise ship had the same idea and went there. The food we did have, or at least the things we ordered that came out, was just ok. The smoked salmon portion was pretty small and was served with pressed hamburger bun bottoms instead of crackers. It was smokey, but the texture was uneven; parts of each piece were dry, and parts were soggy. The clam chowder was pretty runny with very small potatoes and some clams... not terrible, but nothing special. Our shrimp never came out, so I can't comment on that. Several other tables also had items never arrive. The service was the real problem. The restaurant has zero organization. It seems that everyone is running around doing everything, which means that nothing gets done. There's no real place to check in, so servers are dodging around people in the check-in line while some people are trying to check in and some pay at the same station (which is in the middle of the restaurant). There was no order to who got food when... we waited 45 minutes to get our three... er, um.. two appetizers. People who came in well after us were served before us... with full meals, not appetizers, and people who were there when we arrived still had not yet been served. And good luck getting a refill on your water. We had two small cups of water in our 65+ minutes in the restaurant. The staff were very kind, but most were late teens/early 20s and seemed to have no direction or management. They were just doing whatever they could in the moment... putting out one problem after another without ever moving anything forward in the restaurant. Given the closure of many small businesses in town, this was practically one of the few left to taste fresh fish. Since Prince Rupert is known as the Halibut Capital of BC, of course I had to have some seafood during my stay. I ordered a clam chowder (tasty but not earth shattering), a crab mac and cheese (duh) and one piece of battered halibut. I enjoyed the mac and cheese the most. My favourite fish and chip shop is still Pajo's in Steveston, which is great since I can eat it any time I'm craving it instead of flying to Rupert for it. The service was good. The two servers checked several times to inquire about my meal and they even provided a glass of ice so that I could drink the iced tea I smuggled in. I went shortly after they opened, so there was no wait, but I noticed that it started to fill up by noon. And waited and waited some more. They took our order and never saw anyone again for an hour. By the time the 3rd person in our party got up to ask someone where our food was it had been an hour and 20 min. Even the table of locals sitting next to us told the staff it should be comped for us waiting so long and patiently but they said nope and made us pay. When we asked to speak to the manager, both employees said there was no manager there but 5 min later a woman came out saying "I'm the boss, what's the problem?" After very politely trying to explain to her what was happening and that we had to be back on the ship shortly she said "Okay, well we're busy and there's nothing we can do" She was so rude and didn't even try to apologize or seem upset. Took another 20 to place an order and had to ask if we could get our order in. We had to ask for drinks and waited 2+ hours on our food. The worst part that is infuriating. They gave us our $140 bill. We asked if they took American money and they replied, "Oh, of course!" In the nicest tone that they'd been all day. We asked what the exchange rate was and they said 1-1. We didn't have internet service on our phones so we couldn't verify. FALSE. SO GLAD WE PAID WITH OUR CARD because it was only $104 American dollars. We had 3 different servers during our meal & despite confirming with all three that I required gluten free due to celiac disease, I still did not get gluten free food. I found this out because the table next to us ordered the exact same thing as I did (due to a gluten allergy) & they received different food as well as I ended up violently ill a few hours after eating there. On top of that, no server ever came by to ask us how things were, I ordered a second drink that I never received, & they charged us for an appetizer that we didn't receive because they were sold out. I sat down pretty quickly and it was just me but the menu i was handed was completely different from the menu posted at the door. I was told this is the "Cruise Ship Menu" - ??? I wanted to get oysters and blackened halibut but this is not offered to cruises. They had dungeness crab but in San Francisco I can buy it for a third of the price. I left and ate on the ship. My wife and I stopped here for a late lunch and OMG were we impressed. Jenn had the crab Mac and cheese and I had the 2 piece halibut and chips. The Mac and cheese was creamy, cheesy, with huge chunks of real crab. Her only regret is as that she ordered the lunch size and after tasting wishes she had the full size. Note that she was full, she could just keep eating it was so good :) The halibut and chips were THE BEST FISH & CHIPS I've ever had, and I've had them all over Vancouver island and Vancouver. The fish is so fresh and flakey, and the batter is just right. The fries are hand cut and done perfectly. The coleslaw is also very good, creamy and slightly vinegary which is how I like it. Although a manger was to call me back from the restaurant after our dine-in experience, no one has called. I have called multiple times, stopped in, and emailed. I stayed calm and laidback during our Saturday afternoon on August 8th. The meal was amazing. Sitting in bleach with my new top that I literally bought the day before was not amazing, at all. When I realized what had happened shortly after our lunch, I called and was met with understanding and quick action. The person I spoke to said that as soon as I'd called and explained, she and the other employee working had dumped out the bleach/water solution provided to them in spray bottles to clean the tables, chairs, and menus (& replaces with something that wouldn't cause more bleaching of customer clothing etc). Yay for me, hero of the month for saving the restaurant many many complaints from customers with ruined clothing! What I envisioned was a call (and for decency's sake, compensation in the amount I spent on my top). I stopped by the restaurant to show the staff the damage on our way home. The person working assured me that a manager would contact me soon and showed me my phone number written and up on their board so it wouldn't be missed (or dismissed). I've been missed and dismissed. I won't be back. I actually cannot believe this restaurant can have such a good reputation. It must be solely based on the servers (who are amazing). The manager(s) leave a lot to be desired... or at least I think so, considering I've never spoken to one. The other issue we had is: no-masks on staff while we were served. Since our province has opened up, we have been to many restaurants. All of them have servers with face shields of some sort. We always wear masks to and from our table. Although there may not be any outbreaks in Prince Rupert at this time, Haida Gwaii is very close and essential service workers often go through Prince Rupert. Excellent fish and chips!! Liked them so much we ordered a second piece!! We also picked up salmon jerky in 2 flavors. Waitress did a great job bringing us a variety of canned beer options to the table so we could find ones we liked (we are dark beer people). Definately would come here again!! read more

A poor choice for our supper. The wait staff seemed to be struggling to talk with each other. One person told us to grab a table, another told us it would be a wait (we had no problem waiting). We did choose an empty table behind a wall, but didn't have anyone offer to serve us there. We changed to a more visible table, and were greeted there. We were asked what we wanted to drink, but not offered a drink menu, so stuck to water. The server didn't know the menu that well so we needed to change our order twice. We ordered appetizers which arrived at the same time as our meals. I had the seafood platter. The cold-smoked salmon was really nice, but the breaded fish was bland, and clearly cooked from frozen. My son had the seafood Alfredo, and he was happy with it; it was presented nicely and was a generous serving. My husband had the blackened halibut, it tasted bland as well. We started with the rockfish bites, which were tasty, and the crab cakes which looked nice, but didn't taste great. Overall, I think the promise of fresh fish and seafood was under delivered. Anyone seeking a tasty meal could likely do better than Dolly's, and could definitely get better value for their dollar, without going too far. read more
