Don Jose's Mexican Restaurant at Homer AK is the worst place to go, the service is the worst and the food is really bad

We ate there two times. We had business in Homer. Each time we were greeted promptly. The staff was lovely. Our food was excellent. The salsa was turning bubbly though. The waitress agreed and took it away. The flan is to die for. The best I have had in a long, long time. The Arroz con Pollo was excellent. My husband had tamale and enchilada combo plate. It was excellent. The decor was very nice. Did not use the bathrooms which are the real test. Clean enough. However, the mouse trap under the adjacent booth was disheartening. Granted, those things do happen. It was brought to the attention of our waitress, who was grossed out. I suggested that the trap be removed during business hours. That is why only four points. I had a good chicken taco. That's about the only order they got right. My mom's tamale was dry and cold. The service was very friendly, and my server was apologetic when she goofed up my order (wrong enchilada). But the kitchen was really slow, did make their own goofs, and it seemed like the B-team was on duty that night. Good Margarita, though. Perhaps this is a good place for drinks. But there are better Mexican places in Alaska. read more

Wow, this was some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. We ended up here after a work week and all were starving, and when a co-worker suggested it I was skeptical because I find Mexican in Alaska very hit or miss. But we were steered toward a special by the server (very charming woman who spoke heavily Spanish-accented English), a meat-heavy dish called Molcatajete--a heavy stone pot layered with rich tomato-spicy broth at the bottom, a layer of melted cheese, pork, beef and chicken chunks, and Poblano peppers. It seemed like something you'd get from a tucked away place in rural Central Mexico or something, not American Tex-Mex. Unlike anything I've had before and it was out of this world! Comes with a huge plate of refried beans & rice, avocado, sour cream and salsa, plus tortillas. It was a huge meal even for someone who was starving. I'd go back for that dish! Also, the Cadillac margarita was good, and huge, and the chips/salsa were free and seemed homemade. Overall, a delightful surprise. read more

We were completely shocked by the authenticity AND delicious food. Who knew you had to travel to Alaska to get such good Latin Food!

Waited 25 minutes for a table even though there were 6 tables within eyesight that were empty plus some empty booths in the next room. Food was OK but not worth the long wait. read more

Had been warned about eating here, but figured what the heck~ and gave it a try. Such a mistake... dirty, poor service, still-frozen burrito, and that was the good part. So sorry, but will not return. Could spend less at the grocery store and get better, including the salsa. read more
