A work colleague of mine recommended this place and although it's quite a distance from me, I thought I'd checked it out. At first I was hesitant when I first arrived coz they hardly speak English not that it's an issue but it's just that I'm trying to explain how I wanted my hair cut and most importantly, the color that I wanted. I opted for a balayage and much to my surprised Lily (hairdresser) got what I wanted. The only thing that I don't like was the waiting, it's on a first come first serve basis and each time there's a new client that comes in, they would take it. Dong Kinh is a place to get haircuts for cheap in Los Angeles. Although 10$ might not be super cheap, they cut my hair perfect every time. The lady that owns the place is a sweet woman with a Vietnamese accent. She's really nice and does an excellent job at cutting hair. I'd like to say they cut and prepare hair well better than supercuts, fantastic Sam's and great clips. Although there is a barber near Santa clarita that used to be 11$, they rose to 12$ and they used to be considered really cheap. For women, they prepare hair better than most places in Santa clarita where I live but it costs quite a bit in the 40-50$ range for an hour of quality preparation and straightening for bushy split ends. The environment is filled with Asians and other surrounding hair salons are not even close to being this crowded. The woman's husband is also a barber, but does not become personable to the customers and is antisocial. There are five to six other barbers and they not only been working here for years, they are pros and cut hair very quickly. You may be intimidated by the line on the outside, but the line moves quickly. The location is close in a narrow corridor next to many different locked up jewelry shops possibly due to so many thefts that have occurred in the past. I feel that this place is more on the dangerous side because of the accumulation of many homeless people, so be aware of that. I would suggest trying to avoid them and ignore them as you walk by. In conclusion, the salon caters mainly to women, but men should come by as well because they put an exceptional amount of effort in making your haircut clean and elegant for a moderately low price. I generally only go in when I have long hair, and it only costs me $12 before tips. That being said, you do get what you pay for. Hygiene isn't really a priority. I've been coming to this place for years for routine trims. I usually stick to the lady by the door for basic styling. Don't come expecting them to update themselves with the latest trends and techniques. If you want to get fancy with your balayage or unicorn colors, go to a higher end salon. However they closed down for like 7 months due to pandemic. I wanted to dye my hair for the first time just a few shades lighter. I picked the color out of the book just so they're clear on what I want. They made me COMB my own hair with a dirty hairbrush. I spent an hour after she dyed my hair and when she washed it out it was HORRIBLE. My roots were light and my ends were black. And she accused me of lying that I've dyed my hair black before and that's why it's not showing?!?!?! So I was PISSED. They fixed it. And it turned out better but still not how I wanted. They made my blow dry and curl half of MY OWN HAIR in a salon. What kind of salon is this?! It was also super crowded. Hair all over the floor. So dirty. The smell of chemicals is nauseating!!!! Overall: You get a quality haircut for $8. What more can you ask for? This is the place the go for Asian people to get their hair cut. Generally the male barbers are the ones who are tasked with cutting guys' hair but I found the women to be better and a little more attention to detail. Just make sure you let them know exactly what you want. You're getting an $8 haircut so it's a bit of a roulette but I haven't had any disaster experiences here like I've had at super cuts. Hair washes are an extra two bucks but you're going to get hair all over yourself at the end no matter what. Don't go right when they open. That's when all the Filipino ladies schedule their hardcore perms, hair colorings and etc. Midday is probably the best time for a walk in. read more

