One of my friends knows the owners or the family so we had to try it this weekend (Sunday). Service was great, food was great. Honestly I was so hungry I forgot to take a picture of what we ate or drank. I had a grande strawberry margarita on the rocks with sugar instead of salt to drink. For dinner I had chicken enchiladas with white cheese Minos the sour cream. It was really good. I don't think I had my food longer than 10 minutes and the margarita was perfect. The "nachos" were just corn tortillas cut in half with some beans and cheese on them. Toppings for them came on the side due to delivery. The queso was really awful, I had to toss it. Just tasted like metallic processed goop. The pico was fresh and wasn't bad. The pinto beans were also okay. Why is it so hard to get a burrito in this area that you can pick up and eat? The burrito was smothered in cheese and had to be eaten with a fork. It was pretty bland. For those of you that still do not know me well, Mexican food and I go way back. There was a spell back in 2013 when Mexican food and myself went on a torrid affair for two weeks, doing nothing but spending time with each other and enjoying all the benefits that sabor and pico could handle. Unfortunately, a marriage was never to be, and we ultimately decided it best to stay in the friend zone so to avoid any other future confrontation. Where there is good Mexican food, I will venture. I did so tonight, getting on the Metro from Falls Church out to Alexandria to try this place out. How easy it is! Just walk out of the Metro station and cross the street. You are there. If you really look, you can even see it from the Metro station itself. So when I walked in there was plenty of seating so I got myself a nice view of everything from the Metro station to the restaurant itself. The menu is not too vast, but there is certainly enough to pick from. I went with three enchiladas (Chicken, Beef, and Shrimp) and got an order of Tortilla soup. Before you order though, you are given a bowl of chips and salsa. Both look homemade, but to save on my calories, I restrained in eating them (okay, I did have *one*, and it definitely did not taste like a Tostito chip). Before I get into the whole enchilada of this review, I would like to point out the work ethic of the entire staff. As Jackie G. mentioned in her review, these servers work their butts off. As cute and adorable as all of them are, they hustle and ensure that each customer is adequately taken care of and not one crumb is left behind. They also ensured my water glass was never empty and ensured that quality was always a #1 priority. Okay, now where were we? Oh yeah, the food. I asked for the soup to come out first. It did. It is hot, and spicy. It has enough cheese, tortilla strips, chicken, and vegetables to be quite satisfying, but honestly, El Paso Mexican Grill makes one better. If the price was $6, this would be a good deal, but for $8, that is pretty pricey for soup that I finished off in 5 minutes. My advice? Skip the soup, unless you just want something quick. Not long after I finished the soup the enchiladas arrived. Smothered perfectly in three sauces, rolled nicely in three tortillas, and served with guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, rice, and beans (I asked for black - server suggestion). These were fantastic! No skimping on any of the meats (especially on the shrimp ones), the sauces tasted homemade, the beans were meaty and flavorful, and the size of these things was not to be upset about. One of the best parts was the guacamole. Clearly this was a homemade guac. It tasted fresh, and complemented everything. Guac is like the glue to most Mexican dishes (save for the chips). If it tastes great, the whole meal is going to be memorable and fantastic. If not, the whole dish falls apart with it. Unfortunately, my bill was expensive, which is why this review just falls short of a 5 star review. When I return, and I say that loosely because I sure as heck am coming back here, I cannot wait to try something else on the menu. Only I will do without the soup, I can live without it. Oh, and if you know some Spanish, definitely try your Spanish skills out to the servers, it will flatter them. read more

We have eaten here so many times so I'll just review 3 of the items. Spinach Enchiladas. (4 stars). Growing up in Worcester Massachusetts for my formative years, I lived in a densely populated community with a primarily Italian and Mexican influence. I guess that is why I love both cuisines so much??!! I have learned over the years is that a Mexican dish, for me, has to have a BALANCE of seasonings and MELTY CHEESE!! When I am stressed out or cold, I crave a nice hot plate of enchiladas with melty cheese. It's my "go-to" dish every single time. When I was growing up, I preferred the carne asada and carnitas enchiladas that my neighbors frequently made and shared with us. But these days, I'm finding that I LOVE the spinach enchiladas the most??!! It's weird because I am, by birth (LOL), a carnivore. I adore meat. But the spinach enchiladas seem to have a light, yet flavorful, bite of pleasure. DA has a flavorful rendition of the enchiladas I