I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with Donaroma's over the years, and I use them for one specific purpose: Sending my mother flowers, plants, and trees for either Mother's Day or her birthday! When I call to order whatever it is I'm looking for, the staff is always very helpful, knowledgeable, and direct. They don't try to upsell me and always work within my budget. A bunch of years ago, I sent my mom a hydrangea, and they delivered and planted it for her. A few years ago, I sent her a couple of lilac trees, which they again delivered and planted for her the same day I ordered them! The bushes thrived and bloomed a month later when in season! This past Mother's Day was no different: I ordered a bouquet of pink and orange flowers without any lilies (they make my mom sneeze!), and they delivered this GORGEOUS bouquet the same day I ordered that absolutely delighted my mom! After having flowers delivered on Martha's Vineyard, I received my credit card statement and discovered that I had been billed for the same arrangement six times. No big deal. Clearly an error and no doubt the $886.90 in excess charges will be promptly credited once I notify the florist. Here's where we are in the process. Phone call 1: Terribly sorry that happened. It's our new computer system. But I can't help you. You need to talk to "G" in flowers, but she's not here... Phone call 2: "G" can't actually reverse the charges herself. She needs to speak to "A" in the office. Phone call 3: "A" leaves a message that she "might" need more information and here's a different number where I can reach her. Only I can't reach her. It's 9:30, but no one picks up and there's no voicemail, so I can't leave a message. Phone call 4: I call the first number. "G" answers. She's not sure why "A" needs more info. No she can't help me because I need to speak to "A" at "Juniper." (Note that I'm on the phone with "Donoromas" - the company listed on the six charges on my credit card bill.) Juniper opens at 10, but don't call then. Wait until 10:30 otherwise they may not pick up. I tell "G" I have a much better idea--she can get a hold of "A" and have her call me at 10am--when they open. Phone call 5: To her credit, "A" calls me back at 10am sharp. She's terribly sorry - it's their new computer system. She doesn't need any more info. Great. So, when will the $886.90 be credited back to my card? Hmm, if it hasn't happened in 3-5 days, I can CALL BACK. If you want to operate as two separate businesses with a shared billing system, don't make it my problem. Train your people how to bill transactions properly and to provide seamless service when customers call. And when you over bill a customer by FIVE TIMES, find a way to make it right with a minimal hassle to that customer. read more

We saw that Donoroma's was having a "Big Plant Sale" at a farm in Katama so we went over on the first day. The sign posted said they were selling Green Giant Arbovitae for $288 and 40% off. We asked one of the salespeople working if that price was correct and she said it was. We ended up buying 5 of them as well as a few other trees and paid their price for shipping and to have them plant them for us the following week. Since the prices were pretty good, we brought my Sister in law and her husband back with us on Monday, the final day of the sale. They ended up purchasing about a dozen mature plants and since it was almost the end of the day we thought we would add another arbovitae to our original order from 2 days before. We told the woman we had made a large purchase on the first day of the sale and wanted to add another tree. She looked us up and told us they made a mistake in their pricing and it should not have included an extra 40% off. I said you can't do that since the price was posted and we had paid in full 2 days earlier. We said we were not going to argue with her and to have a manager call us. As we were getting into our car to leave, another woman walked over to the sign in question that had been up for 3 days, and removed it. The following day the same woman who told us they made a mistake with the pricing, called and left a message saying there was no way they were going to sell us those plants at that price and they would not deliver and plant them until we paid the difference. We ended up going to the Upper Main Street location in Edgartown the following morning and spoke to a nice woman who wrote down all the information from our experience and asked us to forward the voicemail that had been left the day before by Gislane, who I since found out is the daugher in law of the owner, Mike Donoroma. We were told she would have Mike call us. The following day Mike sent an email saying he would credit us for our purchases since he had not heard from us. We replied that we didn't want a credit and that he at least owed us the courtesy of a phone call. He never bothered to call or respond to at least 3 emails. Terrible customer service and a really disappointing experience since we bought our home over 15 years ago. There are plenty of Nurseries on MV that would be more than happy to have your business and make good on a promotion without misleading and ignoring the customer. read more

I was very very disappointed with the arrangement I ordered for my mom for Mother's Day. I showed the woman working what I was looking for (an arrangement my partner had ordered for me for my birthday in New York City), and I was met with a standoffish tone explaining that they "couldn't guarantee anything." The arrangement I showed them had bright pink and crisp white plump peonies, full green hydrangeas, some spiky flora and just a few pink roses (florescent pinkish-red) -- see photo. The arrangement I got from Donaromas had cheap stems of purples, yellows and pale pink. There were just two peonies and three wilting green hydrangeas. The three pink roses were pale and began browning after just one day home -- see photo. Four tulips are very happy and shine bright, but they're so basic! The most disappointing was that the bouquet was not full or dense like the one I had shown. Below are photos of both the gift from my partner and what we received from Donaromas. I understand that each nursery should be able to put their own creative mark on each thing they put out, and I didn't expect them to copy what I was showing them, but above all, Donaromas' product looked so inexpensive for the money that was spent. I called this shop today to order birthday flowers for a family friend. The woman on the phone was so irritable and rude that I hung up and called another shop (Morrice Florist - a polar opposite customer service experience). Firstly, my simple questions regarding flower color and availability (not high-maintainance fussy questions, merely "what do you have in red and blue?") were met with annoyance in the form of heavy mouth-breathy sighs and odd long pauses. Then, grudgingly, "I guess I could look in the cooler." Next, I asked to reduce the amount on the flowers very slightly (the order total would then come close to $60). The reply was something like this, "Ugh, I guess so." Finally, I asked for a total for my order, I was told "Well, I have no idea." I'm normally very chill, extremely patient, but this was when I hung up. If I am inconveniencing you this much, you clearly don't value my business. While I was not prepared to spend a great deal of money *today*, no one should be spoken to this rudely. I have experience working in a number of florist shops, retail, offices, and hospitality. Telephone interactions are the customer's first impression. If an employee (dear god, I hope this woman was not the owner) speaks to a customer this way how are they going to treat my order, how will they interact at my friend's home? This lousy interaction prompted me to sign up for Yelp to write my first-ever review. I generally give people a pass (maybe their dog just died, maybe they have a migraine, etc) but really, this was an awful interaction. read more

