I have gone to all the of the Anne Arundel county donut institutions. Some have said a spot in Severn is the best, others say a spot in Odenton. I'm here to tell you, in my opinion, Donut Shack is #1! Perfect texture, perfect taste and so fresh! I'm a Boston Creme fan and this location has the very best. All of the others are also very good. Stopped on the way to work and got half a dozen for work, plus an apple fritter and twist for me and an enormous cinnamon roll for my roommate. It was $18 and change, so $20 with a small tip. Work loved the donuts. I tried the cherry filled and it was good. Apple fritter was huge and light, but needs a lot more apple, IMHO. My roommate raved about the light and perfect dough of her cinnamon roll. I also gave her a big hunk of my fritter. Yum. My goal is to work my way through every donut and then convince them to make me a bear claw! Why no decent bear claws in Maryland? I gotta go back to pink box shops in California for them? Lol. Was recommended Shack for the great selection they have. Arrived about 330 on Saturday to almost entirely no product. Advertising may say 24 hours, and yes, it is OPEN 24 hours, but they absolutely do NOT have a 24 hour selection. Very disappointed. Guess ill stick to Dunkin. read more

Tucked in the corner of a small strip center with a Verizon store keep your eyes out for it. I've been meaning to stop by for years on my way back and forth to/from the eastern shore and today was the day I finally made it. I've always heard Donut Shack had great donuts and it did not disappoint - the stop was well worth it and such a pick me up. Upon entering I was struck with the clean and cheerful retro interior and friendly service and even friendlier customers! Even at 12:30pm there was a nice selection of donuts to be had. I'm partial to cake donuts and the toasted coconut one was delicious. Haven't tasted the chocolate one yet. I'm usually driving by at later hours but I found out today they are currently open 24 hours so I'll be stopping by more often! read more

A small donut shop nestled in an old strip mall style joint - blink and you'll miss it - I almost did. (Could benefit from a brighter sign for those looking for something in the late night.) Fresh, delicious donuts and coffee - the classic combo - and open 24 hours. It's rare to find places like this anymore. I went the other night - while I knew there were some creative flavors here, I was craving a sugar glazed chocolate donut in particular... the clerk was incredibly friendly when I pressed on about my craving, and he was patient and enthusiastic to suggest the honey-glazed chocolate donut. I had some tunnel vision at first, but ended up getting a couple. I arrived in the early morning. Although all the chairs were flipped up on the counters, the storefront was bright, clean, and fully stocked with a teeming display of donuts. I found myself overwhelmed at the selection - if not a little nervous of choice paralysis if I didn't have my particular hankering in mind before. The shopkeeper was, as I mentioned, incredibly friendly, attentive, and cleaning despite the already-immaculate appearances and being in the wee hours of the morning. I asked if there was any coffee - to which he responded with, he had just made some! My timing was immaculate. The coffee was piping hot. You are able to customize it yourself to your taste, using creamer and varying milks at the fridge. The coffee counter was well-stocked with sugar and stirring implements. Cookies and Cream flavoring dust/sprinkles for coffee? Never seen that before... Had to try it! (I saw someone else - perhaps the mythical baker - in the back when I was getting my coffee.) I'm not the best barista, but the caffeine was appreciated for the drive home. The moment of truth - the donut review. The honey-glazed chocolate donuts were fresh, fluffy - moist and cakey, but not cloying to the throat. I was expecting a dryer cake consistency. I had a low bar, considering the widely lackluster experiences at Dunkin, the only other donut place in the state it seems - but I was surprised at how ... I cannot emphasis or reiterate this enough - fresh the donut tasted! Being picky, I was also apprehensive about a sticky, overpowering honey glaze - but the frosted glaze that sugary sweetness with a sweet honey twinge that accented the fluffy chocolate very well. After eating one, my sweet tooth was satisfied - but on the drive home I found myself wanting another (regretting the fact I shared the other). Was reading the Baltimore Banner about a donut shop that was "going viral" after being being shown on a TV show. Someone commented about Donut Shack so I ventured 20 miles to try it this morning. SO GLAD I DID! It is tucked in the corner next to Mexican restaurant and by a Verizon store so a little hard to see at first. I walked in and loved the nostalgic decor from my youth. Nothing fancy or trendy...just a simple shop with plenty of cute, multicolor counter seats and little tables. In the back is the display of deliciousness! I'm short so it was hard to see the very bottom case but the options are PLENTY! The young lady at the counter was so friendly and helpful. She made the experience even more pleasant. I ordered 6 donuts and it was very difficult to narrow my selection to just 6 since everything looked so good! I got chocolate frosted, honey dipped and donut stick. Everyone agreed that each one was fresh and great! Also got a great cup of coffee (real coffee not the sugary dessert they try to label coffee). Definitely worth the 20 minute drive! They are open 24/7 however sign on door noted they will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays in December so take note. Cash and card accepted. GET THESE DONUTS! I am not sure what else to say about this place except for it is amazing. I can't believe I have never left a review. I have visited this place quite often and whenever we get the chance it's typically a treat. It's quite the drive for my hubby and I, but we make it at least once a month or once every other month, I recommend the cinnamon roll donuts those are absolutely my favorite. Popped in here because a friend of mine recommended it to me, and they were ... right. To be honest, we just got a few donut holes and not all were totally fresh, but they did taste good. There's a front counter with a selection of donuts holes and other pastry things, and behind that, there's a wall with more selection of regular sized donuts. We tried the chocolate ones, the original glazed and sugar coated, and each of the three tasted good. They just could have been a little fresher. With that said, the guys behind the counter were friendly and efficient and the eating area was clean. Next time I'm in Severna Park, I'd come back for sure. read more