Best time to go - A weekday is preferable unless you want to join the hordes of women & families that come get their hair done. In addition to, coming as early as possible to avoid the crowds. Hairstylist - My mother and I go to Bryan who uses the 3rd ( or is it 2nd) to last chair closest to sinks. Once you become a regular of his, he definitely knows what styles suits you and makes sure come out looking your best. I once got a perm here and I insisted on leaving it on longer, while Bryan told me to wash off the curlers and solution. He was right and I ended up damaging my hair, thankfully it wasn't too bad. But lesson learned, THEY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING. Prices - $12 just for haircut. $25 for cut and hot oil treatment, $50 for highlights and cut. Prices are very reasonable. Just tell the stylist what you want and they'll tell you the price. Lastly, PLEASE TIP WELL. The men and women who work here, do such great jobs that it pains me when I only see them get $2 tips. They serve men, women, and children.. and the first thing I noticed while waiting was that everyone who walked out of the salon left looking happy AND with great hair!! Usually I feel pressured and bossed around at a salon, and my haircuts never turn out how I like, but that wasn't the case here! This was my first time coloring my hair, and the stylist was nice, patient (as I couldn't decide what color to pick) and helpful by suggesting tones that would look best on me and helping me figure out a good cut. As far as I know, it's cash only, but the price for the services are a steal! I was told (before everything) that the color would be $35, and a cut for $10, but I didn't argue when they asked me for $35. I got colored (highlights), cut (layered), and styled for $35! I was so happy I left extra tip anyway!! I also went with a friend, and though she only got a trim, they went to townnn trying to straighten her hair, and they only charged $10! This is a very no nonsense inexpensive spot to go for trims. With a family of 8 (2 males, 3 teenage girls, my 77yr old momma and toddler in tow) we can all get our hair cut and styled without breaking the bank. All the females go to Lily and the males go to Huang. Lily does fun colors for the girls sometimes and she colors momma's hair too. I usually just get my split ends trimmed off. It's seriously the best deal in town. We all go have lunch after at Sam Woo's BBQ. Please Note: I don' t come here for cutting edge new trendy styles or fancy highlights or color correction etc., but its a solid place for routine trims. I have never been to a worse hair salon! The cut was uneven and I showed her a picture of the dye job I wanted and she gave me highlights and I looks nothing like the picture. I showed her the cut I wanted and she just used a blade and gave me an uneven cut and that was it. She used the same blade to cut my bangs to give me the same cut and that was it. Been going to Lilly for 15 yrs. She's the best...all the staff there has many 25+ yrs experience. Lilly is super busy on weekends... don't bother coming without an appt....cuz your gonna wait for hours for her to fit you in. All her older clients with appts. will look at you crazy cuz your overlapping in their time. If you want quality time come during the week...everyone is good there but I prefer Lilly because she knows my style and I tell her what I want and she does it, I'm happy always with finish product. My hair was first bright pink (think Magenta in the world of CMYK) and after about 3 months of having that kind of color, the semi permanent box I bought at CVS started to leave my hair more orangey red than pink. I ended up getting a beautiful hair cut (he layered and thinned out my hair as my hair is thicker than you could ever possibly imagine) and dyed my hair an auburn-ish chestnut. The cut and color only cost me $50~! The guy who did my hair was an Asian man that was young-- not to be mistaken with the Asian man who is old. I have ALWAYS cut my hair at Dong Kinh. This hair salon is hidden inside this two story plaza that is filled with jewelry shops. My grandma, aunt and mom has been going to this salon for years because of the friendly relationship they have with the owner. Sometimes you do get what you pay for, since I'm not guaranteeing it will be flawless, but hair will eventually grow and any different style is a new style on you. I HATE it when people underestimate a place like this because they are located in "CHINATOWN." It may sound a little shady/ghetto, but they have never disappointed me because they know what they are doing. They have been here for YEARS. They work quick because they get so much business. A lot of older seniors have been coming here for years. Price: Depending on the length of your hair, a regular cut/trim for women/girls is $12-$15. A men's haircut is about $12. I got a baylayage here for $75!! You definitely cannot beat that price. Baylayage: The owner, "Ah Gew," is who I usually get my hair done with. Not sure if she knew what a baylayage was, but I showed her a photo and knew what to do. She highlighted my hair first, then dyed the bottom and top part of my hair in light brown colors. The colors faded lighter at the bottom. And she charged only $75! Can't beat that anywhere else. Other styles: My grandma & aunt likes getting her white hair dyed to black, then permed (~$40-$50?). My mom usually goes for a full highlight & dye over it + oil treatment. (~$70) Wait time: They get a lot of business, so I advise you to go super early in the morning to get your hair done.
