OPA sushi Bar is a quaint sushi restaurant at the top of the stairs of the wooden building above some shops. There is inside and outside seating when the weather is nice. I stopped in because I live sushi but more than that, I had to try the fresh local coho and sockeye salmon nigiri. It was so fresh and the service was quick and pleasant. They have a large menu with some house specials. The sushi rolls were very big and the extra rice had a great flavor. The landscape outside, upstairs is so beautiful from the large trees and blossoming flowers. There were mostly tourists from the cruiseship but the locals love this place too. read more

Not a whole lot going on once you get off the ship. Place was decent. Wood tables. Pretty casual inside. We got edamame, a shrimp tempura roll with avocado and cucumber and that orange roe on top, a fried roll with mayo and hot sauce and green onion, and a bowl of seafood chowder. Chowder had mussels, potatoes, and some shredded crab on top with toast on the side. Flavor was a little different than the sushi I am used to up and down California. Not bad. Just not quite what I expected. The fried pieces were the better of the two rolls. Chowder was creamy and had a decent amount of stuff in it. Wish I had snapped the whole menu. I only got a piece of the board. One of the rolls on there is called Rock and Roll. Sockeye, cream cheese, avocado, rock shrimp tempura on top. During a recent Alaskan cruise, my wife & I came to Prince Rupert as the last port day before coming home. After a week of very nice dishes (especially many orders of fish and chips), we were ready for a proper Japanese meal. When we discovered this restaurant, we scheduled our day around lunch here. We arrived at the restaurant soon after it opened, only to find out the only seats inside were at the sushi bar. Not a problem, as we were glad to get seats. Many of our cruise mates must have had similar appetites, as most of the tables were filled with them (and our boat was the only one docked). My wife ordered the Tokyo Joe sushi plate with an extra mackerel nigiri, while I chose the Sushi Sampler with an extra King Salmon nigiri. The server brought the miso soup quickly, followed by the sushi dishes. The portions was quite large: the California rolls were overstuffed with filling, and the fish on the nigiri were two-biters (my apologies to the sushi purists, but I couldn't get these in my mouth in one bite). Even the miso soup came in a larger-than-normal bowl (maybe it's a normal Canadian portion). Overall, we had a wonderful experience. The food was excellent with reasonable prices and the service was great. In addition, there was free wifi in the restaurant and the bathroom was very clean! read more

Arrived via cruise ship in Prince Rupert. Noticed an Instagram post from a Virgin Voyages crew member and decided to visit. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a rustic environment featuring tables, a bar, window seating, and outdoor seating in a garden area. The menu includes all the classic sushi options alongside some unique selections. I ordered the Rock 'n' Roll roll and the Red Dragon; both featured fresh fish and meticulously prepared, tightly assembled rolls. OPA Sushi did not compromise on fillings or toppings. My husband ordered the seafood chowder, which he found to be very good. However, given the proximity to crab fishing, he was surprised that imitation crab was used in the dish. Nonetheless, he finished it completely. We also ordered iced tea, served in a can reminiscent of the 1990s, evoking a nostalgic childhood sensation. It had been decades since I last had Brisk iced tea in a can. The service was efficient and prompt, allowing us sufficient time to converse, connect to the Wi-Fi, manage social media posts, and conduct further research on Prince Rupert. We were in town for a cruise ship stop and checked the Yelp reviews for where to go. They did not lead us astray. This was an excellent place for a sushi. We had the Tunami and Sake nigiri. Both were excellent, some of the best nigiri I've ever had. Service was a bit slow because their were only a few staff, but not unreasonable. read more

Fantastic sushi spot just a short walk from the cruise ship! The salmon was absolute perfection--so fresh and flavorful. We also loved the gyoza, which was delicious. The "Sweet Chili O' Mine" roll was amazing, with a perfect blend of flavors. They also have a great selection of local beers from Wheelhouse Brewing. Service was fast and friendly. It was very good and priced so perfectly!! It was so good and I had so many rolls and pieces I was very happy. My favourite thing about eating here is the outdoor dining view: tall, beautiful trees with the sun *chefs kiss* follows by the drink, halo martini. Cute place to stop to rest if you're walking around town. Take a breathers and have a snack. I liked the salmon roll and the caterpillar. I would say the sushi here was very decent. I ordered the Sake Don and 1 Sake nigiri and 1 scallop nigiri. Sushi was fresh. I did like the Sake Don. It was definitely a better deal than ordering nigiri. The Sake Don came with 7 pieces of Sake. The Sake Don came with miso soup. Not bad. Note that they charge $2.50 for tea. Kind of steep for tea that is not even good quality. Yes the tea was very disappointing. Service was ok. I had to flag the waitress down in order to get service. I asked for tea refills and one of the waitress kept on forgetting and the other one took a long time to come over to refill it. Had to mention it couple times before I got tea refills. There are 2 Japanese restaurant in Cow Bay area. I prefer the other one. The whole meal came to $24. Kind of steep for what I would be getting if I am in Vancouver. We arrived in town (not via a cruise ship!), went to Opa with a group of 8 sushi keeners on a Tuesday evening, and had a short wait for a table without a reservation. The menu spans a wide range of sushi and related menu options, and has quite a few house specials. The food was excellent. The service was very attentive and correct on every item served for every person. Most of the tables seat 2 or 4, and there is outdoor seating as an option. The ambiance was great, with no problems carrying on a few conversations at our big table. Homemade green tea and black sesame ice creams were a nice finish. We closed the place out, and before leaving saw the kitchen staff do a remarkably through clean of the whole kitchen, top to bottom and every surface. read more