enjoyed as a kid. I've tried their grilled beef, chicken, shrimp, cheese, and spinach enchiladas and have decided unequivocally that the spinach enchiladas are my favorite. Why? Because it's light and the spinach absorbs all the flavors from the butter and garlic!! Oh, and did I mention, ALL THE MELTY OOEY-GOOEY CHEESE??!!! This dish is definitely not for the health-conscious human, even though it is made with spinach, but those leafy greens just absorb so much more of the flavors than any piece of meat can. The sides are on par with what I would expect. Flavorful Mexican rice and beans. The pico de gallo is definitely something I personally avoid since it is very oniony and watery. Fajitas. (3.5 stars). "I don't know why, I, keep coming back to you." - Keep Coming Back by Richard Marx I'm a sucker for any meal that comes out piping hot on a sizzling platter... Knowing full well that the proteins and vegetables will be completely overcooked by the time I finish taking photos and am ready to eat!!?? I can't even explain this insatiable insane idiocracy to myself?? Even with the overcooked proteins, I enjoyed my fajita meal. I ordered the lamb, shrimp, and steak trio. While the proteins did suffer from the overcooking process, I can't blame DA for that. The proteins were still flavorful albeit slightly tough to chew. The shrimps were cleaned (gutted) so that was greatly appreciated. The peppers and onions had a nice grilled smoky flavor and also absorbed all the juices from the proteins. Tasty combination! Birria Tacos. (3 stars). I didn't grow up eating Birria tacos nor did I know what to expect. I knew from seeing some photos on social media that there was a dipping sauce that accompanied these tacos and that they were normally filled with pork or beef. I also knew that a copious amount of cilantro and onions were served with this dish so I asked that my onions be served on the side so the BF could still eat them the "authentic" way. The tortillas were fried... Sadly, they were nowhere near crispy. I was disappointed by that. I wanted a nice crispy fried shell... The meat tasted more like beef jerky. Very burnt and hard to digest. The only saving grace for me was the guajillo sauce. It was heavily seasoned and flavorful. It helped to reconstitute the meat and make it juicy and tender again!! While I personally wouldn't order the Birria tacos again, it wasn't bad, just not executed the way I would prefer. ============== Service at DA is always friendly and accommodating to our woofers. They always bring out ice cold water for our woofers FIRST!! I had the chicken enchiladas and they were flavorful and very filling, it came with pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole and rice & beans. I stopped into Dos Amigos on a late Sunday afternoon for a quick bite to eat. I have always seen this restaurant and wanted to try it but never stopped in before today. I was happy to see all employees were wearing masks and tables were spaced to allow for social distance. They also had digital menus which was nice. Our server was attentive and employees kept our drinks filled (always an A+ in my book). They had some nice specials available and kept chips and salsa flowing for the table. Dos Amigos is super convenient! It's right behind our house so we'll walk over to get some chips and salsa and margaritas. My roommate and I decided to split some nachos and we probably should have looked at pictures because the nachos ended up coming out like a few scattered tostito chips with some meat, cheese, etc. on them. For an appetizer, it was not a lot to share. When we think of nachos, we think of just like a stack of chips with everything on them. So the nachos were definitely disappointing. Their steak quesadilla on the other hand is really delicious as were the margaritas. I went inside the restaurant to pick up the take-out and they have a cute seating area and lots of outdoor seating (which was actually, surprisingly, crowded at 5:00 p.m. on a Monday). The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the options are plentiful. Among the things ordered were: -Guacamole and Chips (WOW! So fresh! And a great portion) -Taco Platter (Served w/ black or pinto beans, sour cream, guacamole and their signature pico de gallo. Two soft or crispy corn tortillas stuffed with cilantro, onions / chose beef and chicken as the protein) -Churrasco Carne Asada (Marinated N.Y. Strip served on top a bed of fajita vegetables, your choice of black or pinto beans, white rice and signature pico de gallo) -- LOVED this so much! It was a truly amazing dish and very filling and satisfying. I really loved this!! So so. I had some time today to get some lunch here with my wife. They sell themselves as "fine" Tex-Mex so my expectations were a better atmosphere. Honestly I think people go there out of convenience but I don't think it's for the food. Servers were friendly. The place is clean. There's adequate parking. But past that, I don't know. My chicken burrito had no flavor. Lots of chicken, but no flavor. My wife said her tacos pastor were good but only ate 2 of the 3 her dish came with. In sum, it's not bad if you need to eat, but if you're hoping for a better flavor profile then I recommend finding another place. read more

