    Scatchell's Beef @ 4700 W Cermak
    Phil S.

07/03/25 - Dude & dudettes this isn't my first time I've eaten @ Scatchell's Beef. Scatchell's isn't the most conveniently located for me being @ 4700 W Cermak just east of Cicero Ave. I literally haven't eaten here in decades & I forgot how freakin good their beef sandwich is. Last night I picked up my wife @ St Bernard hospital @ 63rd & the Dan Ryan. While driving down the Kennedy & Dan Ryan I took note of the virtual parking lot on the return trip & decided to take an alternate route home. I went west on 63rd to Cicero Ave & headed north on Cicero Ave. I thought about Scatchell's and knew I had to stop there. Like I said I haven't eaten @ Scatchell's in decades so image my surprise when I stopped in & found that they had expanded beyond their former confines. Scatchell's has a full blown dining area. By that I mean Scatchell's Beef use to be in a tiny storefront similar to a trailer where you walked into a space to a counter where you order your food w/a small counter where you can stand & eat, similar to Johnnie's Beef on North Ave in Elmwood Park or Paradise Pup on River Road in Des Plaines. I ordered their beef dipped in w/giardiniera peppers. To say this beef was incredible is an understatement. The sandwich is loaded w/incredible juicy beef, giardiniera peppers & sprinkled w/crushed red peppers. (I didn't ask for the crushed red peppers) but they added another layer of flavor that just totally brought this beef to another level. This beef has to be one of the top 2 or 3 beef's I ever ate. I forgot how dam good they were. This beef was a bloody mess to eat w/the bread soaked w/the juice it was falling apart in my hands. If you love Chicago Beef this is an "ABSOLUTE MUST" I can tell you The beef competition is stiff in Chicago but Scatchell's is absolutely one of the top 2 or 3 beef's I have ever eaten. When I say this I put them up there w/Al's on Taylor Street in the old Italian neighborhood by UIC). I say this because all Al's are not created equal, Johnnie's beef in Elmwood Park & Bari on Grand Ave Like I said I hadn't been to Scatchell's in decades but I will be back again very soon to have another beef. In an area like Chicago where beef is everywhere Scatchell's reigns supreme & is easily one of the top beef's in a land of plenty. Why eat at the pretenders go for THE REAL DEAL. YOU WONT REGRET IT

Was visiting a client in the Cicero area, been too long since I stopped by, wanted a little to eat to carry men to dinner, stopped by atmosphere was bright clean and a little busy. Service was very efficient...ordered a Beef with Sweet Peppers only. Baptized of course! The portion was just right not too big ( which is fine) but not too small. Nice to have good establishments in the Area. Will try their pizza next time. Mangia & Cheers!

Yummy . We had the Dipped Beef with Hot Peppers. Fries & Coke Zero. They make their own blend for their peppers, and I'll tell you now, the fire is on the tail end of it. . So a slightly different sandwich with their own special peppers- and I must say , very good! I recommend it dipped, and yes, don't forget a little spice, if you like that. Fries were hot & fresh. We added our own salt. I do appreciate hot & fresh food , so adding our own salt to our liking, no issue at all. They have been serving the community for many many years, and have a beautiful updated & stylish location. Definitely recommend and will return. Thank you

Went here on a recommendation from a local co-worker. This is a remodeled restaurant and the furniture is new. Order at the counter and then grab a seat in the dinning area. I had the beef/sausage combo with cheese fries and a drink. The taste was good, but there are better Italian beefs in the city. The peppers were tasty and the beef good, but the sausage was large and caused my bread to fall apart. Skip the sausage, it didn't have much taste, and stick with the beef. My co-worker said the pizza is good and it is by the slice. You do have to get a key that is attached to a clipboard if you want to use the restroom, but they do have EV chargers available in front of the place.

First beef I ever liked WITH OUT cheese....if dipped,, they will soak it and then wrap in aluminum foil.

