Everyone at this restaurant is so nice! The restaurant is charming and old-fashioned kind of. But the food is really good! I wasn't really hungry so I just got a large bowl of wonton soup and a bowl of white rice and a Diet Coke that was a great meal! I know there are so many Chinese restaurants around, but I really hope that you'll check this one out. It reminds me of a great restaurant that used to be in Dupont Circle in DC when I lived there. Food was excellent and the service was too. Very nice owner. Been in business over 20 years. I had a staple of Sweet and Sour chicken. This was better than most because the sauce was server separately and you dipped the chicken in the sauce. First, the sauce was perfect. Not too sweet, like most Chinese restaurants, The chicken has a tender coating and not heavily fried. my wife tried Happy Trio and wants to go back. I ordered from Don Don Chinese Restaurant for the first time earlier this year. They've been here as long as I've lived in Carnegie, although they semi-recently changed buildings (and now share a kitchen with Kasai Kogi Bar Delivery). I never ate at their old location but decided earlier this year while cooped up at home that it was time to finally try this local dining option. I ordered wonton soup, dumplings, and pork with zucchini, figuring these things would be a good mix of appetizers and a main course. None of it disappointed, at least not by American Chinese food standards. The wonton soup and dumplings really hit the spot in terms of comfort food (AKA carbs, wonderful carbs!). The pork and zucchini dish was also delicious, which I was very happy about since pork is the sort of thing that some restaurants just can't prepare properly. Disclaimer: I can see someone disliking the sauce since it was on the sweeter side. But as with the appetizers, my comfort-seeking taste buds were happy! Note that I haven't eaten a sit-down meal at the restaurant itself since Don Don and Kasai began sharing the space, so I can't comment on an in-house dining experience in this particular review. But I can say that I was pleased with what I ordered. Everything was ready on-time (as I had ordered takeout) and was fresh, hot, and tasty when it got back to my apartment with me. I don't live in the Pittsburgh area anymore, but we were visiting relatives, and wanted to pick up takeout for about six people. Chinese food like everything else is getting extremely expensive compared to what it used to be. But not this place. The food was outstanding and fresh Perfectly boxed up for us and exactly what we ordered the way we wanted it. Very cool experience. Not easy to find Chinese restaurants in Pittsburgh that have egg foo young. And this restaurant makes egg foo yong perfectly - crispy, and not greasy. And the price is extremely competitive and less than most. Also enjoyed their happy family and eggrolls. Fellow yelpers, you me down! First time that I walked out with out eating. Nothing was edible or fixable in the least. Got general Tso lunch. Fried rice was artificial yellow with a few cold peas. The rice itself was hard and cold. At least it had no flavor. I wish I could say the same about the egg roll. Equally hard and clearly old the inards looked and smelled like rotten cabbage. It takes every bit of self control I have to not suggest Don Don every. Single. Time. Is it good for my waistline? Absolutely not. Will the MSG and oil shave ten years off my life? Most likely. I ordered delivery from here tonight, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think they have recently merged with Kasai sushi in Carnegie, and the old Don Don phone number does not work. If you call Kasai's number you can reach Don Don from there now too. I asked about delivery, and they only deliver the Chinese food items but not the sushi as of right now. I ordered the general tso chicken with white rice and crab rangoons. The rice was a little bit too...I don't want to say watery, but it might have been a little over cooked. That was my only issue, everything else was really good. The chicken was really flavorful, and I think a little bit better tasting than your average cheap Chinese place. The crab rangoons were really tasty and pretty much overfilled with filling, which was actually delicious. My total came to $16, so that is a bit steep, but it was worth it to fix my Chinese craving. They said it would take 45 minutes, but it only took like 25. I'll be ordering again in the future! read more

I came here with two friends prior to visiting Apis Meadery next door this past weekend. I ordered the General Tso's chicken, and my friends ordered the sesame chicken, crab rangoon, and another appetizer (egg rolls?). They ordered the combo with less meat, and I ordered the one with more--the names were very similar, which I found confusing. The food took quite a while to come up (~15 min.), so I'd suggest calling ahead if you're in a rush. While we were waiting, the woman behind the counter yelled at someone over the phone in Chinese, and then at a guy who came in to pick up food for delivery (probably the same person). To be honest, I'm not much of a fan of Americanized Chinese cuisine (I lived in Singapore for 3 mos. and have visited Hong King and Japan); it's been awhile since I've had it, and this dish reminded me why. I don't care for the overbearing sweetness and thickness of the sauce, nor do I care for the pre-cut meat in the dishes (I like to cut up my own meat, thank you very much), so the flavors and textures don't do much for me. Having said that, my friends claimed this was the best Americanized Chinese fare they'd had in PGH (and they live in Squirrel Hill!), so if you're a fan of this cuisine, you can take that into consideration. I used to order takeout here once every month or so. The food tastes average and the price is good. It's your typical low-end Chinese place. The last (and final) time I ordered here I just so happened to be picking up my order while a health inspector from allegheny county health department was making his rounds. While I was waiting on my food (which took much longer than usual) the inspector was pointing out violations. He also requested a copy of a certificate that the man behind the register was unable to produce. The inspector looked at me like I was crazy for waiting on my food despite the obvious poor conditions. As for the rest of the place - it's always been kind of dirty inside. The carpets are just FILTHY and the walls match. There are always children's toys scattered about the floor because the owners children are always there, so be careful not to trip. The workers do seem like nice people just trying to make a living but when it comes to cleanliness Don Don is lacking. read more