We went slightly out of our way to stop at Donut Shack on an early Monday morning after crossing the Bay Bridge. It was worth the extra minutes in the car and the only problem I had was deciding which to get / stopping myself from getting all the donuts! The place is easy to locate off the main road in one of the shopping plazas, it has plenty of parking and they are in the end unit of that building, right by where you turn off the road (easy to locate!) The staff was friendly and helpful as I was weighing all the options. I finally settled on a strawberry filled powdered donut and a maple bacon donut. The strawberry donut was a great donut, but was a little sweet for me (not overly, but I'm a little sensitive to too much sugar). I saved the maple bacon for later in the day and it was just as delightful a few hours later! There is some seating so if I was looking for a place to plop down and enjoy a hot tea with my donut, I would have stayed - but easy enough to hop back on the road and hit the highway. I think Donut Shack will be the new go-to anytime I find my GPS suggesting a route through Severna Park! read more

My favorites are the honey dipped log, cinnamon swirl, bear claw...but really can't go wrong with any of them. Food - Really, really good old fashioned, crafted donuts! I ordered a half dozen, the chocolate cream filled - the donut was perfect, thick, yeasty, sweet but not too sweet. And the filling, too many places the filling is whipped confectioner's sugar, some sort of fat (not butter) and all you taste is sugar, not so with these. NOT overly sugary sweet, generous filling that complements the donut, not over takes it. I've had their jelly filled ones better and they are also NOT overly or "candy-sweet" either. Service - I went later in the day, no one else was there and the lovely young lady manning the store was attentive, and provided lots of information about the products. I've heard stories about the "rush" times in the mornings. They do offer pre-ordering on-line on their web site so you can pick up starting at 6:30 in the mornings. Ambiance - it's a donut and coffee shop, no frills, no hype, smelled wonderful of fresh coffee (not the overheated stuff) and donuts. I don't know when exactly they mix and bake them. But the place had that "yeasty fresh baked" smell. A couple tables and seats, the emphasis is on taking the goods out of the shop. Pretty standard donut shop. Came in to try some of the various flavors. The doughnuts are big and doughy without being too dense. They have most of your standard flavors and a few fancy ones. The ones that stuck out to me were Maple and some sort of peanut butter cup doughnut, which is intense. The standout item from here was the apple fritter or "Chop Suey." It was nicely spiced and evenly glazed. It was also fried in a way that had a delightful crispiness without losing a soft interior. I would come back for this. Was driving by there today and saw their sign. Walked in and found the store to be very nice. Nowadays I judge a donut by the apple fritter. This place has a very good apple fritter. In fact I think it is the best I have ever had. Note, their apple fritter is HUGE and heavy. You will enjoy 1 but eating two at the same sitting is near impossible. One is satisfying. There are only two other donut shops that come close. one is in Las Vegas and the other probably 20 miles from this one. Also got a gluten free pack of apple cider donuts. Given they are gluten free it is a much tougher / higher bar. They were okay and fairly decent. Definitely worth a try if you have not tried out this store. All of them were good but our favorites were easily the maple and the honey dipstick. If you love the more creative, unconventional doughnuts (read: Sandy Pony or Fractured Prune or even Diablo) this place isn't for you. These are all classic flavors to match the vintage esthetic of this