Wow. Just wow. My family usually gets the deep fried fish, where you make your own spring rolls with... and it's always amazing. The skin on the fish is crispy and the meat is never over or under cooked. Just perfect each time. It comes with noodles, veggies, fish sauce and one other sauce, rice paper, and of course a fish the size of your choosing. You really can't go wrong with the fried fish. Lately I've been ordering the noodles with shaken beef, or núi b lúc lc, and it's just beautifully made. Seasoned and sautéed with a slightly sweet sauce it needs nothing but be consumed. The beef is soft and accompanied by the sauce it's sautéed in its absolutely magnificent, bursting with flavor. The noodles and beef are accompanied by large pieces of diced onion, some lettuce and also tomato. With these two dishes you can't go wrong. Another thing to try though is the crispy intestines. We usually order them as an appetizer before our other food comes out. I'm not sure what it's officially called but it's literally crispy intestine flatted a little and sliced into two inch margins accompanied by a sweet and spicy sauce. It's different but delicious, and once you try it you'll never forget it's unique texture and taste. My family loves this place and although it's usually busy, it's worth the wait. read more

We came here on Memorial Weekend and the place was packed. We were lucky that we didn't have to wait and were seated right away. We came here specifically to try the fish and we weren't disappointed. The fish was well seasoned and the skin was crispy. The sauce was flavorful. Service was horrible though. We didn't get our drinks until well into our meals. We had to asked several times. We also ordered the 3 types of beef and it was excellent. We didn't get any extra vegetables for the beef entrees. We had to asked several times for that and didn't get it. The place is crammed with tables. There weren't much spaces in between. Despite the poor service, I still have them 4 stars because the food was excellent. They don't serve alcohol so it is BYOB. The portions were generously large, quality was very good (at least for me as a Filipino :) , and all for a very reasonable price! You know it's tasty when fellow Vietnamese are eating here, but you know it's very good quality when Caucasians/non-Viet are dining as well! I had the Cornish hen with tomato rice (com ga xoi mo) which definitely hit the spot; my wife thoroughly enjoyed her hot vermicelli soup (bun nuoc, I forgot which variant exactly). We ordered combo stir fried rice noodles (xao thap cam) for my 3 year old daughter, who seemed to enjoy it as she ate a pretty good portion of the dish (and she's a rather picky eater). My brother in law and his family ended up sharing bun bo hue and hen xuc banh trang (clams with rice crackers), which as regulars they said was very good as usual. My parents were in town and wanted vietnamese for lunch. I haven't had much luck in finding a really good vietnamese place that I liked already. The gamble paid off and my parents were pretty satisfied. Mom ordered the shrimp hieu tieu and she loved it. She exclaimed it tasted just as she would make it at home herself. I ordered the banh canh cua which has always been one of my favorite noodle soups. I haven't had it in years and this was really good. The soup was a bit thicker than I'm used to but the flavor was delicious and had plenty of crab meat. The more disapponting dishes we tried were the spicy beef stir fry and the shaken beef. The beef stir fry was kind of dry but it wasn't totally bad. There's just a lot of better dishes on the menu. Dad didn't really like their version of the shaken beef as there were too many veggies and not enough meat for him. The baked whole fish (ca nuong) was not as good as Saigon Block. We usually go to Saigon Block for the baked fish, but we came here on New Year day to try it for the first time. I was disappointed on how small the fish was. Granted we order a small, but I don't recall the one at SB being that small. The waiter was hesitated when we asked him to debone the fish. Even then, there was still a lot of bone in my fish, which made it very annoying to eat. This was always done perfectly at SB by the servers. The seasoning was very bland on the fish. The mam nem, or anchovy dipping sauce was not as good as SB, or the one my brother made. This condiment in general is a big deal when eating baked fish and wrapping them as spring rolls. It was good, but I had better. It was a tad more potent and salty. The bo 3 mon, or 3 kind of beef and trio delights (broiled shrimp ball, meat ball, ground beef wrapped in leaf) were good. A little pricey but you should get them if you don't like fish. The small fish was $35, and it's $34 for a medium at SB. If I ever crave baked fish, Saigon Block is still my #1 choice in Dallas. Kindna ironic that the old chef from Saigon Block is now the cook of this place, but the fish couldn't live up to it. Overall, Dong que has pretty good Vietnamese food. This place sucks. Period. We drove 50 minutes for their famous baked fish, and while the food was just mediocre, the service was abysmal. We first ordered a large fish. After waiting over an hour, we finally asked them where our food was. They had forgotten about it (what?). This new restaurant located in Garland is the place to take your family and friends out for lunch/dinner. They take reservation so if you plan to arrive in a large group, I would call in advance. Place is pretty clean and spacious inside. They have friendlier staff members compared to other Asian restaurants. Also, they are not cheap with their condiments, napkins and veggies. If you've explored a variety of Asian restaurants, you will know what I mean. When going in a large group, we usually order their baked catfish which is delicious as compared to Saigon Block. I actually like it better here. The prep time is much quicker than SB in my opinion. It's also BYOB so that is always a plus. For additional dishes, I recommend their combination fried rice which isn't as oily/fatty as most places. One of my favorite dish is the Banh Hoi Ba Vi which is something you prep spring roll style. Comes with dipping sauce and plenty of fresh vegetables and noodles. Must try! They offer so many specialty vietnamese dishes that one visit just isn't enough. Parents are hard to please when you take them out to these type of restaurants they usually like to compare it to their home style cooking. LOVE THIS PLACE. Hands down one of the best Vietnamese restaurants I've ever been to. Walking in you wouldn't