I usually do not like to provide bad reviews but I am compelled to try and help someone else from having my bad experience. We thought that being in Alaska and close to fresh fish would make it ideal for eating good Sushi but we were wrong. The view is awesome, the atmosphere inside is nice. The service staff was friendly. This is what gives this restaurant the 1 star. When it came to sushi, I do not know if a negative star would even give it justice. They should not serve sushi at this place. The sushi you get from Safeway tastes better. The taste was bland. Every roll almost tasted the same and had no flavor. The texture of the sushi in your mouth did not feel right either. We ordered a rainbow roll, an Alaska roll and a third roll that I forget the name. The sushi looked wilted. My wife and I ate 3 pieces and we could not eat any additional bites. The waitress asked us what's wrong and we told her it did not taste right or fresh. She did not offer anything to rectify the situation or make it right or talk to the manager. Seems like they are used to it. We paid for the sushi and left. Stay away from this place. read more

Visited Wasabi on a Thursday at about 5pm, they now require reservations so be sure to call already! Anyway, we were unaware of the new changes so we walked in but they were able to seat us which was amazing. They have spaced out all of the tables and have limited the capacity. All servers are wearing masks and I think I saw some with gloves. We came wanting sushi so we were happy to be able to eat inside. They also have a patio that has an amazing view of the mountains. Anyway, we ordered the Duck Pizza and the Alaska roll. We had our waters filled right away but the next time took a out 30 minutes even after we had drained our cups about 5 minutes after receiving it but it wasn't a deal breaker. But, the service was definitely slow. I could tell a lot of to-go or delivery orders were taking place but because my brother and I had nowhere else to be, it wasn't a big deal. Our pizza arrived after 30-40 minutes, piping hot and out of the oven. DO NOT SKIP THIS PIZZA. IT'S A WORK OF ART. This could easily fill one person, or two if you aren't that hungry. But this is hands down without a doubt the best pizza I've ever had. Read the menu for the full details but it has fig reduction, havarti and gryuere cheese, roasted garlic and onions, the duck bacon and more. If nothing else, just get it to take a picture with. Our sushi in total was probably an hour after we ordered but there was only one sushi chef working at the time and will all of the to-go orders including many many sushi rolls, he was extremely busy. Once the roll was done he even ran it over to our table. Sir, if you're reading this, your sushi is art and I am so glad to have tried it. Thank you for working so hard. Anyway, the roll was filled with crab and had salmon so fresh it was practically swimming. These rolls were a little bigger than what I'm used to, but still good! It started off so good and just plummeted after the appetizers. We ordered all the vegetarian-friendly rolls in consideration of our company but none of us could get over the pungency of the seaweed salad. No amount of water and tougue-scraping could rid us of the taste long enough to enjoy the items without the seaweed salad. Wasabi's is a hidden gem of Homer. If you have a chance make sure to go! It's off the spit and away from the typical tourist spots but the food is exceptional-- range of options, beautiful presentation, large portions, and absolutely delicious-- and all with a lovely view! Their menu is a little limited right now but they have a wonderful range of options and every single thing we ate was delicious. Halibut dip was delicious and a little spicy with plenty to share for the table of four. The curry was delicious and flavorful with perfectly fried fish and plantains that made the dish. Bison was well done and flavorful. Thai ribs were a surprise standout (we live in Alabama, who goes to Alaska to eat ribs, especially when there are good ones back home? Apparently we do). Tender and deliciously smothered with a Thai peanut sauce. The slaw was good and the Mac and cheese wholly unnecessary because of how good everything else was, but the Mac was decadent and incredible! The seafood stew was a standout. Huge amounts of crab in the stew and lots of flavor in the sauce. Huge portions of everything we had to skip desert. If you're in Homer, make sure to check it out! read more

Visited Homer on 9/11 from Soldotna to see a show at the High School for Homer's Alaska World Arts Festival (we saw QUIXOTIC Cirque Nouveau, which was very well done!). Decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner before and, based on the menu alone, decided to try Wasabi's Bistro. Firstly, I read a lot of reviews before posting this and while I came away scratching my head at a few, overall I think they were spot on. The service is not fast, alright it was actually kind of slow, but their peak season is over and they only had a skeleton crew. People NEED to understand this! We sat next to a table of ladies who ordered extensively from the bar (Mojito's and Martini's) and appetizer menu and they seemed VERY happy with everything. We only ordered from the entrée menu and were extremely delighted with both of our plates (Seafood Fettucine and Mac N' Cheese). I had the Seafood Fettucine and it had copious, and I mean COPIOUS, amounts of seafood served over fettucine that was perfectly al dente and a sauce that was somewhat spicy (probably due to the chorizo) but not overpowering. The Mac N' Cheese was not what your Mama made you... it had no less than 8 large scallops and had a nice crusty top thanks to a Panko bread crumb and three-cheese topping that were put under a broiler, not unlike a good French Onion Soup. Some reviewers complained about the plating being hot, which is true, but we were warned when they put in on the table and now you are too. Both of our entree's were excellent. We have been in other "fine" restaurants where they served a similar Mac N' Cheese, for the same price mind you, and had ALOT less seafood plated. The same thing can be said of the Seafood Fettucine; there is a lot of seafood served with this dish. And this is Alaska people, where you pay more for just about EVERYTHING. For the price and quality, not to mention exquisite views of the Bay, you would be hard-pressed to find a more satisfying dinner. For those people who have a problem with the wait staff being slow, do yourself a favor, call ahead, and see if they will have problems accommodating your group. read more

