Firstly, this is a small store but it is entirely packed with all middle eastern/indian essentials, like flours, seeds, condiments, chips, sweets (bagged and homemade), canned goods, clay pots, etc. PLUS it has a meat butchery in the back, which means the freshest halal meat...fresh ground beef, chicken breast, ground veal, lamb, organ meats from veal and lamb, etc. it all looked VERY FRESH. They also have a small vegetable section but that is mostly very essentials like cilantro, carrots, onions and tomatoes. PLUS it is a restaurant! Which is precisely what I was there for and, left very well satisfied. I tried the daily special (Mon-Sat 11am-6pm) "sandwich" but is not with bread, is with pita, and chose BEEF KOFTA and FELAFEL.. WOW ! both definitely larger than a usual lunch portion. The kofta was juicy, tender, fresh and very well seasoned with fresh veggies and a mildly spicy red sauce inside that was just perfect every bite!. The felafel was PACKED with smashed felafels with veggies and I added garlic sauce and red sauce... it was truly delicious! They have a wide variety of drinks, chips, snacks and sodas from middle east to complement your sandwich. Also, at the entrance, they have their special coffee, which you serve yourself, and it was delicious! To top it off, the service was very friendly, specially from the lady at the cafeteria, but overall friendly and helpful. And BEFORE you leave, take a look at the small perfume section they have! we found some fantastic arabic perfumes and I will be back for 1 of them that hypnotized me lol. This is a great secondary grocery. By that, I mean you go here for ingredients you can't find in a regular grocery store like Kroger or HEB. This has the best selection of whole spices and lentils I've seen anywhere in this area: so great in fact that this grocery is my go to location for these goods. If you're in the area and you want to cook some Indian food, this place is one you must visit. However, their limited space limits the amount of inventory they can hold. This results in extremely limited amounts of vegetables (I saw one large container, and that was it). I didn't see milk or eggs at all. Their meat selection is better though; they even have frozen microwave dinners separated by meat (beef, chicken, and lamb). I wouldn't use this grocery for pantry essentials; I'd use them in case you want to eat/cook something from Indian cuisine specifically. And the parking spaces are very limited. I got lucky and found a parking space, but not everyone might be so lucky. The parking lot is just two rows of spaces, and a couple are reserved for a separate entity. I'd try to get here near the time they open (9 am every day according to their website) since there's probably fewer people then.

I particularly love their extensive rice paper selections. My favorite is the "no water" rice paper, which doesn't require dipping in water to roll up like traditional ones. Unfortunately, this type of rice paper is available at every asian market so I'm happy Tan Binh has them. They also have a nice section dedicated to ready-to-eat and hot foods. You can grab and go with options like fried fish, tofu, and cooked meats. Customer service is usually pretty friendly. Just like anywhere else, you should check the expiration date of every product before buying. My cousin forgot to do so and bought two boxes of solar dried bananas that were expired. And during the warmer seasons, they set up a nice plant and herb section for sale right outside the entrance.

It reminded me Dynasty Supermarket before it closed. They both have resemblance from late 90's look and feel, just like the rest of this strip mall. I couldn't shop here because about 90% of packaging were in Vietnamese. It would take me days to translate with Google Translator app on things I might want. Couple of aisles were stacked with boxes. I considered myself skinny. But I couldn't even squeeze through them without knocking things off the shelves. That's a safety hazard. One corner of store has stacks of rice from Thailand, namely Jasmine rice. Lots of them in 25 lb sacks piled in the middle and smaller packages on the shelves. They seem to be fresher than Viet Hoa Supermarket. Another bad thing about doing here is the prices are marked. It could create a communication problem with cashier. I would come back if I can find someone speak same language to help me to translate.

When my family moved to Houston in the early 90's, I remember frequenting the old Viet Hoa on the weekends. With time, things evolved and Viet Hoa became one of the Asian grocery store powerhouses in its current location on Beechnut and Beltway 8. With Chinatown's busy weekend traffic, it's convenient to have a few smaller Asian stores like Tien Hung as alternatives for ingredients or supplies. Obviously don't let the run-down store or presence of peddlers turn you away, but always be cautious of your surroundings. Do as I do, quickly get in, grab what you need, and go! The storefront is not the cleanest nor most well-maintained, but they do offer a limited selection of seafood, meats, and produce. Occasionally, my mom comes here for Asian herbs and pho bones and meats to save time. Should you need ground pork from certain cuts or sliced meat, you can request those services from the butcher. Sometimes, the shrimp in the seafood section is even cheaper than Viet Hoa or Hong Kong. My favorite items to get are the homemade pork and shrimp wontons, which are made in-house daily. The wontons are located in the refrigerated section in the back of the store. For $6.50, you get a reusable 14 oz package of 32 wontons. Since I buy them in bulk and have to transport them 5-6 hours in the car, I freeze them as soon as I get home. Before eating the wontons, I let them defrost in the refrigerator for use the next day. These wontons are the perfect addition to make your own wonton soup with egg noodles, veggies, chicken broth, and whatever other ingredients you prefer. Everyone that has tasted these wontons loves them, especially during those cold winter nights. Another favorite of mine is the 25lb bag of Con Nai Bao Bo(deer) jasmine rice. I have purchased about 3 bags already because of how fragrant it is when cooking. Compared to other brands, this jasmine rice is more soft and moist, with a subtle sweetness. It's more expensive than other brands at $27.50, but definitely give this brand of jasmine rice a try if you're wanting a better flavor/texture profile. At the front checkout counter, there are a small selection of homemade Vietnamese goodies like: sesame balls, banh bong lan (sponge cake), and shredded pork & pork skin (bi). I haven't tried any of the baked sweets here since Parisian Bakery is right next door, but I have tried the tasty shredded pork & pork skin (bi), which is sold by the pound. You can use the "bi" as a spring roll ingredient, on toasted French bread, or to be eaten with rice or broken rice dishes. Don't expect friendly service and the cashier lady often tries to ask you to buy more homemade goodies. Like I said earlier, grab only what you need and be on your way. Consider Tien Hung as your local Asian convenience store. I frequently stop by when my mom needs a few ingredients for dinner to avoid the hassles of parking and traffic at Viet Hoa or Hong Kong. And you can always grab fresh French bread, pate chaud and sweet goodies next door at Parisian Bakery too. Less hassles and getting sweet treats afterwards = winning!

I just wish they could do the same with more of their fish in medium sized portions because it would be super convenient. The staff is helpful and quick. They explain the different types of fish and give good suggestions when something is sold out. Compared to other places we have tried, Sushi Depot feels more approachable and the quality of the fish is very high. For $11.75 you get a choice of rice (I've seen brown and purple) or noodles (I always get the noods) plus 3 choices. And a small veggie soup. The lunch box options rotate, there are some items that they have more often. I always get their green beans and I try their various tofu options. Recently they had an eggplant stir fry and it was delicious. There is also an ala carte section that has dim sum items. I love their turnip cake (law bak go).