My friend and I asked for recommendations as we were wandering around and Opa was recommended as a 2nd choice after this other restaurant. We checked out the #1 recommendation and it didn't appeal to us. We looked a the menu for Opa decided to eat there. We were not disappointed with our meal at Opa. The food was very good and we especially loved the black sesame ice cream. Considered it was my friend and I and one other couple service was lousy. Quick pit stop in town from our cruise and decided on sushi. We had a party of 8. The place is kind of small and they were busy, but they were able to accommodate us with outdoor seating. The group ordered a variety of items from the menu but I ordered the Gyoza (6pc), Maui Wowie roll, Bubba roll, and Salmon sashimi (small,8pc). All were delicious. Both rolls had salmon, avocado and sauces, with other minor differences. The salmon was also very fresh and melted in my mouth. It was so good! I would come here again, except I'm from San Francisco. We stopped at Prince Rupert on an Alaskan cruise. Cute little place, very nice servers and hosts. They were full, but allowed us to walk in and sit on their back porch, it was clean and lovely - a few bugs as are most outdoor/nature seating sections. Got the Brazilian roll, because I love deep fried sushi rolls - 4/5. Also got the Mangofishous - 3/5. The gyoza - 3/5. But overall, they do have a nice selection - something for everyone. We ordered four rolls here: Black ninja, red dragon, fire cracker, and another one with mango in it. There were very very very good! I did not like the black ninja as much because I don't like the ginger flavor. Between the other three, I can't pick a favorite because they were all so delicious! The fish is nothing like I've tasted in sushi places in the United States. You can taste just how fresh it is. The service was great. Shayden was our waitress and was super awesome and responsive. It wasn't busy when we were there for lunch, so we got our food pretty quickly. The ambience of the restaurant is very Japanese. Tucked up above a great gift shop in cow bay, once you get to the top of the stairs you are welcomed into an authentic sushi bar! I cannot say enough about the atmosphere. It feels like a hidden gem. Our service was extremely fast and parking was ample. Prince Rupert is known for their local fish and it showed in their rolls. We tried various types of sushi with different types of salmon and tuna. The food came out in an appropriate amount of time and looked great. I was too excited to eat it that I forgot to take a picture.. The ambience in here is very unique. It's as if you're in a different country. The decor is all wooden and it suits this place perfectly. I don't often give full stars; full stars happen when many things must align, and the experience be outstanding and memorable. This was one of those times. The past 48 hours had been trying. I had been riding a motorcycle from Vancouver, en route to Fairbanks, and made a stop in Prince Rupert to take the ferry to Haines. I'd ridden through the rain and cold, camped with bears and elk, and endured some minimal mechanical issues. That meant that I was looking for a quick, quiet, healthy meal. Opa was suggested by multiple people, and the few online reviews I could find supported the choice of coming here. I walked from where I was staying, through a charming sunken garden and port buildings, and found the restaurant on the second floor of the Cow Bay Road. The restaurant has a cozy/romantic feel, overlooking the bay. I was skeptical at first, but one look at the menu, and my sushi apetite made me stay. It had local specials, and interesting rolls I had not seen before. I opted to sit at the empty sushi bar, and one more person joined me there shortly. Food, service, atmosphere, conversation - it all flowed well that night. The fish was fresh and the rolls well made. The gentleman sitting by me was a local uni fisherman, Michael, who also supplies the restaurant, with whom I had a conversation throughout the meal. I was fortunate to sample uni for the first time, and Michael shared some of the fresh roe rolls he had on his plate. Next thing I knew, a few hours had gone by, and great memories had been created. Bottom line: Opa is a gem in Prince Rupert, and a must for people that want to have delicious sushi in a great environment. I will vouch for the service, food, and atmosphere, but I did not try their drinks. For me it was a 5star experience. read more

First thing I have to say is that we drive from Terrace to eat sushi here. It's well worth it. The atmosphere is great. Nice upstairs location overlooking the Cow Bay area. The sashimi is fresh, the sushi rice is authentic, nigiri is well placed, and the sushi rolls are creative and delicious. The miso soup is really good. I give the food five stars. The only downside is that, unlike most Japanese restaurants I have eaten at, they charge for tea. Really? That's a little disappointing. My parents and I visited Opa Sushi several years ago while on a cruise to Alaska. The salmon nigiri made SUCH an impression on me that to this day, when I think about all of the sushi that I've eaten, I immediately think of the salmon nigiri at Opa as one of the best I've ever had. Probably because their fish is so fresh!!! I had since forgotten the name of this sushi bar until I looked for it on Yelp, and I instantly recognized by the photos of the stairs you must go up to get to this cute little sushi place. As i mentioned before, i'm pretty picky when it comes to sushi/sashimi. It's not that i don't like it, it's that i have had bad enough bad experiences that it has kinda turned me off of it. BUT on this business trip to Rupert, I got the seafood salad...then the next night, i got it AGAIN! oh man, so good! The quality of the sashimi cannot be matched.
