Sweet Bamboo Boba is hands down the best place I've ever found for bubble tea. You can make your own drink exactly how you want it, with your own flavors, combinations, and recipes. They have standard options too, but the fun part is building your own creation. They have bubbles, all kinds of jellies, teas, syrups, toppings, and so many ways to customize it. It reminds me of one of those self-serve frozen yogurt places, but for bubble tea. My go-to drink is strawberry jelly and lychee jelly on the bottom, then I fill the cup about two thirds of the way with ice, add coconut tea up to the top of the ice, and finish it with butterfly pea flower on top. We stumbled into this place bc the Wife wanted a boba tea, and wow, I did not expect all of this. The vibe is immediately different. The place is bright, colorful, really fun energy the second you walk in. They've got a Street Fighter arcade cabinet and a soccer table, so you can talk trash to whoever you came with while sipping your drink. Pretty hard to beat that combo. My wife got the pineapple coconut piña colada slushy and was raving about it the whole time, she used her favorite word: refreshing, describing it as not too sweet, and that it hit the spot just right. Me? I was too busy losing at Street Fighter to focus. The staff were awesome too, friendly & helpful without being overbearing, actually seemed like they enjoyed being there. Just a fun spot. Took my kid here for her birthday and it was amazing! I hear it's the first make your own Boba place in Maryland. So it's a flat fee (a little less than $9) and you make your own custom boba...you get to pick your own base, syrup, toppings, etc. You're also allowed to try/test out the different bases, toppings, boba, etc. They have fun toppings--like one was lemon soda popping bubbles, so it tasted like sprite! The staff member is super helpful in explaining the whole process and with taste tests. They also have lots of card games, an arcade game, and a fun soccer game where you sit and play with your feet. TLDR: Overpriced, tea just wasn't good. I tried this place around a year ago because it had amazing reviews, but my drink was so terrible that I couldn't finish it. It had an awful metallic taste, which I think came from the lychee jelly (lychee is not supposed to taste like that). I drink a ton of boba, and have never had something so bad I couldn't finish it before. I came back today to try it again, since the reviews of this place are continuously amazing, and mine is the only bad review. The toppings were the worst part. The tapioca pearls had firm and dry cores (I think it was maybe undercooked), which really brought the drink down. The jelly was not good, and I wouldn't even call it "jelly" personally. It was essentially sugar and flavor pellets with a processed and unpleasant tangy aftertaste. The tea wasn't great either. I sampled their jasmine tea since I really like jasmine, but I wasn't a fan, and I can make better with cheap grocery store tea. I tried their oolong tea, which was decent, but the flavor felt pretty diluted unfortunately. I also tried the Hokkaido tea, which was very sweet, and didn't taste quite like Hokkaido tea in my opinion. Normally I don't mind when boba is sweet, but I feel this place is pushing it too much. I ended up getting a little bit of the Hokkaido tea, and about 5x that amount of the oolong tea (which was fully unsweetened), and it was definitely sweet enough for me. There's a drink I sometimes get when I'm at college called "crème brûlée ube brown sugar milk tea with brown sugar boba". I personally prefer to call it "diabetes in a cup". I think the sweetness of that drink would be comparable to a full cup of the Hokkaido tea. Additionally, $8.46 is an absurd price to pay for this. I can get better boba for $6 down the street, or much better boba for $6-8 about 15 minutes away. If I want genuinely good boba, there's some shops in Rockville that I happily pay $8 a cup for, and they blow this place out of the water. This would be 3 star tea if it was $6. The staff member was nice, and the building itself was cute. The staff member recommended the Hokkaido tea with a pump of brown sugar syrup. This is why I tried the Hokkaido tea, but I didn't opt for the brown sugar pump since I'm not a huge fan of brown sugar boba (I prefer fruit tea and more eastern new-style tea). The "build your own tea" is a fine gimmick, but I don't want to pay $8 for it, especially when the toppings you can add are low quality. Additionally, some places have enough customization on their menu that you can essentially build your own tea anyways. read more

We drive a full hour to get here. My daughter happens to be a bubble tea connoisseur, so Sweet Bamboo Boba was high on her list to visit. It did not disappoint! It's so fun and absolutely reasonably priced. Her favorite part is definitely being able to choose and all topping she likes. I like mixing my flavors and using a tiny bit of ice. The machines line one side of the cafe. When you enter, staff will ask if you've been there before. If not, they'll take you through the process and you can taste any flavor you like. They are always helpful and kind. If there's a topping or flavor you'd like that's not in a machine, you just ask and nearly magically it appears in your cup. As I started this, we drive an hour to get here. We've been more times than I'd like to admit, but it's worth. Great product, great staff, cute cafe... it's worth it! read more

