I visited Don Pepe's for lunch recently while being in the area. They have a special lunch menu and from it I ordered the chicken fajitas for just $13. I asked for corn tortillas and charro beans which came with the meal. First to arrive was the complimentary chips and salsa. I enjoyed their taste (4). The sizzling platter arrived a few minutes later with grilled onions and chicken on it. Included were some delicious charro beans, guac, pico de gallo and rice. I enjoyed this meal (4). At $13 it was a real deal but the meat portion was smaller than the more expensive dinner option along with only getting 2 tortillas. Finally the table service was very good too. I have been here a couple of times. I try to eat local. The food is good, but portions usually run small compared to other local eateries. Service is good and welcoming. The restaurant is well kept and the decor is nice. On this visit, I tried something different: caldo de pollo. It lacked vegetables and as you can see in the pic it was more broth than veggies. A positive is the chicken was chicken breast and no drumsticks as it is served in other places. If the caldo had more veggies(cabbage, potatoes and corn) I think it would be great! Looking forward to another visit and trying something else off the menu. I recommend this place. Their fajitas are a good quality. read more

Tried this place because I was looking for a place that served chalupas. I ordered delivery and the chalupas were were sitting in a pool of grease from the ground beef I added. They were awful. I tried to eat one and threw thr other away. The ground beef had a funny flavor as well. read more

So this is mostly a to-go review. I'm really, really happy we found this little gem! We called about 45 minutes before they closed to order the street tacos & birria tacos because the pupusa place up the road was already about to close. We were worried about how long it would take since it was within last hour of closing.(We've had poor experiences even for "quick" to-go orders like that.) The gentleman who answered the phone & took our order was said "it would take about 5-10 minutes, was that okay? Or would we need more time?" We were slightly in shock, at the speed & asked is 15 minutes okay? He said yes, got our name, that was it. We needed to pick up my kids curbside food from up the street at Chick-fil-A by a certain time. When we went in to get the food it was pretty empty besides a couple of guys watching the game, which explained the 5-10 min quote. (On a Thursday night. I know it be jumping during fridays/weekends from always driving by.) They really were speedy with our order!! And it didn't harm the food flavor. I love, love, love my birria tacos. Idk if the beans had pork in it but they sure smelt good. My husband tore those & his fajita street tacos up. I tasted a small piece of his, no complaints either. It may may sound weird but I really, really liked there pickled onions. Their chips & salsa are good, too. I didn't go to bathroom, so idk about that area. I loved my meal at Don Pepe's. Great friendly service. Very good Tex-Mex. One thing I really liked about their tortilla is that it was so fresh and they char it a little (all Mexican restaurants I've been to give soft flour tortillas, not textured like this). My El Pepito came with steak, chicken, and shrimp. I can tell they cook with love and care because each meat came out perfect, not overcooked at all. My happy hour margarita was such a great deal. I regretted not getting the 20 oz size instead... but it's not fun drinking margarita alone so maybe next time I'll have the larger size when I go back with friends. Restaurant was clean. The salsa was more like sauteed and mashed tomatoes, YUCK. Their "queso" wasn't queso. It reminded us more of melted Velveeta, no spice whatsoever and it was very thick, YUCK. The tortillas for our flautas and enchiladas were thin. The refried beans were gross. The chicken in our dishes were dry, gritty and very tough to cut with a knife. Took my wife out for breakfast Valentines. Service started out good. I order medium rare fajitas and sunny side up eggs. Fajita came out Medium well and over easy eggs. I was given flour tortillas but never asked which kind I wanted. So I requested corn tortillas at which the waitress Sonia gave an attitude for ordering them and asking for more coffee. The corn tortillas were hard and not fresh. My wife ordered the fajita chilaquiles and the fajita was not fresh either. It looked and tasted overcooked like it was reheated. Having said this, I've been here before and the food has always been hit or miss but the service was better. I think this was their last chance. Won't be back. read more

