Don Jose is a pretty solid choice for Mexican. There menu is extensive and interesting, comprising of your standard dishes and then a lot of stuff you don't see other places. For example, something I get frequently when I go is a dish called Grilled Alambres, which is basically fajita steak meats Philly cheese steak. Can't go wrong there! The drink menu is also large and good. My wife actually said she had the best dirty martini of all things there, so it's not just frozen margaritas. The restaurant used to be an incredible value, though the prices has risen, it is still definitely worth a try. Don't be deterred if there is a wait. We go at least once or twice a month and are always satisfied. I personally recommend the Tacos Don Jose. It comes with three tacos and the charro bean soup. I recommend trying one of each of the steak, carnitas, and my favorite, the Al pastor taco. read more

This restaurant used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the metairie Kenner area but the past few times the service hasn't been that great. I hate when I go to a restaurant and I have to ask multiple times for silverware or extra plates When service is good - the best thing to get are the fajitas! We love to get dips and split fajitas with the family. I've gotten the steak, chicken, and veggies fajitas and all are delicious. We've also gotten the pitcher of sangria here, it's pretty good and has tons of fruit in it, but when we got it there was no ladle To go with the ton of fruit with the Sangria. If the service was consistent and good this place would have five stars, but service is half of the battle when it comes to restaurants. read more

First off let me begin by saying I'm from Tucson so I should have known better. I would have given this place less than one star if it was possible. Husband order cheese enchilada dinner and I had the los amigos dinner. I don't know what type of cheese is used here but it isn't right. Tastes almost like white American cheese. The salsa that came with chips was ok but the chips were very bland and they obviously not homemade. The tortilla soup had fresh avocado but the broth tasted like it was made with a bullion cube as it was extra salty. The best part of the meal was the sweet tea which was excellent. read more

I had heard a lot of great things about this place from my Boss. So given the fact I was in Kenner I decided to check it out that day. The service was speedy and the server was nice. My only complaint was the fact that the waiter wasn't very fluent in English. It made the process of ordering rather tedious and somewhat difficult. The food was definitely on point. I had a chicken quesadilla with Spanish rice and refried beans. I most definitely loved that chicken quesadilla. The rice was okay but nothing really to brag about. The refried beans were good too. One thing I liked was the white queso dip with the chips when I first sat down. The decor in this place was nice. This place had a full bar and a really decent beer selection. The next time I come in here I might try some of their mixed drinks. In short great Mexican food, decent drink selection, but you may have difficulties communicating with the server. read more