This review is going to sound so silly but I do have some constructive criticism for this restaurant. Considering how pricey the guacamole is, I really think there needs to be a change in how it's prepared. The guacamole we got was primarily onions, I've never seen anything like that. Basically every bite was mainly just onions and I could barely taste the guacamole. I'm not sure why it was made that way but please consider making it with less onions! I returned to the DC area from San Diego for a short weekend trip to get my townhouse listed to rent. It was around lunchtime and I was getting hungry so I decided to go to an Old Town favorite of mine. Just a short walk from my townhouse is Dos Amigos, or as my husband and I lovingly refer to it as the English, Two Friends. I have never been disappointed with a meal or experience here. My go to is a frozen strawberry margarita and a ground beef chimichanga with black beans and rice. I also really like their chicken quesadillas and recently tried their strawberry margarita on the rocks. Truthfully, I've tried plenty of their menu options and have enjoyed them all. The fish tacos or shrimp tacos could actually rival anything served in Baja California. In fact, I'm still looking for my Two Friends replacement in San Diego and honestly it shouldn't be this difficult. This neighborhood restaurant is truly a hidden gem among the other "fancy" restaurants in Old Town. The staff is warm and friendly and I have never thought their service lacking. If you love good Mexican food and drinks, Dos Amigos will not disappoint. I might move back to Alexandria solely because of this place. Just kidding, but am I? read more

I've always noticed the patio is packed so when my family (plus my aunt and mom) were looking for somewhere not far to eat on a Monday night, I suggested Dos Amigos. Even on Monday, street parking could not be found but in the side lot and garage there are spaces marked for restaurant and retail customers. It was rainy so no one was on the patio but the small bar area was packed. Inside was pretty busy too. It is a small space so I imagine weekends can be rough getting in. We were seated quickly and had prompt service that was welcoming and friendly throughout. They do have high chairs and cups with lids. My son carried that lid the rest of the night with him but I digress. The menu is really diverse and reasonably priced. Four adults ate for about $65. Portions are pretty large too considering nearly everything cones with rice and beans (either refried or black). My aunt got roasted pork tacos, husband huevos rancheros, and my mom and I both got combos. I got a mahi mahi taco and Chiles relenos and she the same taco and chicken enchilada. She wanted me to make sure I wrote how tender the chicken was in her enchilada. She said it was flavorful and delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The mahi mahi taco came either crispy or soft (I chose soft) and had the accoutrements on the side. It was a nice sized portion and flavorful. I appreciated the inclusion of guacamole for no charge. The Chile releno was tasty. The ground beef was seasoned well and it was very cheesy. It was my bad I didn't know the poblano pepper was Fried so I removed most of the outer coating. Otherwise it was delicious! The margaritas looked yummy (next time...)and the complimentary chips and salsa were a great way to start. My mom wanted me to make more of how light and crisp the chips were (true) but salsa was watery. I used chola to spice it up. I've gotten take out from here a few times, so I can't speak to the restaurant experience at all. First time I tried the mahi mahi tacos, second time I went for two crispy fish tacos. Both times we also got chips and salsa. The salsa was amazing and tasted very fresh, not preserved or artificial like at some restaurants. The mahi mahi tacos were very generously sized and had large chunks of grilled fish inside. The crispy fish tacos featured smaller pieces of fish that were also grilled, though I'm not completely sure what type of fish it was. The taco shells were a little gummy, but I'm attributing that to the fact that it was a take out order and we didn't eat the food as soon as it was prepared. Both meals came with black beans and spanish rice on the side--a generous portion. Overall, this is a solid tex-mex place, but doesn't have anything that helps it stand out from other similar restaurants. When I'm in the area and craving tacos, it will be on my short list, but I don't think it's worth the drive alone. read more

Got off of the Blue line at Braddock Rd and decided to try Dos Amigos. Got a table outside to people watch and play that's my car. The food was very good especially the guacamole. The margaritas are well made and you know the tequila is in there. The black beans are fresh and not from a can, and you will get an ample portion of meat with your tacos. The only drawback is the onions were over powering in the salsa, which happened at another place I went to. I'm beginning to wonder if this is a canned product sold locally and not freshly made.