cash-only establishment. its worth noting that they offer a large variety of pastries and baked goods outside of just donuts, everything looked amazing. Bottom Line: Under new management effective 2.29.2020, Donut Shack has reverted to its formal glory with a few upgrades along the way. Ok, so here is a brief history on Donut Shack just to set some context for this review. Donut Shack was opened in 1978 and then from 1985 to mid-2019 Donut Shack was owned by the same couple, Bill and Stacey Prevezanos, who painstakingly made fresh donuts by hand every morning. They were super hardworking and their sweet treats swooned customers. The Donut Shack embraced its 1970s feel and never remodeled but locals wouldn't have it any other way. When the original owners retired they sold the business to some impostors and many of us were waiting for there to be a memorial service for our beloved DS at Barancos next door. Those were the dark days for Donut Shack and resulted in lots of bad Yelp reviews. Then, in early 2020 there was some good news - new owners who were going to honor the nostalgia and quality of the original Donut Shack including using the original recipes. Hooray! So on 2.29.2020 (because who doesn't love something special to do on leap day?) Donut Shack held a new ribbon cutting ceremony. Following the ceremony long time locals like myself lined up on one of the coldest days of the year to get inside to get donuts. After 45 minutes in line, I finally got to the counter to triumphantly order donuts which I think were pretty darn good. I just don't want to be too optimistic too soon that the Donut Shack really is back. (I guess that is superstition at work!) Ok, that history wasn't very brief. Here's what you really need to know about the resurrected Donut Shack: - Donuts are still made fresh and hand cut. They have donut holes too. Sixty varieties just like the good days. I love the eclairs and Boston Cremes. - Donut shack now takes plastic! This long time cash-only business will now gladly accept credit and debit cards on their modern touch screen system. - The coffee has gotten a major upgrade. They are now serving Ceremony coffee. They even have some Ceremony cold brew in the refrigerator case. - Remember the faux wood grain counter in that funky shape and the old school multi-color diner stools? Don't worry - they are still there! Anywhere else in SP orange, yellow and green vinyl stools would be tacky but I wouldn't have it any other way at Donut Shack. - I don't recall what was on the walls of Donut Shack befoe but now it has some awesome historic photos. I particularly love the photo of a four car train on the B&A railroad going across teh Severn River Bridge. I actually remember the old B&A tracks and a portion of the old bridge sticking out from a cliff over the Severn River Bridge. There is also a new mural. But perhaps my favorite photo is of the old owner proudly standing behind the donut case. I'll get a few more visits in and then update my review! Welcome back Donut Shack! read more

Loved coming here as a kid, my family went religiously after Mass every Sunday morning for over a decade. I remember being 3/4 years old and giving my family's order at the humble shop's old-school counter for the first of many, many times. The donuts were always amazing, the service was next level (we personally became acquainted with the original owners and counter staff and loved chatting with them each week), and we never had any complaints until the original management retired. Now, I'm so so happy to say that after some uncertainty for a number of years around COVID time, the new management has brought back our beloved donut establishment! "The Shack IS, indeed, BACK!" Being 24/7 again is the final piece they needed to return to glory so I can once again say: yes, yes, yes you should DEFINITELY go to Donut Shack!!! It shouldn't even be a question.
