If I'm not feeling a Wendy's $5 Biggie Bag, I'll head over to Donald's on Central Ave, a few blocks south of I-55. The building is small and has been there for decades (older than me, I'm sure!) Their Thursday special - a polish sausage w/fries for $6.50 - is a good value when compared to Monday's $9.50 gyro sandwich or Tuesday's $8.50 Italian sausage. Most places do mustard & grilled onions on a polish, but Donald's dresses theirs up with sport peppers, tomato, and a pickle spear. Friday's special is a fish sandwich ($8.50) and tastes like a better version of the filet-o-fish at (Mc)Donald's. The pizza puff ($4) is iconic, but it didn't smack as hard as I remember. Their fresh hand-cut fries are soft and starchy, be sure to ask for ketchup. Get a root beer ($2) to wash it down. The dining room is small and can get cramped around midday. Lots of first responders, local IBEW pipefitters and other blue-collar regulars come through here. Cash is recommended since they add a 3% fee for credit card transactions. * TL;DR * Whether it's gyros, Italian beef, a pizza puff, or a Chicago style hot dog, Donald's is a good pick for a quick bite. Everyone knows a place like this. Maybe they're called Maxwell Street Dogs or Teddy's Red Hots by you, where the menu and employees are basically the same. The double cheeseburger was served with two small tasteless meat patties with the consistency of a stale gummy bear. The burger buns were burger king whopper sized and not proportioned to the small meat patties. The hotdog was served cold on a plain bun Vs sesame seed. The fries were about the only highlight. They kept their crisp through the ride to the airport. They could use some seasoning. Salt didn't so much for flavor. Nice people behind the counters. Stopped here on my way into Chicago. Its a very unassuming restaurant just off the highway. YELPed it and it had decent reviews so we decided to try it! Small private lot and only a handful of tables on the inside. This is really a glorified hot stand but with a "huge" menu. There was the standard menu and in addition a bunch of specials written in marker. We opted for the italian beef and the hotdog special. It was "ok". Given the reviews I was expecting something more diverse from the italian beef sandwich. The meat was a little chewy with just ok flavor. The hotdogs were decent but really nothing special. I was expecting a little more flavor also for an all beef dog. The price was right. Overall cheap price for decent food. 75cent charge on credit card purchases if under $10. read more

****YUCK ALERT**** worker fixing fries with bare hands after carrying pans out of back room!!! As I'm waiting in for my lunch to be prepared I noticed something that lost me as a customer for good. I order a grilled cheese and fries. Stand to the side a watch the chefs work as usual. Then comes some guy out the back room, dressed very dingy with a dirty baseball cap and no gloves, with a pan of frozen hotdogs. He dumps the hotdogs in the water and stands behind the cashier. Then he turns around and begins to empty the fries out the fryer. Grabs the metal fry loader and little fry packs and starts loading the fries. After loading the fries into the packet HE USES HIS BARE FINGERS (that he didn't wash) to adjust the fries into place and grabs a couple extra ones and stuffs them neatly. He continues for the rest of the fry tray. I was so tempted to yell something out but I was in such shock watching I just shook my head. They handed me my order, I immediately grabbed the fries out the bag and tossed them in the trash. Then looked into my bag and seen my lonely grilled cheese starring at me. I let me go hang out with the fries in garbage can. So long Donald's. I'll never return. MORAL OF THE STORY.... educate your employees on proper food handling, till then u lost a weekly customer. read more

This place is the jackpot for hot dogs. Ever since Viv's shut down their Merrimac location when I was in grade school, this is the only other place I'll go to in Illinois for hot dogs. I've never had Portillo's, nor do I want to. I have, maybe,ate something aside from hot dogs and fries from here once. If that. The hot dogs are glorious in the sense that they haven't dished out a bad dog. Always fresh and always cooked 'just' right. There's a good reason why this place has been open for so long, and it's not because of the surrounding warehouses nearby, though I wouldn't be surprised if over 80% of Don's business comes from there.
