The food here is tasty for dine in. Recently on take out for week day lunches my coworkers have said their food has been a little inconsistent but I've always got a solid lunch order. I usually order shrimp or a tofu dish with rice and veggie egg roll and am always very content. The restaurant has an old school vibe that's homie and the staff is always pleasant. Fast hot and fresh food. It's usually hard to find any half way decent Chinese food west of NY and out of New England. This place was almost as good as in the Northeast. I recently ordered takeout with a few coworkers for lunch. We were able to place the order online and it was delivered to our office in about 30 minutes. I ordered the Szechuan vegetables lunch special. I had a choice of rice (white rice) and either soup or an egg roll (I chose egg drop soup). I was pleasantly surprised by several things, so thank you for the excellent experience. Seems to be a very popular spot for call in/take out. The take out system seems very efficient as every person who came in showed something on their phone and got their food without delay. I chose to eat in. 20 seconds after being seated, a nice pot of green tea and a glass of ice water was placed on my table - loved it! They make a wide variety of different styles of "Chinese" food so you're likely to find something you want. The portion was plenty; I didn't even finish it. The flavor was good. The staff was friendly. The bathrooms were clean. They also have a large tropical aquarium at the front that drew the attention of those there for pickup. Great old-school Chinese restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh, the last remaining vestige of Pittsburgh's Chinatown from generations ago (run by descendants of the original owners I understand?) The service first off is super-efficient. They seat you, take orders, and deliver food pretty quickly. The food itself is pretty good, standard Chinese food fare. The eggroll was hot and crispy, with a savory, almost nutty vegetable filling. The kung pao (bow?) chicken was great - plenty of sauce, peanuts, and heat. My husband and I had a great dinner at Chinatown Inn, the last remaining piece of Pittsburgh's original Chinatown--and it's full of charm and history. From the moment you walk in, the warmth of the decor instantly welcomes you. You can feel the history in the walls. We started with the wonton soup, which was cozy and flavorful, with soft, pillowy wontons and fresh scallions. I had a crispy, golden egg roll packed with veggies, while Scott enjoyed the honey sesame chicken--sweet, sticky, and satisfying. I tried the Mongolian beef and loved the mix of tender meat, baby corn, mushrooms, and crunchy peppers. The Singapore Sling was fruity and fun, and the complimentary hot tea was a nice touch. Expected a typical American Chinese restaurant with general Tsao chicken etc. but was actually blown away by the quality of the food. Wish they had some more off the beaten path items given the talent of the cooks. Had American Chinese all over USA and some tasty food in Shanghai for work last year. I have been coming to Chinatown in for decades today I ordered shrimp fried rice service was subpar. There were no utensils in the bag strike number 1 which led to strike number 2. Home is 25 minutes away so almost and hour back and forth. I arrive home 11 Miles 25 minutes later to find shrimp fried rice without eggs. Now I have to drive back 11 Miles 25 minutes and wait for them to do the order correctly strike #3 and now I have to return home 11 miles 25 minutes no compensation not even as much as an apology read more

I'm so glad this place is downtown! Downtown doesn't have a lot of variety when it comes to food and I'm glad there's a decent Chinese spot. Service and food is really fast and there was no wait on a Thursday night. The place is large and can handle large groups. We got the sweet and sour pork and the Szechuan chicken. It was pretty good! They came with rice and when you sit down, they also give you Chinese tea which is nostalgic for me. The staff interactions were somewhat harsh and aggressive during the entire visit. Service was very meh. The egg roll was very strange with huge long chunks of long hard stringy veg or bamboo inside. I asked for no MSG in my entree. I had one bite and felt a reaction and had to excuse myself. I could not complete the meal. I took the rest to go and ended up just throwing it away. Old sauces sitting on the table that did not look fresh instead of having fresh sauces served in ramekins. Sauce on the signature General Tso Chicken white meat was also just odd and not great. Chicken was tough and seasoning did not work for the dish not the sauce. All very strange. There was a positive note. My dining companions really loved the soup and the fried rice. Which it did look good. Yet, the whole vibe didn't work for me. I see they have alot of 5 star reviews so maybe this was just a one off experience. As many others seem to really like it there or maybe they just don't get out much and don't have anything better to compare it to. I have personally had way better quality and way better ambiance as well as way better more gracious hospitable service in many other cities around the world with Chinese Food. Ambiance is cool, very calm. Nice decor and all. Family owned, run and operated. The last piece of Chinatown they say. Definitely respect that. I lived here for 5.5 years and never knew about this restaurant until now that I'm visiting for a weekend. Staff is responsive and nice. Wonton soup has no filling. The broth tasted good and hit the spot (it's 30 degF outside) although a bit salty. But no filling? They're just thick noodles folded to look like there's something in them. I might have misinterpreted what I thought I was getting but Garlic Ginger Sea Scallops deviated from what I thought I understood it to be in the menu. Wanted something a bit lighter in flavor and while I did enjoy the spice, I don't think it was even marked as spicy on the menu. Definitely didn't expect it to be in a sort of tangy red brown sauce. As others have said, the complimentary tea was pretty nice! Did enjoy that. The volume of food for price is pretty good also. Average fare but good ambiance. Still annoyed about that noodle soup. Really like this place I will take pictures ext time. We enjoyed the food so much that I have picked up food to go twice and we wolfed it down Some notable dishes. If you like eggplant great dish, you pick your protein. We normally get the chicken and eggplant. The Mongolian beef is made with flank steak not the usual beef. We have had BBQ both time tender and tasty. Scallion pancakes, we fight over, the teriyaki chicken skewers also good, and the crab ragoons are a must try. We have not eaten in as this is near my office and on the way home, but nice inside and definitely a local place to try. Overall great solid Chinese food. If you are looking give em a try. Food is god awful terrible,, they use to be very good , but it seems like since 2023 they have really went down hill,,, egg rolls taste like a chemical taste, can't explain it, just terrible,, shrimp fried rice is so dry and I always ask for extra shrimp. Had a good meal there once.... I ordered Christmas Eve takeout for my elderly mother this year and we literally threw everything away. I couldn't find the meat in General Tsou's or the spicy chicken which was not even close to spicy. The dumplings were big piles of chewy dough. The crab rangoon was tough and had almost no filling. I called after the holidays to inform them that the meal was inedible. I was asked if I had pictures... They explained that they would have liked me to call Christmas Eve so they could have monitored quality control. I'm sorry, but it is not my job to help their quality control. In addition, I wasn't going to waste my Christmas Eve with my 88-year-old mother complaining about a meal. They will not offer restitution for the terrible meal, but I hope no one else experiences the worst food in the history of China at Chinatown Inn. read more

I've been looking for good Chinese takeout near my neighborhood for a while now and had total forgotten about Chinatown Inn! I was excited to try it again after so many years and it did not disappoint. I had the General Tso's bean curd and an egg roll. The items were delivered super fresh, hot, and delicious. The General Tso's was lighter than other versions I've had aka not as fried, which was great. The egg roll was twice the size of ones you get at most other places. I was desiring Chinese food and stopped by this place since it was fairly convenient to my hotel. I ordered sweet and sour chicken. They gave a very healthy portion which was greatly appreciated, but the food itself was just ok. My issue was the chicken and sauce all tasted pretty bland. I added soy sauce to give it a bit more flair but I usually don't need to doctor-up this dish to find it enjoyable.
