The food has slipped a bit in my opinion and the prices have gone way up (of course we know how our economy is I get it) The service has always been nice that has never changed I think, I have never had bad service when ordering food here. This is a no-frills, straight-up Mexican diner that offers a fairly extensive menu. For lunch, I ordered the Mojarra Frita, which is an item rarely served in other similar restaurants. It is a deep fried whole tilapia that is crispy on the outside and yet tender inside. For some who are averse or not used to seeing a whole fish on a lunch plate, opt for the usual fish-and-chips instead. But for me, the Mojarra Frits is the real deal! I highly recommend it. It's alright. If you are looking for cheap, mediocre Mexican food, then this is your place. The food is subpar really. There's good and bad. The guacamole is watery. It isn't just avocados and lemon, salt added. It's super watery and not very good. I don't like the beans. Not sure why, they just aren't my favorite. The cheese enchiladas were okay. I guess I'd order them again. But there's definitely better enchiladas out there. I like the rice. I ordered the chips and cheese nachos. It is just chips and cheese on top. I ordered a side of guacamole and pico de gallo. I put those on top and it was better. Not bad. I just wish the guacamole wasn't watery and more like a sauce. My husband ordered a breakfast burrito and the enchilada and chile relleno combination. He enjoyed both a lot. He agreed the beans were just okay. He loved the breakfast burrito the most. And enjoyed the chile relleno. Service was fine. They made the food quickly and brought it out. Ambiance was not very busy. A couple other people came in after we did. I was down in the oc with some time to kill. i wanted to stop at Anaheim Feed (full disclosure- my grandfather owned this place for years, and now it's run by my cousins) to get some dog treats, but even after driving by my grandparents' old house and scanning a few parks for possible future metal detecting, i still had an hour before Anaheim Feed was to open at 8. So im driving down Lemon and I see Don Carlos and remember driving by it a million times as a kid. It's one of the burger joint/diners you see everywhere that all seem to be cast from the same mold. Except this one serves Mexican food. The first thing I notice is the super friendly staff. I order a Spanish omelet at the counter and proceed to my spacious booth. Coffee is delivered, they only had the fake cream but the waitress cheerfully supplied some real milk. Add some pink sugar and the coffee was good. The omelet arrived, cooked and spicy as requested, and I enjoyed a very pleasant breakfast. This is one of those joints that has EVERYTHING on the menu, from steaks to jello. I'm sure it's all decent and priced well. I got out of there for under 20 bucks, which is unusual these days. Final verdict (based on scant info) - this place is fine. I've stopped her about 4 times in the past 6 weeks and that alone is a record for me. The breakfast burritos and Huevos Racheros were excellente!!! A Burger Box with sandwich, fries, zucchini and onion rings cost me under $11 ( hand batter not frozen zucchini). The pastrami sandwich box was $15. One of last times I had sat with my family inside, we had ordered the pozole, chilaquiles and burrito. The pozole was below average, bland, with no flavor. The chilaquiles were soggy, overall everything was just flavorless. So, I gave it one last try by myself a few weeks ago. I had called in to place in order and while I was on the phone, I asked what was in the burrito and the guy on the phone sounded like it was such a hassle to explain what was in the burrito. Was on a layover from my bus route and had an hour to kill and I was hungry. I usually walk to the store by the Amtrak station but they're kinda expensive and the food is mid.
