Someone referred me to Don's Auto repair and they did not disappoint. I needed a rear turn signal replaced on my Cadilla XT5 and the dealership quoted me $1,100 because the entire taillight assembly had to be replaced. So I ordered the taillight assembly on ebay ($300) and Don's Auto repair installed it for $67. The entire repair was $367.00. The staff was friendly as well. Horrible Shop Beware of these shysters! They are very unprofessional. They are misleading. They don't appreciate a customer. They waste your time over and over when trusting and allowing them to fix an issue they created in the past. they continuously put me behind their other customers when I had paid and they caused the issue and actually never fixed the problem. they put me in unsafe loaner cars each time I had a service with them. I spent over 10 grand with this shop, and they never got it right. i called several times over a number of weeks to speak to the owner and they never would pass the message to Don to report their malpractice. I took my car to them, and they were supposed to be chasing an oil leak, and they ended up replacing other things. the job i took my vehicle to them for in the first place they deny they performed which is false. I noticed that they broke my abs wires. they never replaced them as they said they would numerous times i left the car with them instead i get the car back and nothing would be fix they wasted my time each time. informed me they were driving my vehicle and i knew they were because I was noting the mileage down before dropping it off. i am going to pursue this issue until i speak to Don or legal action will be taken. read more

I feel like an idiot! I've been going back to the dealership for years, when Don's Auto was right nearby. I'd heard people rave about them. Finally tried them myself, mainly because the Subaru dealership is way backed up. Don's Auto Repair uses the morning to ascertain your car's problem, then they fix it in the afternoon. (Although I'm sure they can't fix everything in one day, but normally they do.) I needed new rotor & brakes, as my smarety pants nephew had suspected. The staff here is incredibly friendly, the prices are fair, and the level of detail they provide (both written, via an email with a breakdown by topic, and verbally) is something I've never seen before. I am a longtime auto enthusiast who moved to Cincinnati only recently. I bought a 1987 BMW 635CSi sight unseen from an auction recently, and had it delivered to me. When it arrived, it had several things obviously wrong with it. First, the passenger side power windows were down and did not respond to the switches, so plastic sheeting was covering the opening. Second, the steering wheel was 90 degrees off center. I dropped it off at Don's and they quoted me $98 to do a thorough "all systems" used car inspection. They called me that afternoon to say that the window regulators were bad and needed to be replaced. The parts were $770, and with installation the cost would be over $1100. I asked about the brake pedal feeling soft, and they said it "might" need a new brake master cylinder -- cost about $400 installed. They also said that the license plate lights weren't working, but otherwise everything seemed to be in good shape. I told them not to fix those things. I asked if they could at least get the windows to the up position so I could take the plastic off, and they said no -- it needed new regulators. I picked up the car and paid the $112.73 charge for the inspection (with taxes and shop supplies). I then drove it a short distance to an alignment shop I had heard good things about, to have the issue with the off center steering wheel looked at. That shop called me within an hour to tell me that when the car had been chained down on the trailer for delivery, the driver had put a hook on a tie rod and bent it -- that's why the steering wheel was 90 degrees off center. They said it was ridiculously obvious -- anyone with even a basic understanding of cars should have spotted it as soon as they looked underneath. The cost for the fix was $90 for a new tie rod and $45 label to install. When I went to get it, I noticed that the plastic sheeting was gone and the windows were in the up position. I asked how they did it, and they said it was simple -- the switches that control the windows were bad. All they did was swap the driver's side switches to the passenger side to get the windows up. The regulators and motors are fine. Replacement switches are readily available for less than $15 each and plug right in. They also checked the brakes for me, and said the master cylinder was fine -- the brakes just needed bleeding, for which they charged me $45. TL;DR (bottom line) -- Don's charged me over $100 for an incompetent inspection, missed the obviously bent tie rod, and told me I needed to spend $1500 on window regulators and a brake master cylinder. Another shop in less than two hours correctly diagnosed the bent tie rod, broken power window switches and soft brakes, and fixed it all for a little over $200. read more

I found out about Don's through Groupon. They were offering a discounted service price of $24 for what would normally be $53. It included: an oil change and tire rotation (an $18 value) and a 23-point inspection (a $35 value). The inspection was not necessary for me (my car is fine), and I asked them not to rotate the tires. I'm not sure why Groupon says the normal price for oil change and tire rotation is $18. If that was true, it would be an amazing price! (maybe they got the two prices confused) Don's offers an oil change on Mondays for $19.95, which is a great deal, and it's $32 the rest of the week. I called ahead to make my appointment and mentioned the specific requirements of my car which include a special filter, a crush washer for the drain plug, and just over 6 quarts of full synthetic oil. On the phone, they said it's no problem, they are fully stocked in everything they need which was a nice surprise. In the back of my head, I'm thinking that there will probably be an upcharge for the oil because that's been my experience in the past. They were very polite and friendly/warm on the phone and inspired confidence. When I arrived for my appointment, I found the location to be charming. It had a vintage look and a family feel. I felt at ease immediately and the staff was engaging, polite, and seemed genuinely interested in the particulars of my vehicle. I mentioned again that it would need the filter, washer, and full synthetic. He then let me know there would be an additional charge for the oil. They immediately started on my car and were complete in a timely fashion. It's one of the first times I've experienced an appointment at a garage that starts promptly and lasts for a reasonable period of time. When I went to pay, the upcharge was a bit more than I expected at ~$30+. They gentleman mentioned they gave me the oil at their cost, and the price seemed to indicate that. All total, my cost was in-line with the least expensive oil change I've been able to find for my car, at around $50-60. What this means though, is that the Groupon really didn't do much of anything for me. I can't blame Don's for that though. I definitely like the place and would be happy to entrust them with my car again, which, if you knew me, is a good compliment. A few final notes: This is a family owned and operated business in the area since 1941 (4th generation). They have a wide array of services, will work with warranties, and have after hours drop off. They also offer a valet service if you need a ride to work/home after dropping off your car. read more

