This was a nice surprise after sitting through traffic while on our way up to Mammoth. It's right off of the freeway, so you don't have to travel too far since there aren't a lot of sit down restaurants along this strip of Hwy 14. We were there in between lunch and dinner service, so a lot of the servers were just standing around and some of them were getting some fuel in before the rush. You get complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were freshly fried, but the salsa reminded me of store bought salsa. It was ok, but I was expecting something more authentic. I ordered the carne asada and they overcooked the steak. I wish it was more on the medium side. My wife ordered the shrimp enchilada and the sauce was really good. It was savory and slightly tart from the tomatillo sauce. It wasn't over powering and so that's how I like it. The restaurant does have a dingy smell and you can see how old the carpet is. I'm pretty sure most of the smell is coming from that. On our way back home from Leona Valley cherry picking we stopped by to have lunch. I found them on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Once we walked in we were greeted by a friendly gentlemen that sat us right away. (Wish I asked for his name) once seated they brought us salsa and chips. NOON the restaurant was empty, we went to the bar, there were about 10 seats at the front & 3 were occupied the rest of the front BAR HAD RESERVED SEATING CARDS, I said to the BARTENDER "THESE AREN'T RESERVED" because I have never seen a reserved bar its always been 1st come 1st served & he said yes they are! There is a group of old ladies that are there everyday, so they say, they could have easily occupied the entire corner of the restaurant including half of the section of the bar stools they were currently sitting at, leaving available the other half for others! (the back bar is undesirable, dark & has a cold vibe) that's where they should seat the OLD LADIES CLUB! We wanted to enjoy our lunch & socializing with others like the good ole days but they are long gone...We used to live in Acton and moved a few years ago and we were passing through. It used to be, the bar was filled with the locals and was genuinely a family community vibe! We felt like outsiders and walked out, BOO HOO felt very unwelcomed, this is no way to run a bar business! This place is a typical Mexican restaurant. I had the taco and enchilada plate. Both of which were good. Their enchilada sauce is delicious. The taco was ok. Chips and salsa were served when we sat down. It's got a good, laidback atmosphere. The only complaint I have is that the waiter came by to take our order and dropped our food off and that was the last we saw of him. We had to ask the front desk to get our bill and I never got a refill of my drink. It wasn't that busy. I'd still go back because the food was really good. read more

Been here twice and I'd definitely say that dining in is the way to go. We dined in once and shared the molcajete with a group of three and we could have shared the two person molcajete for 2 people with almost 4. We also had champanitas (I think that's what they were called). It was margaritas with champagne in them....loved it! Based off this experience we will definitely go back! However we did take out the other day and the same care was not taken or the food just didn't taste as good. Service both times was excellent and very welcoming! First... I almost never give a 5-star on my first visit... but this place... wow! Great atmosphere the chicken tortilla soup is honestly, after visiting 30 countries and 43 states, the beat soup I have ever eaten.... I asked the waitress to fill the Spanish fountain with it, and she thought I was joking ... the chicken enchilada and chili relleno combo was flavorful beyond description. I highly recommend this place based on those two experiences... oh and the servings are huge. I am ready for a nap but, instead I have to drive an hour home. We decided to invite friends to go dining in and it was very good . We've been back twice in a 6 month period because we travel a lot and it has been spot on each time we go. Went for late lunch on the weekend and the place was almost empty but we were not deterred. This used to be a Don Cuco, which was our Go-To place at other locations. Sadly, last time at Don Cuco, it wasn't up to par. This place served similar food but waaaayyy fresher! Not overloaded with too much cheese. Had great flavor. The entrees came with choice of soup or salad and we got the Albóndiga and Chicken Tortilla soups--also very delicious and the perfect size. You immediately get served with chips and salsa--fresh, crunchy chips and non-spicy salsa. I recommend also asking for the spicy habanero salsa; has just the right kick and such a good smoky flavor. The Horchata is a true horchata: creamy and milky, not watered down at all or overwhelmed by cinnamon. You can taste the condensed milk, which tells you it's made there. Talk about being pleasantly surprised. On a recent visit to Acton, CA my friends asked me to find a place for us to eat. The pickins were slim in our nearest vicinity other than a few fast food places and a restaurant with 2.5 stars on Yelp (eeks). Then I came across Don Chetos on here and the gang was all in. I was super apprehensive. Being Mexican and growing up on good Mexican food, I'm really cautious with Mexican food. I need flavor, authenticity, heart! Don Cheto's is located at the end of a small strip mall off of highway 14. The exterior is so misleading due to it's modesty. You open the door and enter a wonderland of Mexican culture packed into a decent sized restaurant. I immediately fell in love with the nopal (cactus) chandelier! I paused and took a photo right away. There were Mexican curios all over the small lobby. We entered the first dining area and there was a fountain in the middle! It was filled with colorful (artificial) flowers. We were seated and my eyes couldn't stop wandering over all of the Mexican decor. It was so authentic and colorful. Our server was humorous, pleasant and SUPER attentive. We really liked him! We were a party of 6 and we all loved our food. I had the enchiladas with a side of rice and frijoles de la olla. They were sprinkled with diced onion, cilantro, and tomato, just the way my mom would serve them. The food was flavorful and filled with authenticity. The food was made with heart and you could taste it. The dining area was filled with music to the likes of Juan Gabriel, Rocio Durcal, and Ana Gabriel. I almost felt like getting the broom out and cleaning because that was our Saturday cleaning music growing up. This restaurant was the most pleasant experience in a Mexican restaurant that I've had in a long time. It felt like home. I'm terribly sad that Don Cheto's is so far away from where I live but I'm super grateful to have stopped and dined here! This Mexican restaurant came with high recommendations from one of my wife's lady friends at our gym. So today we finally gave Don Chato a try for lunch. Arriving around 1:30 pm most of their lunch crowd had cleared, other than a boisterous group in the bar area, the restaurant was mostly empty. We were soon shown to a cozy booth in a classic Mexican setting; a bit dark but every table candlelit. Our server and the entire staff were totally helpful and friendly. Given our lunch menus we decided on our dishes after several minutes. First up was our complimentary chips and salsa, a traditional barometer of ours to help determine what might be in store at a Mexican restaurant. And this combo tested very positive on our taste meters! Fresh crisp chips and spicy delicious salsa, with just the right amount of heat to be enjoyable. And next came my wife's order of chicken tortilla soup which she shared with me; quite tasty with maybe a tad bit too much tomato taste to it though. But still very enjoyable. Soon followed by my a la carte fish taco. Then finally my 2 chicken mole enchiladas combo with rice and choice of black beans. Along with her order of el taco grande(huge!). Overall my first time take on Don Chato was good but not necessarily great Mexican cuisine. Kind of a mix between very good and average, depending on what you order and that's true with many restaurants. Great chips and salsa, and very good tortilla soup. But my fish taco was somewhat disappointing with way more filling than needed, with very little fish(breaded). Good chicken mole, though the chicken was more on the dryer side than I would have liked. The rice and black beans were decent. Jackie seemed satisfied with her humongous beef taco which also came with rice and black beans, with most of it leftover to go. I saved an enchilada and a good bit of beans and rice for dinner tonight myself. Overall this restaurant warrants a future return visit in our book. We'd like to try a few other items on the menu.
