Great little spot, pretty low key but that's often the best way to be. It was packed which is great to see and despite the crowd, the food got served out very quickly. I've had traumatic experiences with burritos in the past so I was hesitant in ordering the green burrito. However, after just one smooch with the potatoes it was true love. I'm a fan of square potatoes now they were truly delightful. The head hancho of it all proved to be the best part. The outside, easy on the eyes, and the inside was just magnificent! Most of the selections there were of the spicy variety. The friendly young man who took our order let me practice my Spanish with him. My friend and I barely squeezed inside the door at the end of a very long line of customers at Don Joaquin's on Cougar Boulevard--she had heard it was a popular place. After several minutes of loud small talk, we were suddenly thrust forward by the throng of customers that had accumulated behind us, toward the front of an ordering counter, which felt more like a spotlight demanding improvisation--and our credit cards--in two minutes or less. Having stuttered out the first thing we could spot on the menu and tapped our cards, we were released to the refreshment table where we gathered our napkins, plastic forks, and quartered limes before sitting down in a hard-style booth. As we waited for the number on our receipt to be called, I looked around at the long, narrow dining area that was really an extension of the standing progression of customers, only the ones on this side of the counter were sitting rather than standing. A "Y" flag hung from the ceiling above the ordering counter, welcoming both the standing and the sitting BYU students--and everyone else too. The place was packed with families, couples, and individuals who didn't appear to be students at all, as if they had gone out of their way to the outskirts of campus to come to this restaurant. After collecting our order on a tray--two small $2.49 street tacos each--from a window, we sat down and looked at our tiny corn tortillas sprinkled with small chunks of meat for a few seconds. Then my friend spotted a topping bar that I hadn't even noticed because of all the people surrounding it. So, we followed sequence once again to finish our taco journey. The end of that journey had to be washed down with water after every bite because the carne asada and tortillas (store-bought?) were so dry, and the topping bar was so limited. Had I drenched them in the sweltering salsa available, they might have gone down easier, but I would have still needed water. The corn tortillas crumbled to bits; they were so raw, missing the transformed soft flakiness and fried flavors that come from being cooked skillfully. Perhaps some Pico de Gallo or even plain diced tomatoes might have added some texture and flavor to those tacos, but at least I had some fresh lime juice to make my carne asada taste like something more than dehydrated beef pebbles. I love street tacos enough that if I hadn't been to any other taco places, Don Joaquin's $2.49 tacos would have been a sanctuary. But I have been to other places, and it turns out that Don Joaquin's street tacos are far below average, even for the low price. To be fair, perhaps all the hype is attached to other items on the menu. Perhaps the phrase "Street Tacos" on their sign is just meant as bait to reel people in to buy more appealing dishes on their menu. It seems to be working. Or maybe people in Provo are just conditioned to favor chain restaurants like the Del Taco located in the same strip mall. read more

This is 100% where the locals go. I stopped by while traveling from AZ and was very impressed. When I arrived there was a line almost out the door, so expect a bit of a wait to order. Once I did place my order though, all my food was made quickly and fresh. I got several different kinds of tacos, but the lengua was my favorite. All of it was tender and flavored well. I also loved the taco bar, but do beware that if it says it's spicy, it's spicy! If you're looking for a taco place that has reasonable prices and is authentic, you should check this place out! All of the options for meat can be had in tacos, burritos, or gringas. If you have not had a gringa it is a taco with cheese melted into it on the griddle. Super tasty and not much more than the $2 tacos, they also have a special that is 4 tacos and a drink for $9. We enjoyed our food and found the meat to be flavorful, abundant, and well seasoned. Not too many fatty pieces either. The tortillas themselves are very fresh. We opted for corn with the tacos and gringas as that is the traditional method of serving. The carne asada or steak is well seasoned. The Al Pastor is on a trompo or spit and served with grilled pineapple. The salsa bar is also great and well positioned to add toppings to your tacos after you get the food. The guacamole salsa was amazing as well as the others. They even have a pineapple habanero slaw to add as well as the traditional limes, cilantro, radishes, and onions. All fresh and delicious! The soda fountain also offers Jarritos on tap. The only downside to Don Joaquin's is the eating environment inside. The restaurant has been sweatingly hot the last couple times I've eaten here. Well well well, honestly where do I begin? If you're looking for a delicious, authentic, tacos at an affordable, authentic price--Don Joaquin's is the place for you. The building itself is nestled between a couple of other restaurants, which means parking can be a beast, trying to share spaces between Subway lovers and Hawaiian BBQ fanatics. Luckily, I make sure not to go during the busiest hours, so I'm able to find a space fairly easily. Tacos, burritos, and other items are available (honestly, I don't know what else there is because I adhere to the strict "Tacos 4 Lyfe" diet). There is a self serve toppings bar, complete with fresh limes, chopped onions and cilantro, and different salsas and cabbage to freshen up your meal. The employees do an awesome job at keeping the space stocked and clean, which is highly appreciated on my part. Lots of seating is available, bathrooms are clean, and the service is great. Honestly, you can't find a better place in Provo, especially for those Mormon Missionaries returning home from living in Mexico, craving a little taste of the good place.