expect much, it seems like a newly modeled place in a sketchy neighborhood. It's truly the definition of a "hole in the wall" place. Not very well known but extremely good. The décor was pretty and the restaurant is very clean and new. The bathrooms were clean as well as the tables and chairs. The Food was A-MAY-ZING. I loved the shaken beef and the pho was delightful. The food is evenly and generously portioned so you get the best bang for your buck! The food literally came out less than 5 minutes upon ordering. It was hot and fresh, ready to eat. The service was also extremely good too. Normally at Vietnamese restaurants you would have to go up and ask for everything like a refill of water or more napkins or even the check, but here they actually served you. Well. One of my favorite places for Vietnamese food! And apparently for a lot of other people too because I went on a weekday night and the restaurant was packed full! Dong Que has the typical Vietnamese fare - pho, vermicelli, rice plates. They also have more specialty items - I think they are most known for their whole baked catfish (I have yet to try this but it is definitely on my list to try). I usually go during lunch time and order their bo luc lac rice plate. Their bo luc lac is so flavorful and tender! It is made with chunks of red/green bell peppers, onions, and garlic. For the rice dish they give a pretty good serving of the steak for the price of the dish. The food is always consistent with each visit. My most recent visit I came for dinner and wanted to try one of their specialty items. Between the three of us we shared the dinner portion of bo luc lac (doesn't come with rice, just the steak) and banh hoi 3 vi. The banh hoi 3 vi was DELICIOUS! I noticed a lot of other tables had ordered this too. It is served with rice paper, lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, basil, mint, fish mint, bean sprouts, and dipping sauce (usually fish sauce but you can request peanut sauce or a concentrated form of fish sauce as well!). The 3 meats included are: nem nuong (pork), shrimp wrapped around sugar cane stalks, and beef wrapped in some kind of leaf. With the ingredients you make your own spring rolls! My favorite was the nem nuong and next time I may opt to just get banh hoi nem nuong instead. The beef was a little dry for my taste. The shrimp was good and the sugar cane was fun to chew on. The dinner portion of bo luc lac was quite a small serving size for the cost $18 but still tasted great! Overall, great place for authentic Vietnamese food! I have only been here a few times, and so far the food has been good. Although the service is a little slow, I got several water refills on my last visit which is quite unusual for most of the restaurants in the surrounding area. The employees may or may not speak English. I was spoken to in Vietnamese by several employees (I still don't know what they said). If I have to give you 1 recommendation it would HAVE to be their baked fish. Absolute MUST TRY! If this isn't their specialty I don't know what else to say, it's absolutely delicious! First off we went here due to a family gathering and the "adults" of the group decided to order 3 servings of this baked fish. The skin was crispy and the fish meat itself was very tender and juicy. This was great, especially since the fish dish included a huge plate of fresh veggies and rice paper to wrap up the fish meat inside. If you're going to order this dish, don't just eat the meat, take the meat and wrap it in veggies and rice paper like a summer roll and dip it in their fish sauce or pineapple sauce. It's absolutely divine. But other than the fish, the overall place was large enough to accommodate a large group of people. The location however is a bit shady looking. The restaurant itself was in a shady looking strip mall, which doesn't exactly make you feel safe and that's us eating in the day time. Inside they had, what seems like, Christmas decoration up. This is the restaurant my family goes to on special occasions, since it's so far from home but the food is so good! They have really good specialty dishes, and do them really well and it's very affordable. I would recommend banh canh cua (crab tapioca noodle soup)-- I have yet to find another restaurant (besides my mom's own cooking) that makes it as good as they do here. If you're more into family dining, then there are lots of shared dishes. Two that I've really enjoyed in the past are the banh hoi 3 mon (pictured) and the ca nuong (grilled fish). I enjoyed my food at Dong Que and it appeared to be a great authentic experience, but the big down side is that the servers and staff do not speak English well. We had a lot of difficulty ordering and when there was a mistake, they appeared very annoyed at us. However, one big pro is that it's BYOB! So we brought some vodka and had ourselves a party! Food: I ordered the #48 rice plate with beef sirloin cubes and added a fried egg. Pretty good value. It came with a lot of food and the flavor was great, but the beef was a bit on the tough side. At our table, we also ordered the chicken pho (meh), some sort of chicken flat noodles (the best) and hutieu (my friend claimed to be the best ever). I did not see this place as superior to other places I've been and had easier communication. The menu has the typical items you'd find in a Vietnamese restaurant (pho, hu tieu, bun, and rice dishes), but also contains some more unique items as well (fried fish, bo ba mon, etc). I ordered a rice dish and the fiance got com bo luc lac (shaking beef?). Even for your average, everyday dishes, the quality was top-notch! Let me tell you, that beef in the com bo luc lac was soooo tender! Like melt-in-your mouth tender. and the grilled pork in my rice dish was very well marinated. And, I don't know what they do differently, but their cafe sua da (vietnamese coffee) was the BEST VIETNAMESE COFFEE I've ever had. Ever. Great place. It was very clean and not that crowded when we showed up. The bathrooms were even clean and tidy. The waiter was extremely nice. I had my friend from Vietnam write down an item that I wanted and couldn't find here in the states. The waiter told me what it was and said they didn't have it on the menu but he would gladly go to the store beside it and pick it up. That is what led me to Heip Thai Market. He never once let our cups get low and kept checking on us even though he had other tables to attend to. We had Spring Rolls and a Shrimp Paste on Sugar Cane for starters. Then had the Pho. The fish was big enough for nine people and we ate a lot.
