Love this place! We came in from the rain and found out there was a 45 min wait for a table. Not wanting to go back out in the rain, we decided to wait at the bar. Within minutes, the server who checked us in came over and told us he was switching some things around, and sure enough he got us a table within a couple minutes. My family just went on a Sunday afternoon and experienced the worst customer service ever. We waited over 40 minutes for our food. The best clam chowder I have ever tasted!!!!!! I first feel in love with this place when in I lived in Norwalk in the late 90's and I have always gone out of my way to make a trip back here ever year for the chowder. Just this past weekend on our way home from Lake George, NY I convince my wife to stop so i could get some chowder for my birthday. I love the chowder, its thick with lots of potatoes and clams. Its fantastic. I might say that Donovan's chowder is one of my favorite dishes. I really can't tell you too much about the rest of the menu although it does seem like your typical pub food, but if you go here get the Chowder. read more

I always pass by here and I finally came in for a drink and dinner and it was over all very good. Decent prices, good American fare. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere. I had the nachos and the "make your own burger platter " was very good and it the spot. It's not a "hip" and trendy spot so it's a nice alternative from all the hip spots on this part of sono when you don't some tiny over priced noodle bowl or something. Nice pub food and good service. We had lunch here today after being turned away at Mama's Boy. Channel 12 was there when we walked in so everyone was very quiet. We ordered the clam chowder (2013 & 2014 Chowdafest winner), cheese burger sliders, and the special corned beef sandwich. All of the food came out quickly and correctly and tasted good, the prices were also reasonable. The service was good and the owner even stopped by the table. Donovan's is a very typical pub that has been in SONO for generations. They do have some of the best New England clam chowder that I've ever had, and some pretty decent bar food, but don't come here looking to be blown away. I usually come here for lunch and sit at the bar. I usually get the feeling from the bartenders there that they have something better to do, and it's a personal favor to bring me a beer and a menu. There are so many good places in SONO, so I can't in good conscience recommend this place. I might go back if they had some bartenders that didn't scowl at everything, but I won't hold my breath. read more

We had a very nice late night bar dinner here. Outside on a warm night, not the best corner, but roomy and breezy! We had steamers (20 and delicious with broth and butter; I asked for a piece of bread to sop up the broth, and they toasted a bun, which was fine). The clam chowder is really great, creamy, not too thick, flavorful. We also split a burger, which was huge, medium rare, and included very crsip, skinny fries (very crunchy and hot). This a bar atmosphere with a lack of customer service at the bar! My boyfriend and I just had dinner at the bar with another couple and I have never felt so discriminated in my life. We are locals and frequent this bar quite often, but have never felt like this. The bartender gave great customer service to our friends but when it came to my boyfriend and I it was lacking and very noticeable. The bartender tending the bar needs to get with the times and live in 2014! I will start telling my friends an co- workers about this and hopefully O'Neil's will receive more customers because their service is outstanding! read more

Welcome back Donovans, we missed you. If you're from Norwalk, chances are you've had a couple of nights at Donovans. It offers a great option to the giant bar/club scene of the SoNo strip. I went in there for dinner with two friends and had a great time. Two out of three ordered the lobster roll and it was AMAZING. It was as close as you can get to a legitimate lobster roll in these parts; it consisted of lobster chunks, butter, and a butter soaked bun (mmm). That's right, none of that mayo-drenched lobster salad. It was fresh, it was tasty, and it was no frills. My other friend got a steak sandwich and from what I can tell it was delicious. I don't know about all the other reviews here but if you go, I would highly recommend the lobster roll. Also, because of this bar's location, it gets really busy and can tend to be packed. Rule of thumb, you can expect a quiet dinner for the hours before 10 pm (maybe I should say before 8), after that, it's hit or miss. Personally, I like that about the place. If you want a quiet meal after that hour, go to a diner. read more

Was at Donovan's tonight enjoying my French onion soup until I started choking on something!! I could hardly breath! I hacked and hacked. Thought I was going to pass out!!!! I reached into my throat and pulled out a huge bay leaf. The size of my palm! That should have been taken out of the soup before it was served! Bay leaves are a choking hazard!!! We came in early evening on a Tuesday. It was pretty empty, but by the time we left it was more full (5:30 is a bit earlier than the normal dinner crowd). The food was good.