Soooooo I haven't been here since they remodeled. I hate I went. So I have LOVED this spot for like EVER. This spot is the reason I love an italian beef. Place was hands down one of the better beef stands in the city. I guess when they updated their facilities, they left out training. Sooooooo, I'm listening to a person from Scatchells tell a customer where he needs to stand to pick up his food. Well, first being a westsider, i saw the new digs and got excited! Being a yelper, I wanted to take pics, so I go out to my car cuz i forgot my phone. Well, I take the first pic, I noticed the looks from the behind the counter...I'm like uh-oh.. So I go to the the aforementioned "pickup spot for food after you've ordered" managing the awkward looks while taking pics. I'm like geez whats the problem....... Then the worst service I've seen in a good while takes place. They call my order #. I respond I'm here, standing at the pick up area. The gentleman behind the counter replies well come here. Not in the manner of "your order is ready, come on down" Bob Barker voice, Price is Right impersonation......naw, the tone was more like " well, I'm definitely not coming over there, come get ya food"..... I haven't been this pissed off at the way I was handled as a customer in a long time. Begrudgingly, I won't be visiting this place ever again. I can't spend my hard earned money at a location that has A server this ignorant, this rude, this appalling.... Service still matters......to me anyway

After pick up at Midway, my PIC and I stopped at Scatchell's. He's a Chicago Italian beef connoisseur, and YELP-ers guided us here... The giardiniera is different- mainly celery slices and spices- but tasty! The beef is pull-apart tender and well fermented... Bread is Chicago chewy, holding up even under being fully dipped. Fries were good, but great. Chili cheese dog was a sloppy mess of YUM!! Huge soda/tea drinks. The employees were kind and efficient. Owner changed channel from Fox News to basketball game when asked. Inside, the original counter has a walk-up, old-time feel, yet the interior of the restaurant is spacious, modern, and clean. Make this a stop if you're in the Midway area, or if you like beefs!

Along with that endorsement, its 4.6-star rating out of 700+ via Uber Eats was the assurance I needed that I would have a quality experience. Looking through the menu, I took an interest in items like the Cheese Thin Crust Pizza (10" Small), Cheese Chicago Style Stuffed Pizza (10" Small), Vegetarian Pizza, Cheese Calzone, ravioli, Spaghetti, Gourmet Cheesecake, Chee-Zee Garlic Bread, and French Fries. Out of all that caught my eye, I ended up ordering their Cheese Thin Crust Pizza (10" Small) with pineapple as my topping after contemplating on spinach. Whether it be Grubhub or Uber Eats, I love ordering online because it is convenient. Most of the time my orders are completed upon my arrival or near complete. By the time I arrived at Waldo Cooney's, the employee was finishing up with my order during this ordering experience. Picking up was just confirming my name, ordering platform, and I was well on my way back to my residence. I am grateful to have had a smooth online ordering experience because the likelihood of me ordering online again is very high. For your information, Waldo Cooney's sits along a busy Cermak Rd, which you will have to keep an eye out for as you are driving up to the storefront. It can easily be missed if you are focused on the fast flow of the traffic on Cermak Rd. And keep in mind you will have to pick the right timing when pulling out your vehicle while leaving because those incoming vehicles on Cermak Rd are something else. As for my order, my mouth salivated prior to my first bite of the Cheese Thin Crust Pizza I ordered. It was presented perfectly, with pineapples infused in with the cheese, and cut into small squares. Very satisfying taste! If you have never had the addition of pineapples on your pizza, then you have no clue what you are missing. Out of my favorite pizza restaurants within a radius, I can see myself ordering from Waldo Cooney's again while in the area because it sure was satisfying. In closing, I had a great ordering experience as I have indicated in this review of Waldo Cooney's Pizza. And as it was recommended to me by Elizabeth C, I share my endorsement of it as well with you all on yelp. Service: 5 | Ambiance: 5 | Food: 5 | Overall: 5 ~Keep it simple. ~ Thomas G

If you can get past that part, Freddy's is a must. Solid subs--we did an Italian and a meatball--and the gelato/ice cream situation is ridiculous. Be sure to check your visit timings; for example, right now they are closed for a two-week stretch, I assume for staff vacations, and the hours are limited, because they are an Italian pizza/sub shop and like the ones in the city, they are not open late. But I like the back patio to extend eating space in the summer time, and people can usually move through quickly if they are just ordering the basics. The shop, featuring loads of Italian sundry goods and pasta items, works too...for those living near Freddy's that are missing spots like Bari or the other sub shops on Grand, or The Italian Store in the DC area, Freddy's checks every box.