We took our car in because it was making a noise when braking. $260, "a clip needed to be tightened." It was still making the noise. Took it back a second time. No charge, said they fixed it right. Still making the noise. Took it back a third time. $350, "The hardware on your brakes needed to be changed, the last guy who did your brakes should have done it." Basically, it cost over $500 to fix a simple brake noise that didn't even require new brakes or rotors or anything. When we questioned them on it, they got offended and defensive. We won't ever go back. Too bad too, it is right next to my company and there were a lot of people who wanted to use them if they were any good. Before we took the car in mentioned above, we also took another car in because it was making a noise. $300, still making the noise. We gave them the benefit of the doubt on that because we've tried to get this noise fixed several times and nothing has worked. read more

After buying a nice Jag from Texas, a month later it started having starting issues. I took the car to Don's, they said it needed a new battery and a new alternator, as the alternator was not charging over 14volts. Don's replaced the battery and handed me a printout of their electric diagnostic system showing the alternator was faulty. Rather than shell out $1000 to a mechanic, I decided to check the alternator myself, as mechanics aren't the most trustworthy type. Low and behold the alternator was charging just fine and has been for the last year. I also had an issue with the ABS system, Don's diagnosed the issue as a faulty ABS cable. The quote Don's gave me to replace the ABS cable was over $500 just for the part, the Jag dealers were only $240. Nice try RIP OFFS!!!!!! I ended up getting the ABS cable online for $30 and installing it myself. I would not take my car here!!! read more

Stopped in, by chance, to have a used car check done prior to purchasing. They were very thorough and found many items that caused me not to by the car. Mainly underbody rust. The cost was 75.00 but that included 2 more cars that inspections. $75.00 well spent. read more

I needed to get a headlight element replaced on my Ford Windstar. I called them this morning during a severe rain storm. I found out they were booked solid and had no time slots available. I've been going to Don's since about 1995, when "Grandpa Don" had a small shop in Downtown Montgomery. The two grandsons, Chad and Don, now run the shop as fourth generation auto mechanics. (Their late father (another Don) had run the shop before them getting started). I started going to Don's after a chain's repair shop had put in new A/C fluid (with extra money for a dye to detect leaks) for several hundred dollars. The chain's work lasted approximately until I reached the end of the street (and they were on the corner). Grandpa Don fixed it for less than $100. I knew my car needed new brakes and rotors. After seeing some of the reviews and with how close it was to my office, I decided to bring it to Don's. Worst choice I could have made. They replaced the brakes and rotors same day I brought it in and initially I thought everything was fine. 2-3 days later I heard a banging noise consistently in my front, driver's side wheel well. Because they just touched that area and I had a warranty for the brakes, I called Don's up and they told me to bring it in. I was told by their people that the caliper had fallen off and "this happens sometimes". I know I don't know much about cars, but I know that your brake should not just fall off because a bolt was not tied down hard enough or come loose randomly. I decided that I wasn't going to worry, mistakes happen and now my car is fixed. It was a nice gesture to give me a $25 gift card....that I will never use. Less than 5,000 miles later: I hear another clank and screeching in my tires. I have since reassured my position that brakes and bolts on cars do not sometimes fall off from a family friend who is a mechanic in Chicago, and decided to bring my car to another location closer to the city to have my car double checked and find out what is causing the noise. They called me later that day and asked me who changed my brakes. I told them Don's. They told me one caliper was completely off (making that noise). Two of the other three were missing bolts and if they did have bolts, they were loose. The new place replaced and added all of the hardware I needed to make sure that my brakes would not "loosen" by chance. The scary part for me is the what-ifs. If the brake was flopping around TWICE, what-if the brake line broke, all the fluid would fall out and I was left without braking ability on 71? What-if I didn't bring my car in the next day and other calipers that were incorrectly placed on my car fell off in the meantime? What if this caused more issues with my car and I had to replace my whole braking system again? Warranty or not, I would NEVER BRING IT TO DONS AGAIN! I don't care if I'm the President of the US, or some bum off the street, brakes should not be something you skip on. I get that there are a lot of competing items and issues that come up during the day, but this is someone's safety and the safety of their family. Take pride in what you do and do it well. I highly doubt the first generation would allow such poor craftsmanship, which is why they were able to sustain the company for so long. If this happened to be a new employee, check their work. It's a simple task. My recommendation to anyone is to not trust them. Oil change maybe. Cars are a worry that no one wants to deal with, but follow-up work & money because of poor installation and abilities is a bigger hassle and worry. Again, it's not just me that I'm upset about, it's my family and the families that could be affected because they didn't act quick enough or realize that there was something wrong with their newly installed part. read more

They could not provide an estimate when other folks were able to do so. They made all sorts of excuse as to why they could not provide the estimate and yet other folks can.
