We just arrived in the Kenner area to visit with my son and his family, and everyone was starved so we decided to give Don Jose's a try. It was lunch time on a Friday so we were able to try the Lunch Menu. We ordered a couple of Queso Appetizers, and the kids demolished that in no time. The salsa, chips, and queso were all excellent and fresh. The chips were homemade and not greasy like some places. It's a fairly large restaurant with plenty of parking. Once inside, we were greeted and seated immediately despite having a fairly large group. Staff were friendly and helpful. Between all of us we ordered the Chimi-Changa, Combination Plate, and the Chicken and Steak Fajitas. The lunch portions were still enormous, and food was brought home. Lunch with my wife. (yes we out together a lot) Today is Monday July 15, 2019 and we sat down to eat at 11:15AM. We were promptly greeted and seated in a booth. The booth and table were clean and the a/c was on cold. A fresh basket of warm chips and cold red salsa was delivered and we order our drinks immediately. I ordered my typical water with lemon and my wife had a lemonade with no ice. These are served in GIANT cups. I then ordered off the lunch menu and my wife off the regular menu. I had the lunch taco plate ($7.25) served with two crispy tacos along with rice and refried beans. My wife had the chicken mole' ($13.99) also with rice and two flour tortillas. Since she didn't even open the foil wrapper with the tortillas I cannot honestly comment on those. Let us just say this food was nothing out of the ordinary, served luke warm cooked properly. I like my mexican food steaming hot so this missed the bar by several orders of magnitude. The salsa lacked any body or flavor profile and was made as if to please the masses who don't know any better. Shall we say blah? The highlight was the service. Prompt, polite, and efficient. Very pleasant. The lunch plate was a pretty good value for the price but the chicken mole lacked the pizazz a $14 plate of mexican food should have. First of all , we frequent this restaurant three or four times a month, almost once a week on either Friday or Saturday. We have a usual group of between 5 and 15 people. Usually this restaurant has decent food and service. Well, last Saturday 6/5/21, I ordered Steak and Shrimp, medium rare. What they brought was a well done steak (hockey puck style) and overcooked inedible shrimp. I made our waiter aware and he said he would take care of it. So he cleared my plate and all the other diners at our table. We were ready to go. The restaurant was almost empty, closing and a young lady walked up and said they could cook me another steak. I said it was not necessary as long as they took the dinner off my bill. Well, they charged me. So I paid it. Like I said, we come her almost every week. You would think that might mean something. Not here I guess. I'm not going to say we won't ever come here again, but I will say it will be a long time. (at least a year) They have another Mexican restaurant further down Vets. We started with the Mexican starter appetizer that had a little bit of everything. Then as entrees, we had the carne asada and the carnitas (both served with grilled onions). Each plate comes with tortilla, beans, lettuce, tomato and guacamole. I also ordered the premium medium margarita. The margaritas are HUGE. A medium could easily be a large. Salsa was tasty and mild enough for my kiddo to enjoy. We got the spicy mango margarita and the coconut lime margarita. Both were tasty, but the spicy mango comes with a seasoning coated straw (tajin I think?) that was a bit too much. The seasoning being on the rim was great, though, the writing on top was just a neat little touch. Carnitas were fall apart tender, my partner really enjoyed them.
