Stopped in for lunch opening week, party of 4, sat right away. Nice space, pretty big inside. Server very kind and attentive as was the owner who chatted with us throughout our meal. The carnitas were amazing, so tender and well seasoned. The tamales were great (really liked the sauce). One of my kids got the tacos and raved about them. We wanted some churros to go but they were still being hand made (we went shortly after opening). Next time. You could tell they were still getting into the swing of things being a new place. Tan tan rico!! I cannot believe how delicious the food was at Don Jose. We got the queso fundido, tacos pescados, and the birria tacos, and without exaggerating, all three were phenomenal. This place really stands out from other Mexican restaurants in the area and you can instantly tell their food is made fresh with care and of the highest quality. I will agree with most that the food has very little flavor. My wife and I both ordered Margs only to discover that the margaritas were tasteless and possibly watered down as well. Her salad was iceberg lettuce with a dollop of mole. Service was average and for 8:00 on a Friday night the restaurant was at 10% capacity. First and last time for me. The food was bland and unseasoned. Very tough overcooked chicken. Chips were perfect and crispy, but their salsa tasted like they mixed a can of marinara sauce with canned tomatoes and chiles and blended it up a bit. Very expensive for that low quality. read more

Absolutely delicious! I ordered the Pechuga con Papas & my wife ordered the Chicken Quesadilla Fajita. I also ordered the chocolate flan for dessert . this is also absolutely delicious. I ordered pick up although it would have been very nice to eat inside as I could see that it's a very nice looking restaurant. he said it would take 15 minutes and it was ready in 10 minutes. We have been there 5 times now and are going tonight and this coming Thursday. I find them to be accommodating and flexible about ingredient substitution as needed. The staff and owners are very kind and polite. We haven't had any of the issues complained of like cold food. Everything has been fresh and hot. They are not a typical taqueria; there are a lot of different choices on the menu. I personally love their mole sauce which is hard to find. La Mexicana makes it from time to time and it is wonderful, but here it's on the standard menu. Tonight was Quesabirria (#42) and Spinach Enchiladas (#1). When I can't decide I get #10. And, as usual, guacamole and spicy salsa. Can't strongly enough urge people to check them out. We stopped in recently, and I'll say that overall we enjoyed our visit. The food was good, the service was fine, and even though it's a really big restaurant, i think they do a nice job making you feel welcome. The staff was very attentive to drinks and chips and salsa, which is what you want in a Mexican restaurant. The menu had all your favorites on it, along with a few of their own items as well. I ordered the Que Me Vez Mixta. Think fajitas kind of. It was peppers and onion, chorizo, beef, chicken and al pastor topped with cheese sauce and served with charro beans and rice. The food was good. Everything was cooked right, it wasn't heavy despite all the meats, and I liked it. The only thing that keeps this place from a higher review is that it WAS a little bit pricey for what I felt you got. I usually pay about the same amount for fajitas at other restaurants and usually have a meals worth to take home, I didn't have enough left of this to justify taking it home. One of the other people with us got the street tacos, which, he said they were fine, he wishes he went with a different meat (he went al pastor), but he didn't know what that is, so I don't think there was anything wrong with it, just not to his taste, but it was a few dollars more than other places seem to charge for street tacos too. And the large cheese dip was about $7 but comparable in size to smaller cheese dips elsewhere. Anyways, not a bad experience, I would give them another try for sure, it was just pricier than expected when we decided to stop. read more

It was fresh with big chunks of white chicken, no juice that did not belong. It was not on the menu. Even the spinach was fresh. I ordered the guacamole as well. Umm. I also ordered a Que Me Vez Mixta. Oh my. So very good. The side sauce that you ad was delish. I hate Mexican restaurants that have runny vegetables and chicken over saturated in some sort of juice. Had high hopes for a Mexican restaurant located in the valley. Those hopes have been quickly dashed this evening. Was seated at 5:30 with a party of 7. our dinner order was taken at 6:04. We did not see food see until 7:10 pm. One order was missed completely and everyone's rice was not even lukewarm. They didn't not promptly get the missing meal and one of our party left at 7:40 pm. Ridiculous. The fajitas arrived and not sizzling and barely warm. Servers and kitchen were not prepared for opening week. The owner/mgr came to table with a slew of excuses on reasons for service failure. We watched 29 people walk out without being seated when there were many open tables. They were unprepared for a Friday night. Food was unseasoned and mediocre - at best. Requested bill and no-one came to collect. Service atrocious. Hopes for a great Mexican restaurant have been dashed in the valley. There is so much to fix for this brand new restaurant. They were very unprepared. One of the worst dining experiences of our life. I ate here tonight after a recommendation from one of my high school students. I had been craving an authentic quesadilla and I could not be more happy with the chicken quesadilla fajita I ordered. I brought a book to read while I ate, and I was so enamored with the food that I barely read more than page. My server was very attentive and always made sure I had everything I needed. The chocolate flan is to die for. If you have never had flan before, I cannot recommend this enough for a first experience. I plan to eat here again anytime I'm craving Mexican food (and probably even when I'm not just so that I can have more of the flan). 5 stars, no doubt. Everyone should try Don Jose! read more

Ordered 4 different dishes for sampling. I might as well ordered one. All were masa and meat (chicken or pork), ONLY, One had a little rice and a tablespoon of refried beans No chile spices, no mole, no cilantro, no sauteed onions and/or peppers, no alvacado, no mango, and NO CHEESE!!! (one dish had one tortilla that had been brushed with queso). How can you prepare TexMex with NO CHEESE??? The house margarita was $11 with no chips/salsa. Visiting from Texas we decided to try Don Jose's after my sister said they were newly opened. I must say that they suffer from "Akron Mexican Restaurant Syndrome" like many in Akron. The food is cooked right and looks good but is terribly bland. Where is the chili powder, cumin, garlic, cilantro, and jalapenos found in good mexican food? Even the mole was tasteless. It looked like it had dried chiles but you couldn't taste them. A good mole is a complex blend of 15 to 25 ingredients and is rich and flavorful. You also need to develop a good sour cream sauce which is another staple and was non-existent upon inquiry. I hope they don't think Akronites are afraid of spicy food. There are good Thai places that are spicy and popular so I know Akronites can take the heat and spice. Sorry guys, you'd never survive in Texas. Good staff, nice restaurant, and good music. C'mon Don Jose, spice it up! Buy some Mexican spices and herbs and use them. Your nicely cooked and good looking food would be much better. ¡Mas sabor, por favor y jalapenos asado a la parrilla! Hate giving a bad review but....first off, first impression not good as there were stickers over ALL of the prices with prices written on them. Looked ultra tacky especially when they opened just 6 months ago. And there were no instant chips and salsa typical of Mexican restaurants. Received them after about 10 minutes. Worst tortilla chips ever served! Tasted like cardboard, The salsa was ok. The place wasn't busy midweek midafternoon. We asked about specials and it was like pulling teeth. Happy hour was $1 off margs. No food specials. $1 off tacos for taco Tuesday. I got the lunch fajitas, It came with rice, beans, small salad. The rice and beans were remarkably oily. The fajitas were a small lunch portion and bland, The margs were $22 a pitcher, We asked if they had half pitchers and said yes, It was $20 when we got our bill and not worth finishing! Never left half of our margs, They were thin for frozen and overly sweet and salty. Hate to see restaurants fail but we will not be returning. read more
