This place is awesome for kids! I actually kind of enjoyed it myself too, but mostly for the complete novelty of having a 2' long hot dog! I got the man vs. food, which was bacon, chili, cheese, and peppers. It was a pretty good hot dog, but I wish I would have got something else. I think everyone should go here at least once. It's that hole in the wall joint where they have the challenge for that guy who can eat two giant hot dogs in 20 minutes to get a tee shirt. Where else can you get that kind of action? Plus, the owner (I'm guessing he's the owner) came out and said hi to everyone and asked about their food, and gave the kid a sticker! Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. Taking a picture with a giant hot dog isn't something you're likely to be doing anywhere else, so live it up and have some fun! read more

While up in Hartford for 2000 Tons of TNT fest, my friends and I were craving a cheesesteak. We looked up this place and thought we'd give it a shot, and man, did we pick a winner. Cheesesteak with onions and cheese whiz, as good as it gets...something you can't really find in San Antonio. Granted, the roll wasn't AS great as the Amaroso you get in Philly, but it was still soft and delicious. Fries were perfect. If ever up here again, I may have to try their hot dogs; it wasn't until entering the building I realized this was the famous 2 foot dog from Man vs. Food. I had the 16" Reuben Dog and was very satisfied. The bun was excellent and the dog had great flavor and a nice snap. The fries were a bit greasier than I like and I left most to be thrown away but the dog made up for it. I have been in these types of places before and usually am met with an atitude and mediocre service. The employees were young and I expected the sevice to be bland or worse. I was pleasantly suprised with a smile and eagerness to help. While the restaraunt is a little dumpy, it has great character and makes an out-of-towner feel welcome. read more

Went in here on a Saturday afternoon there was a slow moving line and the employees seemed a little stressed out so when I got my chance to order I said "gimme the doogie" and he said "what?" I said "gimme the doogie I have to get going" so he said "I got your doogie right hare" so I told him to throw in some fries too, so with some attitude I got out of there. This little place is really cool! It's a small place with kinda weird hours but it's definitely worth the trip. I got the pretzel burger and the rest of my party got a crab cake sandwich and hot dogs. It was a little overwhelming to read the whole board and order in a timely manner so I recommend looking at the menu online before going. Ok, so I will be real here.. I've never been big on "Doogies" for the most part, but... I was craving a lobster roll in landlocked Newington. Drove by Doogies today and saw their sign out front for lobster rolls. Went on with my day. Decided to splurge and order one for my dinner to take out. First off the price was the BEST of any pricing I've seen for a lobster roll. secondly, this lobster roll was fully packed with juicy lobster meat. I ordered a side of cole slaw and was pleasantly surprised to find it VERY tasty and freshly made. My 3rd big "LIKE" about this"take out" lobster roll was that the butter was served separately in a nice little take out container, so when I got it home, the roll was still slightly crisp from toasting, The lobster, like fresh from the shell, and unlike other places that SOAK their lobster in butter and in turn ruin the roll...I was able to just put a touch of butter on the sandwich myself, saving me calories as well as a soggy roll. All around, I must say I give their lobster roll "10 Stars" not 5!! AND their method of packing it all up for take out was superb!! Today was the $.30 two foot-long hotdog day. What a disaster!!! I expected a long wait, but here is a list of what was wrong: You don't know you have to buy a drink and fry to get the special and you can only get three additional toppings which were way over priced. My order was wrong- I paid for chili on both dogs and received only one with chili. The hotdogs taste a bit under cooked. My cheeseburger was not cooked all the way through The fries were on the cold side No A/C in the building No ICE All the drinks coming out of the soda fountain machine were warm; including the ice tea and lemonade The staff let safe food handling fly to the wind The owner and his HUGE mouth was down talking other local restaurants loudly in front of every one. He kept saying things like "how much money do you think I would make if I do this everyday" meanwhile he was wiping the perfuse sweat coming off of his balding head with a thin napkin, then touching customers food. Ewwwww One customer took another customer order who had been waiting over 25 mins and only after the customer starting to yell did the owner go after the stolen food. When he came back with one bag the customer asked where the hotdogs were and said to the customer "well I'm not going to take them out of the guys wife's mouth.". As I am standing there the customer who stole the food said I have the dogs outside with my wife at the tables I just need the fries and rings. The owner was sweet as pie to the thief where he was completely rude and inappropriate with the man who's food got stolen. I have not been to Doogies since they opened and trust me on this I will be there the day they close to spit on the ground the owner walks on. What a horrible man and a horrible level of professionalism he has. Do not go to Doogies, you are better off at Capital Lunch in New Britain where they know how to handle a large crowd with a smile or stop and pick some dogs up at the supermarket. read more