This place is awful. This was our first (and only!) time we've eaten here. We got the crab rangoon, shrimp egg foo young, and shrimp with lobster sauce combo as a call-ahead takeout order. When we got there to pick up the food, it was ready but there were employees(?) or family lounging or napping in a couple of the booths. We should have known then that if they were that dead on a Saturday night the place wasn't that great. I mean, it's one thing for a restaurant to be family operated, and another thing for the restaurant to be like their apartment. Whatever. The food was almost inedible. The crab rangoon were decent, but that's not an item we usually get at a Chinese place, so we don't have much of a frame of reference. Egg foo young is my standard order--so I've had a plenty different places to compare to. It was gross. The patties of egg and shrimp were standard quality, but what really makes the meal is the sauce, which, thank god, comes on the side. This goop was dark dark brown and the consistency of raw egg yolks, which was super strange, so thankfully I put it on the side of my plate instead of on my food. It tasted like some bizarre combination of anise (licorice) and spearmint. What the hell. I scraped it off my plate. The shrimp with lobster sauce was also really strange. My husband, unfortunately, added the sauce straight to his food. It was also a weird, raw egg-y texture. He choked down the shrimp in the interest of not wasting money on the meal, but couldn't finish. I tried it and it was like pure salt. We ended up eating plain egg foo young patties with rice and some soy sauce we had at home. What a disappointment. read more

Before ordering from this place, I read all the reviews. The only bad reviews are from long ago, the more current reviews show favorability to the food and service. I will say up front that this isn't an authentic style Chinese restaurant, it's Chinese American, which isn't bad. They seem to cater to their patrons and give great service in doing so, and all for a good price. Their food tastes great. I had the Singapore noodles and my wife, the mixed vegetables with fried tofu in Hunan sauce. I can't say they're the best as I've only tried 2 dishes there as of current, but am impressed so far. I will update as I try more dishes from this establishment. To address some points made in older reviews. The restaurant seems clean to me, and mentions of the health department visit from a post years ago when it was in a different location, claiming violations and them not having a certificate are blown out of proportion. I'm a certified serve safe manager and the paper that it seems the board of health was looking for was a serve safe course completion, which they most likely had or produced shortly after or would have been shut down. The same goes for violations, they most likely were minor violations that could have led to bigger problems if not corrected, many restaurants have these minor problems, that's why the board of health comes around to prevent them from becoming big. On a final note, if you like spicy, you can request extra spice. Their Hunan sauce starts at about a 3-4 on a scale of 1 to 10. If you increase the spice level, do it in increments like try a 6, don't risk ruining your meal. I use to order here fairly often. The past 2 years their food has been getting progressively worse every time I order. It doesn't help that the owner that always is at the register is so rude to me every time. I finally decided that I'm done. I don't think I should feel let an inconvenience when ordering food from a restaurant. Let alone one that the food isn't even that good. Also the inside is dirty as heck. They have re-opened in their new location (the old Kasai) and it is a beautiful restaurant!! They now have sushi offered too. Great food and very reasonable prices and I am glad that they are back!! And the owners are wonderful people too! read more

All I can say is the worst! We were the only 2 people in the place for lunch, the place was freezing and loaded with kids toys! 2 bicycles, a scooter, and an electronic keyboard graced the dining room. A fish tank with filthy, slimy fingerprints smeared all over it is there for your enjoyment. Our food came... no water to drink, no tea, medium temperature food. Of course its cold, just like the room, I never took my jacket off! The plates are too small, you food spills over onto some semi-clean tables as you sit in your completely worn out booth seat. The fried noodles were out of a box and nasty, the shrimp was mushy, the fried rice was bright yellow. We asked for water, they brought us 1 in a SOLO cup for 2 people. I asked for hot tea, they said 10 minutes. What Chinese restaurant does not have hot tea available upon request? Over all.... my first and last visit to this place. So try eating dry rice with dried out Chicken... It was disappointing.
