I made it a point to go there soon after, not because it looked promising, but because it could not have looked more like a hole in the wall--or a red-themed dollar store with a fish on it. Later, I realized the logo was actually a curved sombrero. In my experience, these off-looking shops usually turn out to be well-kept secrets. The fact that Don Chuy's sits in a residential area made it feel a little more isolated from the busyness of downtown Provo. Entering the taqueria feels inviting and festive with red, white, and blue coloring the dining room and red, green, and blue gleaming on their frosted Christmas tree. Exotic green plants in ceramic pots and red poinsettia bouquets ornament mantles and shelves while BYU flags and fiery tapestries of animals embellish the walls. I heard that don chuy's was offering Birria items so I had to stop by to try for myself!!! I ordered the bundle they offer with 3 birria queso tacos with the consome. The plate also came with limes and a cilantro onion topping. It was soooo good!! The cheese in the tacos was incredible, the birria meat was perfectly tender, and the consome dip added an incredible flavor. I would 100% recommend this to everyone!! My wife and I came by on a Tuesday night, and found out they have quite a good deal Taco Tuesday meal, street tacos are $1.25 each, and steak tacos are included in that deal. My wife loves birria so she got the birria plate, which was very generous portions and came with the birria, beans, rice and corn tortillas. Before I get to the food, their salsa bar is great with green, red and avocado salsa, and limes and the pickled carrot stuff. And the horchata is all you can drink, and is AMAZING, probably the best horchata I've had thus far. The tacos were great, the birria plate was great too, and the portions were enough for us to take home about half of it. On Tuesdays, this is the place I'm coming to from now on. read more

One of the few reasons, I will never eat here is due to the waiters , the staff nit being friendly. We walked in , the waitress looked me up , we said, Hello and she just did not respond. I am sad to say it is my least favorite "Carne Asada fries" I've had in the Provo area. Let's break it down: Portion size is pretty large but quantity doesn't trump quality in my opinion. I was really looking forward to some Birria Ramen, but the noodles were super tough, and the portion size was smaller than I was expecting for the price. The onions and cilantro seemed old. The salsas they have on the side tasted very old and some of them even tasted rotten. We also got street tacos with carne asada and carnitas. The carnitas were almost flavorless, and the carne asada dry and chewy. Most of the food just seemed old and reheated, and the quality was entirely lacking. This space has changed hands quite a few times over the years, and was most recently Emanuel's, which I wasn't a huge fan of. When I saw today that Don Chuy's was open, I pulled over into the parking lot and found it pretty packed with customers. Although I'm a big fan of tacos and burritos, I asked was I should get and was recommended the #20, the carne asada and camarones plate (steak and shrimp). It came out in less than 5 minutes, during which time I grabbed salsas, limes, and onions from the salsa bar. I was not so impressed with the beans and rice, which were both quite dry and a little sub-par for what you'd expect from Provo Mexican restaurants. I did enjoy the hot, housemade tortillas. They were plenty chewy, which is my favorite. The shrimp was alright: about what you'd expect for a landlocked state. They didn't taste super fresh and had obviously been frozen, but they were tasty enough. I thought the carne asada was a little underseasoned but was well pounded and trimmed of fat. It was the right amount of tenderness. There were four salsas at the bar, along with carrots, cilantro, limes, onions, and peppers. The premises were very clean and attractive. I was working here in Provo and stopped by to get something for lunch. I ended up getting a California burrito and it was really bland. I looked for little salt packages to see if they had any and all they had was pepper sadly. Also they had three sauces green, a salsa looking one and the only one that was good which was an avocado flavor one. For cheap, delicious food, you have got to try don chuy's! The menu is so huge you will have to come back to try everything--and believe me, you will want to try a lot! I especially liked the frozen coconut horchata (mind=blown!) and the enchilada style burrito with green Chile sauce, which packed just the right amount of heat. They have a sweet (complimentary) salsa bar too. It's not the cleanest or fastest service, but honestly that's just part of the aesthetic. Usually this is during rush hours though. -Occasional inconsistency in what the food contains. I have had rice that contained corn kernels and rice that didn't. They have more egg than potato.. (personal preference) -big burritos -friendly service -Outdoor and indoor seating CONS: - service can be slow. I wouldn't come here in a rush. -it gets really hot inside sometimes -inconsistent; there's some variation in portions and proportions depending on whose cooking -sometimes they forget items, but are quick to fix any mistakes. Don Chuys is the closest I've come to finding food that tastes just like my favorite dive Mexican food places from back home! You can't beat their burritos or rolled tacos in quality and price! Pros: Portion Sizes are huge, so for what you pay, it's a really good deal. The breakfast burritos are super good, and if you come in the morning, they are half off! The other food is okay, it's not my favorite I've ever tried, and I've definitely had way better Mexican food. But, for the price, it's pretty good. The free salsa bar has amazing avocado salsa, and their pickled carrots and onions are to die for. So, so good. I can't go there and not eat them. Cons: It feels like the cashiers are not very nice. I usually feel like an inconvenience for going there and ordering food. The cooks are very nice, and are usually easier to ask for help with an order, as the cashiers usually pretend you're not there. There are inconsistencies with the food- sometimes portions are bigger or smaller, and sometimes the free salsa bar avocado sauce is thinner, or thicker depending on when you go. I really liked this place! We live right around the corner and now I really regret not giving this place a chance sooner. I LOVED their tacos! The day we went their special was $1 tacos. They weren't tiny little tacos either. They were big and full of meat,cheese and lettuce! They have really good beans and rice as well. Their sauce station was really cold (some places aren't) and it was the end of the night! I hate when I go to some places and their condiment are warms and some are barely full to empty. This was not the case. It also had a big selection of sauces and other condiments. One thing I would fix is their breakfast burritos, they didn't have very much bacon, like barely any. So listen, this food is not going to change your life because of how good it is. I would put it maybe a one shrute buck above Betos and two Stanly nickels above Rancharitos. This food is really really good though. The staff is attentive and fun to talk to and they work hard. It's quality food at a fair price. They are always running deals on different food and they have menudo on the weekends which is awesome! My personal favorites include rolled tacos, smothered bean and cheese burrito, breakfast burritos, and their quesadillas are great! As far as appearance this is a fast food Mexican place so if you're expecting the sombreros and maracas you're going to be disappointed.
