I wasn't expecting too much as I walked into Milly's for dinner but after eating there, I'm glad to report that Milly's bucks this trend. The restaurant itself is hip and cheeky and, while not the most traditional, with more modern toppings and techniques, they certainly cook a mean Detroit-style pizza. Milly's is only open a couple of days a week and according to their website, they sometimes can close early when the run out of dough. As with a proper pizza, it takes time to bake the pies, approximately 25 minutes our case. If the restaurant is busy, I'm sure it could take even longer; just be patient in any case. Featured Pizza, Small ($21) - Milly's changes their special every Thursday. For this week, they had a pizza with new potatoes, asparagus, green goddess dressing, and edible flower petals. Let's start with the most important part of a Detroit-style pizza - the crust. The crust here is seriously top tier, even compared with the top pizza parlors in Detroit. The bottom is fried until crisp, with a golden crust that looks lacy from all the browning and bubbles in the dough. The cheese crust straddling the edges is perfect: crunchy, cheesy and super savory. The interior crust is chewy, airy, with a crumb filled with small bubbles. The crust is the same texture throughout the pizza - there aren't any undercooked, soggy areas like some popular places in Detroit. The toppings at Milly's adhere to a more modern aesthetic. The potatoes, adding that nice earthy potato flavor, are smashed thin so that they're tender and creamy. Some of the red skin on the potatoes pops up above the cheese, allowing the heat from the oven to crisp them up a bit. The tender asparagus adds the vegetal and somewhat bitter and sweet notes. It's thinly sliced so that it doesn't turn the pizza soggy. The layer of cheese is tangy and creamy, giving a decent cheese pull on the edges where they intersect. The green goddess dressing seems to be made in house, adding fresh herb and umami flavors. Finally, the dried pansy flower petals are there mainly for aesthetics - they don't particularly add any flavor or texture to the pizza. (5/5) Milly Bread Special, Small ($13) - The special this week was ramp pesto. This is essentially a small 4-square pizza in size, but cut into 8 triangles (party style). It uses the same fantastic dough base as the pizza, featuring the same crisp, chewy crust, and thinner cheese layer so that it browns to a crisp. Instead of the standard toppings, it's brushed with butter and studded with garlic, then dressed with thinly microplaned parmesan to give an extra umami kick. The parmesan is added after the pizza is taken out of the oven, allowing some areas to develop into a delicate lace and others to remain thin strands. Ramp pesto is dolloped on top of each slice of bread. The pesto takes the best parts of both garlic and onion and adds a bit of a unique allium spiciness with the vegetal aroma really coming out. The rest of the dish serves as the perfect canvas to highlight the ramps. (5/5) Milly's is every bit as good, or possibly even better, than some of the top rated modern Detroit-style options in Detroit. I highly recommend making a stop here if you're in town - it's one of the best places you can get this style of pizza. Bathrooms - Two small unisex rooms in the back. The waitress came over and stated that it was very loud. She asked if we wanted to move to a different area and walked us over to a seat. We got seated and she ran to get the drinks. The table was slanted, but the area was completely empty and quiet. When I asked her about items on the menu, she did not seem to know any information. I asked for caesar dressing, she told me she didn't think they had that, even though caesar salad was listed on the menu. She had to run back and ask about a few things, which was fine. My husband ordered the chimichanga and regretted it. It came out loaded with practically a whole salad covering it. Tons of lettuce and tomatoes on top. I had a salad that was loaded with dressing. I tried my best to eat it, and it was very salty. We only had a lunchable at 12pm so we were starving. My alfredo came put with some of it practically spilling out on the sides. I took one bite and it was loaded with garlic. It was so powerful, that it was hurting the back of my throat. I let the waitress know that I have a mild allergy when a lot of garlic is used. Usually, if there is a tiny minced amount it doesn't bother me. This pasta, was loaded with a lot of garlic and salt. I nicely asked told her that I could not eat it because of this. While we were waiting, they also forgot to bring out the beans and rice, and the bread with butter. We had to mention it and they said "I'm not sure if that comes with it." This is the worst part... in the photos there is a picture of a yellow hallway. Suddenly an old man walks around the corner and is loudly making fun of me. There was no one else in that room and no music. He looked at me as well. He said "ofcourse there is a lot of garlic its alfredo is she stupid or something, thats hilarious." I suddenly felt uneasy, and I tried to just ignore it. In the photo you can also see a small window area where food is picked up. Our waitress, who we haven't seen, only when I called her over, was standing there talking about us. We could hear the entire conversation because she was loudly telling them. She was saying "oh my gosh you didnt hear the whole ordeal, basically this chick orders the alfredo and didnt realize we put a lot of garlic when its alfredo" and they continued to just laugh at me and talk about it. Another waitress, the one that brought the food out in the first place, came to bring the bread. My husband asked for the bill and told her we no longer wanted to stay. This experience was so awful that I started crying. It ruined out anniversary dinner. I felt so embarrassed. She was nice enough to ask us what happened. She was trying to figure out what went wrong. We only saw our waitress when she moved us, and came to give drinks and take the order. While she was trying to talk to us, our waitress walked up to her. She started saying how she only charged us for the salad. The waitress trying to talk to her, kindly told her to walk away as it was making the situation worse. We asked for the bill, and she told us that it was covered and she did apologize. Even with the apology, it was such a horrible and awful experience that really dampered the evening. We found this to be a strange name for a restaurant, but we decided to turn around and stop by. Double the ice cream never hurt anyone, especially after a long two days at Isle Royale. As the name implies, Drive-Thru Depot is mainly drive through or pickup only. There are parking spots numbered up to 10 so the employees can bring your food out to you. You can go inside to order through a door on the South end, but it's pretty much no frills standing room only. There are a couple of tables set up outside if you're interested in eating there. While we were there only for the frozen custard, they sell a wide variety of burgers, hot dogs and other food. They also have ice cream, although it's not made in house and is instead from Cedar Crest. We got the smallest amount of custard possible, just to try the place out. Baby Frozen Custard, Pistachio ($2.50) - The baby size is a 9oz cup piled high with custard, with the swirl spilling over the top of the cup. The custard is dense, creamy and smooth with a good sweetness level. It's not quite as rich as some of the top custard places, but handily beats out most places outside of the Midwest. The color is strikingly mint green; before our first bite we were wondering if they gave us the wrong flavor. But after eating it, we found a pleasant artificial pistachio aroma on the tongue. My best guess is that this is probably some kind of frozen custard pre-mix, but hey, as long as it's churned correctly, most custards are good custards. (4/5) Drive-Thru Depot is worth a stop if you're in the area for a quick snack. While we were there, it was pretty busy with customers lining up in the drive through and parked waiting for pickup orders.
