Well they lost two stars ... used to be 4 stars, but dropped to 2 stars. On our visit this trip to Charlotte everything at Don Pedro's was a bit off. While the margaritas still tasted of no tequila, this time they also were so tart as to be undrinkable. In fact, my SO and I each had one ... one frozen and one traditional ... and neither of us finished our drink. So, one big strike. My ground beef quesedilla was 3 star fine, but my wife's taco salad was a 1 star bust. She ordered her salad with 1,000 Island dressing ... and when the waiter brought our food he just plopped her salad in front of her and said we are out of 1,000 Island, and the only other thing we have is Ranch, which she didn't have a taste for. Now, you'd think the server would have come by before serving us anything to give us a chance to order something else ... but no. Here's your salad and we only have one dressing, so you have to eat it dry if that doesn't suit you. Big fail, and strike two. On other fronts, the little dollop of quac that came on the quesedilla had something awfully hot in it, so we left it ... but the chips and salsa were very good ... the hit of the night. We don't know if the kitchen was just off or we had a nonchalant waiter ... but with all the other Mexican Restaurants around, I don't think we'll be back to this particular Don Pedro. read more

Went here for dinner Friday around 4:30 PM, weren't many people inside at this time, so no wait. We were immediately served chips and salsa upon being sat down. Waiter was attentive and communicative about menu items. I really appreciated the quickness in our chips and salsa being replenished at our table without us even having to ask for more (10/10). Cute Christmas decor was in the entrance as well as a grass wall and light up sign. Since it was Friday, they had their margarita special going on, so I decided to try one of their drinks with my dinner (10/10) small glass, but mighty! The flavor was really good; believe I chose raspberry flavor. It was very strong and gave a great buzz. To eat, I decided to try the Combo Azteca (10/10). Steak, garlic prawns, rice and beans, and tortillas on the side. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Loved the flavors of everything together. Very delicious! We love Don Pedro's!!!! I love the vibes and decor inside, definitely feels like an authentic Mexican restaraunt. They are quick to bring out chips and salsa and the salsa is so good. The menu says after the first basket of chips, each additional biscuit is $3, but we've never been charged. They have a bar with lots of drink options and you can even get a drink to go. The food is a little pricy (almost $20 for most meals) and ($11-$15 for burritos) but it comes with a TON of food and has always been enough for multiple meals for us. The food is sooooo good, we've never gotten anything we don't like!!! And the ACP comes with tortillas which was new and fun!!!! They do reserve the kids menu for kids. Never the less I would return to get my mexican food fix. We ordered guacamole which was made table side. Fresh guac but had zero seasoning/salt. We added our own salt and it was good. Fresh w a hint of lime. I ordered the Molcajete and it was huge!!! Typical Presentation in a piping hot lava rock bowl. Chorizo, carne asada, pollo, camerones, fried cheese, cactus and a side of beans. Chicken was good but not the typical Pollo Asado flavor, steak was deliciously simple and tender!!! The shrimp were over cooked and lacked flavor. The service was fantastic. Constantly refilled our chips and salsa. Even brought us a spicy salsa. The interior was like traditional mexican restaurants in San Diego. Their dessert were not the best. Found out they do not make their own desserts in house. In Charolette Don Pedro is likely a 5 star mexican food restaurant. In San Diego which I use as my barometer for rating mexican restaurants. We haven't been here in a few months so I'm not sure if there is a new manager but they have implemented some great changes. Ambience-wise, the lighting is better and they have a great video board showing menu options, drink specials, dinner specials etc. One thing that popped up was the birria pizza and I knew I had to order it. Talk about a prefect fusion of favorites. My husband and I are foodies so we can be picky. I took one bite of the birria pizza, closed my eyes and groaned. Sooooooo good. It's new on the menu and I will be getting it again. And again. And again. As usual, our server was friendly, charming and really helpful. The chips were deliciously hot when they brought them to the table. Drinks and food came quick but perfectly prepared. We've been coming here for years because we find it consistent and satisfying. We dined here on a Friday night to support a friend who was participating in a comedy show. Despite having a reservation, there was some difficulty in seating us with the rest of our group. However, they were up adding extra tables and chairs to the group to accommodate us. Service was a bit slow, which is unusual for a Mexican restaurant. We had to ask for more chips and salsa to accommodate the larger party size. However,the chips were hard and did not taste fresh. When we requested more, the newer batch tasted the same, just warmer. I was addicted to a certain dish I ordered at a restaurant in Winston, but unfortunately didn't see anything similar on the menu. I showed a picture to our waiter Alejandra and she knew exactly what it was! Fajitas Fundita - Texana. Don Pedro, you should 100% put this back on your menu, it is fantastic! Chicken, steak, shrimp & veggies over rice smothered in queso. It's kind of like Texas ACP. The steak and shrimp were seasoned perfectly and weren't chewy at all. The queso had so much flavor! We also ordered a large guac that they make tableside and it was really fresh and also packed with flavor. The skinny margarita was light and refreshing. The salsa could have had more flavor but it's fine. I also noticed the prices are a little high, but the portions are HUGE so you get a lot for your money. I was surprised that Don Pedro didn't offer any specials on a Tuesday. We were hoping for a Taco Tuesday special of some sort, or maybe a drink special. The first time I had lunch at Don Pedro the food was good. I've been back twice since and both times the service was horrible and the food was not good. The wait time was outlandish! I was late going back to work. I asked for Dr. Pepper and it tasted as if it had been sitting for days. It was flat as the road on which I drive! The Cheese Dip with jalapeños had just enough kick. I ordered a taco meal with rice and it was yummy yummy. The lettuce, cheese and tomato were all very fresh. I was impressed. My husband had an enchilada & taco with rice and beans. His plate was clean. When they brought our Check we got a complimentary dessert with it that had honey, cinnamon