I had been meaning to check this place out for a long time and finally made the pilgrimage to Kenner for it! My usual Mexican restaurants are Carreta's Grill (Metairie), Juan's Flying Burrito (Mid City), and of course, Superior Grill. But this place had some really positive reviews and great pictures of Fajitas and Chile Rellenos, which are my ultimate weaknesses. The restaurant is very clean and aesthetically pleasing, almost "upscale" by Mexican restaurant standards. I'm not sure what the whole aztec looking fountain is for in the back of the restaurant, but sure, I'll take it. We got the Medium Top Shelf Margaritas, one frozen and one on the rocks, and they were pretty good. The frozen margarita was definitely much sweeter than the one on the rocks so I prefer the one on the rocks personally. I would say their margaritas are slightly better than the ones at Carreta's Grill but definitely no where near as good as Superior Grill.... but then again...what is better than a Superior Grill Margarita? I mean ain't nobody can compete with that. We got my absolutely must-have order of Queso of course. I do like a good white quest and theirs was good but slightly more liquid than I'm used to. I like a nice creamy thick white queso but that's just me. We split the Steak Fajitas for one, a Cheese Chile Relleno, and a Pork Tamale. Now not to brag or anything, but I am sort of a Chile Relleno connoiseaur. It's sort of the thing I order at every Mexican restaurant that I use to judge their food. A good Mexican place will do it right and if the Chile Relleno is not good than it's usually a sure bet that the rest of their food isn't up to standard either. Well, I happen to really LOVE their Chile Relleno, which made me really excited to try everything else we ordered. It was just what it should be, a nice ranchero sauce with cheese on top, flaky on the outside, but hot with runny cheese on the inside, a good size, and with a spicy kick. And yes, it MUST be all those things to win my favor. The Fajitas for one are a HUGE portion and PLENTY for two people to split. I don't even know what the fajita plate for two could possibly look like. They give you TONS of meat and veggies on that skillet for two people! So I was really pleased with that because the fajitas are sort of my "thing." I'm not a huge Tamale person but I tasted it and enjoyed it and my dining companion who happens to really love tamales said it was one of the better ones he has ever had, so that has to be saying something. Overall our server Alfredo (odd name for a Latino man right?) was very a nice man, but not super friendly or anything, just nice. He just sort of just took our order and brought us our food and checked on us once or twice that was that. However, I have no complaints about the service. We did ask for hot sauce and as Bobby B. states, it is a house sauce concoction that is indeed not hot. Having said that, I think it was surely a flavorful sort of darker salsa, just not a spicy one. It did have a nice smokey flavor to it though. Alfredo said if we wanted a "hot" sauce that he could bring us some Tobasco Sauce, but I skipped that offer and just stuck with the house sauce instead. Bottom line: It's a great little Mexican spot but I don't think that it is SO amazingly above standard that I would drive out to Kenner often to become a real regular. I think my Carreta's Grill down the street is just as good food-wise even though it's certainly not as pretty as this place. However, if I find myself in the area, I would definitely come again! Service was ok but seriously dont nod your head when I ask about gluten free options and you have no clue what gluten free means. Thats cool if you dont know, just dont fake it and get someone sick. Quantity over quality seems to be the name of the game here. You can get a ton of food, and it's reasonably priced, but it's pretty solidly mediocre. I was really excited to try this place - I mean, I drove all the way out to Kenner for it - and was looking forward to a big ol' plate of Mexican food. Well, I definitely got that...the dishes are ENORMOUS. I ordered the vegetarian sampler, which includes a bean burrito, cheese chile relleno, cheese enchilada, and bean chalupa, plus beans and rice. Yeah, that's a heck of a lot of beans. And it was all kind of bland and not very exciting. I ended up dumping most of the table salsa on it to give it some pep. My meat-eating friend confirmed that his food was also on the "meh" side of things. Despite our entree experiences, we tried the sopapillas because really, how could I resist sopapillas when I know they're in my general vicinity? Sadly, they were probably the worst part of the meal - weirdly thick and heavy, with some viscous white sauce on top that was not very appetizing. The drinks were disappointing, too. I got the sangria and my friend got the margarita. Both, again, were gigantic, but VERY sweet and not strong at all. I should not be able to drink 900 oz. of sangria and feel sober as a toad. Overall takeaway: fine if you're looking for a place to fill up without spending a ton of money, especially if you have kids, but not an impressive meal. Nice to find some real Mexican food right by the airport - no American cheeses or other obviously 'Americanisms' on the menu. The most noticeable nod to those with no culinary adventurism is the 'Mexican chicken fingers', which we most certainly did not order. We ordered the tamale plate (3 pork tamales, each with a different sauce (red enchilada, white cheese, green tomatillo) + rice + beans), chimichanga plate, beef crispy taco, and taco plate. None of us finished our plates because the portions were big, all had to go boxes for home, making the $40 total check totally worth it. Good food, too! read more

Gone downhill. I was excited about going back to Don Jose's for a margarita and nachos while doing some work. Most of the booths have stuffing spilling out of the seat cushions. The chips and queso were good, but the guacamole was bland and listless. Adding lemon didn't help. I was so sad about the margarita. After a couple of sips I realized that the stuff around the rim was sugar. I asked the waiter if he would bring me another one, and he did ... bring me the same drink in a glass that had salt around the rim. Finally, it just wasn't very clean. I left about 15 minutes ago, and I still feel like there's a weird, icky smell around me. The place smelled so off that I didn't want to use the ladies' room. The waiter was sweet, and he tried, but there was too much ick to overcome. I left the margarita half full and most of the guacamole. The chips, however, were all gone. :) read more

