The Donut Shack used to be the best donut shop in town. We would drive 35 minutes almost every weekend to grab fresh donuts no matter what time of day. Since the new owners took over it has been horrible. Today was my 4th time since they changed owners and the last time I will ever go there. The donuts are worse then Dunkin' Donuts. I went this morning at 6am when they first opened thinking that the donuts were going to be fresh. Instead the donuts tasted as if they were sitting there all night. They were stale and hard. We heard that the business had changed hands but had high hopes when we were in town for another visit last week. Donut Shack used to be great. Then, ownership changed hands in the summer of 2019. Now the donuts are consistently dry and cakey. They are just very bad. Even grocery store donuts are better than these. Oh and one more lovely detail; the donuts are more expensive than other places in the area. Some people continue to support this store because of what it used to be or to help a local business. But we can't live in the past and there are other great local donut places now. My kids and I gave this place a chance and got a dozen donuts twice over the summer. We tried a variety of flavors from glazed to frosted to jelly filled. Each time they were dry and terrible. We threw most of them away. The owners seriously need to try to learn from the people who used to work here how they made the donuts that everyone loved so they can turn things around. But they do not seem to value the art of making a delicious donut. The new ownership seems to be only motivated by profit. The donut quality is down and the prices are up. Maybe it is just going to take some time for the new owners to get their act together. Went in and place is tacky now. Previous owner took down their pictures and new owner didn't even bother to patch the holes on the wall or paint. Paper cut outs of doughnuts taped on the wall now. Lol. Had to look for a seat where the counter wasn't covered with crumbs. Doughnuts were no where as fresh as they used to be. When we were ready to leave no one around. Everyone was in the back. I have been getting Donuts from Donut Shack for our employees for the last year. They have always been awesome. The business was sold recently, was closed for remodeling and reopened recently. I went today to get the employee donuts and was extremely disappointed. The donuts are horrible they are stale, very dry and lack of flavor and not made the same. It is obvious that the new owners have cut back on everything that made these donuts great. They no longer sell muffins and some other specialty items they use to have. Lets put it this way, several employees including myself threw our donut in the trash. I will not be purchasing any donuts in the future and I don't see them being open long. SAD!!!! read more

This is was my first time here. Although they are open 24 hours I would strongly recommend only coming here during the day. I am a nursing student, i just got off from working at the hospital for 12 hours. It was late, 1am and I wanted to try donut shack. When I came in it took about 6 mins to be acknowledge. Customer service was okay but when I gave them my order they rolled their eyes and also screamed "oh my god" in the back when all I ordered was 2 donuts. Update 8/15/19: The price of a dozen donuts was raised from $10 to $14 last week. If anything, they need to offer sales to get people to buy the subpar donuts not charge more for them. End Update. I visited the Donut Shack last week to try it out after the new ownership had taken over. All of the donuts were cakey and dry. They were not what you expect when you pay for food. They were subpar. I got a strawberry shortcake, a strawberry frosted, a chocolate fudge, a blueberry cake donut, and chocolate donut holes. We tried a variety of donuts. They were all subpar. We ended up throwing away some of the donuts because no one ate them. Usually our young kids will eat them up when you leave them on the counter. But they voted with their feet and left the donuts alone. So far, the management has shown very poor judgment resulting in a drop in the quality of the food. All they had to do was keep the same employees and learn the existing process that produced fantastic donuts that were very popular over decades in the town. Instead, they fired everyone and closed shop while trying to figure out how to make donuts. Well, they reopened too early because the donuts are substandard. One of the appeals of going to a mom and pop place is supporting the local community. Up to now, the current ownership has fallen way short of being worthy of receiving my support and I will not be returning any time soon. The food quality is poor. And they summarily fired the prior staff, who are local high schoolers. The only reason I see to support them now is to help reestablish the local favorite donut shop and give them time to improve. But honestly, it's the end of an era. It's time to move on. If this were a random new donut store no one would go there because they would immediately recognize the poor quality. Right now, Arundel Donuts or Carlson's are leaps and bounds better than Donut Shack and have the mom and pop feel. Sandy Pony is great as well. Even Dunkin Donuts has reliable donuts. read more