Please be aware that when you initially walk into this establishment, calling it a dive would be an understatement. This place is small and grimey. Solid place to grab a Martin Rosol dog and fry! Their menu is pretty extensive in terms of hot dog combinations..I usually stick to the traditional toppings that really make or break a CT Hot dog joint, that in my opinion is chili, onion, mustard. Call it what you want (coney style) us nutmegers know how to make a chili dog. The dog was perfectly charred, bun toasted, and a nice smooth chili sauce drenched in tangy mustard. Went to doogie's around lunch time on a tuesday.. it was packed! We both got hamburgers and they were both DELISH! The fries were amazing and fountain drinks were refillable. I did have a large baby stroller so it was difficult to navigate in the small restaurant in between the tables, but the other diners were kind and understanding (baby is too young for a regular seat or high chair). Also, the guy at the counter that took our order was very personable, he took the time to talk to the baby even though people were in line. I will totally come here again! read more

If your looking for a good hot dog place to go to, this is not it. The prices are through the roof and the food is messy and sloppy. After seeing Doogie's featured on Man Vs Food, my husband and I decided to give it a go. I'm glad we did. The Hot Dogs were the best I've ever had and the service was lovely. I do love my hot dogs and the two foot hot dog with everything (chili, cheese, peppers and onions) was simply awesome. My hubby had the Philly cheese-steak which was also huge and he loved it. I don't normally post reviews but I had to in this case. I have eaten at Doogie's in the past and would say that The Works hotdog was fair if best and that is being generous. However, after attending the seafood festival over the weekend in R.I. I still had a craving for lobster. I went to Doogie's on a whim and would have to say I was pleasantly surprised. The lobster roll isn't overflowing with lobster but it very good. The best thing I have ever had there. I have had the lobster at least 4 times this week and it is only Thursday!!! I had the curiously strange yearning for a hot dog the other day, we were in Newington so my husband suggested Doogies, apparently he had heard good things. So we went. It is what you would expect a hot dog place to look like. The tables were clean so I was a happy girl. But man was I disappointed when I got my hot dog...it was just ordinary. No beef hotdogs... The lobster roll was very plain and not very good, but that's expected at a hotdog/burger joint. The hamburger was very rubbery and heavy... Great hotdogs!!! I love hotdogs, especially natural casings. These are the bomb!!! Huge! Fixed many different ways (fixings). Onion rings are mediocre. I won't bother next time. Can't beat their cup of NE clam chowder for 3.98. It is excellent. I will return and plan to try the clam strips. They also have burgers, fixed many different ways, fries, fried dough. Yummm! I have been to Doogie's many times. When I want a quick sandwich, Doogie's is one of the restaurants I stopped at for lunch. I aways order a cheeseburger( they call it a CHEEZE BURGER). I Always order it as part of a lunch special combo, French fries ( they call it FRYZ) and soda. Very good value.( $7.99). You order at a counter and wait for your name to be called. You then go up the counter to pick up your order Cheeseburger is always good. My biggest mistake is not trying its hot dog. I will order the two foot hot dog on my next visit. Very interesting decor. Lots of old 45 records on the wall along with old concert posters Music from the fifties and sixties playing throughout small restaurant. Not a large seating area. After a five-mile hike at Wadsworth Falls, Boyfriend had a craving for a hot dog. I'd never been to Doogie's, but it was the first place that came to mind, so we went. I have to say I really liked it. We ordered 18" hot dogs, and when they arrived we said at the same time, "This is bigger than I pictured!" I kept it simple, just ketchup on mine. We each also got a drink, but we skipped the fryz. I usually only drink water but they had a couple of flavors of Crystal Lite, so I threw caution to the wind. ;) I loved the oldies music, the 50's theme of decoration, and the trivia cards at the tables. I think Doogie's is a 3.5/5 but I had to give it the 4 just because of reputation and because its often just what i'm looking for - a delicious hot dog or Philly Steak and Cheese. Man vs Food was here and they have a Dog on the menu devoted to him. Its not the most intimate of places to eat but if you are just looking to grab a quick bite then its perfect. I think you can get an equally good dog at other places but you typically don't get the variety and also the service sizes you would at Doogies. read more