Reviewing this place again because it is HANDS DOWN the best Tex Mex place in the Greater New Orleans area! I think I have probably visited every place from Kenner, to NOLA to Slidell, even the West Bank... And Don Jose's never lets me down. Not only is their food really top notch, the service is great/consistent, the place is always clean, the drinks are boozy but still taste great, and the price is unbeatable, no joke!!!! My fiancé and I eat here almost weekly, and the bill is usually about $35 for 2 drinks and 2 entrees and a side of queso with their amazing fresh in house salsa and chips! Their portion sizes are generous also. They are def not the typical average run of the mill order a enchilada plate and it has shitty rice and old beans smothered in cheese.... Like they put love into their food. I always get the steak quesadilla dinner and the rice and beans are great! Their rice actually has potatoes, peas, peppers and it's definitely made in house not pre-prepared! The only complaint I could say.... Is their tortilla soup could use improvement.... I prefer Velvet Cactus's over theirs or Casa Borrega's but that is about it. Small portions of meat, cooked to an average taste at EXTORTIONIST LEVEL PRICES. The business name should be 'Don Criminal'. While in town doing disaster work, I ordered for pickup. I asked for extra tortas and they extorted $3.00 from me for 3 small tortas. I was afraid to ask for extra napkins for fear they may be $1.00 each. When I got home and opened up the food... and was shocked... even frightened!!! because the old lady from the Wendy's commercial poked her head into my window and yelled "where's the beef". The amount of steak and chicken was... well.. to be kind, sparce. The food prep people must have worked at subway before Don Jose's Grill. There were enough onions in the dish for two servings but, since they don't give a reasonable portion of meat, they have to put something on the plate for $18.00. I figured, the taste was ok, it was nothing to write home about so, I gave them another try about three weeks after that. This time I dinned in, and sat at the bar. When my steak fajitas came, I had to use both forks to plow the piles of onions to the side like an excavator on the TV Show Gold Rush, I dug and sifted through the 'Over-Burdon' of onions and there!!! there it was!!! a piece of steak (I could hear the angels singing; what a moment! wow!). I kept digging... even though my arms were burning, I kept going and BANG! I found another piece of steak. I had to ask... I just had to ask... So, I said, excuse me please, is this a normal portion or had they possibly forgotten to put the steak into my steak fajitas. The server replied that they pre-measure the meat and that was a normal serving. Sooooo... being the wise ass New Yorker that I am, I asked if Ray Charles was doing the pre-measuring of the meat. She did not answer me. That must mean that they don't comment of the names of their staff. If you have too much money and need to get rid of some of it in exchange for average tasting food, you should get over to Don Jose's Grill because Don needs to sell another three or four plates of onions to pay off his new Mercedies. read more

Stopped in for dinner. Greeted promptly and were seated immediately. Overall the place appears to be clean but it didn't feel as clean as it looked. Table was not very clean and felt sticky. Restrooms were ok. Chips and salsa were good and keep you happy while waiting for your food. The food did show up quicker than expected. We shared a Nacho platter, 2 of us liked it and 2 did not care for it. The Chicken/steak/shrimp fajitas did not live up to expectations. Flavor was average at a above average price. The overall service was average. The shining light was the margaritas were great. I will give them another chance to see if they can live up to some of the other reviews I have read. read more

Came here for dinner. Saw the great reviews on Yelp! Was staying across the street at the DoubleTree Hotel. I would have normally eaten local Cajun food while in New Orleans, but my group was short on time. The parking lot was pack with cars on a Thursday night, which is always a good sign that you've picked a good restaurant. We ended up sitting at the bar to avoid any waiting time. Bottle beers were $3 for domestic and $3.75 for Mexican beers. Not bad prices. Bartender was friendly and quick to get out drinks. Complementary chips and salsa followed. Both were really good. I really liked how they brought out a craft and separate small bowls to enjoy your own salsa. Made it easier not to have to reach over. Order the Carne Asada. Came out on a fajita style hot plate with a ton of onions. A side plate with rice, refried beans, pico, sour cream, guacamole, lettuce, and tortillas. The meat and onions had a ton of flavor.