I've been here a couple of times and I'm not sure why more people don't go. It is definitely not the best Mexican restaurant I've been to but food is decent, place is clean and service is good. I've been to breakfast here a couple of times and like most Mexican restaurants the coffee is not great. The breakfast selection is good and you can get all your traditional favorites like menudo, barbacoa, etc. I liked that my waiter allowed me to order something that wasn't on the menu. In addition, all food came out hot but for me at least, I don't like my over easy eggs to have that crusty outline around your eggs that you get at some restaurants. Tortillas were good, but again not the best. I've had their eggs over enchilada platter and that was really good. Overall, this restaurant is a decent pick for having a Mexican breakfast. My family went here for my birthday based on the good reviews. I was pretty disappointed. Service was good but the margaritas and food were below average. It was edible but just not good. I think my enchiladas were $12 or $13. I've seriously had better at Taco Cabana. The margaritas were very bland. I was grateful they weren't overly sweet but could use a lot more lime. Again, I've had better at Taco Cabana. My favorite part of the meal were my chips and salsa. They were actually really good. With so many good Mexican restaurants in Houston and Pasadena, I'm not recommending this place. It's a shame the food isn't better because our server was sweet and professional. We love coming to Don Pepe's to eat. The food comes out quick and is very delicious. Must try the Beef Quesadillas or the Beef Fajitas. The Tejanos Favorite is really good too. I stopped in for lunch on a work day. Not too crowded so was greeted, seated and served quickly. I got the Mickey Guilley's favorite off the lunch menu for $7.99. I also ordered a soft drink for a couple bucks. The soft drink cup is huge, like a medium cup from a convenience store, so I didn't need a refill. One of the servers brought warm chips, warm red salsa and green sauce. I didn't eat too many but I agree with others, the green sauce is great! The atmosphere is pleasant and gives a good vibe. We've been to Don Pepe's twice now in the last week. And we had great experiences both times! The first time we went was probably less than 10 minutes before they closed on Thursday night. I should have checked their closing time. I assumed it was 10:00 but it was actually 9:00 that night. We were going to leave but they told us to come on in. Our server was the one who welcomed us in. It was actually the best service we've ever had! Since we were the only table in the restaurant, our food came out in 5 minutes! It was super hot which is how it should be and delicious! My boyfriend really enjoyed it and said it tasted like authentic Mexican food. He said the rice was similar to how his grandmother made it. We ordered a combination plate with 2 cheese enchiladas, 2 beef tacos with rice and beans. Our server was very friendly and didn't make us feel rushed at all. He told us to take our time but since it was already after they closed, we wanted to get out of there. We were only there for 20-25 minutes! We went again last night. This time we made sure we came earlier although they are open until 10:00 on Saturday nights. I wanted to try a margarita so I ordered the Blueberry flavor. It was good but it could have had more blueberry flavor. We decided to share the queso flameado with fajita beef. That was amazing! We were planning to maybe order another app but we were too full. It came out sizzling hot. Melted gooey cheese and fresh, warm tortillas. Mmmmmm!!! Our waitress was very sweet and courteous. The server we had last time recognized us and cane over to say hello. Stopped in for late morning breakfast on a quiet Tuesday. I was instantly greeted by friendly staff & an adorable little girl busily assembling a box. (School's out for Summer.) She may have been owner's daughter? Her sweet innocent smile deflated otherwise dark clouding in today's state of the union. Waitstaff tended to me courteously & quickly. We order from this place pretty frequently via DoorDash and decided to actually go and have lunch instead. I'm glad we did because the food was pretty good and the service was friendly enough. This place is located in the same shopping center as Ichibon. We started with guacamole as an appetizer and they also brought out chips with red and green sauce. The green sauce was SO good. Almost comparable to Jimmy Changas sauce. The red salsa was good too but it was warm which was weird to me but still tasty. The lunch menu was super affordable and had a good selection so we ended up with the Osmin's Favorite (fajita taco, chicken flauta with a side of guacamole and sour cream) and the street tacos for my husband. I ended up snagging one of his street tacos because they looked so good and they were phenomenal. Maybe not food truck quality but definitely good and not full of fatty pieces of fajita beef. Service was on point and she was friendly without being overbearing and wanting to talk our ears off. We were in and out and full within like 25 minutes with food to go for dinner.