We came for a relaxing off-season dinner. My friend had a Korbel sparkling wine and I had an excellent cold Hakatsuru Junmai Draft Sake to start our dining experience. This sake is the best and smoothest that I have found in a restaurant on the Kenai Peninsula. Both of us enjoy taking the time to savor drinks before starting to eat. We had Tempura Prawn Appetizer, and Unagi and Hamachi sushi as appetizers. My friend enjoyed the Tempura appetizer so much, that it was ordered as her entree. I had the Seafood Chowder with a side bowl of white rice (extra charge). The chowder had a thick tasty base similar to a cioppino, full of mussels, clams, fish and half a dungeness crab. Wonderful flavors. I could have used a lemon scented wipe (none offered) after the meal, I used my hands to get all the good bits out of the crab. A delicious dessert of mango tort and ice cream was shared. It was a very enjoyable, long dining experience. One important word of advice: always call to check their hours of service before you go over. I've been disappointed in the past with going to Wasabi's on one of their Off evenings. read more

Sushi, seafood and steak, lots of local ingredients (which means fresh!) Everthing on the menu is heavenly. If you have any tastebuds in your mouth and are tired of squandering them at other establishments, I recommend you waste no time in going to Wasabi's! Linger, get dessert. I went here for the first time recently at the recommendations of others, saying it was 'the best food in Homer'. I disagree. There are a number of reasons why I'd give this such a low rating. For one, the price is definitely not comensurate with the quality, quantity, or creativity of the food, although a couple of items, like boar, you don't see too often in AK. The menu, and specials offer a good array of local seafood or other meat options. So the details. I heard it had a nice view, that might be true if you get a window seat, in the summer. In the off season, they cover their windows with a vinyl film that blurrs or distorts the view, and even kind of gave me a headache trying to look through it, so I averted my eyes. Overall, the ambience, is somewhat dark and dingy, not very enlightening. I ordered the halibut special which came with a vegetable/butternut squash 'hash' (spinach, squash, carrots, potatoes incl some blues). The halibut was cooked perfectly, which can be hard to do if your not on it. The vegetable/hash was good, somewhat interesting flavor-wise good texture mix, but nothing really special. There was a sauce, and it was somewhat flavorful, creamy-buttery, plating was attractive, but nothing sensational. In fairness, probably don't want overwhelm halibut with sauce. My friend had the chicken, which was very similiar to the halibut pretty much the same dish, just chicken instead of halibut, different shaped dish (probably so the servers know which is which, cause they look nearly identical!) And there's no bread!! NO fricking warm crusty artisan bread to wet the appetite or to compliment the dinner? Major deduction. An insult really. The wine by the glass list is mediocre, mostly large volume middle of road wines and about 1-3 dollars per glass more than normal. Much more intriguing wine list can be found at Fat Olives or Cups. In the end, the bill with tip ends up about $60 per person, but I'm just not sure what I'm paying for here.Overall the food was good but no bread with dinner, come on, I hope this this not a new trend!? That and the price alone will keep me out of this place in the future. Service was ok, but not great, waitress could have followed up a bit better. My biggest complaint about this place aside from the absences of bread, and not being totally wowed by the food or menu, is that you pay ~$30+ for an entree and the closest thing to a dinner salad is another $8, that even for an iceburg wedge (iceburg wedge? :((!). The lowest cost entree was Udon noodles no meat for $25. Appetizers too were quite expensive $9-$16) and not hugely interesting. So had a miso soup, which was as tasty, as miso soup can be. I've had better flavor, experience and, service at half that cost. I can easily see why some reveiws are poor. I don't mind spending that kind of money when its deserved. This is not a place that I will make a concerted effort to go back to, but would like to try their sushi. read more

Everything except the sushi was great. Beautiful views and good service and the potstickers were tasty. Sushi left much to be desired. We had the crunchy Philly roll, caterpillar, and three types of nigiri - halibut, salmon, and fresh water eel. Presentation was great. The caterpillar roll actually has two antennae and eyes. Pretty cute. The taste was not so great. The sushi rice was not seasoned at all, too soggy, and there was way too much of it, which detracted from the fish. Not that the fish was anything special anyway. I've had fresher tasting fish and Homer is the halibut capital of the world. Perhaps the person prepping the sushi that night was inexperienced? Or perhaps this is why a lot of the rolls on the menu featured cooked fish or meat? This is unfortunate since the rolls are fairly pricey. The entrees on the other table looked fabulous though - rack of lamb and steak. Money would probably be better spent on the other items on the menu. read more