Went there for the first time this morning. Bought a half dozen and a large coffee. I found the coffee to be average for a medium roast. I prefer dark, which they don't seem to carry. The donuts were disappointing. I went in this morning with the idea that I was about to eat the greatest donut I've ever had. Nope! Not even close. I had blueberry, Boston cream, double chocolate, fudge, and peanut. They didn't seem fresh to me and were dry. On top of that, its cash only. I am updating my Donut Shack review, because under the new ownership, the donuts are amazing! The Boston Creme is loaded with custard and is topped with generous amounts of delicious, chocolate frosting. It Donut perfection! The jelly donut is equally amazing. It is so soft, I would liken it to biting into a cloud. Most places have dry jelly donuts & rely on the filling to make the donut edible. Not The Donut Shack! The jelly filling AND the donut itself are both wonderful & delicious. I can't wait to try the classic honey glazed & strawberry frosted that are still left in our dozen. My husband brought them home this morning, as a surprise for the family. He said that the customer service was great. He ordered & paid over the phone, and when he arrived, his order was ready & waiting for him, clearly labeled, on a table, outside of the shop. It seems like the new owners are running a great business, despite these trying times of restaurant closures. I'm SO glad The Shack is back, in all it's delicious, donut glory! We asked next door and they said the employees were probably "in the back somewhere." We waited outside for 30 more min and watched patrons come and go. We ended up leaving, never to return again. During the brief Dark Times™ when this wasn't the case, I bought donuts from the nearby chain establishment and they were terrible! There was one flavor profile no matter the variety...SWEET. Sorry but a real donut is more complex than just sugar-coated sugar. I stopped in this morning for the first time since the newest opening and was very pleasantly surprised by the number of different donuts that were available. I know they're still working up to what Bill and Stacy offered but all of my family's favorites were there so we were excited. You can definitely tell that they are working with the original recipes and they are already delicious. Now in my later years I like to stop by once a month and pick up a few for a treat. This place is incredible! The best donuts around, they have 60 varieties, and rotate the flavours 20 at a time not counting the "fancy pastries", which deserve a paragraph of thier own. The f.p's include cinnamon buns, bear claws, apple turnovers, and these are all the size of your head. For a buck fifty they are quite a deal. FYI the Coffee is skippable. Go, Go now... Donut Shack had been a long forgotten bookmark of mine for a while, and for as much time as I have spent in this area, I can't believe that I hadn't ventured in here sooner. My sister and brother-in-law brought us in here the other night while we were visiting for the holidays. The four of us decided to get a dozen, so that meant we each got to pick three. I chose the Bavarian cream, the macaroon, and the honey-glazed. I don't remember all that my husband chose except for the strawberry shortcake. I think it's safe to say that these were the best donuts I have ever had. Though the macaroon was the cakey-kind that I normally don't prefer, it was still excellent. The honey-glazed was absolutely wonderful, my favorite of them all, and even though my husband called me boring for choosing it over so many other more interesting ones, I think it says a lot about a place when the basics are done so well. I was too entranced by smells and sprinkles to take much notice of the interior, but it definitely seemed to be a blast from the past as most others have already noted. The staff was very friendly and extremely patient with us, as we were all pretty indecisive and took quite awhile to make up our minds what we wanted. I love this place, and the fact that it is open 24 hours makes it even more lovable and forgivable that it's a cash only establishment. Who cares about ATM fees anyway? read more

I have been going to donut shake for 25 years. I used to pick up three dozen every week for the office but the last time my three doz cost $42 instead of $33 and 1.5 of the 3 dozen went in the trash. Everyone complained about how awful they were. But I stopped today for my husbands sake for his favorite Boston cream. Not only did they not have those but they only had 6 particle trays for hard stale donuts. So sad it won't be long before they are gone. Never again for me. read more

There is a donut that I have found only in New England called the Jelly Stick, which you can find in every Dunkin from CT on, but not at any in our region. Donut Shack has em! The donuts were dry and a lot of the glazed donuts needed more glaze. Maybe we had an old batch. The price for a dozen is great... $7 and some change.