I love boba, but this place was a bit overwhelming. When we first got there, we had no idea what to do. We stood around a bit, but thankfully a staff member eventually came over to us to give us a rundown. They explained very briefly how to use the machines, and then let us sample some. It was a bit awkward to sample because the staff had to wait and hand us cups directly to try stuff versus giving us some sample cups and letting us sample on our own. I didn't feel like we could sample too much because of this. We also didn't really get any recommendations or suggestions of combinations. They just kind of let us go free after sampling. Wow. just wow. I'm not usually in it for the make your own desserts but this one was great. You start off by picking your toppings, I know it's toppings and they go on the bottom but you dont want your tea splashing in your face at the end. best part, unlimited toppings for the same price! you could get a full cup of tapioca or red beans for the with no milk tea or a full cup of milk tea with no toppings. Same price! I would recommend going lighter than you think you need. both times I did it, I ended up with way more topping than necessary. After the toppings, you choose your base tea. I chose the Hokkaido milk tea at max sugar. I need that sugar. Then choosing the syrup to go in it. I chose the brown sugar syrup because again, I need that sugar. Finally, you get to put the seal on the top of your cup. I never thought it would be fun to do it myself but the sealing on top of the cup has always fascinated me. The service was excellent. They asked if I needed help and to guide me through the process but I already had my own guide and they were ready to help anybody else who came through the door. I am grateful that the service let us taste all the teas first. We both got the 0 sugar oolong which tasted pretty good. When I saw this on social media, I had to check it out! It's the first time I've heard of DIY boba in the DMV area & it's a such a unique concept so I hope to see this local business grow! We my fiancé & I got there, the owner asked us if we've been there before, which we haven't so he happily showed up how to process worked & even gave us samples of each flavor. I've never met such an attentive owner so it was lovely being attended to & hearing about his favorite flavors. I got a jasmine tea with honeydew & wintermelon syrup (wish I had only chosen one or used the sample cups to add a smaller amount since it was super sweet for me. And I ended up getting a lot of different jellies aside from tapioca, which is usually my favorite part. For about $8 a cup, I thought this was a great deal! They even offer a military discount too which was really nice esp for this area. The place is definitely very decorated & oriented towards kids and families, rather than young adults, as I can see by all the decor & bright colors. Despite this, I still I told my friends about it so I hope they check it out since it was so fun to mix & match! My only feedback is I hope they bring a vegan milk option (ex: just replacing a spout to add a little bit of oat or soy or almond milk) to the drink for people who prefer plant based milk drinks (the milk drinks here use a nondairy creamer but it doesn't appear to be vegan) but otherwise we'll definitely be checking it out again & I hope this local business sticks around! Cute place that is relaxing and family-friendly. I was greeted warmly by Lisa when I went there by myself the first time. She showed me how to work the machines. When I told her that I was looking for a coffee-based bubble tea, she let me try the tapioca balls that have coffee in them. After learning about all the options, I ended up making a cold coffee bubble tea that had their iced coffee, Hokkaido milk, tapioca balls, and the coffee-bursting tapioca balls. It was really delicious. The owner came out to say hi too. He shares that all the ingredients are imported from his native Taiwan. How wonderful! I wish this place was closer to me. I've heard of it, but hadn't had a chance to stop in. The place is interesting -- you walk in and use these little machines to make a boba tea. Super cool concept! Create your own bubble tea combination via dispensers in the wall, just like frozen yogurt. The woman working at the register greeted us when we came in. Since it was our first time visiting, she was kind enough to explain to us how the system worked, with the tea, syrup, and topping machines. There is even a sealer once you are finished to put the traditional boba lid on your cup. I decided to do the jasmine milk tea base with half strawberry half mango syrup, and then added strawberry and mango jelly with light ice. I really liked that I could decide my own sweetness and add just the right amount of ice for me. I highly suggest grabbing a straw to mix it and do a quick taste test before you seal the cup in case you want to add a little more of something. The atmosphere is a plus, with board games and mini soccer you can play with your feet and your friends while you drink your boba. This place is a gem in Maryland! The owner took his time to walk us through how the dispensers work. The toppings, the tea, and the flavors -- they're all top tier. I worked at a boba shop myself in the west coast growing up, so trust me when I say the tea that's used here is the real deal. The boba's cooked perfectly too. The vibe and the furnishing reminds me of the boba shops I used to go to and hang at as a kid. There's games, little soccer tables, and a lot of seating. If I were a student, I'd be a regular here.