and sugar with whip cream and a strawberry purée. I would go back just for that. I visited here for dinner while on vacation with my family. My family members and I ordered bean/cheese enchiladas (#14) and basic nachos. My sister found a long piece of hair in her rice so her potion of the meal was untouchable. The portion sizes of the enchiladas are too small and overall the food was nothing special. Got into town tonight at 10pm thanksgiving eve. Long drive left me starving. EVERYTHING closes before 10.....whyyyy?? I took a chance and ordered through Seamless. I ordered the skirt steak with the butterfly prawns. It was ready in 20. When I tell you the steak was perfectly grilled and juicy and the prawns were so fresh you better believe me. 2 of us went to Don Pedro on Friday night...first time and will be last time. Therefore at least 6 staff on the floor. There were around 7 tables in use. We ordered 2 meals...one was very simple chicken sandwich....other was burrito.....others in restaurant ordered after us....then we watched as others got their food before us.....then my burrito was brought out and was told sandwich would be brought out ....5 minutes of wziting...my food got cold since I did not want to be rude and est in front of other waiting for food......people who got their food before us were leaving when finally our chicken sandwich was brought out....my food is now cold......was told that staff make a hamburger verses a chicken sandwich so that is why it took to long....thos is ladt time I will ever go to this site...poor customer service read more

I can't believe that I haven't written a review... It seems impossible. I have been going there for 20 years, I received the most incredible service... The food is consistently incredible. Especially the salsa! I have spent 20 years asking them on my birthday, Christmas, and any random holiday I can find if they will please gift me the salsa recipe... To no avail. I think they like seeing me at least once a week. Even through all my travels through south and Central America Don Pedro's remains my absolute favorite and I look forward to when I land in Charlotte so I can head straight there. I highly recommend the draft Modelo, the Dos amigos (just like Pollo con Crema, but with chicken and shrimp). I'm warning you once you try this salsa you will be addicted. Also, it is so cozy. I passed over the guacamole appetizer as I thought $8.50 was quite expensive for one avocado as listed. I enjoyed my deluxe taco bowl salad filled with plentiful chicken, priced more than a regular taco bowl salad because guacamole and sour cream were included. I got a skimpy teaspoon of guacamole and about a tablespoon of sour cream. My dining mates burrito was great, a good portion and plated nicely. I will say the decor seems a bit old but that may just be because it's the style , I really don't know but it seems like it could use an update . I ordered the vegetarian burrito and it was terrible . I mean I couldn't taste much past the cheese and I asked for light cheese. My mom had something with steak and her meal was not even hot. The ceviche was the best part however it took around 25 minutes to get the ceviche. Plus the shrimp was deveined. My drink order was water. Here's what happens: My glass was broken in 2 places. The tacos were over salted - couldn't even eat it. The beans and rice were good. So I ate beans & rice with nothing to drink cause the waitress never came to check on me. When she finally showed up I explained the situation. I paid for beans and rice . 3.5 stars! Went to visit the boyfriend's kids for Christmas and New Year's. This was their choice for a meal. My boyfriend and his kids have been here many times and absolutely enjoys the food here. We were quickly seated as this place is pretty big with lots of seating. The waiter was very friendly and courteous. He took our drink orders and soon our food choices. The chips are salsa here is pretty good. Fresh tortilla chips and salsa was flavorful enough. I just wish it was a bit spicier. (I love all things spicy). Once our order was taken it didn't take long for us to get our food. I ordered the trio platter. Came with asada, fish and grilled chicken. It was good. The asada was slightly overcooked but I still enjoyed my meal. Price is pretty reasonable and good size portions. This place is right next to the Carolina Place mall and such a hidden gem. I've driven past it dozens of times before I stopped in with my company for lunch one day. This has become one of my favorite places. They make the guacamole fresh right in front of you and the refried beans are authentic as is everything on the menu. I was ready for something different. This place had a whole fish fried. Being a seafood lover, I just had to try. I couldn't figure out the name of the fish because the name of the dish was in Spanish. They had two menus and one of the menus had only photos and Spanish name and the price. I really loved coming here but never again. I always go for dinner but decided today I would get lunch which was a mistake. I ordered the ACP and only got a handful of food. I couldn't talk to a manager and was told this was lunch portion size but this was over $10. If they wanted it to seem like more food maybe you should put it in a smaller container. Don Pedro used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Charlotte. My last visit was not good, however. I should have known it was going to be bad when our waiter took our drink order then disappeared for a while. He also disappeared for a while a couple of other times. They were not that busy so I'm not sure where he disappeared to. The chips were warm but the salsas they brought were uninspiring. I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas and my friend ordered carnitas authentic tacos. My food was lukewarm at best and the shredded beef (picadillo) was very tough to the point that I had trouble eating it with just a fork. I informed my waiter that the food was cold. He looked at me and asked me what I wanted to do. I replied that "I want hot food." My friend's tacos were not good either. The Carnitas didn't have as much flavor as I expected and didn't have the crunch of nicely done Carnitas either. We ordered margaritas with our meal. The standard margarita was OK but wasn't cheap at more than eight dollars each. The top shelf margarita tasted like it didn't have any sour mix in it so it was way too sweet! The waiter said it was because of the Grand Marnier. I've had margaritas with Grand Marnier plenty of times and they were good. This one was not. Instead of sending it back we ordered another standard margarita and mixed the two which made it much better. I've always enjoyed going to Don Pedro in the past but after this visit I most likely will not ever go back again. I wonder what happened to them? Maybe a change in ownership/management? read more
