This is a great local business that provides thoughtful service and adorable cakes. I recently ordered a 3 layer 6" round cake for my sister's birthday, and I wanted it decorated like a unicorn. The sales associate walked me through the order ($50) and took down my color and flavor preferences. I also ordered a gluten free cupcake add on for my celiac friend ($4). On the day of, the pickup went smoothly, and both the cake and cupcake were well packaged for transport. The cake was adorable, and they even decorated the cupcake to be a mini unicorn. Have always been a fan of Dorthy Ann Bakery. While the location is not necessarily on the beaten path it is back in an industrial area it's worth a stop. They have donuts, cakes, cookies, breads and more. The staff is always very friendly and quick to greet you when you walk in. This visit was for cookies and cake for a birthday party. This busy bakery is in an odd location, but it works. The staff are snarky, in a good way, and very efficient in serving people. There were seasonal cookies (Valentine's day) displayed throughout the restaurant. The ambiance was that of a bakery and small sit down restaurant. The breakfast panini was delicious and large. I had a particularly complex cake decor request and they nailed it. I wanted a chantilly cake but with buttercream frosting and easy on the frosting. The challenging part being I wanted all the decor in frosting instead of laser printed and I wanted to capture a lot of different scenes for an 80th birthday. I had a meeting with a staff member to go over everything and the owner, Joan, came out to join us and pitched her own ideas and solutions based on her experiences and it was a great colab of ideas. It turns out she even decorated the cake herself because after meeting with me and seeing and hearing my ideas, she had a vision of what I wanted. Everyone at the Birthday event oooo'd and ahhhh'd over the cake and asked me where I had it done. It tasted perfect and the birthday guy was really happy with the buttercream frosting and he's typically not a huge frosting guy. In fact our whole family is not huge on frosting. This was the first cake that not one of us removed any of the frosting to eat it. It was perfect. The decor even had the kitchen of the restaurant we went to talking and the staff was asking where we got the cake. Everyone was so awed by the decor and taste that it was the hit of the event. The friendly staff and care of the owner on top of that has won myself and family over. I would HIGHLY recommend using Dorothy Ann Bakery for your next cake event. Their deli food is also fantastic and an employee named Michelle suggested the idea of using their cinnamon bread for French Toast at my Brunch the following day. It was so so so good. Absolutely a great idea that everyone enjoyed again and I would also recommend. Also, the price of the cake was lower than I would have expected for the taste, size, and decor requested. Nice bakery. They celebrate holidays here including Mardi Gras. Best place in the Twin Cities for King Cakes. Not as good as New Orleans but still very good and lots of filling choices. I've never had a good experience here unfortunately. My mom got their donuts and cupcakes recently. The donuts were not what I like. I know most ppl like those airy donuts but I don't. Bc I grew up eating Maplewood bakery and they have an old world bakery items with density and good flavor. The Dorothy donuts lacked flavor in my opinion. Nothing to write home about. It seemed that there were quite a few chatty and polite and helpful teens working, and since some reviews make mention of grumpy staff, I just want to say props to the teens who show up early on a Sunday morning during month 11 of a global health pandemic. They are super friendly and make the perfect pastries for your party, we've ordered from here many times. Not sure if they still do it post Covid but they have brunch on weekend mornings, very good! Quality baked goods! Everything I have gotten from here has tasted wonderful! They have beautifully decorated cakes and cupcakes. I ordered my In-laws anniversary cake from here and it was beautiful and tastes great. They were even able to create the flavor I wanted to match their original wedding cake. And from the picture I brought in they were able to work in some of the details of the original cake as well. The reason I give them a 3 is because of the customer service. I'm never sure what I'm going to get. The counter staff is usually friendly and chipper, however when I have made special orders I have had more trouble. Maybe it's me... When I did the anniversary cake I was working from a budget and trying to make decisions that would surprise my In-laws and please the rest of the family throwing the party. When I made the decision to get the tiered cake from Dorothy Anns and get the sheet cake from a different and less expensive source, I was challenged by the person I was ordering from as to why I wouldn't just get it all there. It was obvious from a budget stand point why I couldn't do that, but the person seemed really offended that I was going with a different source for the sheet cake. Went to this bakery for the first time to get some holiday goodies and this bakery is packed full of everything you could ever want or need to make your holidays a hit. They have a cute Whooville display as well. My teenagers said the donuts could use more glaze and I tried a sugar cookie expecting royal icing but it definitely had almond bark in there. The grinch cupcake frosting tasted sour (lime maybe) and the cake part minty according to my husband. I enjoyed the gingerbread cupcake. Donuts is all I've tried and they are pretty good. I've had better. The options run out quickly on the weekends. Surprising they don't make more to keep it better stocked. My advice is get there before 8:30! Or that chocolate donut will be gone. :) The staff is not overly helpful. Some are more knowledgeable than others. There can be a short wait. Cakes are pricey. We are ordering one for a baby shower. They make it fairly easy though. So I'll be back to update on how that turned out and more importantly how it tasted! The best part of the lunch was dessert. The carrot cake was pretty good. Unbelievably moist, and still pretty moist even the next day. The sandwiches were ok. The foccacia bread was very fresh. I've been going to Dorothy Ann for special occasion cakes, holiday cookies, brunch, and even hosted a cake decorating party for my daughter once. I recently preordered and prepaid for a cake and their lack of customer service has lost them all of my future business. I sent pictures of what we wanted and talked to someone about the design twice. I specifically asked if a drawing could be sent so I would have some idea of what I would get to avoid showing up to get the cake and hating it. I was told that the decorators are very good and it wouldn't be a problem and there was no way for me to see the cake until it was done. The day of pickup, I was texted a picture and it was not what we asked for. They admitted they had not opened my email with pictures and were going from the description and picture the person taking the order had provided. They said they would try to change it, but the shape and most of the decorating was already done and unable to be changed. I gave them a few more hours to try and "fix" it. When I picked it up, I asked to speak to a manager. I was told in many rude ways that it was my fault for not giving them more notice and "that in case I wasn't aware, we were in a pandemic and they were doing the best they could". I called 8 days in advance of the pickup date, but regardless, they shouldn't take orders if they feel they can't fulfill them. I guess Dorothy Ann isn't concerned with customer satisfaction once they have your money. I could forgive a design misunderstanding. However, the condescending and rude conversation I had with the manager, Colleen, is completely unacceptable and the primary reason I won't be back. read more