Many years ago I used Donaroma's for a surprise 80th birthday party for my father. Through arrangements done over the phone, I planned on a delivery of 80 daisy's and balloons for his party. When the party date arrived, I was thrilled by the delivery of shiny buckets of all the daisy's, and he was fantastically surprised. The flowers were fresh and lasted all through the week of our festivities. Now many years later I needed to make arrangements for my mothers memorial service on the island, I did not hesitate to contact Donaroma's for all my floral needs. Over the course of a couple months with many emails and calls I was able to relay the conceptual needs, designs and deliveries. I was very impressed with the input and suggestions given by their designers and felt confident with their ability to provide me with what I needed, things progressed without any glitches which was a relief for me trying to make plans from a distance. When the day of the service and reception finally arrived, deliveries began firstly to our home. Big beautiful buckets of fresh fragrant flowers in the pastels and wildflower concepts we had discussed, as well as delicate little arrangements for some tables. Absolutely beautiful, we immediately began to take pictures as they were so beautifully done. Later came time to go to the service outdoors. As we walked up to the memorial there appeared to be a bed of flowers, soft, peaceful looking, delicate wreath of flowers at the base of the memorial sculpture. My brother is an artist and had made a sculpture of blue granite. Donorama's had a photo of the sculpture in advance and were able to make two arrangements placed at either side of the piece in flower colors to complement the stone. Together this presentation was simply stunning. The combination left a scene that was not "heavy" and somber as might be found in a funeral home, but light airy, and a true representation of my mother. Elegant in every way, with the flowers at the "celebration of life" reception, light and "wildflower-esque". All in all I have been thrilled with Donaroma's from start to finish. I certainly consider them my "go to" for any needs when I am there. I find the staff friendly, and trust their designers expertise without hesitation. They have been extremely accommodating with all my needs including complex deliveries which is not always easy in a busy tourist traffic area. In addition, I was pleased to know they were able to donate the arrangements after we were leaving to the local senior center where they could continued to be enjoyed my others locally that my mother no doubt knew as she was growing up! I love Martha's Vineyard, its people and the way this lovely island and its residents and business owners make you feel! I have made many wonderful connections over the years and especially in the last year as my daughter's wedding was planned. Planning the wedding from out of state was a bit of a challenge, but the vineyarder's all offered up more info and help than was asked for making the process much easier than I ever thought it could be. Everyone cared and had a great suggestions on who should be consulted for what! Regretfully this past week, I ran into my first really awful Vineyard experience with Donaroma's Nursery. Being in the business world myself and believing in the mission statement that the customer is top priority, I was totally taken aback by the attitude and comments from the staff members, which all seem to merely be workers doing a seasonal job rather than having any real knowledge. I called several times seeking some help and guidance as the gorgeous hydrangea plant I brought home to my daughter was riddled with poison ivy! Within hours of carrying the plant out of the car, she was covered in a very bad case of poison ivy, being allergic. There is no way she got it from anywhere else as she was not in a natural environment at all - every staff member I talked to said she couldn't have gotten it from the plant with an arrogant attitude and much talk about other staff members who are allergic and didn't get any! One girl did admit that the farm the hydrageas are grown on does have poison ivy growing too but still said it couldn't be from the plant. My daughter had to see a doctor immediately and was given a very high dosage of meds, despite having bad reactions to those as well! We consulted a master gardener as to how we could remove the oils from the plant as it truly was a magnificent plant and she badly wanted it in her front yard as a reminder of the vineyard and her beautiful wedding.. We were told we had to get rid of it and to do it immediately as it was a serious situation. Meanwhile at Donaroma's I'm still being told it couldn't be from the plant and that there was no reason to get rid of the plant, now from the manager who also had an attitude....I finally called and just asked for a refund on the plant, not any of the other expense encountered for meds and expensive creams since we no longer have the plant and was again told that she couldn't have gotten it from the plant. The manager finally asked me what kind of dollar value we were talking about and indicated non verbally that he considered it rather ridulous. Not once was a refund ever offered up by anyone and I find that very sad as that is all it would have take to make a very bad situation at least tolerable. The obnoxiousness of the staff members and their inexperience was apparent in every contact I had with them. Common courtesy and intelligent conversation would have left us with a better feeling towards them whether a refund was given or not. After all, $60.00 isn't the end of the world to anyone but you would have thought that it was to them and to me that just represents bad business practice. I'm just very glad that we merely just briefly considered them for the wedding flowers and arrangements before deciding to go with another amazing florist on island!