Fantastic food... I've gone here many, many times and have never been disappointed one bit! The view is amazing if you're lucky enough to get a table by the window (just request it when you make your reservation). The service can be hit or miss depending on who you get, but that's really my only complaint. If you're not looking to spend $25-30 an entree, they have a wide variety of sushi rolls which are on the more affordable side & just as delicious. Besides being a frequent diner here, I also booked my wedding rehearsal dinner here. The owner went out of her way to accommodate my wishes for the rehearsal dinner and all of my guests were so pleased with the food, the view and the atmosphere. As for the review that says that the locals don't go here - you couldn't be more wrong! Many locals frequent this restaurant, myself included. It's busy in here at the height of the tourist season & just as busy in the dead of winter when only locals are in the area. read more

All there food looks very tasty, and from the food I've tried, taste good as well. There sushi is pretty decorative and great for couples or to share in a group. But my complaint isn't really in the food. The service for the price was definitely not up to par. We waited quiet a while just to put in our order. Once taken, our appetizers took forever just to get to us. Feeling hungry we finished that in no time, than came the wait for our entrée. I was absolutely pleased with my experience at Wasabi's! I am also very perplexed at all the negative reviews I've read and I'm convinced that all the naysayers have congregated here. The server was attentive, the view and vibe are wonderful, but the very BEST of it all was the FOOD! We ordered these things: The Salmon Shark- my first time eating what most people in Homer seem to think isn't good eating. But I heartily approve. The polenta cakes that came with were 100% divine, warm, crispy. A total comfort food. and The Duck- each tender slice was cooked to perfection. INCREDIBLY TENDER! Not to mention the SAUCES that came with each dish. All I can say is WOW, what a combination!!!!! In speaking to the server, we were suprised to find that Wasabi's has not gotten the best of reviews online, so I am here to represent all the people who have had FABULOUS experiences here. The sushi was prepared with care and plated very nicely. They even made a rose with a leaf with the wassibi and ginger. I had the rockfish special. It was very good. This is not ur typical Japanese restaurant. Its fusion. So if ur looking for a traditional Japanese meal this is not for u. But overall this is a very nice place to eat at during ur visit to Homer. Wasabi's is excellent! We went there again tonight and just enjoyed 2 amazing steaks. I had the filet topped with crab. It was melt in your mouth tender, the sauce was smooth like silk and the potatoes were perfect. My husband had the ribeye. The sauce on his steak was sweet and savory and awesome on the mashed potatoes. We started with a couple of rolls and tuna. YUMMY! The food here is consistently delicious. I have a complicated relationship with this place. I wish I could select every button in the "What sort of visit was this?" category... I own a event business and I do events here frequently. I come here with my wife for dates, groups for business, family for birthdays. I have NEVER had any of the poor experiences that everyone LOVES spewing their filth about. Let's dive right in... Total honesty from me. I almost exclusively get the Sushi when I go there. I've had some of the other stuff, but we will get to that. Their sushi is amazing. There is a large variety of choices when it comes to the rolls and the ingredients. Colt and his sushi crew do an amazing job making it. He is extremely knowledgeable on the different kinds and the history and art of rolling sushi. Just ask him sometime! I've had some of their other seafood options and have never had a BAD experience. The food is creative and beautiful. My issue with it was consistency. The quality and arrangement is different every time. NEVER BAD! ...just inconsistent. The inconsistency makes sense; they have gone through several cooks/chefs since I started going there. The service can be a bit inconsistent as well. Like most places in Homer, they go through several employees a year. That being said, I've NEVER had a bad experience with their service. Overall, their food and service is great! I recommend it for business meetings and date nights. The atmosphere is appealing, it's clean and has a GREAT view. The food is sophisticated and creative. I can tell Dali and Colt try hard to make Wasabi's the best it can be. Don't listen to the haters. Pro-tips---- -If you have loud/energetic kids, get a babysitter. This is a quiet restaurant. Screaming kids should go somewhere more casual. -Given the overall complexity of the food, don't expect to be in and out in an hour. Clear your evening. -Get reservations. The wait staff was helpful and very attentive and kind. It was my birthday, and we were there early (5:30) so easily got a seat. It wasn't very full. They have a nice selection of draft beers, though they need another local IPA in there. The muscovy duck was cooked to a perfect medium rare, with delicious sides and an amazing blueberry reduction. My NY steak was also incredible, and the crisp potatoes and fresh (in December) asparagus was wonderful. Also, that piece of chocolate cake to go was covered with a delicious caramel sauce and a piece of dark chocolate on top. Over all, very good on service and food. I was so happy, because we had gone here a few years ago on Valentine's day, and neither was that great - I think they had been overwhelmed with the amounts of customers.
